Rivers APC Primary: Wike’s Kinsman, Chinda emerges frontrunner as Fubara, Cole, Alabo withdraw from Guber race

0

The path appears clear for Ogundu Chinda, a member of the 10th National Assembly representing the Obio/Akpor Federal Constituency and an ally of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to secure the All Progressives Congress, APC, governorship ticket in Rivers State.

This follows the withdrawal of incumbent Governor Siminalayi Fubara from the APC governorship race ahead of Thursday’s primary election.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Fubara said his decision to step down from the contest was driven by his commitment to peace and stability in Rivers State.

Moments after Fubara’s announcement, George-Kelly Alabo also withdrew from the APC gubernatorial race.

Earlier, the APC’s 2023 governorship candidate in Rivers State, Tonye Cole, had equally announced his withdrawal from the 2027 governorship contest.

The exit of Fubara, Cole, and Alabo from the race is widely seen as boosting Chinda’s chances of clinching the APC governorship ticket.

The development comes amid heightened political activities in the state, with Wike recently arriving in Port Harcourt ahead of the party’s governorship primary.

The latest twist also signals that Fubara will not seek re-election as Rivers State governor in 2027.

Fubara and Wike have remained embroiled in a prolonged political feud despite several reconciliation efforts and peace agreements.

Reacting to the withdrawals, human rights lawyer Chetam Nwala claimed the governor was never genuinely interested in the race.

“He has never been in the race. He was pretending all along, as he has always done,” Nwala said.

Arsenal are reportedly ready to hand manager Mikel Arteta a new contract that would make him one of the highest-paid coaches in world football.

According to reports from Mail Sport, the proposed deal comes after Arteta guided the Gunners to their first Premier League title in 22 years this season.

Arsenal were officially confirmed champions on Tuesday night after Manchester City failed to defeat AFC Bournemouth.

Arteta’s current contract is due to expire next summer, but negotiations over an extension are said to be at an advanced stage. The new agreement is expected to include a significant salary increase for the Spaniard.

Diego Simeone is believed to be the highest-paid manager in world football, earning about £26 million annually at Atlético Madrid, with Arteta reportedly set to move closer to that figure.

The Arsenal boss currently earns around £10 million per year, with additional bonuses reportedly tied to Champions League qualification.

Meanwhile, Pep Guardiola is said to earn about £20 million annually at Manchester City. Arteta is also expected to become the Premier League’s longest-serving manager once Guardiola leaves the club this summer.

CBN retains interest rate

The Central Bank of Nigeria has retained the country’s Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) at 26.50 percent.

CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso disclosed this during a press briefing after the apex bank’s 305th Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting held in Abuja.

According to Cardoso, the decision was unanimously adopted by all MPC members.

He explained that the committee also retained the Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) at 45 percent for commercial banks and 16 percent for merchant banks. The 75 percent CRR on non-TSA public sector deposits was equally maintained.

The governor further stated that the liquidity ratio remained at 30 percent, while the standing facilities corridor was adjusted to +50/-450 basis points around the MPR.

The latest decision comes despite recent findings from the CBN’s survey showing that many Nigerians favoured a reduction in interest rates.

Nigeria’s inflation rate had increased to 15.69 percent in April from 15.38 percent recorded in March.

Recall that the MPC reduced the interest rate by 50 basis points during its 304th meeting in February 2026.

Residents and youths in Oyo State staged a protest on Wednesday over the recent abduction of students and teachers in the state.

In a video obtained by Nigerian Newssphere, protesters were seen chanting, “Bring back our children,” “Bring back our teachers,” and “Free our children and teachers.”

The protest, which is ongoing in Ogbomoso, saw residents express anger over worsening insecurity and economic hardship. Demonstrators accused the government of failing to protect lives and improve the living conditions of citizens.

Some protesters were also seen pulling down campaign billboards and banners bearing the image of President Bola Tinubu.

The demonstration follows the recent abduction of dozens of pupils and a teacher during coordinated attacks on three schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.

