2027: Nigerians react to possible Obi–Kwankwaso ticket in ADC as Atiku fades

0

Speculation over a possible joint presidential ticket between Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso ahead of the 2027 elections is generating widespread reactions across Nigeria.

Obi, who contested the 2023 presidential election under the Labour Party, and Kwankwaso, the candidate of the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) in the same race, are now both linked to the African Democratic Congress (ADC)-led opposition coalition.

The conversation gained momentum after Kwankwaso recently met with ADC leaders and subsequently aligned with the coalition. Days later, Obi—former governor of Anambra State and a key figure within the ADC—paid a Sallah visit to Kwankwaso in Kano on March 22, 2026. The visit drew large crowds and further fueled talks of a possible political partnership.

Meanwhile, Nigerian Newssphere reports the chances of Atiku Abubakar emerging as sole ADC remain active but are gradually fading.

Earlier, Atiku said he is ready to support whoever emerges as the ADC presidential candidate.

Since then, discussions have intensified over whether the ADC may be considering an Obi-Kwankwaso ticket for the 2027 general election.

Nigerians react

Nigerians have continued to share mixed reactions on the development.

Lilian Ijeoma, a civil servant in Abuja, described the potential alliance as a “game-changer,” stressing the need for leaders with proven track records.

Similarly, Emeka Nwafor, a political science student at the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), said the combination could form a strong political force.

A broadcaster, Owigo Okolo, also expressed confidence in the duo’s chances, noting that both politicians command significant grassroots support and could perform well electorally if they join forces.

On social media, opinions remain divided. While some users believe Obi’s reputation for integrity combined with Kwankwaso’s political structure—especially in northern Nigeria—could pose a serious challenge to the ruling party, others warn that internal disagreements within any coalition could undermine such an alliance.

Some commentators also stressed the need for clear policy direction, particularly on the economy, rather than symbolic political gestures.

Despite the excitement among supporters, skeptics point to Nigeria’s history of fragile political alliances, cautioning that such partnerships often struggle to hold before elections.

As political realignments continue ahead of 2027, the possibility of an Obi-Kwankwaso ticket remains speculative, but it has already become a major talking point in the country’s evolving opposition landscape.

Meanwhile, the crisis the recent leadership crisis in ADC after the Independent National Electoral Commission delisted David Mark-led leadership is a major snag.

Nigerian Newssphere reports that ADC now have three leaders, Dumebi Kachikwu, David Mark and Nafiu Bala Gombe, leading factions all laying claim to owning the opposition party.

UCL: They were superb—Piers Morgan praises two Arsenal players after 1-0 win against Sporting CP

0

British broadcaster Piers Morgan has lauded Kai Havertz and Gabriel Martinelli following Arsenal FC’s 1-0 victory over Sporting CP in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday.

The Gunners secured the win at Estádio José Alvalade in Lisbon, thanks to a stoppage-time strike from Havertz that handed the Premier League leaders a crucial first-leg advantage ahead of next week’s return fixture.

Reacting on his X account after the match, Morgan, a passionate Arsenal supporter, praised both players for their decisive contribution, highlighting Martinelli’s assist and Havertz’s finish.

“Brilliant goal by Arsenal, right at the death… superb assist by Martinelli, superb finish by Havertz,” he wrote.

Arsenal will now shift focus to domestic action, where they face AFC Bournemouth in their next Premier League outing.

‘Liar, you’re an APC mole’-Nafiu Gombe replies Kwankwaso as ADC crisis deepens

0

Nafiu Bala Gombe, a factional leader of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has responded strongly to criticism from former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso over the party’s ongoing leadership crisis.

The ADC, which has recently become a platform for opposition figures strategizing ahead of the 2027 general elections, has been embroiled in a deepening internal dispute. The crisis has seen rival factions, including one aligned with former Senate President David Mark, laying claim to the party’s leadership.

Kwankwaso, who recently joined the party, had expressed frustration after Bala allegedly failed to attend a scheduled meeting aimed at resolving the dispute. Speaking in an interview with DCL Hausa, the former governor criticized Bala’s absence and described him as a 35-year-old who missed an opportunity for “fatherly advice.”

In a swift reaction, Bala dismissed the age claim as inaccurate, insisting he is 46 years old. He also accused Kwankwaso of behaving like a mole for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and warned him against interfering in the ADC’s internal affairs.

