Copa del Rey: Nigerian Ademola Lookman Shines as Atletico Madrid crush Barcelona 4-0

0

Atletico Madrid surged into a commanding position in their Copa del Rey semi-final after a dominant 4-0 victory over Barcelona in the first leg on Thursday night.

Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman was central to the rout, scoring once and providing an assist as the hosts overwhelmed the Catalans in front of their home supporters.

Lookman, who opened his Atletico scoring account during a 5-0 quarter-final win over Real Betis, continued his fine form on the big stage.

The breakthrough came via an Eric Garcia own goal, setting the tone for a one-sided contest. A composed finish from Antoine Griezmann doubled the lead before Lookman struck to make it 3-0.

The Nigerian winger then turned provider, teeing up Julian Alvarez to cap a memorable night for Diego Simeone’s side.

The return leg is scheduled for March 3 at the Camp Nou.

In the other semi-final first leg played on Wednesday, Real Sociedad edged Athletic Bilbao 1-0 away from home.

EPL Table: Arsenal fail to secure win against Brentford as lead cut to four points

0

Arsenal’s advantage at the top of the Premier League standings was reduced to four points on Thursday night after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Brentford.

The Gunners went into the match aware that Manchester City had narrowed the gap with a dominant 3-0 victory over Fulham a day earlier, increasing the pressure on Mikel Arteta’s side.

It turned out to be a difficult outing for Arsenal at the Gtech Community Stadium, where they struggled to assert themselves and failed to record a shot on target in the second half.

Noni Madueke gave Arsenal the lead shortly after the restart, heading in a cross delivered by Piero Hincapie. However, Brentford responded swiftly, with Keane Lewis-Potter equalizing for the hosts 10 minutes later.

Both teams pushed for a winner in an open and intense closing spell, but neither could find the decisive goal, as the match ended level and Arsenal settled for a point.

El-Rufai to appear before EFCC

0

Former Kaduna State Governor Malam Nasir El-Rufai is scheduled to appear before the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, February 16, 2026.

The development follows an incident last Thursday when security operatives allegedly attempted to arrest him at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, shortly after he arrived from Cairo, Egypt, aboard Egypt Air flight MS 877.

El-Rufai’s lawyer, Ubong Esop Akpan, disclosed that the EFCC invitation was delivered to his client’s residence in December 2025 while he was outside the country for medical treatment and rest.

According to the lawyer, El-Rufai’s legal team has remained in contact with the anti-graft agency and assured authorities of his readiness to honor the invitation upon his return to Nigeria.

Nigerian Newssphere reports that El-Rufai had earlier raised an alarm over an alleged attempt to arrest him on Thursday.

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has dissolved the State Executive Council, relieving all commissioners and special advisers of their duties.

The decision was announced on Thursday in a statement issued by the governor’s chief press secretary, Onwuka Nzeshi.

Following the dissolution, the governor directed all affected commissioners and special advisers to immediately hand over their responsibilities to the permanent secretaries or the most senior officers in their respective ministries.

Governor Fubara also expressed appreciation to the outgoing members of the Executive Council for their service to the state and wished them success in their future endeavors.

No reason was provided for the dissolution of the Executive Council.

2027: Fielding Atiku as presidential candidate will be hard to sell to Nigerians—Amaechi warns ADC

0

Former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi has warned that it could be difficult for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to secure widespread support in southern Nigeria if the party fields a presidential candidate from the North.

Amaechi advised the party to carefully consider regional sensitivities ahead of the next general election, noting that such factors could significantly influence voter behavior.

Speaking in Kano while responding to questions on whether he would support an ADC candidate, Amaechi said he was committed to backing whoever emerges as the party’s flagbearer. However, he stressed that strategic decisions were necessary to strengthen the party’s appeal and electoral chances.

“I will support whoever emerges,” he said, urging the ADC to “look around and find the best material that can convince Nigerians that things will begin to improve.”

According to Amaechi, the party must weigh three key considerations in selecting its presidential candidate: competence, age, and the prevailing balance of power in the country.

“First is capacity. Second is age. Third—and that is the final point—is to respect the unspoken rule about power that exists in the South,” he said.

He explained that acknowledging the current power dynamics would make it easier for politicians and voters in the South to align with the party.

“They should complete that process and then return power to the North. It makes it easier for people in the South to say they want to compete because the North has already said, ‘Finish all this,’” he added, referring to former Nigerian vice president Atiku Abubakar.

Amaechi cautioned that presenting a northern candidate at a time when many southerners believe power should remain in the South could weaken the ADC’s popularity in the region.

“If you choose someone from the North, I’m not saying we won’t campaign, but it will be difficult to persuade the South to give up power. People will ask the North, ‘Why is it that only when power comes to the South does it become a problem?’” he said.

Despite his concerns, the former Rivers State governor reiterated his commitment to party unity, pledging to support whoever wins the ADC presidential primary, regardless of regional origin.

“Whether the person is from the South or the North doesn’t matter to me; I will support whoever emerges,” Amaechi stated.

Amaechi, who has indicated interest in contesting the ADC presidential ticket, also promised that he would serve only one four-year term if elected, to allow power to return to the North.

It is understood that President Bola Tinubu of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is currently serving the first term of the informal power-sharing arrangement that allocates the presidency to the South from 2023 to 2031.

