I pray Nigeria does well to avoid migration into Ghana- Mahama

Ghanaian President John Mahama has emphasized the critical role of Nigeria’s stability in safeguarding Ghana’s security and economic wellbeing, warning that crises in the region’s largest country could trigger migration pressures across West Africa.

Mahama made the remarks at the African Heritage Awards 2026, where he highlighted the enduring historical, cultural, and economic ties between Nigeria and Ghana.

According to him, the fortunes of both nations are closely linked, stressing that instability in Nigeria could have ripple effects on neighboring countries.

“Nigeria is of keen security interest to us. If Nigeria does well, Ghana does well,” Mahama said.

He warned that Nigeria’s large population makes its stability a regional concern, noting that any major disruption could lead to significant migration into Ghana.

“When you have cousins, 250 million of them, you want them to do well so that one million of them don’t come drifting towards a small country like Ghana,” he added.

Mahama also expressed personal concern over Nigeria’s situation, stating that he often reflects on the country’s challenges and remains hopeful for improvement.

“I think about Nigeria a lot and hope things get better,” he said.

He further pointed to long-standing ancestral and migration links between the two countries, especially connections between Ghanaian communities and the Yoruba people in southwestern Nigeria.

“These shared roots remind us how closely connected we are and why stability in Nigeria matters to all of us,” Mahama noted.

His comments come amid growing concerns across West Africa over insecurity, economic pressures, and migration trends, with regional leaders continuing to stress Nigeria’s strategic importance to regional stability and prosperity.