Bala argued that older politicians should step back and allow younger leaders to take charge of party leadership and national politics while serving in advisory roles.

“Even if I were young, Kwankwaso has no right to look down on me,” Bala said, noting that many of today’s political leaders assumed major responsibilities at a young age.

He further urged senior political figures to create space for the next generation, stressing that youths should be given the opportunity to steer the affairs of both political parties and the country.

Bala also recalled events from the 2023 elections, stating that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and other northern leaders had once urged Kwankwaso to step down in the interest of regional unity, but he declined.

“Having refused to step down then, he has no moral justification to bully or advise me on the injustice being done to me by impostors in the ADC. Nobody can bully me,” Bala declared.

UCL: Arteta explains why Arsenal beat Sporting 1-0

0

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has admitted he feared his side might fail to score during their hard-fought 1-0 victory over Sporting CP on Tuesday night.

Kai Havertz struck deep into stoppage time to hand the Gunners a crucial away win in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final clash.

Arsenal had to rely on David Raya, who produced a series of impressive saves to keep the hosts at bay, while a goal from Martin Zubimendi was ruled out for offside.

Reflecting on the performance, Arteta admitted his team struggled with sharpness in the attacking third and lacked the final pass needed to break down Sporting’s defensive setup.

“Yes, because when we got into the final third, we missed the final bit,” Arteta said.

“We needed to be sharper, quicker, and more efficient to break them down when they sat deep.

“We had a goal disallowed and a few moments where we came close, but we lacked that decisive pass.

“In the end, a moment of brilliance from our finishers won us the game.”

Oil prices drop significantly below $100 after Trump declares ceasefire with Iran

0

Global crude oil prices tumbled sharply below the $100 per barrel mark during early Asian trading on Wednesday, following a ceasefire announcement by Donald Trump regarding the ongoing tensions with Iran.

As of Wednesday morning, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) fell by 14.44 percent to $96.64 per barrel, while Brent Crude dropped by 12.97 percent to $95.

The steep decline came after Trump revealed a conditional two-week ceasefire, pledging to halt U.S. military operations if Iran immediately restores unrestricted access to the Strait of Hormuz.

Announcing the move on social media, Trump described the development as a “double-sided ceasefire,” a notable shift from his earlier warning of severe consequences should Iran fail to meet U.S. demands.

Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araqchi, also signaled readiness to de-escalate, stating that Tehran would suspend attacks once strikes against Iran cease and maritime movement through the Strait is managed in coordination with Iranian authorities.

The latest downturn in oil prices follows a recent surge above $105 per barrel, triggered by escalating geopolitical tensions and Trump’s earlier ultimatum on the reopening of the vital shipping route.

The previous spike had prompted the Dangote Refinery to raise its petrol gantry price to N1,275 per liter on Tuesday.

With crude prices now falling, the 650,000-barrel-per-day facility is expected to review its pricing downward, offering potential relief to Nigerians currently purchasing petrol between N1,290 and N1,350 per liter in Abuja.

Trump declares immediate ceasefire with Iran over Strait of Hormuz access

0

United States President Donald Trump has announced a conditional two-week ceasefire with Iran, linking the pause in hostilities to the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz for global shipping.

In a statement posted on his Truth Social platform late Tuesday, Trump said the decision followed appeals from Pakistan’s leadership, who requested additional time to pursue diplomatic efforts.

According to him, the temporary suspension of U.S. military operations will only take effect if Iran guarantees the “complete, immediate, and safe” reopening of the vital maritime route. He described the arrangement as a “two-sided ceasefire,” indicating that both sides are expected to comply.

The announcement marks a shift after several days of heightened tensions. Iran had earlier restricted access to the Strait of Hormuz—one of the world’s most important shipping lanes, responsible for about 20 percent of global oil and liquefied natural gas transport—amid ongoing conflict involving U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iranian targets.

Just hours before declaring the ceasefire, Trump had issued a strong warning, saying severe consequences could follow if Iran failed to reopen the waterway within a set deadline. He also threatened broader attacks on critical infrastructure, including power systems and bridges, describing such measures as necessary in response to what he called longstanding hostile actions by Tehran.

The sudden move toward de-escalation is widely attributed to last-minute diplomatic intervention by Pakistan. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and military chief Asim Munir reportedly held urgent discussions with Washington, urging restraint and pushing for dialogue.

