Sit-at-home: IPOB slams ban on spokesperson Emma Powerful

0

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has announced the discontinuation of the use of the pseudonym “Emma Powerful” for issuing its official statements, citing abuse and compromise of the name.

The decision was disclosed in a statement released on Saturday by Mazi Chukwukadibia Edoziem, Head of the Directorate of State (DOS) of IPOB. According to him, the directive forms part of efforts to align the organization’s operations with globally recognized institutional best practices.

The DOS explained that “Emma Powerful,” which had been operationally used by the IPOB Publicity Secretary to disseminate press releases, has been misused and compromised, posing serious risks to the movement and its leadership.

The statement noted that any communication issued in the name of IPOB carries significant responsibility, adding that the continued use of the pseudonym now presents clear dangers to the organization and the Biafran self-determination struggle.

It further alleged that some individuals and groups had exploited the pseudonym to undermine peace and security in Biafraland.

As a result, the Directorate of State resolved that all official IPOB press statements must henceforth be issued solely on the organisation’s official letterheaded paper. IPOB also made it clear that it will no longer release statements under the name “Emma Powerful.”

For clarity, the group warned that any future statement issued under the pseudonym does not originate from IPOB leadership and does not represent the position of the Directorate of State.

Additionally, the DOS stressed that it did not authorize any individual or group to declare a lockdown or sit-at-home order across Biafraland on Monday, February 2, 2026.

However, Emma Powerful has not responded to the directive as of filing the report.

EPL table: Arsenal restore seven-point lead after massive 4-0 win at Leeds

0

Arsenal bounced back from last week’s 3-2 defeat to Manchester United with a commanding 4-0 victory over Leeds United at Elland Road on Saturday.

The loss to United had seen the Gunners’ advantage at the top of the Premier League table trimmed to four points. However, Mikel Arteta’s side responded in style, extending their lead once again.

Fresh from a midweek UEFA Champions League win over Kairat Almaty, Arsenal took control early in the contest. Martin Zubimendi opened the scoring in the first half, heading home a fine cross from Noni Madueke.

The visitors doubled their advantage before the break when Leeds goalkeeper Karl Darlow inadvertently turned the ball into his own net.

Arsenal maintained their dominance after halftime, with Viktor Gyokeres and Gabriel Magalhaes adding further goals to seal a comprehensive win.

The result sees the Gunners re-establish a seven-point cushion at the summit of the table, ahead of second-placed Manchester City’s clash with Tottenham

Recapitalization: Otedola explains 92% drop in First HoldCo, FBN profit ahead of CBN deadline

0

Nigerian billionaire and Chairman of First HoldCo, Femi Otedola, has explained the sharp 92 percent decline in the company’s profit for the 2025 financial year, attributing it to a deliberate cleanup of legacy bad loans ahead of the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) recapitalization deadline in 2026.

In a statement posted on his X (formerly Twitter) account on Saturday, Otedola said First HoldCo took a one-off hit of N748 billion to recognize old non-performing loans rather than continue to carry them on its books.

According to him, the decision was taken in line with the CBN’s renewed push for banks to confront longstanding issues instead of deferring them indefinitely. He noted that the apex bank, under the leadership of Governor Olayemi Cardoso, is insisting that financial institutions stop “kicking problems down the road.”

Otedola, who recently increased his stake in First HoldCo to 18.12 percent, stressed that the group remains fundamentally strong despite the profit slump. He revealed that the company generated N2.96 trillion in interest income and N1.91 trillion in net interest income, which provided the capacity to absorb the heavy provisioning and still remain stable.

He added that the significant profit decline was the direct result of the one-time cleanup exercise, describing it as a painful but necessary step for long-term sustainability.

Otedola expressed confidence that First HoldCo would enter 2026 in a stronger position, well ahead of the March 31 recapitalization deadline set by the CBN. He said the bank is now “lighter, cleaner, and better prepared” for the recapitalization era and future growth.

According to him, clearing bad loans, maintaining a strong income base, and adopting a long-term strategy will ultimately drive real value creation for the group.

Two players are set to exit Chelsea as the Blues eye Jacquet

Chelsea are pushing to sign Rennes defender Jeremy Jacquet as the club prepares for the departures of Axel Disasi and Aaron Anselmino before the January transfer window shuts.

