Civil war: Nigerian troops shouldn’t have fought Biafran soldiers—Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has said Nigerian troops should never have fought Biafran soldiers during the Nigerian Civil War, describing civil conflicts as tragic because citizens are forced to battle one another.

Obasanjo made the remark on Monday in Abeokuta while reflecting on his experiences during the 1967–1970 civil war and speaking on the need for national unity and reconciliation.

The former president, who served as a commander during the war, said civil wars are different from external conflicts because the ultimate goal should be peace and unity rather than destruction.

According to him, both Nigerian soldiers and Biafran troops were citizens of the same country, making the conflict emotionally painful for many of those involved.

“We shouldn’t have fought ourselves. Civil war is different from fighting external enemies because at the end of the day, you are fighting your brothers,” Obasanjo said.

He added that the lessons from the war should inspire Nigerians to embrace peace, dialogue, and unity in order to avoid another national conflict.

Rivers: APC disqualifies all Fubara-backed Assembly aspirants, clears Wike loyalists

The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has cleared aspirants loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, while disqualifying all aspirants believed to be aligned with Governor Siminalayi Fubara ahead of the party’s 2027 State House of Assembly primaries.

The party disclosed that 33 aspirants were cleared to contest in the primaries, while 65 others failed to scale through the screening process.

Among those affected are 32 aspirants reportedly loyal to Governor Fubara, all of whom were disqualified from participating in the exercise.

Meanwhile, serving members of the Rivers State House of Assembly said to be loyal to Wike were not cleared by the party.

In a statement issued by the APC State Publicity Secretary, Chibike Ikenga, aspirants who purchased the House of Assembly Expression of Interest and Nomination forms were advised to check their screening status at the party’s state secretariat located at 268B Aba Road, Port Harcourt.

Ikenga also directed dissatisfied aspirants to channel appeals arising from the screening exercise through the party secretariat.

According to him, the appeal process will take place on Tuesday, May 12, by 10 a.m. at the APC secretariat.

The party cited several reasons for the disqualification of aspirants, including failure to meet membership requirements, submission of incomplete documentation, irregularities in nomination forms, and inconsistencies in personal records.

Other grounds listed include alleged inducement and attempted bribery of screening committee members, failure to present voter cards or party membership cards, conflicting dates of birth, invalid affidavits, irregular membership details of nominators, and failure to provide the required number of nominators across wards.

The APC also noted that some affidavits submitted by aspirants failed to disclose material details relating to NECO certificates.

Nigerians are proud of you—Peter Obi hails Osimhen after Galatasaray title triumph

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has congratulated Victor Osimhen for helping Galatasaray S.K. win the Turkish Süper Lig title.

Osimhen scored twice in the decisive victory that sealed the championship for Galatasaray, drawing praise from Obi, who described the striker as a proud ambassador of Nigeria on the global stage.

In a post shared on his verified X handle on Monday, Obi said Osimhen’s achievements and conduct continue to bring honor to the country while inspiring millions of young Nigerians.

“Your resilience, discipline, and talent continue to inspire millions of young Nigerians to believe in the power of hard work, dedication, and excellence.

“You have remained a proud ambassador of Nigeria on the global stage, bringing honor to our nation through your achievements and conduct. Nigerians are immensely proud of you and your continued success,” Obi wrote.

The former Anambra State governor also stressed the importance of sports development, lamenting what he described as the neglect of the sector in Nigeria despite its huge potential for youth empowerment and national growth.

“I have often spoken about the transformative power of sports and the immense opportunities it offers to young people. This is why the persistent neglect of the sector in our country is deeply regrettable.

“I reiterate that a new Nigeria, where all sectors develop simultaneously for the balanced growth and health of the nation, is possible,” he added.

Arsenal strengthened their Premier League title charge with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over West Ham United on Sunday at the London Stadium.

The Gunners went into the encounter aware that Manchester City had earlier thrashed Brentford 3-0 to keep pressure on the title race.

Despite dominating possession for much of the first half, Mikel Arteta’s side struggled to convert their chances, while West Ham also threatened on the counterattack.

Arsenal eventually found the breakthrough in the second half when captain Martin Odegaard drove into the penalty area before setting up Leandro Trossard, who calmly fired home the decisive goal.

There was late tension for the visitors after West Ham believed they had grabbed an equalizer through Calum Wilson, but the effort was ruled out following a foul on Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya.

The result moves Arsenal five points clear of Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table as the title race intensifies.

Lionel Messi has become the fastest player in Major League Soccer history to record more than 50 goals and assists, surpassing former Toronto forward Sebastian Giovinco’s record.

The milestone was achieved on Saturday after the Inter Miami CF captain scored once and provided two assists in his side’s 4-2 victory over Toronto FC.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Messi has now registered 59 goals and 41 assists in just 64 MLS appearances.

The goal against Toronto also took the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner’s overall career tally to 907 goals and 410 assists.

Messi joined Inter Miami from Paris Saint-Germain F.C. a few years ago and has continued to impress since arriving in the United States.

The former FC Barcelona captain remains one of the standout performers in the league.

The Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, and Kingsley Chinda, a loyalist of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, have been successfully screened by the All Progressives Congress, APC, ahead of the May 21 gubernatorial primary election.

Fubara was cleared by the APC screening committee at the Plateau Governors Lodge, Abuja, on Saturday.

The Rivers State leader was among the 17 serving governors, whose credentials were verified and assessed by the committee.

Nigerian Newssphere reports that the gubernatorial election would be a clash of the titans as Wike’s ally, Chinda, vowed to cripple his re-election bid.

