The Federal Government is set to arraign Paganengigha Anagha, younger brother of former Minister of Petroleum Resources Timipre Sylva, today at the Federal High Court in Abuja over an alleged coup plot.

Anagha will be docked alongside three others—Sylva’s driver, Musa Mohammed; a plainclothes police officer, Ayuba Reuben; and an escort driver, Friday Lusa Paul—before the court.

Although details of the charges have not been officially disclosed, sources in the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation confirmed that the arraignment is scheduled to take place on April 14 at Court 12 of the Federal High Court.

The case is linked to allegations that emerged in 2025 accusing Sylva, a former governor of Bayelsa State, of involvement in a failed plot to overthrow the administration of Bola Tinubu.

Sylva, who is reportedly in the United Kingdom, was alleged to have financed the plot, with claims that funds ranging from ₦785 million to ₦46 billion were traced to accounts linked to him. Authorities have not publicly confirmed these figures.

The allegations intensified in October 2025 when operatives, including personnel from the Defense Intelligence Agency, reportedly raided properties linked to Sylva in Abuja and Bayelsa State, leading to the arrest of Anagha and others.

The alleged coup plot was also said to be connected to the detention of about 16 military officers accused of holding clandestine meetings aimed at overthrowing the civilian government.

In response, Sylva’s media aide, Julius Bokoru, dismissed the allegations, describing them as politically motivated and intended to damage his principal’s reputation ahead of the 2027 general elections. He maintained that Sylva is a committed democrat and a supporter of President Tinubu.

Bokoru also stated that Sylva was abroad receiving medical treatment at the time of the incidents.

Separately, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission had declared Sylva wanted in November 2025 in connection with a $14.8 million fraud investigation.

Swiss Nigeria’s Noah Okafor delivered an outstanding performance, scoring twice to lead Leeds United to a 2-1 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford on Monday.

Okafor opened the scoring early in the match, finding the net in the 5th minute before doubling Leeds’ advantage with another goal in the 29th minute of the first half.

Manchester United attempted a comeback in the second half, with Casemiro pulling one back in the 69th minute. However, the hosts were unable to find an equalizer.

United’s chances were further dented when Martinez was sent off in the 56th minute, reducing the team to 10 men.

The result marks Leeds United’s first win at Old Trafford since 1981, according to Nigerian Newsphere.

2027: Tinubu, Atiku, others can’t match my plan for Northern Nigeria- Peter Obi

0

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has expressed confidence in gaining support from northern Nigeria ahead of the 2027 elections, asserting that his plans for the region stand out among potential contenders.

Obi made the remarks on Monday during an appearance on Prime Time on Arise Television, where he outlined his vision for the North, describing it as a critical pillar of the country’s economic potential.

He said, “Nobody can do what I intend to do in the North. We will change the North. Our greatest asset as a country is in the North. We can make more money from agriculture than we make from oil.”

The former governor of Anambra State also stressed the need to strengthen democratic institutions, urging the government to support opposition parties.

According to him, a strong opposition is vital for ensuring accountability and effective governance.

“The government should protect the opposition. In fact, they should make opposition stronger and make it work,” he added.

ADC announces new convention venue in Abuja

0

The Dark Mark-led African Democratic Congress (ADC) has unveiled a proposed venue for its National Convention slated for Tuesday, April 14, 2026.

In a statement posted on its official X handle on Monday, the party disclosed that the event is expected to take place at the Rainbow Event Center in Garki Area 8, Abuja.

The statement read: “Proposed Venue for the ADC National Convention, Rainbow Event Center, Plot 1193A, Off Southern Parkway, Garki Area 8, Abuja.

“Located behind the FCDA/AGIS Building and in close proximity to the NTA Headquarters, Area 11.”

The development follows reports that alleged that authorities in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) declined the party’s request to use Eagle Square and the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, both located in Abuja, for the convention.

BREAKING: ADC suspends Atiku, Babachir

A faction of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Adamawa State has announced the suspension of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

The faction’s state chairman, Raji Sulaiman Zumo, disclosed the decision on Monday.

Also affected by the suspension is the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal.

The development comes amid ongoing turmoil within the party at the national level, which recently saw former Senate President David Mark removed as national chairman.

BREAKING: ADC: Judgment in fresh suit seeking Mark’s leadership removal by INEC shifted

0

The Federal High Court in Abuja has postponed its judgment in a suit seeking to stop Senator David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola from acting as national chairman and secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), shifting the date to April 14.

The ruling, initially scheduled for Monday, was delayed by Justice Musa Suleiman Liman due to other official commitments. A court registrar informed journalists and political stakeholders—who had gathered as early as 8 a.m.—of the development.

