La Roja dominated proceedings for much of the final and eventually found the breakthrough in the second half of extra time, when Ferran Torres fired home from close range after connecting with a knockdown by Nico Williams.
The victory secured Spain’s second FIFA World Cup title, adding to their historic triumph at the 2010 tournament in South Africa.
In addition to winning the championship, Spain swept several of the tournament’s top individual honours, with Rodri named the Golden Ball winner as the competition’s best player.
Goalkeeper Unai Simon claimed the Golden Glove award after an impressive campaign between the posts, while teenage defender Pau Cubarsi was named the Best Young Player of the tournament.
France captain Kylian Mbappe finished as the tournament’s leading scorer to win the Golden Boot despite Les Bleus ending their campaign in fourth place.
Spain also received the Fair Play Award in recognition of their discipline throughout the competition.
