0

The Nigerian Naira continued its upward trend against the United States dollar at the official foreign exchange market on Tuesday, maintaining a modest appreciation.

Data released by the Central Bank of Nigeria showed the Naira strengthened to N1,356.16 per dollar, compared to N1,356.89 recorded on Monday. This reflects a slight day-on-day gain of N0.73 for the local currency.

However, activity at the parallel market showed no movement, with the Naira holding steady at N1,410 per dollar, unchanged from the previous day’s rate.

Reports indicate that over the past two days, the Naira has posted marginal gains against the dollar, signaling a gradual recovery in the official market.

The appreciation comes amid a decline in Nigeria’s external reserves, which fell to $48.72 billion as of April 13, 2026, down from $48.81 billion recorded over the weekend.

A member of the terrorist group Boko Haram has reportedly claimed that the group’s actions are rooted in their interpretation of religious teachings, according to a video circulating online.

The footage, which was first shared by former Nigerian special forces member Daniel Somtochukwu, shows armed individuals dressed in camouflage issuing warnings of further attacks. In the video, the speaker threatens continued violence and suggests an expansion of their activities.

Sources indicate that the video was recorded on April 6, 2026, but only began gaining widespread attention on April 14.

The group also reportedly mentioned plans to intensify attacks, particularly in areas such as Borno State, which has long been affected by insurgency.

The development follows the recent release of multiple videos by the group showing kidnapped victims, including men, women, and children, raising renewed concerns over security in the region.

Authorities have yet to officially respond to the latest video, but security analysts say such messages are often intended to spread fear and demonstrate the group’s continued presence.

I pray Nigeria does well to avoid migration into Ghana- Mahama

0

Ghanaian President John Mahama has emphasized the critical role of Nigeria’s stability in safeguarding Ghana’s security and economic wellbeing, warning that crises in the region’s largest country could trigger migration pressures across West Africa.

Mahama made the remarks at the African Heritage Awards 2026, where he highlighted the enduring historical, cultural, and economic ties between Nigeria and Ghana.

According to him, the fortunes of both nations are closely linked, stressing that instability in Nigeria could have ripple effects on neighboring countries.

“Nigeria is of keen security interest to us. If Nigeria does well, Ghana does well,” Mahama said.

He warned that Nigeria’s large population makes its stability a regional concern, noting that any major disruption could lead to significant migration into Ghana.

“When you have cousins, 250 million of them, you want them to do well so that one million of them don’t come drifting towards a small country like Ghana,” he added.

Mahama also expressed personal concern over Nigeria’s situation, stating that he often reflects on the country’s challenges and remains hopeful for improvement.

“I think about Nigeria a lot and hope things get better,” he said.

He further pointed to long-standing ancestral and migration links between the two countries, especially connections between Ghanaian communities and the Yoruba people in southwestern Nigeria.

“These shared roots remind us how closely connected we are and why stability in Nigeria matters to all of us,” Mahama noted.

His comments come amid growing concerns across West Africa over insecurity, economic pressures, and migration trends, with regional leaders continuing to stress Nigeria’s strategic importance to regional stability and prosperity.

UCL: UEFA announces decision on Barcelona protest over refereeing in Atletico defeat

0

The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has ruled that FC Barcelona’s complaint over officiating in their Champions League clash with Atletico Madrid is inadmissible.

The decision was delivered on Tuesday by UEFA’s Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body following a formal protest lodged by the Catalan club.

Barcelona had raised concerns over the performance of referee István Kovács during the first leg of their quarter-final encounter at the Spotify Camp Nou.

The controversy centred on an incident involving Atletico defender Marc Pubill, who appeared to handle the ball inside the penalty area after receiving a pass from goalkeeper Juan Musso.

Barcelona argued that the action warranted a penalty as well as a second yellow card for Pubill. However, both the referee and Atletico Madrid maintained that the ball was not yet in play at the time of the incident.

Following the match, Barcelona submitted a formal complaint, requesting clarification on the decision and access to audio recordings between the match officials and the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).

In a statement, UEFA confirmed the ruling: “Following the first leg of the UEFA Champions League quarter-final played on April 8, 2026, between FC Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, FC Barcelona lodged a protest concerning a refereeing decision.

