UCL: Atletico stun Barcelona as PSG defeat Liverpool

0

Atletico Madrid stunned FC Barcelona 2-0 in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final clash.

Diego Simeone’s side arrived at the Camp Nou seeking revenge for their recent league defeat to the Catalan giants and delivered a disciplined performance to secure a crucial away win.

Barcelona started brightly and looked the more threatening side early on, but the game took a dramatic turn when Pau Cubarsí was shown a straight red card for a last-man challenge.

From the resulting free-kick, Julián Álvarez broke the deadlock to put Atletico ahead. The visitors capitalized on their numerical advantage in the second half, with Alexander Sørloth doubling their lead to hand Atletico a commanding edge heading into the return leg.

In the other quarter-final fixture, Paris Saint-Germain secured a 2-0 victory over Liverpool F.C. at the Parc des Princes.

Goals from Désiré Doué and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia in either half ensured PSG took a solid advantage into the second leg.

‘Diddy’s babe’—Wizkid throws jabs at Burna Boy over clash with DJ Tunez

0

Afrobeats star Wizkid has reacted publicly to the recent altercation involving fellow artiste Burna Boy and his associate, DJ Tunez.

Burna Boy and members of his team were reportedly involved in an incident with DJ Tunez at Obi’s House in Lagos on Monday night, with claims that the DJ was assaulted during the clash.

Taking to his X account on Wednesday, Wizkid criticized Burna Boy, accusing him of relying on his entourage during the confrontation rather than handling the situation alone. He described the act as cowardly and used harsh words to ridicule his colleague.

In a controversial remark, Wizkid also revived allegations linking Burna Boy to embattled American music executive Sean “Diddy” Combs, mockingly referring to him as “Diddy’s babe.”

The comments have further fueled tension within the music industry, as reactions continue to trail the incident.

Meanwhile, Burna Boy has faced growing criticism over the alleged assault. The Nigerian DJ Association has reportedly imposed a temporary ban on his music pending the outcome of an investigation.

Several industry figures, including media personality Shopsydoo, have condemned the incident, stressing that violence has no place in the entertainment sector.

2027: Tinubu will relocate Nigeria’s capital from Abuja if re-elected—Amaechi

0

A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Rotimi Amaechi, has cautioned that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu could undermine Abuja and potentially relocate Nigeria’s capital back to Lagos if re-elected in 2027.

Amaechi made the remarks on Wednesday during a protest in Abuja, stressing that the ADC is determined to unseat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), just as the party removed the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from power in 2015.

“The APC forced PDP out of office, and now it is our turn to do the same to them. If they remain in power, they may destroy this capital or relocate it to Lagos. Nigerians must vote them out,” he said.

The protest, tagged #OccupyINEC, was organized by the ADC following the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) withdrawal of recognition from some of the party’s leaders amid an internal crisis.

Prominent figures at the demonstration included Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, David Mark, and Rauf Aregbesola, all of whom maintained that Tinubu should not continue in office.

Amaechi further accused the president of weakening Nigeria’s democracy and suggested that the APC is apprehensive about future elections.

“They claim to be popular, so why are they afraid of elections? Tinubu says he was part of NADECO. Yet democracy is being weakened under him. In 2015, the APC benefited from Jega, who remains one of the finest INEC chairmen,” he stated.

He also criticized the reported appointment of Joash Amupitan as INEC chairman, alleging that it was intended to weaken opposition parties ahead of upcoming polls.

“Appointing someone primarily concerned with protecting personal interests has no place in INEC. It is disappointing. The process has already been manipulated by restricting party registrations out of fear of defeat. Regardless, they will lose the election,” Amaechi added.

The former minister also blamed the current administration for rising unemployment and urged Nigerians to vote against the APC in the next general elections.

“Unemployment is increasing under Tinubu’s leadership. If Nigerians do not act, the situation will worsen. I have played my part; the rest is up to the people,” he said.

2027: ADC, PDP in closed-door meeting

0

Leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by Professor Jerry Gana are currently holding a crucial stakeholders’ meeting.

Prominent figures at the gathering include ADC National Chairman, Senator David Mark; former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar; former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso; and Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the last election, Peter Obi.

Other notable attendees are former Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami; former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal; former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi; and Senator Aminu Tambuwal, among others.

Representing the PDP faction are Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde; factional National Chairman Professor Jerry Gana; former Senate President Adolphus Wabara; and former Niger State Governor Babangida Aliyu, alongside members of the party’s National Working Committee.

However, Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, who was expected to represent the PDP, was notably absent from the meeting.

The development comes shortly after a protest held earlier in Abuja, which began at Maitama Roundabout and proceeded to the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Dangote Refinery reduces petrol price less than 24 hours after hike

0

The Dangote Refinery has reduced the ex-gantry price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) by N75, bringing the cost down to N1,200 per liter.

Industry sources confirmed the adjustment on Wednesday, noting that it follows a recent increase that pushed petrol prices to about N1,275 per liter. The earlier hike was attributed to volatility in the global oil market, which raised production and supply costs.

The latest price cut is linked to a notable decline in international crude oil prices. Brent crude futures dropped to $95.05 per barrel, marking a 13 per cent decrease, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude settled at $97.18, down by nearly 14 per cent.

Analysts attribute the fall in oil prices to shifting geopolitical dynamics in the Middle East, particularly a temporary ceasefire understanding between the United States and Iran, which has eased concerns over potential supply disruptions.

Fuel marketers and commuters across major cities have welcomed the development, expressing optimism that the reduction will help cushion the impact of rising living costs amid persistent inflation.

Energy experts say the refinery’s move could influence pump prices nationwide, especially if the downward trend in global crude oil prices is sustained.

They also note that the development underscores Nigeria’s growing exposure to international oil price fluctuations, despite gains in local refining capacity.

The Dangote Refinery, which began operations in 2023, was expected to significantly reduce the country’s reliance on imported fuel. However, its pricing continues to reflect global oil benchmarks such as Brent and WTI crude.

NYSC announces timetable for 2026 Batch ‘A’ Stream II Orientation Exercise

0

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has unveiled the schedule of activities for the 2026 Batch ‘A’ Stream II Orientation Course.

According to a statement issued by the scheme’s director of information and public relations, Caroline Embu, the 21-day orientation program will be conducted simultaneously across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

The exercise will begin with the reception and registration of prospective corps members on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, and conclude at midnight on Friday, April 24, 2026.

The swearing-in ceremony for the mobilized corps members is scheduled to take place on Friday, April 24, 2026, while the orientation course will officially end on Tuesday, May 12, 2026.

NYSC management wished all prospective corps members safe journeys to their respective orientation camps nationwide. It also reiterated its warning against night travel, advising corps members to halt their journeys by 6:00 p.m.

The scheme urged them to spend the night at designated safe locations such as corps members’ lodges, military formations, police stations, or traditional rulers’ palaces before continuing their trips the following morning.

UniJos: ASUU begins indefinite strike

0

The University of Jos chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has declared an indefinite strike following the non-payment of March 2026 salaries and the omission of the Earned Academic Allowance (EAA) from staff remuneration.

The branch chairperson, Jurbe Molwus, announced the decision in a statement released on Wednesday, directing members to immediately withdraw their services.

He said the directive requires lecturers to stay away from lectures, examinations, and all statutory meetings, in line with resolutions reached by the union’s National Executive Council (NEC) and the local congress.

According to Molwus, the industrial action, which took effect on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, became necessary after months of patience by members despite persistent delays in salary payments.

“After following due process, we hereby request all members to abstain from lectures, the conduct of exams, and statutory meetings, as our salary for March 2026 remains unpaid despite our patience,” he said.

The union blamed the delay on the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation, noting that the university’s bursary department had already completed its obligations in the payment process.

“From our consultation, the delay is occasioned by the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation, as the bursary of the university has done its part,” the statement added.

2027: Your second term shaking, you’re surrounded by liars—Primate Ayodele warns Tinubu

0

Primate Elijah Ayodele, leader of the INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, has cautioned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu against assuming that his bid for a second term is guaranteed.

In a statement issued by his media aide, Osho Oluwatosin, the cleric warned that Tinubu’s re-election is “still shaking” and claimed that those around him have spiritually blinded him, preventing him from seeing looming challenges.

“Tinubu’s second term is uncertain. The security situation requires divine intervention, the economy is weak, and he is surrounded by liars,” Primate Ayodele said. “Those praising him may actually be his enemies. If he continues to listen to them, he may only realize the truth after the election, which could be too late.”

He further noted that while Tinubu has the potential to secure a second term without obstacles, deceptive advisers could create complications: “Most of the people coming to your party have come to mock and lie to you. Psychopaths and deceivers are close to you, and they will mislead you.”