Recall that an abducted teacher was reportedly beheaded, while at least 10 persons were killed by bandits in Oyo and Katsina states.

Pastor Dolapo Lawal apologizes to Arsenal fans after Club’s Premier League historic Triumph

0

The lead pastor of Zoe Household Global, Dolapo Lawal, has publicly apologized to Arsenal supporters following the club’s Premier League title victory.

The cleric, who recently faced criticism on social media over his earlier comments about the club, issued the apology after Arsenal emerged as champions on Tuesday.

In a trending video circulating online, Pastor Lawal reversed his previous remarks and announced a special thanksgiving service for Arsenal fans across all branches of his church on Sunday.

“Arsenal fans, special thanksgiving for you in Zoe Household on Sunday. Come with your jersey. This is my public apology. Special Thanksgiving service across all Zoe Household campuses. Praise God, congrats,” he said.

A month earlier, during a sermon and exchange with members of his congregation, the pastor had insisted Arsenal would not win the Premier League title.

He had claimed the club was “cursed” and jokingly advised women to avoid dating Arsenal supporters.

“Arsenal cannot win. Didn’t I say it? You were here when I said it. I said it three months ago: even if the gap is 29 points, Arsenal cannot win. There’s a way you will watch a club; you don’t need a prophet. And peradventure if you are here as a lady, if an Arsenal fan should ask you out, it’s a bad sign; you need to check yourself,” he had said.

The apology video has since generated reactions online, with many football fans responding humorously to the pastor’s change of stance.

2027: Jonathan, Obi, Makinde’s presidential bids may hurt Tinubu—Dele Momodu

0

A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, or ADC, Dele Momodu, has warned that multiple presidential aspirants from the South could weaken the region’s chances ahead of the 2027 general election.

Momodu specifically mentioned Peter Obi, Goodluck Jonathan, and Seyi Makinde, saying their ambitions may ultimately backfire if they all remain in the race.

Jonathan is reportedly preparing to contest the 2027 presidency on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, while Makinde has declared interest in running under the African Peoples Movement, APM.

Obi, who was the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in 2023, recently exited the ADC coalition and joined the Nigerian Democratic Congress, NDC. He was screened on Tuesday by the party’s presidential screening committee.

The latest political developments suggest that at least four major southern politicians, including President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress, APC, could battle for the presidency in 2027.

Meanwhile, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has maintained that he does not believe in zoning and may emerge as the major northern contender in the election.

Momodu, who is known to support Atiku, argued that the North could have an advantage if it presents a single candidate while southern politicians remain divided.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television, Momodu said, “If the North fields one candidate, nobody can defeat them. I’m sure about that.

“Everybody shouting today that they want to be president is from the South. If Peter Obi, Jonathan, and Seyi Makinde continue in the race, trust me, it is going to backfire for the South.”

Insecurity: Arrest Sheikh Gumi Now—Adeyanju tells Nigerian Govt

0

Human rights activist and lawyer Deji Adeyanju has called on the Federal Government to immediately arrest controversial Islamic cleric Ahmad Gumi over alleged remarks linked to the worsening insecurity in the country.

Adeyanju made the call on Wednesday following a viral video in which Gumi was allegedly seen defending bandits amid growing concerns over attacks across parts of Nigeria.

In the video circulating online, the cleric reportedly stated that Fulani herdsmen “are going nowhere,” adding that “they are part of us and we are part of them.” We must live with them.”

Reacting in a post shared on his Facebook page, Adeyanju described terrorist sympathizers as terrorists, insisting that individuals who allegedly promote or defend criminal activities should face the law.

According to him, people like Gumi can only thrive in a country without effective governance.

“People like Gumi can only survive in a country without a government. “Terrorist sympathizers are terrorists,” he wrote.

He further alleged that the cleric’s comments and actions encourage terrorism in Nigeria, urging authorities to arrest him as a warning to others.
