Mercy Johnson: Court grants Nollywood actress Angela Okorie bail over alleged cyberbullying

The Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday granted Nollywood actress Angela Okorie bail in the sum of N5 million, with one surety in like amount, over allegations of cyberbullying fellow actress Mercy Johnson-Okojie.

Justice Emeka Nwite delivered the ruling after considering Okorie’s bail application filed by her counsel, Earnest Nwoye. Although the prosecution opposed the application, the judge held that there was no concrete evidence before the court to suggest that the defendant would abscond if granted bail.

“Bail is at the discretion of the court and must be exercised judicially and judiciously. In the interest of justice, I am inclined to grant the application,” Justice Nwite ruled.

The court ordered that the surety must be a Level 13 civil servant who is required to depose to an affidavit of means and present an appointment letter as well as evidence of the last promotion.

Justice Nwite further directed that both Okorie and her surety submit two passport photographs each to the court registrar. The residence of the surety is also to be verified by the registrar.

The judge adjourned the matter until March 23 for the commencement of trial and ordered that Okorie be remanded at the Suleja Correctional Centre pending the perfection of her bail conditions.
