Why I didn’t buy Arsenal — Aliko Dangote

0

Nigerian billionaire businessman, African richest man, Aliko Dangote has explained why he decided against purchasing Arsenal FC despite previously considering a takeover of the club.

Dangote, a long-time supporter of the Premier League giants, said his attention at the time was fully directed towards completing his refinery project.

Speaking during an interview with Nicolai Tangen, Dangote said buying Arsenal eventually became “not worth the while.”

He said, “I’m a big Arsenal fan; yes, I nearly bought the team.

“When I was focused on buying Arsenal, I was also focused on the refinery getting to its completion.

“At the time, Arsenal was worth about 2 billion dollars, so I asked myself: Should I put my 2 billion dollars in Arsenal and allow the business to suffer, or continue the business and continue to remain a very big supporter of Arsenal?

“And today they are worth billions; it is not worth the while.”

‘Tinubu’s govt diverts N800bn FAAC funds for 2027 elections’- Salihu

0

A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Ladan Salihu, has alleged that the administration of President Bola Tinubu diverted N800 billion from Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) funds for preparations ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Salihu made the allegation on Wednesday while speaking during an interview on Prime Time, a program aired on Arise Television.

The former Director-General of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) claimed that the figures were based on reports linked to the World Bank as well as information from sources within government circles.

According to him, the allegations warrant a forensic audit and greater transparency in the management of public funds.

“These figures were not concocted or manufactured. They were extracted from an existing international agency report—the World Bank,” Salihu said.

“We also have sources within government. Even as they believe they have total control of the system, there are credible individuals within the structure who provide us with information.

“What we are saying is that the issue of this N800 billion is very serious. These are funds belonging to a sovereign nation already burdened by hardship, poverty, and deprivation.

“We expect the government to deny the allegation, but it should go further by providing full disclosure on the figures,” he added.

Mr. Jollof: VeryDarkman in trouble as court orders him to pay N30m for damages

A Federal High Court sitting in Effurun, Delta State, has ordered Nigerian social media personality VeryDarkMan to pay N30 million in damages to Mrs. Esinjemiyotan Uruneyonjuyei Atsepoyi, the wife of comedian Mr. Jollof, over defamatory statements made online.

The dispute began in September 2024 during an online clash between VeryDarkMan and Mr. Jollof, in which the social media critic accused Mr. Jollof’s wife of engaging in adultery with politicians and internet fraudsters to secure political appointments for her husband in Delta State.

Mr. Jollof had responded by describing VeryDarkMan as a “product of a broken home” and accused him of lacking proper upbringing.

Following the allegations, Mrs. Esinjemiyotan Uruneyonjuyei Atsepoyi filed a N500 million defamation suit against VeryDarkMan.

In a judgment delivered on May 13, 2026, Justice R. Harriman ruled in favor of the claimant, holding that the defendant failed to provide evidence to substantiate the allegations made against her.

According to the court document obtained by Nigerian Newssphere, the judge awarded N20 million as general damages and an additional N10 million as aggravated damages.

The court also directed VeryDarkMan to publish a retraction and apology to the claimant in two national newspapers and across all his social media platforms within 14 days.

Justice Harriman held that the statements were defamatory in their ordinary meaning and actionable under the law.

“I therefore have no hesitation in holding that the words complained of are defamatory in their natural and ordinary meaning and are actionable per se,” the judge said.

The court further restrained VeryDarkMan, his agents, and associates from making further defamatory publications against the claimant.

Efforts to solve quality of service challenges are on course—NCC

EVC NCC, Aminu Maida

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has noted recent public concerns regarding the quality of telecommunications services in parts of the country.

In a statement on Wednesday by NCC spokesperson Nnenna Ukoha, the Commission recognized the frustration experienced by consumers when calls drop, internet speeds slow down, data services become unstable, or service disruptions affect daily activities.

“Telecommunications services are now central to how Nigerians work, learn, do business, access essential services, and stay connected. Consumers are therefore entitled to reliable service and must receive value for the services they pay for.

“Over the past two years, improving quality of service has been a central regulatory priority for the commission. The NCC has intensified monitoring of mobile network operators, Internet service providers, and tower companies; strengthened data-driven oversight; and deepened engagement with relevant public institutions to address structural barriers that affect service delivery. These measures are intended to ensure that the industry moves towards measurable improvements.

“The sector is currently undergoing one of its most extensive network expansion and modernization cycles in recent years, following a prolonged period of underinvestment. In 2025 alone, Mobile Network Operators invested over N2.13 trillion in network infrastructure and upgrades, while Tower Companies invested an additional N373.8 billion across the sector. These investments supported the addition and upgrade of over 2,800 telecommunications sites nationwide, addressing coverage and capacity gaps in several locations.

“The interventions include the addition of faster 4G and 5G layers on existing sites, expansion of fiber backhaul to improve site capacity and resilience, targeted deployments in high-demand urban locations, rollout into underserved communities, and general network equipment refresh. These investments are welcome, but the Commission’s expectation is that they must translate into visible and measurable service improvements for consumers.

“This expansion drive is continuing in 2026 in response to Nigeria’s rapidly evolving digital ecosystem and the exponential growth in data consumption. The NCC has secured industry commitments for the addition and upgrade of over 12,000 sites within the year, of which close to 3,000 have already been delivered. The deployment of next-generation infrastructure is also accelerating, with more than 730 additional 5G sites already deployed across 27 states so far in 2026.

