0

The naira on Tuesday recorded its highest appreciation against the United States dollar at the official foreign exchange market, according to data from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

CBN figures showed that the local currency strengthened to N1,401.22 per dollar, improving from N1,418.95 recorded on Monday.

This represents a day-on-day gain of N17.73, or 1.27 per cent, marking the naira’s strongest single-day appreciation since October last year.

In contrast, the naira remained unchanged at the parallel market, trading at N1,490 to the dollar on Tuesday, the same rate as the previous day.

The recent positive movement at the official market comes amid Nigeria’s growing external reserves, which rose to $46.04 billion as of January 26, 2026.

Nigerian Newssphere reports that the naira has now posted gains for two consecutive trading sessions at the foreign exchange market.

Osimhen names five all-time best Super Eagles players

Galatasaray forward Victor Osimhen has revealed his all-time favorite Super Eagles five-a-side lineup.

The 27-year-old striker made the selection during a quick-fire interview with Bleacher Report Football, where he was asked to choose his preferred Nigerian players by position.

Osimhen’s picks were dominated by former Super Eagles stars, with only one active international making the list.

For the goalkeeper position, he chose former captain Vincent Enyeama. In defense, Osimhen selected Fulham center-back Calvin Bassey, his only current national teammate and someone he has played alongside, including at the recently concluded AFCON.

In midfield, the Napoli-born striker opted for the legendary pairing of Austin “Jay-Jay” Okocha and former Chelsea midfielder John Mikel Obi. His attacking choices were Nigerian icons Nwankwo Kanu and Odion Ighalo.

The selection highlights Osimhen’s admiration for past and present Super Eagles greats who have left lasting marks on Nigerian football.

Coup Plot: Accused Officers to Face Court-Martial Under Civilian Rule — Kukasheka-Usman

0

Former Director of Army Public Relations, Brigadier General Sani Kukasheka-Usman (retd.), has said that officers accused of plotting a coup will be tried through a court-martial process, even under a civilian administration.

Kukasheka-Usman made this known on Tuesday while responding to questions on ARISE News, stressing that allegations of coup plotting are grave and must be handled in strict accordance with established military and civilian legal frameworks.

He explained that under military regulations, serving officers cannot be prosecuted until their commanders determine that an offence has been committed and that all due processes have been observed.

According to him, members of the armed forces are governed by military, civil, and international laws, with the Armed Forces Act clearly outlining the procedures for trying service personnel.

Kukasheka-Usman noted that Section 114 of the Armed Forces Act stipulates that military personnel accused of offences not specified as civilian crimes under the Act are to be tried by court-martial rather than regular civil courts.

He added that a court-martial carries powers equivalent to those of a State High Court or the Federal Capital Territory High Court, with its rulings subject to confirmation by the Defence Council and appeals permissible up to the Supreme Court.

The retired general commended both the military and the federal government for adhering to due process in handling the matter and urged the public to allow the legal procedures to run their full course.

Nigerian Newssphere recalls that the Nigerian military recently indicted 16 officers following investigations into an alleged coup plot.

He lost re-election the moment Ganduje raised his hands—Kwankwaso vows to frustrate Abba Yusuf after defection to APC

0

The 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has declared that Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf will not secure a second term in office following his defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Kwankwaso, a former governor of Kano State, made the assertion in an interview with BBC Hausa while reacting to Yusuf’s decision to dump the NNPP for the ruling party.

According to him, the governor effectively lost his reelection bid the moment former APC National Chairman and ex-Kano governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, publicly raised his hand in support.

Kwankwaso described Yusuf’s defection as a betrayal and warned that the governor would regret the move.

“We never expected this kind of betrayal from Governor Abba. He will regret his decision,” Kwankwaso said.

He added, “The moment Ganduje raises his hand, he has already lost the election. Let him first claim that we did not allow him to govern; we will respond accordingly.”

BREAKING: Nigeria in total darkness as National Grid Collapses Again

0

Nigeria’s national electricity grid collapsed on Tuesday morning, marking the second system failure recorded in January 2026.

The first grid collapse of the year occurred just last Friday, raising renewed concerns about the stability of the country’s power infrastructure.

Confirmation of the latest incident came from the official Nigeria National Grid account on X at about 10:53 a.m., with a brief post stating, “Grid Collapse.” A subsequent update assured the public that “Restoration is in progress!”

Data obtained from the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) showed that power generation dropped to zero megawatts following the collapse.

Several electricity distribution companies were affected by the outage, including those serving Ikeja, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, Benin, Eko, Enugu, Port Harcourt, Ibadan, Abuja, and Yola.

BREAKING: Court orders FCT Workers to Suspend Strike after Wike’s suit

Wike Minister of FCT

The National Industrial Court of Nigeria sitting in Abuja has ordered workers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to suspend their ongoing strike following a suit filed by the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, and the FCT Administration.

The court granted an interlocutory injunction restraining members of the Joint Union Action Committee (JUAC) from continuing the industrial action. The suit, marked NICN/ABJ/17/2026, was instituted against the JUAC Chairman, Rifkatu Iortyer, and Secretary, Abdullahi Umar Saleh.

