2027: Atiku finally speaks on when he will stop contesting presidential elections

0

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has declared that the 2027 general election will mark his last attempt to become Nigeria’s president.

Atiku made the announcement on Wednesday during an interview on Arise TV.

The former vice-president, who has made multiple bids for the presidency over the years, reaffirmed his determination to contest once more despite previous unsuccessful attempts.

“This will be my last shot. The stakes are higher, because I believe that would be my last chance, ‘he said.

He was the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 general elections.

Nigerian govt re-arraigns Malami, son

0

The Federal Government on Wednesday re-arraigned the former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, alongside his son, Abdulaziz Abubakar Malami, on an amended five-count charge bordering on alleged terrorism and unlawful possession of firearms.

The new charge was read before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik of the Federal High Court, Abuja, replacing an earlier charge filed against the defendants.

At the resumed proceedings, prosecution counsel, Mr. Akinlolu Kehinde, SAN, informed the court that an amended charge had been filed and served on the defendants, seeking to substitute the earlier one.

Defense counsel, Mr. Shuaibu Arua, SAN, confirmed receipt of the new charge and told the court that the defendants had no objection to its adoption.

Following the absence of opposition, Justice Abdulmalik struck out the previous charge and directed that the amended counts be read. Both defendants pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Their counsel subsequently urged the court to allow them to continue on the bail earlier granted, a request the prosecution did not oppose. The court granted the application.

The court had, on February 27, admitted the defendants to bail in the sum of N200 million each, with two sureties in like sum.

Justice Abdulmalik adjourned the matter until May 26 for the prosecution to open its case by calling witnesses and tendering exhibits.

The charges stem from allegations that the defendants, in December 2025 at the Geeze Phase II Area of the Birnin Kebbi Local Government Area in Kebbi State, unlawfully possessed a firearm and ammunition without a license and allegedly engaged in acts preparatory to terrorism.

The offenses are said to contravene provisions of the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022, as well as the Firearms Act.

All Igbo IPOB members—Ejimakor faults terrorists sponsor label

0

Legal counsel to Nnamdi Kanu, Aloy Ejimakor, has criticized the Nigerian government’s designation of the Indigenous People of Biafra as a terrorist sponsor, describing the move as flawed and unjustifiable.

Ejimakor made his position known in a statement shared on his X account on Wednesday, following the recent release of a government list naming 48 individuals and groups allegedly financing terrorism.

The list was published amid growing security concerns across Nigeria, where attacks by armed groups have continued to claim the lives of security personnel and civilians.

Reacting, Ejimakor argued that the classification of IPOB as a terrorist sponsor fails to reflect the group’s broader ethnic identity. According to him, every native of the former Eastern Nigeria, commonly referred to as Biafra or Ndịgbo, is inherently linked to IPOB by heritage.

“This truth is self-evident: every native of former Eastern Nigeria/Biafra (or Ndịgbo) is ethnically a bona fide member of the Indigenous People of Biafra,” he stated.

He further contended that designating IPOB as a terrorist sponsor is comparable to labeling other regional socio-cultural identities as terrorist organizations, insisting that such a characterization is a misnomer that cannot be sustained.

Ejimakor drew parallels with groups representing other parts of the country, noting that tagging IPOB in such a manner would be akin to branding Arewa or Oduduwa entities as terrorist sponsors.

His comments come amid ongoing legal and political debates over the status and activities of IPOB in Nigeria.

Akpabio reveals real reason behind US embassy shutdown in Nigeria

0

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has dismissed concerns linking the reported drawdown of personnel at the United States Embassy in Nigeria to Nigeria’s domestic political climate, attributing the move instead to broader global security fears.

Nigerian Newssphere had reported that on April 8, 2026, the United States Department of State authorized the departure of non-emergency government personnel and their families from its embassy in Abuja, citing a deteriorating security environment across the country.

In an updated travel advisory, the department urged American citizens to reconsider travel to Nigeria, highlighting risks such as crime, terrorism, kidnapping, civil unrest, and inconsistent healthcare services.

Speaking during the commissioning of the new NRS headquarters in Abuja, Akpabio rejected claims that embassies were shutting down due to Nigeria’s upcoming elections, describing such assumptions as inaccurate.

“Some people say that even now, some embassies are closing down. Not many embassies are actually closing; many of the embassies are afraid of repercussions from their foes,” he said.

The Senate President explained that countries like the United States often take precautionary measures globally amid rising geopolitical tensions, particularly involving nations such as Iran.

“For instance, I can say that America is a bit worried about a bomb blast from Iran, and so across the world they have to reduce their staff in case Iran decides to attack their embassies,” Akpabio stated.

He cautioned Nigerians against linking the development to local political events.

“But people are thinking, ‘Oh, Nigerian embassies are closing because an election is coming. It’s not because an election is coming. Election will come and go, and God will protect you,” he added.