Following the announcement, many attendees, including supporters of both the plaintiff and the Mark-led faction of the party, gradually left the courtroom.

The case was filed by Kogi lawmaker Hon. Leke Abejide, who is challenging the legitimacy of the ADC leadership. The judge had earlier fixed April 13 for judgment after counsel to all parties adopted their written arguments.

In the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1637/2025, filed on February 15, 2026, Abejide named the ADC, former National Chairman Ralph Nwosu, David Mark, Rauf Aregbesola, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as defendants.

Abejide is asking the court to nullify the alleged transfer of party leadership from Nwosu to Mark and Aregbesola, describing it as unlawful. He is also seeking an order to restrain both men from presenting themselves as party leaders and to stop INEC from recognizing them in those roles.

However, the defendants have urged the court to dismiss the case, arguing that Abejide lacks the legal standing to file the suit. They maintain that the matter concerns the internal affairs of a political party, which they say is beyond the court’s jurisdiction.

The defense further contended that the current leadership emerged from a National Executive Committee meeting held on July 29, 2025—not July 2, as claimed by the plaintiff—and described the case as baseless and academic.

The United Kingdom has declined to participate in a proposed maritime blockade of the Strait of Hormuz spearheaded by the United States, as tensions with Iran continue to rise.

The stance follows a directive by US President Donald Trump instructing the US Navy to prevent vessels from entering or leaving the key shipping route. The decision came after extended nuclear negotiations between Washington and Tehran collapsed, reportedly ending after 21 hours without an agreement.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most vital energy corridors, accounting for nearly 20 percent of global oil shipments.

Citing a report by Sky News, a UK government spokesperson stressed the country’s priority is to ensure safe and open maritime navigation, rather than enforce restrictions in the region.

“We continue to support freedom of navigation and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, which is vital for the global economy and the cost of living domestically. The strait should not be subject to tolling. We are actively engaging with France and other partners to form a broad coalition to safeguard maritime movement,” the spokesperson said.

Although Washington had reportedly requested British assistance, including deploying minesweepers, UK officials clarified that while British naval assets with mine-hunting capabilities are present in the area, they will not be used to back the US-led blockade.

President Trump announced the proposed blockade on his Truth Social platform, describing it as a necessary response following the breakdown of diplomatic efforts with Iran. While noting that some progress had been made during the talks, he insisted that major issues—particularly Iran’s nuclear program—remain unresolved.

EPL: SuperComputer reduces Arsenal’s Title chances after defeat, Man City win

0

The Opta Supercomputer has downgraded Arsenal’s chances of winning the Premier League following the latest round of results over the weekend.

Mikel Arteta’s side suffered a surprising 2-1 defeat to Bournemouth at the Emirates Stadium, a result that dented their title hopes. Following the loss, Arsenal’s probability of lifting the trophy has dropped to 87.26%.

In contrast, Manchester City strengthened their position in the title race with an emphatic 3-0 victory over Chelsea on Sunday. The win has seen City’s chances rise to 12.74%, according to Opta’s latest projections.

Meanwhile, Manchester United, Aston Villa, and Liverpool have all been ruled out of the title race, with the Supercomputer giving them no chance of finishing top.

The title picture could shift further when City host Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, a fixture that may prove decisive in the race for the crown.

Hungary election: Orbán concedes defeat to Péter Magyar after 16-year reign

0

Hungary’s Prime Minister, Viktor Orbán, has conceded defeat following a decisive parliamentary election victory by opposition leader Péter Magyar of the Tisza Party.

Sunday’s parliamentary polls were held to elect 199 members of the National Assembly, with 100 seats required for a simple majority and 133 for a two-thirds supermajority. Projections from the National Election Office indicate that the Tisza Party is on track to secure a two-thirds majority based on early results.

Reacting to the projections, Orbán acknowledged the outcome, stating that although final results were still pending, the verdict of the electorate was “understandable and clear.” He also confirmed that he had congratulated the opposition, noting that “the responsibility and opportunity of governance were not given to us.”

Magyar, 45, celebrated the victory in a Facebook post, revealing that Orbán had personally called to congratulate him. “Thank you Hungary!” he wrote.

Magyar, who has served as a member of the European Parliament since 2024, leads the Tisza Party into what is expected to be a commanding position in the legislature.

Orbán, 62, had been Hungary’s prime minister since 2010, after previously holding office from 1998 to 2002. He returned to power with successive re-elections in 2014, 2018, and 2022.

Despite backing from prominent global figures, including Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin, and Benjamin Netanyahu, Orbán was unable to retain power.

Meanwhile, President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, described the outcome as a sign that Hungary is reaffirming its European alignment.

“Europe has always chosen Hungary,” she wrote on X. “A country reclaims its European path; the Union grows stronger.”
