Kanu’s Release: Gov Otti Meets President Tinubu After Visiting IPOB Leader in Sokoto Prison

0

President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday met with Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, amid renewed moves to secure the release of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

The meeting is believed to be linked to ongoing political and legal consultations surrounding Kanu’s fate. The IPOB leader was on November 20, 2025, sentenced to life imprisonment by a Federal High Court in Abuja on terrorism-related charges — a judgment that has triggered nationwide protests and intensified calls for his freedom.

Governor Otti’s visit to the Villa comes just days after he met with Kanu at the Sokoto prison, where the separatist leader is currently serving his sentence. The Abia governor was accompanied during the prison visit by Kanu’s younger brother, Emmanuel Kanu; Abia Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Ikechukwu Uwanna, SAN; and his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ferdinand Ekeoma.

Following the visit, Otti restated the state government’s commitment to pursuing all lawful pathways toward securing Kanu’s release.

“While Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is free to appeal his conviction, I’m happy to inform you that I have activated, and will continue to work on, the already agreed strategy until his freedom is secured,” he said.

Tuesday’s meeting with President Tinubu is therefore widely viewed as part of Otti’s broader push for dialogue and a potential political resolution at the federal level.

As of the time of filing this report, details of their discussions had not been made public.

Recall that Gov Otti had earlier visited Nnamdi Kanu in prison.

Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court had sentenced Nnamdi Kanu to life imprisonment for terrorism-related offences.

NCC: Nigerian Senate pushes Bill to create single Toll-Free National Emergency Number

0

The Nigerian Senate on Tuesday took a major step toward establishing a unified, toll-free emergency number for nationwide use, as lawmakers pushed a bill seeking to replace Nigeria’s current assortment of helplines with a single, three-digit code.

The proposed legislation, titled “A Bill for an Act to Establish the National Emergency Toll Service (NETS),” aims to streamline the country’s emergency response architecture by harmonising the numerous police, fire, medical, and social-service hotlines into one simplified platform.

Lead sponsor Senator Yar’adua Musa (Katsina Central) said the initiative is designed to eliminate the confusion caused by multiple helplines operating across different states. He cited international standards—such as the UK’s 999 introduced in 1937, the US 911 in 1968, and India’s unified number launched in 2014—as proof of the life-saving potential of a single emergency line.

Musa stressed that the current system, especially in high-population areas like Lagos, often misguides residents and delays emergency response. “The multiplicity of numbers is counterproductive when urgent help is needed,” he noted.

Under the bill, any call or SMS to the proposed national number would be routed automatically to the nearest functioning emergency response centre.

Lawmakers observed that Nigeria’s mobile penetration, now approaching 90 per cent, provides a strong technological foundation for such a nationwide service.

Supporting the bill, Senator Ali Ndume (Borno South) linked communication gaps between citizens and security agencies to worsening insecurity. He described the proposal as “timely, very important, and urgently needed.”

Senator Tahir Monguno (Borno North) also endorsed the move, arguing that the public’s willingness to report suspicious activity has been hampered by the confusing array of existing helplines. A single toll-free number, he said, would strengthen citizen participation in security efforts.

Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, who presided over the plenary, praised the bill as a significant step toward improving national emergency response systems.

The Senate subsequently referred the bill to the Committee on Communications, directing it to submit its findings within four weeks.

If enacted, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) would manage the new emergency line, coordinate response agencies, and ensure seamless public access. Lawmakers believe the reform could dramatically enhance emergency service delivery and provide faster, more reliable assistance during critical moments.

EPL: Mikel Obi explains why Chelsea failed to beat Arsenal in 1-1 draw

0

Former Super Eagles captain John Mikel Obi has attributed Chelsea’s failure to defeat Arsenal in Sunday’s Premier League clash to the first-half red card issued to Moises Caicedo.

The London derby ended 1-1 at Stamford Bridge, with Caicedo receiving his marching orders in the 38th minute after a VAR review. Despite being reduced to 10 men, Chelsea went ahead shortly after the interval through a Trevor Chalobah header, before Mikel Merino drew Arsenal level.

The Blues have now accumulated seven red cards in 20 matches across all competitions this season — a disciplinary trend Mikel Obi described as unacceptable.

“That’s four red cards this season; it’s not good enough. I’ve spoken about it, and the manager needs to address it with the players because it’s costing us games,” he said on his podcast.

Reflecting on the match, Mikel insisted Chelsea would likely have taken all three points under normal circumstances.

“If you look at that game, if we finished with eleven men, I think we could’ve won. Maybe not easily, but comfortably, we could’ve secured a win.”

Why I cancelled All-White Party in Lagos-UBA Chairman, Tony Elumelu

Chairman of the United Bank for Africa (UBA), Tony Elumelu, has announced the cancellation of his annual TOE All-White Party, dedicating the moment to the memory of the six workers who died in the September fire outbreak at Afriland Towers, Lagos.