“In addition, and in line with its spectrum trading guidelines, the commission has facilitated the reallocation of a majority of idle and underutilized valuable radio spectrum among the three major mobile network operators, while also rearranging spectrum blocks to provide contiguity for operators. These interventions are designed to improve spectral efficiency, network capacity, and service performance.

“The Commission’s Quality of Service and Quality of Experience assessments, conducted using crowdsourced and field-based analytics, show gradual improvements in network capacity, coverage, and average data download speeds across several parts of the country. As subscribers continue to migrate to faster 4G networks, with 4G penetration rising from 45% in January 2024 to 54% currently, national median download speeds have increased from 16.5Mbps to 20Mbps within the same period. Power availability at telecom towers has also improved from a national average of 99.3% in January 2025 to 99.7% currently.

“These improvements are most evident in areas where recent upgrades and new site deployments have been completed. However, the Commission is equally clear that the pace and consistency of improvement must increase, particularly in locations where consumers continue to experience poor call quality, slow data speeds, congestion, and service instability.

In alignment with government policy to deepen fiber penetration to homes, businesses, schools, and public institutions, the Commission is also at an advanced stage of conducting a market study aimed at creating a wholesale market segment. This will enable smaller and more localized Internet service providers to expand service penetration and deliver internet services at lower cost. This complements government-backed initiatives such as Project BRIDGE and other efforts aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s national digital infrastructure.

The Commission is also addressing persistent external risks that continue to affect network performance, including frequent fiber cuts, vandalism of telecommunications infrastructure, theft at network sites, power-related disruptions, and denial of access for maintenance and operationsIn 2025 alone, over 27,000 avoidable fiber-cut incidents, primarily linked to road construction and vandalism, were recorded nationwide. Each incident has a direct impact on network performance, service availability, and consumer experience. The commission is working closely with the Office of the National Security Adviser and other stakeholders to operationalize the presidential order on critical national information infrastructure. Through this collaboration, organized syndicates involved in the theft and resale of telecom equipment have been disrupted, while engagement with federal and state ministries of works is putting in place a governance mechanism to reduce avoidable fiber cuts arising from road construction.

To improve transparency, the Commission has mandated operators to provide timely notifications to consumers whenever there is a major service outage and to restore affected services within defined timeframes. Details of major incidents are also logged on the commission’s Major Network Outages Reporting Portal at the time of the incident: https://uptime.com/statuspage/ncc.

The NCC continues to hold all key players in the quality of service value chain accountable. Under the updated Quality of Service Regulations 2024, which were gazetted in July 2024, mobile network operators and tower companies were allowed a defined transition period to order, ship, and install required equipment nationwide to enhance service quality. That transition period was not open-ended.

The Commission commenced enforcement in November 2025, including consumer compensation measures for poor service quality and additional investment obligations on tower companies where performance failures were identified.

This enforcement will continue, and where operators fail to deliver measurable improvements, the commission will take appropriate regulatory action, including escalation where necessary.

The NCC commends the Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy; the National Assembly; the Office of the National Security Adviser; and other critical stakeholders for their continued support of the Commission’s regulatory mandate. At the same time, the commission reiterates that addressing the underlying challenges affecting quality of service requires a whole-of-society approach.

We therefore call on all stakeholders—across federal, state, and local governments, as well as host communities—to support efforts aimed at protecting telecommunications infrastructure, facilitating timely access for maintenance, and creating an enabling environment for sustained investment in the sector.

“The NCC remains firmly committed to ensuring that all Nigerians enjoy reliable, affordable, and high-quality telecommunications services. The expectation is clear: the industry must now deliver measurable improvements, and the Commission will continue to enforce compliance in the interest of consumers and the wider economy”, NCC stated.

Popular Nigerian digital creator and security commentator, English Alhaji, has raised alarm after allegedly receiving threatening calls from suspected bandits.

The social media personality disclosed this in a video posted on his Instagram page, where he claimed his life was now in danger following comments he made about bandits captured in the Achepe community, Nasarawa State.

Watch the full video below:

Nigerian Newssphere recalls that about a week ago, English Alhaji praised youths in Achepe for resisting a bandit attack but criticized them for handing over arrested suspects to security agencies instead of killing them.

Reacting at the time, he had said, “The only mistake these people make is that this youth of Achepe catches these people, finishes them, and hands them over to the military.

“Why? Why? Do you want the army to reintegrate them? Abi, the ones they integrate never do, una? You want them to integrate more of the terrorists? Why hand them over to the military? Unalive this boy. You caught them and collected the AK-47 rifle from them and kpai’d them. Why give them to the police again? Youth of Achepe, you all did not do well for that one oo.”

However, in a new video now trending online, the content creator said suspected bandits contacted him through WhatsApp and threatened him over his remarks.

According to him, the callers displayed weapons and ammunition during the video call and questioned why he had been encouraging Nigerians to kill captured bandits instead of handing them over to security authorities.

“Nigerians, so yesterday in the afternoon, bandits called me on a video call. You can see the confidence; you guys are no longer hiding. They no longer cover their faces; they’re everywhere. They got my WhatsApp number on my Facebook page. They turned their camera to show me ammunition. Na now I know the kind of danger wey I dey,” he said.

He added, “They said, ‘Why do I tell people to be killing them? One of them said this thing: “When I tell people to unalive them when they catch them, don’t hand them over to the military; kpai them.” They said, “What if they catch me? They will do that same thing to me.”

The video has since sparked reactions online, with many Nigerians expressing concern over the growing boldness of criminal groups and the security situation in parts of the country.