Sky Sports News reports that Jacquet has already indicated his desire to complete a move to Stamford Bridge. The decision now rests on whether Chelsea can strike an agreement to bring the defender in immediately or wait until the summer transfer window.

At the same time, Disasi and Anselmino are expected to leave the west London club on loan. The report adds that loan opportunities could open up at Strasbourg and Rennes for the duo.

Chelsea are looking to streamline their squad while also strengthening manager Liam Rosenior’s options for the remainder of the season.

Fela Kuti belongs in a league of his own, should idolised —Femi Reacts to Wizkid comparison

0

Grammy-nominated Afrobeat musician and eldest son of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, Femi Kuti, has weighed in on the controversy surrounding comparisons between singer Wizkid and the late Afrobeat legend.

The debate was sparked after Wizkid claimed he was “bigger” than Fela while responding to criticisms from Seun Kuti and his fans, who opposed likening the Ojuelegba crooner to the Afrobeat icon.

Speaking during an interview with Arise TV via Skype from Los Angeles, Femi Kuti said he regretted that the controversy arose, noting that he maintains good relationships with both Seun Kuti, his younger brother, and Wizkid.

He described the debate as a misplaced priority, stressing that musicians—especially younger artists—should focus more on advocating for better governance rather than engaging in what he called trivial distractions.

According to Femi, Fela’s impact on music and society places him beyond comparison with any other artist.

“Fela is in a league of his own,” he said, adding that the late Afrobeat pioneer should be revered rather than compared. “Fela is our father, and even younger artists respect him. He is the musical and artistic template in Nigeria. He should be put in a category of his own and simply idolized and respected.”

Femi declined to take sides in the Wizkid–Seun Kuti exchange, describing Wizkid as “like a son” to him and reiterating his wish that the issue had never surfaced.

Femi Kuti is currently in Los Angeles, where he is expected to receive his father’s posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2026 Grammy Awards ceremony this weekend.

United States President Donald Trump has praised the newly released documentary Melania by the country’s first lady, Melania.

This comes as he said he thoroughly enjoyed it after watching it for the second time.

Trump disclosed this in a post on X on Friday, following the film’s premiere. According to him, the documentary was well received by the audience.

“Last night I saw MELANIA for the second time. The audience loved it, and so do I. Check it out—a must-see!” he wrote.

The documentary, co-produced and directed by Brett Ratner, chronicles the life and journey of the former First Lady of the United States, Melania Trump.

The release of the film coincided with developments in the United States, as the Department of Justice on Friday made public additional files related to the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

US orders evacuation of Embassy staff from Niger

0

The United States has ordered the departure of non-essential staff and family members from its embassy in Niamey, Niger, citing worsening security conditions following a recent militant attack near the capital’s international airport.

In a travel advisory issued on Friday, the U.S. Department of State warned Americans against travelling to Niger due to the risks of crime, civil unrest, terrorism, kidnapping, and limited healthcare services. The advisory said the U.S. government is no longer able to provide routine or emergency assistance to citizens outside Niamey because of safety concerns.

According to the guidance, a state of emergency and movement restrictions remain in force across large parts of the country. Foreign travellers outside the capital are required to move with military escorts, while areas under emergency measures are considered restricted and subject to sudden changes.

U.S. government personnel in Niger have been directed to travel only in armored vehicles, comply with curfews, and avoid restaurants and open-air markets. American citizens were advised to take similar precautions.

The evacuation order follows an overnight attack on Diori Hamani International Airport in Niamey between January 29 and 30. The Islamic State’s media arm, Amaq News Agency, claimed responsibility, saying fighters of the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (ISGS) carried out a coordinated assault on Air Base 101 located within the airport complex, causing significant damage. Nigerien authorities have yet to release official casualty figures.

Security sources said the attackers, riding motorcycles, targeted military facilities co-located with the civilian airport, including drone platforms and air defense systems. Nigerien Defence and Security Forces, supported by Russian African Corps personnel, reportedly repelled the attack, neutralizing and arresting several assailants. Airport operations later resumed.

2027: Abia voters, not cabals, will decide state’s political destiny —Wabara

0

Former Senate President Adolphus Wabara has declared that no individual, group, or political cabal will be allowed to determine the political destiny of Abia State ahead of the 2027 governorship election.

Wabara made the statement on Friday at a grand civic reception organized by his Ukwa la Ngwa kinsmen in honor of Governor Alex Otti at the Enyimba Stadium, Aba. He stressed that the power to decide who governs Abia in 2027 rests solely with the electorate through the ballot.

