Andy Burnham replaces Keir Starmer as UK PM

Andy Burnham has officially become the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom following a formal audience with King Charles III at Buckingham Palace on Monday.

Burnham’s appointment came after the resignation of Keir Starmer, who stepped down after serving for two years as prime minister.

Nigerian Newssphere reports that Starmer left 10 Downing Street on Monday morning and, in his farewell address, maintained that his administration had made Britain a better and fairer country.

“I am confident that Britain is now stronger and fairer than it was two years ago,” Starmer said.

“I go with good grace, I go with a smile, and I go proud of everything that we have achieved,” he added.

Following Starmer’s resignation, King Charles III formally received him at Buckingham Palace before inviting Burnham to form a new government. Burnham accepted the King’s invitation, completing the constitutional process required for him to assume office as prime minister.

The 56-year-old becomes the sixth person to occupy 10 Downing Street as British prime minister in the last 10 years, marking another leadership transition in the country’s recent political history.