In their application, the FCT Minister and the FCT Administration asked the court to bar the union leaders and their members from embarking on any strike, picketing, or lockout pending the determination of the case.

Delivering his ruling on Tuesday, Justice E.D. Subilim held that while the matter qualified as a trade dispute and met the required legal conditions, the right of workers to strike is not absolute.

The judge explained that once a dispute is brought before the National Industrial Court, workers are legally restrained from engaging in industrial action. He added that where a strike is already ongoing, it must be suspended until the court concludes the matter.

Justice Subilim consequently granted the interlocutory injunction, directing the union and its representatives to halt all industrial actions against the FCT Administration pending the final determination of the suit.

The court fixed March 23, 2026, for the substantive hearing of the case.

Fix your data—Rufai Oseni slams MTN, Glo, Airtel, others MNOs in Nigeria

0

Arise Television anchor Rufai Oseni has criticized telecommunications companies in Nigeria over declining data value and persistent network issues.

He urged Nigeria’s mobile network service providers to urgently fix their services.

Rufai made the call in a post shared on X on Tuesday, where he expressed frustration over how quickly his mobile data now gets exhausted compared to previous experiences.

According to him, a 10GB data bundle, which used to last much longer, now barely lasts a few days, raising concerns about transparency and service quality among network operators.

He also accused one of the country’s network providers of failing to honor its promise to automatically migrate customers following a change in the company’s name. Rufai said despite being an existing customer, his phone currently has no network reception.

“Dear Network providers, please fix your data. I did 10G, and it lasted a couple of days. This wasn’t the case before,” Rufai wrote.

He added, “There’s one network provider that told its former customers that they will migrate them when the network changes names, and I am a customer, but today my phone doesn’t have reception.”

Rufai’s comments come amid a drop in the quality of services by mobile network operators in the last months.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Communications Commission had in the past rallied stakeholders in the sector to address quality of network challenges.

2027: Don’t allow Trump to dictate for you—Reuben Abati tells Tinubu to retain Muslim-Muslim ticket

0

Veteran journalist and former presidential aide Dr. Reuben Abati has called on President Bola Tinubu to retain Vice President Kashim Shettima as his running mate ahead of the 2027 general election, urging the president to remain consistent with his earlier political choice.

Abati made the call on Tuesday while speaking on The Morning Show on Arise Television. He defended recent comments by the Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, on the possible political consequences of changing the Vice President, describing her remarks as neither offensive nor inappropriate.

According to Abati, Musawa was right to note that altering the presidential ticket could have serious political implications in the North, particularly among Kanuri and Hausa-Fulani voters. He stressed that such considerations are critical in Nigeria’s electoral calculations.

He argued that Nigeria’s political decisions should be shaped by Nigerians and not influenced by foreign political figures, insisting that President Tinubu must show courage by standing firmly by his earlier decision.

Abati said Musawa merely highlighted the potential consequences of changing the ticket, especially in a region he described as politically sophisticated, adding that her comments were misinterpreted by some within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

He further criticized attempts to downplay the Tinubu-Shettima Muslim-Muslim ticket, noting that the president had defended the choice in 2023 and should do the same in 2027.

Abati also dismissed suggestions linking Nigeria’s political choices to external actors, insisting that figures like former US President Donald Trump have no role in determining Nigeria’s democratic decisions.

BREAKING: Dangote Refinery raises petrol price by N100/Liter nationwide

0

Dangote Petroleum Refinery has announced a nationwide increase of N100 per liter in the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), marking a major shift in the domestic fuel market.

The refinery disclosed the adjustment in a statement issued on Monday, noting that its gantry price of petrol has risen to N799 per liter, while the retail price now stands at N839 per liter. This represents an increase from the N699 gantry price and N739 retail price maintained since December 2025.

“Under the current alignment, the PMS gantry price is N799 per liter, while MRS retail outlets are selling at N839 per liter,” the company said.

The Chief Executive Officer of Dangote Petroleum Refinery, David Bird, stated that despite the price increase, the refinery continues to supply the domestic market with approximately 50 million liters of PMS daily, adding that nationwide evacuation and distribution remain normal.

The development comes amid reports that the $20 billion refinery has resorted to gasoline imports to supplement supply following downtime at its Residual Fluid Catalytic Cracker (RFCC) unit, according to data from energy analytics firm Kpler.

As of Monday night, retail filling stations across the country, including those operated by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), were dispensing petrol at prices ranging between N805 and N830 per liter. Analysts warn that Dangote’s latest adjustment could trigger a broader price increase across Nigeria’s downstream petroleum sector.

Recall that Aliko Dangote, president of the Dangote Group, had in December last year assured Nigerians that the refinery would maintain a N739 per liter retail price nationwide in a bid to edge out fuel importers.

Speaking during a media briefing on December 14, Dangote said, “We don’t want people to sell petrol for more than N740 nationwide.”