His remarks came as stakeholders from the Ukwa la Ngwa nation, which comprises nine local government areas, formally endorsed Governor Otti for a second term and announced a N100 million donation to support the process of securing his nomination.

Reacting to recent threats by a coalition of former Abia governors to block Otti’s second-term bid and hand over the state to the All Progressives Congress (APC), Wabara said the era of imposing leaders on the people had ended.

The Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) insisted that leadership must be earned, not manipulated.

“Leadership must be based on competence, credibility, and a proven track record, not imposed through selfish interests and political maneuvering. No cabal will decide Abia’s political destiny,” he said.

Wabara also urged Governor Otti not to be distracted by political pressure, noting that no alliance of “desperate forces” should intimidate him if he chooses to seek re-election in 2027.

YEREVAN, ARMENIA, SEPTEMERT 6, 2025: Cristiano Ronaldo of Portugal during the FIFA World Cup 2026 Qualifying match between Armenia and Portugal at Republican Stadium in Yerevan, September 6, 2025

Cristiano Ronaldo continued his remarkable scoring run on Friday, netting the 961st goal of his illustrious career as Al Nassr defeated Al Kholood 3-0 in the Saudi Pro League.

The Matchday 18 encounter was played at the King Abdullah Sport City Stadium in Buraydah, where the Al Nassr captain found the back of the net to register his 17th goal of the season.

The 40-year-old is now level on the league’s scoring chart with Al Qadsiah forward Julian Quinones, who also scored in his side’s clash with Al Hilal on Thursday.

Ronaldo is closing in on another historic landmark, sitting just 39 goals shy of the coveted 1,000-career-goal milestone.

The Portugal international has won the Saudi Pro League Golden Boot in each of the last two seasons and remains a key figure for Al Nassr, who are currently third on the table with 40 points, six behind leaders Al Hilal.

Onitsha Market Shutdown: Traders have the right to observe sit-at-home—BRGIE condemns Soludo’s action

0

The Prime Minister of the Biafra Republic Government in Exile (BRGIE), Ogechukwu Nkere, on Friday condemned the decision of Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, to shut down the Onitsha Main Market and threaten its permanent closure.

Nkere’s reaction followed Governor Soludo’s announcement of a one-week shutdown of the market over the continued observance of Monday sit-at-home by traders. The decision sparked protests by traders, which degenerated into chaos in parts of the state. In a subsequent speech, the governor warned that the market could be closed indefinitely if the situation persisted, a move that has drawn widespread criticism in recent days.

In a statement issued on Friday, Nkere, who was recently elected to replace Simon Ekpa following Ekpa’s sentencing in Finland, described Soludo’s actions as unjust and targeted at innocent traders.

He said the BRGIE faulted what he described as threats against traders, including alleged plans to demolish shops and markets in Onitsha.

According to him, traders in Onitsha have the right to freedom of expression, including the voluntary choice to observe sit-at-home actions in solidarity with Nnamdi Kanu and to express opposition to what he termed Nigeria’s oppression.

Nkere maintained that the sit-at-home actions were undertaken by the traders of their own free will, insisting that neither the BRGIE nor its affiliates coerced or compelled anyone to participate in the protests.

He further drew parallels with historical examples of civil disobedience, citing India’s independence struggle under Mahatma Gandhi, which involved peaceful resistance, economic boycotts, and non-compliance.

“Charles Soludo, whom the Biafra Republic Government in Exile considers an illegitimate governor, should not be targeting innocent Onitsha traders, including threatening to demolish their shops and markets. Onitsha traders have the right to freedom of expression, including the voluntary decision to observe sit-at-home actions in solidarity with Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and to express their displeasure towards Nigeria’s oppression.

“These actions are undertaken entirely of the Onitsha traders’ own volition. The BRGIE and its affiliates in the homeland did not coerce or compel traders in any way to engage in sit-at-home protests. ” There is historical precedence where people have achieved independence through civil disobedience, such as when Mahatma Gandhi and the people of India achieved independence from Great Britain through peaceful disobedience, which included social and economic boycotts and non-compliance.”

Governor Soludo’s government has yet to formally respond to Nkere’s statement as tensions surrounding the Onitsha Main Market shutdown continue to stir debate across Anambra State.