Akpabio further reassured citizens, expressing confidence that Nigeria remains safe despite prevailing global uncertainties.

A year later, Victor Osimhen joined the exclusive list after scoring for Napoli in their clash with AC Milan.

Lookman will now be aiming to take the next step by joining Finidi George and Martins among the Nigerians who have scored in the competition’s semi-finals.

Nigeria international Ademola Lookman has reacted to Atletico Madrid’s progression to the UEFA Champions League semi-finals despite a 2-1 defeat to Barcelona on Tuesday night.

Diego Simeone’s side suffered the loss at the Metropolitano Stadium but advanced with a 3-2 aggregate victory over their LaLiga rivals.

Barcelona made a flying start to the encounter, with Lamine Yamal opening the scoring just four minutes into the game, before Ferran Torres doubled the lead shortly after.

Lookman pulled one back for the hosts in the 31st minute, giving Atletico hope as they pushed to secure qualification.

Speaking after the match, the winger admitted the encounter was challenging but praised his team’s resilience.

“Going 2-0 down was tough. It was a game of two halves, really. We stuck in there; we dug in,” Lookman said.

“We didn’t get the win tonight, but we’re through to the semi-finals.”

Atletico Madrid will now face the winner of the quarter-final clash between Arsenal and Sporting CP in the semi-finals.

2027: APC panicking over Atiku-Obi ticket to unseat Tinubu—ADC’s Dele Momodu

0

Media mogul Dele Momodu has said a presidential ticket pairing Atiku Abubakar with Peter Obi would be a strong and competitive option for the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Momodu made the remark on Tuesday while appearing on Politics Today on Channels Television.

He noted that both politicians had previously worked together during the 2019 elections, suggesting that their existing partnership could be an advantage.

“I’d pair him (Atiku) with Peter Obi because they worked together in 2019, so they already share a similar temperament,” Momodu said.

“Peter Obi came third in the last election, so you don’t have to work too hard to maintain and attract the same group of people who support him.”

Momodu further claimed that the growing presence of prominent opposition figures within the ADC is causing concern in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

According to him, the consolidation of major opposition leaders under one platform could pose a significant challenge to the party.

“They cannot believe that we may have four or five major opposition leaders in one place, and some people will try to weaken them so none is strong enough to challenge the leader,” he said.

“It is reality; let’s not hide behind one finger. Despite assembling governors, ministers, and legislators, you can see clear signs of panic in the party,” Momodu added.

2027: Presidency replies ADC’s Aregbesola

0

The Special Adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, has strongly rebuked criticism from Rauf Aregbesola, describing the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as a coalition of “desperate politicians” lacking a clear national agenda.

The response follows remarks by Aregbesola, the ADC National Secretary, who had earlier criticized the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, calling it a “classic scam.”

Reacting via his X account, Onanuga dismissed the claim, stating, “No, Rauf. The real scammers are the politicians inside the SPV called ADC.”

He accused Aregbesola of echoing opposition narratives and misrepresenting the government’s performance. According to Onanuga, Aregbesola had also called on President Tinubu—his former mentor—to resign, while amplifying what he described as distorted accounts of the economy and security situation.

Onanuga further criticized Aregbesola’s record in public office, alleging that his eight-year tenure as governor of Osun State was marked by economic hardship, including unpaid salaries and difficulties for pensioners.

He also took aim at Aregbesola’s time as minister of interior, claiming that passport processing became problematic and citing security lapses such as prison breaks, including the Kuje correctional facility incident.

“It is ironic for someone who failed so woefully to secure our correctional centers to now lecture others on insecurity,” Onanuga said.

Defending the current administration, Onanuga maintained that while policy reforms have brought challenges, the government has introduced relief measures such as cash transfers and support for small businesses. He added that economic indicators were improving, pointing to growth in GDP, stronger foreign reserves, and a rising stock market as signs of increasing investor confidence.

He concluded by insisting that the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda “is not a scam.”

Rufai Oseni finally reacts to suspension from Arise TV

Arise News anchor Rufai Oseni has debunked reports alleging he was suspended from the station, describing the claims as false and misleading.

The rumor, which circulated widely online and was linked to a post by High Chief Lawrence Igbins Okoro, claimed Oseni was sanctioned after a disagreement with a superior during which he allegedly banged a table.

Responding via his X account, Oseni firmly refuted the allegation, stating that he is not facing any disciplinary action from his employers.

“This is a lie; the man is lying,” he wrote, adding, “I was not suspended; I am on a working visit to Germany.”

He urged the public to ignore the report, describing it as fabricated and calling on users to report the source of the claim.

“This is fake news; kindly report that account,” he added.

Oseni reiterated that he remains on official duty and has not been suspended by Arise News.