Recall that Chinda was earlier screened and cleared to face Fubara in the coming election.

EPL Table: Man City cuts Arsenal’s lead after Brentford victory

Manchester City reduced the gap on league leaders Arsenal to two points after a convincing 3-0 win over Brentford on Saturday.

Pep Guardiola’s side had dropped points earlier in the week following a dramatic 3-3 draw against Everton but responded strongly to keep their Premier League title ambitions firmly on track.

Despite dominating possession, City were unable to break the deadlock in the opening half as the match ended goalless before the interval.

The breakthrough eventually came after the restart when Jérémy Doku fired home a curling effort to put the hosts ahead.

Erling Haaland then doubled City’s advantage, bundling the ball over the line to give the champions full control of the contest.

Substitute Omar Marmoush added the third goal late in the game to seal an emphatic victory for Guardiola’s men.

Arsenal, however, will have the opportunity to restore their advantage to five points when they face West Ham

Court adjourns indefinitely ADC leadership suit against David Mark, Aregbesola

0

The Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday adjourned indefinitely a suit challenging the leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), following a request by the plaintiff for the transfer of the case to another judge.

Justice Emeka Nwite adjourned the matter sine die after disagreement among parties over a letter written by the plaintiff, ADC chieftain Nafiu Bala Gombe, to the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court seeking the reassignment of the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1819/2025.

The suit seeks to prohibit the leadership of former Senate President David Mark and former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola in the ADC.

The case had earlier been stalled after the second defendant, David Mark, filed an interlocutory appeal that eventually reached the Supreme Court.

At Friday’s proceedings, counsel to the plaintiff, Luka Musa Haruna, informed the court that the Supreme Court had delivered judgment in the appeal on April 30, 2026.

According to him, the apex court dismissed the appeal for lacking merit and also set aside the Court of Appeal’s order staying proceedings in the substantive suit.

“The interlocutory appeal of the 2nd defendant has traveled to the Supreme Court. My Lord, we are glad to inform this honorable court that on the 30th day of April 2026, the Supreme Court delivered its judgment on the interlocutory appeal dismissing the said appeal for lacking in merit,” Haruna said.

The lawyer, however, disclosed that the plaintiff had also written a letter dated May 4, 2026, to the chief judge of the Federal High Court requesting the transfer of the matter to another judge.

He urged Justice Nwite to await the administrative decision of the chief judge on the request.

“At this juncture, we must humbly pray to your Lordship to wait for the administrative decision of the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court,” he said.

The application was strongly opposed by the defense team, which accused the plaintiff of attempting to frustrate the accelerated hearing earlier ordered by the Court of Appeal and upheld by the Supreme Court.

Counsel to the first defendant, Realwan Okpanachi, who represented S.E. Aruwa, argued that the plaintiff misrepresented the Supreme Court judgment, insisting that the apex court upheld the order for accelerated hearing of the case.

Okpanachi further faulted the plaintiff for allegedly ambushing the defendants with the transfer request.

“We have not received any communication regarding that application. My Lord, so as it is, we don’t know the form or the content of that application. Therefore, we take the approach of the plaintiff as an ambush,” he said.

He added that the move was an attempt to frustrate the accelerated hearing ordered by the appellate courts.

Counsel to the second defendant, Sulaiman Usman, also condemned the application, describing it as “forum shopping and judge shopping.”

Usman told the court that the Supreme Court had commended Justice Nwite over his handling of the case.

“So, my Lord, for the plaintiffs to come back to this court and to inform us today that they have written a private correspondence to the Honourable Chief Judge and to hinge that to make a request for this court to await the outcome of that private correspondence is not only unfortunate, my Lord, but a dangerous trend that must not be allowed to stand,” he argued.

Other defense lawyers, including M.E. Sherriff and P.I. Oyewole, aligned themselves with the submissions, describing the application as improper and legally strange.

Responding, Haruna insisted that the plaintiff stood by the application and faulted the defense for attacking a letter they had not seen.

In his ruling, Justice Nwite held that the court could not take any action on the letter without hearing all parties involved.

“Taking a decision or any action in such a letter without hearing from the defendants will amount to a breach of their fundamental right in this suit,” the judge ruled.

He further stated that since the letter was addressed to the chief judge, the trial court could not make any pronouncement on it.

“This matter is best adjourned sine die to afford the parties time to properly file a Certified True Copy of the judgment of the Supreme Court in the interlocutory appeal in the suit, to serve the defendants with the letter addressed to the Honorable Chief Judge, and finally to await further or any directive from the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court,” Justice Nwite said.

The matter was subsequently adjourned indefinitely.

BREAKING: Court rejects Sowore’s Submission in DSS cyberbullying trial against Tinubu

President Tinbu

Justice Mohammed Garba Umar of the Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed the no-case submission filed by activist Omoyele Sowore in the cyberbullying charges brought against him by the Department of State Services (DSS) over alleged comments about President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

In a ruling delivered on Friday, Justice Umar held that the DSS had established a prima facie case against Sowore and sufficiently linked him to the alleged offenses to warrant him entering a defense.

The court subsequently ordered Sowore to open his defense in the two-count charge filed against him.

The DSS had accused the activist of cyberbullying the president by allegedly referring to Tinubu as a “criminal” on his X (formerly Twitter) handle.

Sowore had earlier urged the court to discharge and acquit him, arguing in his no-case submission that the prosecution failed to establish evidence connecting him to the alleged offenses.

However, Justice Umar dismissed the application, ruling that the prosecution had presented enough evidence for the matter to proceed to the defense stage.