“On April 13, 2026, the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body declared the protest inadmissible.”

Olubadan, wife of Ajimobi, offered me a bribe to impeach Makinde-Oyekola

0

The Chief Whip of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Hon. Gbenga Oyekola, has alleged attempts by the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, and former First Lady of the state, Mrs. Florence Ajimobi, to influence the Speaker, Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, in connection with a purported plan to impeach Governor Seyi Makinde.

Oyekola made the allegations in a statement issued on Tuesday, where he clarified his position and distanced himself from the reported impeachment plot.

According to the lawmaker, the alleged scheme came to light after a key meeting revealed that certain individuals were working to create a rift between the House of Assembly and the governor.

He claimed that the Speaker had earlier sought the support of the Olubadan for his 2027 governorship ambition and was subsequently invited for a meeting. During the engagement, Oyekola alleged that the monarch advised the Speaker and offered to facilitate a House of Representatives ticket for him under the All Progressives Congress (APC), alongside financial support. He, however, stated that the Speaker declined the offer.

Oyekola further alleged that Mrs. Ajimobi also approached the Speaker on a similar matter, offering him money, which he reportedly rejected.

The Chief Whip maintained that the Speaker did not accept any form of inducement and reaffirmed his own opposition to any move aimed at destabilizing the state government.

‘No battalion, person can stop ADC convention’—Dino Melaye

0

A member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) convention planning committee, Dino Melaye, has declared that no force can stop the party from holding its scheduled convention, stressing that organizers have a valid contract and have fully paid for the venue.

Reports had indicated that the convention slated for Tuesday was under threat, with claims that the party was being denied access to the facility.

Speaking on the Morning Show on Arise Television, Melaye disclosed that there were attempts to frustrate the event, including moves to shut the venue’s gates and eject organizers from the premises.

He said the planning committee resisted the pressure, insisting that they had a duly executed agreement with the venue owners and had met all financial obligations.

According to him, the party remains resolute in proceeding with the convention as planned, noting that all necessary documentation, including payment receipts and signed contracts, is in place.

Melaye also reaffirmed the ADC’s determination to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), expressing confidence in the party’s growing strength and readiness to emerge as a formidable political force.

“Nobody will stop us. After a contract, a proper contract, with the owners of this place, and after payment and receipt issued, no battalion would have moved us away from here today. So convention is going to hold. The exercise will hold. “ADC is entrenched, and we are kicking out APC,” he said.

Coup plot: Nigerian govt set to arraign Sylva’s brother, Anagha, others

President Tinbu

The Federal Government is set to arraign Paganengigha Anagha, younger brother of former Minister of Petroleum Resources Timipre Sylva, today at the Federal High Court in Abuja over an alleged coup plot.

Anagha will be docked alongside three others—Sylva’s driver, Musa Mohammed; a plainclothes police officer, Ayuba Reuben; and an escort driver, Friday Lusa Paul—before the court.

Although details of the charges have not been officially disclosed, sources in the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation confirmed that the arraignment is scheduled to take place on April 14 at Court 12 of the Federal High Court.

The case is linked to allegations that emerged in 2025 accusing Sylva, a former governor of Bayelsa State, of involvement in a failed plot to overthrow the administration of Bola Tinubu.

Sylva, who is reportedly in the United Kingdom, was alleged to have financed the plot, with claims that funds ranging from ₦785 million to ₦46 billion were traced to accounts linked to him. Authorities have not publicly confirmed these figures.

The allegations intensified in October 2025 when operatives, including personnel from the Defense Intelligence Agency, reportedly raided properties linked to Sylva in Abuja and Bayelsa State, leading to the arrest of Anagha and others.

The alleged coup plot was also said to be connected to the detention of about 16 military officers accused of holding clandestine meetings aimed at overthrowing the civilian government.

In response, Sylva’s media aide, Julius Bokoru, dismissed the allegations, describing them as politically motivated and intended to damage his principal’s reputation ahead of the 2027 general elections. He maintained that Sylva is a committed democrat and a supporter of President Tinubu.

Bokoru also stated that Sylva was abroad receiving medical treatment at the time of the incidents.

Separately, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission had declared Sylva wanted in November 2025 in connection with a $14.8 million fraud investigation.