Pakistan’s involvement underscores its strategic ties with both the United States and Iran, positioning it as a key intermediary at a critical stage in the crisis.

Dollar to Naira exchange rate Today, April 7, 2026: Naira slides after Easter break

0

The Naira weakened against the US dollar at the official foreign exchange market on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, following the Easter holidays.

Data released by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) showed the local currency depreciated to N1,386.68 per dollar, down from N1,380.79 recorded last Thursday before the break. This reflects a decline of N5.89 upon the resumption of trading.

In contrast, the naira showed marginal strength at the parallel market. It appreciated to N1,404 per dollar on Tuesday, compared to rates ranging between N1,410 and N1,415 before the Easter holidays, according to a Bureau de Change operator in Wuse Zone 4, Abuja, Abubakar Hassan.

The mixed performance comes amid a decline in Nigeria’s external reserves, which dropped to $49.13 billion as of April 2, 2026, from about $50 billion recorded in March, based on data from the apex bank.

The latest movements highlight ongoing volatility in the foreign exchange market, as the naira continues to face pressure at the official window despite intermittent gains in the parallel market.

BREAKING: Dangote Refinery raises Petrol price

0

Dangote Refinery has increased its gantry price for Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) to N1,275 per liter, citing rising global crude oil prices and escalating geopolitical tensions.

Findings by DAILY POST on Tuesday revealed that the 650,000 barrels-per-day facility raised its petrol price from N1,200 per liter, representing an increase of N75 or about five percent.

The adjustment comes after nearly a week of relative stability in domestic fuel prices, despite persistent fluctuations in the international oil market.

The refinery’s president, Aliko Dangote, had earlier reassured Nigerians and other African markets of uninterrupted fuel supply, even as tensions persist in the ongoing Iran–United States–Israel conflict.

Speaking during a recent tour of the refinery, Dangote said, “What I can do is assure Nigerians and most of West Africa, Central Africa, and East Africa that we have the capacity to supply them.”

The latest price hike follows a previous reduction in gantry prices on March 27, 2026, when global crude oil prices declined.

As of the time of filing this report, Brent crude and West Texas Intermediate were trading at $105 and $110 per barrel, respectively.

Meanwhile, former United States President Donald Trump on Tuesday issued a fresh warning over the Iran crisis, stating that “a whole civilization will die tonight,” further heightening global concerns over oil supply disruptions.

Wike: Gridlock as heavy rainfall destroys multi-billion naira Kugbo Bus Terminal in Abuja

0

A heavy downpour on Tuesday caused major disruption along the Nyanya–Keffi Expressway in Abuja after parts of the multi-billion naira Kugbo Bus Terminal recently built by Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike were damaged by the storm.

The rainfall tore through sections of the terminal’s roofing, scattering debris onto the highway and obstructing vehicular movement.

The incident led to severe gridlock on the busy corridor linking the Federal Capital Territory to neighboring Nasarawa State, leaving commuters stranded for hours.

Eyewitnesses said several vehicles were struck by falling debris, while residents and passersby rallied to clear the obstruction in a bid to ease the congestion.

The stretch near the Abuja Computerized Vehicle Inspection Center, operated by the Directorate of Road Traffic Services, was reportedly the hardest hit.

As of Tuesday evening, traffic remained slow-moving, with motorists advised to exercise caution when approaching the affected area.

‘Whole Iran’s civilization will be wiped out tonight’—Trump issues final warning

0

United States President Donald Trump has again called on Iran to reach an agreement ahead of his Tuesday deadline, warning of devastating consequences if a deal is not secured to halt the ongoing conflict.

In a post shared on his Truth Social platform on Tuesday, Trump cautioned that an entire civilization could be wiped out if tensions escalate further.

“A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again. I don’t want that to happen, but it probably will,” he wrote.

He added, “However, now that we have complete and total regime change, where different, smarter, and less radicalized minds prevail, maybe something revolutionarily wonderful can happen. Who knows?

“We will find out tonight, one of the most important moments in the long and complex history of the world. Forty-seven years of extortion, corruption, and death will finally end. God bless the great people of Iran!”

Trump had earlier threatened to target civilian infrastructure in Iran if authorities fail to guarantee free passage through the Strait of Hormuz by 20:00 EDT on Tuesday (01:00 BST Wednesday).