The tragic incident, which occurred at the high-rise building on Broad Street, shocked the business community and left several families devastated.

In a message shared via his Instagram story on Tuesday, Elumelu said he and his wife, Dr. Awele Elumelu, reached the difficult decision to suspend this year’s December 23 celebration, noting that the period calls for reflection and compassion rather than festivity.

“We’ve received countless messages about our annual TOE All-White Party scheduled for December 23. Your enthusiasm means a great deal to us. But following the recent fire incident that claimed precious lives, Awele and I have decided to cancel the party this year. This season will be devoted to remembering and honouring those we lost. They remain forever in our hearts,” he wrote.

Elumelu added that the traditional gathering will resume on December 23, 2026. He thanked the public for their understanding and extended his Christmas wishes to friends and well-wishers.

Enugu man allegedly kills girlfriend over cheating

A young woman was allegedly killed on Monday inside Bekay Pharmacy at the Total Roundabout in Nsukka, Enugu State, after a man identified as Emma Nwagwu reportedly attacked her during a confrontation over allegations of infidelity.

According to claims made by on-air personality Chijinkem Ugwuanyi, Nwagwu stormed into the pharmacy where the woman was receiving treatment and accused her of being romantically involved with another man, said to be a Divisional Police Officer (DPO) serving in the Nsukka area. Ugwuanyi alleged that the DPO was waiting outside in his vehicle at the time.

Witnesses reported that the situation escalated when Nwagwu allegedly slammed the woman’s head against a wall, causing her to collapse. She was said to have died instantly. An enraged crowd reportedly attempted to mob the suspect, but security operatives stepped in to prevent further violence.

Ugwuanyi also alleged that Nwagwu later attempted to confront the DPO, prompting the officer to draw his service pistol before bystanders intervened to separate both men.

The suspect was subsequently taken into custody at the Nsukka Police Area Command. Community sources claim he is a well-known political operative who has worked with successive administrations in Nsukka Local Government.

As of Tuesday morning, the Enugu State Police Command has not issued an official statement regarding the incident.

Ugwuanyi, in his post, described the suspect as “notorious” and accused him of killing the woman inside the pharmacy during the heated confrontation.

Christian genocide: US lawmakers meet over insecurity in Nigeria

The United States House Appropriations Committee will lead a joint congressional briefing on Tuesday to address the reported persecution of Christians in Nigeria.

US Congressman Riley Moore shared the notice on X, revealing that the session will be convened by House Appropriations Committee Vice Chair and National Security Subcommittee Chairman Mario Díaz-Balart, alongside members of the Foreign Affairs and Financial Services Committees.

The briefing aims to “spotlight the escalating violence and targeted persecution of Christians in Nigeria” and gather testimony for a comprehensive report. According to the announcement, the report will be guided by directives from former President Donald Trump and will outline steps Congress can take to support efforts to protect vulnerable faith communities worldwide.

The session coincides with strengthened US–Nigeria security cooperation. President Bola Tinubu recently approved Nigeria’s delegation to the new US–Nigeria Joint Working Group, established to implement security agreements following high-level talks in Washington led by National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu.

2027: Tinubu’s presidency is plotting to assassinate Atiku Abubakar—Timi Frank alleges

0

Former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Timi Frank, has raised an alarm over a plot by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s presidency to assassinate former Vice President Atiku Abubakar ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Frank, in a statement on Tuesday, described the recent withdrawal of police officers attached to Atiku—despite his statutory entitlement as a former vice president—as suspicious and part of what he claims is a broader plan to expose the opposition leader to danger.

He said no administration since 2007 had ever interfered with Atiku’s security detail, adding that the timing of the withdrawal—amid heightened insecurity—raises serious concerns.

“The claim that security is being withdrawn from all VIPs is a smokescreen,” Frank alleged. “The real intention is to isolate Atiku ahead of the 2027 election. This action is deliberate, dangerous, and clearly targeted.”

Frank likened the development to troubling political practices in parts of Africa where incumbents, he said, deploy state machinery to intimidate, arrest, or eliminate opposition figures in order to retain power. He argued that Atiku’s outspoken criticism of the current administration may have influenced the decision.

He also challenged the government to demonstrate transparency by withdrawing police protection from the president’s family members, associates, and appointees if the directive is truly broad-based.

His allegations follow the Nigeria Police Force’s commencement of the withdrawal of 11,566 officers assigned to VIPs nationwide, in line with President Tinubu’s directive ordering a reduction of police personnel attached to individuals amid escalating security challenges.

The presidency has not responded directly to Frank’s claims, and the police maintain that the withdrawals are part of a nationwide reform of VIP security arrangements.
