Spain have been crowned champions of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after edging defending champions Argentina 1-0 in Sunday’s dramatic final.
La Roja secured only the second World Cup title in their history, adding to the crown they first won in South Africa in 2010.
Luis de la Fuente’s side dominated proceedings for much of the contest, controlling possession and creating the better chances, while Argentina struggled to find their rhythm.
Despite Spain’s superiority, the match remained goalless after 90 minutes, forcing the final into extra time.
Argentina’s hopes suffered a major setback in the first half of extra time when midfielder Enzo Fernandez was sent off after receiving a second yellow card, reducing the South Americans to 10 men.
Spain eventually made their numerical advantage count early in the second period of extra time. Ferran Torres fired home from close range after Nico Williams knocked the ball into his path, scoring the decisive goal that sealed a famous victory.
The triumph sees Spain reclaim the World Cup for the first time in 16 years, while Argentina’s reign as world champions comes to an end.