The cleric singled out the southeast and northern regions as potential areas of difficulty for the president, warning that solutions may not yet be in sight.

Primate Ayodele also urged Nigerians to seek divine guidance for a successful 2027 election: “Nigeria needs divine intervention to have a successful election. Tinubu means well for the country, but the negative elements around him have clouded his vision.”

Ejimakor explains next steps in Nnamdi Kanu’s appeal court case

0

Counsel to the convicted leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, Aloy Ejimakor, has provided fresh details on the status and next procedural steps in his client’s appeal before the Court of Appeal of Nigeria.

In a statement shared on Wednesday, Ejimakor disclosed that Kanu’s Notice and Grounds of Appeal were filed in February 2026, formally initiating the appellate process.

“The Notice and Grounds of Appeal were duly filed in February 2026, thereby setting the appeal process in motion,” he said.

He revealed that the record of appeal—including the charge sheet, proceedings, exhibits, rulings, judgment, and sentence—has already been compiled by the registrar of the Federal High Court of Nigeria, Abuja, and transmitted to the appellate court.

“The complete record of appeal has been compiled and transmitted to the Court of Appeal, which now paves the way for the next stage,” Ejimakor added.

According to him, the next phase involves the filing of briefs of argument. He explained that the defense team is expected to submit its appellant’s brief within 45 days of receiving the record, outlining arguments across 22 grounds of appeal and seeking to overturn the conviction.

“Our legal team has 45 days to file the appellant’s brief, which will address 22 grounds of appeal challenging the conviction,” he stated.

He added that the federal government, as respondent, will file its brief within 30 days of being served, after which the defense may submit a reply within 14 days if necessary.

“The respondent will then file its brief within 30 days, and we may respond with a reply brief within 14 days where necessary,” he said.

Ejimakor noted that the written briefs will form the core of the appeal, with oral submissions during the hearing limited to clarifications, stressing that no new evidence or witness testimony would be admitted at this stage.

“The appeal will be determined largely on the briefs, while oral arguments will only serve to clarify key issues. No fresh evidence will be entertained,” he explained.

He further stated that once all briefs are filed, the Court of Appeal of Nigeria will fix a hearing date before a three-member panel of justices.

“Upon completion of filings, the court will fix a hearing date, and a panel of three justices will hear arguments from both sides,” he said.

Following the hearing, the court is expected to reserve judgment, which may be delivered within weeks or a few months but not exceeding 90 days.

Ejimakor outlined possible outcomes of the appeal, including the court allowing the appeal and quashing the conviction, dismissing it and affirming the judgment, or ordering a retrial.

He urged the public to avoid speculation and focus on the established legal process.

“People should therefore focus on these clear, sequential stages rather than daily rumors or believing that the appeal process will follow the same pattern seen at the High Court,” he said.

“This is the standard, transparent roadmap laid down by Nigerian law, and MNK’s appeal cannot be any different. The appeal is progressing exactly as the rules require—one procedural step at a time.”

2027: ADC crisis: Peter Obi, Kwankwaso lead as supporters storm Abuja streets in protest against INEC

0

Chieftains of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Mr. Peter Obi and Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, were present in Abuja on Wednesday as they joined supporters at the “Save Democracy Protest” held at the Maitama Roundabout in the Federal Capital Territory ahead of 2027 general elections.

The demonstration drew members of the ADC and other concerned Nigerians who gathered to voice opposition to what organisers described as growing threats to the country’s democratic system.

Earlier, Obi had announced the protest via his X handle, urging citizens to rise in defence of democracy. He noted that the rally was organised by ADC leaders, members, and other pro-democracy advocates committed to safeguarding Nigeria’s political future.

According to him, the protest is aimed at resisting any move towards a one-party system and preserving democratic values.

“We, members and leaders of the ADC and other well-meaning Nigerians, lovers of democracy, are saying that our democracy must not be killed.

“We say no to a one-party system, and for that reason today we are calling on Nigerians who believe in unity, peace and the security of our country to join us as we defend democracy in our land,” Obi stated.

Ahead of the protest, a flyer circulating online invited Nigerians to participate, urging them to “defend our freedom, protect our vote” and emphasising that every vote counts.

The protest, which commenced at 8:00 a.m., took place at the Maitama Roundabout in Abuja and attracted a sizeable turnout of supporters.

A video from the scene has also surfaced online, capturing moments from the demonstration.