Meanwhile, the former vice president, Atiku Abubakar, in a recent visit to former military president Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida, said ADC does not have zoning in its constitution.

Trump: Kwankwaso has never been extremist—Shehu Sani counters US over sanctions

0

Former Senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, has urged United States lawmakers to conduct thorough research and verify their facts before advancing a bill targeting former Kano State governor, Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso.

Sani made the call in a statement posted on his verified X account on Thursday, reacting to reports that US lawmakers had introduced a bill against Fulani militias and Kwankwaso.

According to him, any group that takes up arms to kill or kidnap innocent people, under any guise, deserves to be designated a terrorist organization.

However, Sani stressed that Kwankwaso has never been an extremist, nor has he supported, condoned, or encouraged religious persecution, violence, or discrimination.

“The US lawmakers need to do deeper and broader research to get their facts right. Senator Kwankwaso has never been an extremist,” he said.

He added that Kwankwaso’s conduct while in public office is verifiable, noting also that in some instances, leaders of Miyetti Allah and Kautal Hore have themselves been victims of bandits and terrorists.

Sani cautioned that any bill with political, historical, and global implications should be based on meticulous, intelligent, and comprehensive research.

I was rejected for jobs because of my physique—Nollywood actor, Nkubi

0

Nigerian actor Victor Udochukwu Nwaogu, popularly known as Nkubi, has revealed that repeated job rejections due to his physique pushed him into pursuing a career in acting.

The movie star made the disclosure while discussing the stigma faced by little people on a recent episode of the One On One podcast, where he appeared alongside his wife.

Nkubi explained that he became fully aware of his reality after secondary school, when he began attending job interviews and was turned down for even minor roles that others easily secured.

“As a child, you don’t really understand your reality, but you know you’re different from regular people,” he said. “The reality of being a little person hit me after secondary school, when I couldn’t get small jobs like others.”

According to him, the discrimination he experienced played a major role in his decision to embrace acting, a field where he eventually found acceptance and success.

Nkubi also expressed concern that his daughter is already facing similar stigmatization, as internet trolls make derogatory comments about her size because of his condition.

He noted, however, that he and his wife were aware of the possibility of having a child with dwarfism and had emotionally prepared themselves for it.

His wife added that although they anticipated such challenges, it is still painful to see their child being bullied online without provocation. She also revealed that a doctor once advised her to get pregnant again to avoid giving birth to a child with dwarfism, but she rejected the suggestion.

Delta Govt bans Valentine’s Day celebrations

0

The Delta State Government has prohibited the celebration of Valentine’s Day in all public and private schools across the state.

The directive was contained in a circular issued by the Ministry of Secondary Education and signed by the Commissioner, Dr. Kingsley Nze Ashibogwu, JP.

Addressed to chief inspectors of education, basic and secondary education field officers, and heads of schools, the circular—dated February 11, 2026—is titled “Abolition of Valentine Parties in Schools.”

According to the ministry, the widespread practice of organizing Valentine parties by students and teachers has not contributed to academic excellence. The government noted that students should instead channel their time and energy toward positive teaching and learning activities.

The circular further stated that the state government is prioritizing efforts to strengthen educational standards and discourage activities capable of undermining students’ moral and academic development.

Consequently, school heads in both public and private institutions have been directed to desist from organizing or allowing Valentine celebrations within school premises.

Colombia Declares State of Emergency

0

Colombia has declared a state of emergency following devastating floods in the country’s northern cattle region that have killed at least 18 people and displaced thousands of residents.

Authorities said surging waters from an overflowing dam and swollen rivers submerged communities in Córdoba, one of the worst-affected departments, leaving more than 150,000 people impacted.

The flooding has destroyed over 4,300 homes and submerged extensive farmland and grazing areas. Colombia’s cattle ranchers’ association reported that no fewer than 1,200 cattle were lost in the disaster.

Initial figures from the national disaster relief agency had put the death toll at 22, but the number was later revised downward to 18.

President Gustavo Petro signed the emergency decree on Wednesday, granting the federal government special powers for 30 days to respond swiftly. Under the order, funds and resources can be deployed to affected regions without seeking approval from Congress.

Authorities remain on high alert as heavy rainfall continues across northern Colombia, heightening fears of further flooding and additional displacement.

Abuja–Kaduna–Kano road: Nigerian Minister Umahi gives condition to resign after clash with Oshiomhole

0

The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has pledged to resign from office if the ongoing Abuja–Kaduna–Kano Road project is found to be substandard after quality testing.

Umahi made the declaration on Wednesday while defending the ministry’s budget before a joint session of the National Assembly, stating that he is open to independent assessment of the project.

During the session, lawmakers raised concerns over the award of a section of the road project to a firm they described as relatively unknown and previously linked to generator sales.

Senator Adams Oshiomhole, representing Edo North, questioned why the contract was reassigned from a well-established construction company to another firm whose track record in road construction, he said, was unclear.

In response, Umahi played down the concerns, stressing that attention should be on the standard of work being delivered rather than the background of the contractor. He maintained that the quality of the Abuja–Kaduna section meets required specifications and invited lawmakers to conduct an on-site inspection with independent concrete testing equipment.

The minister insisted that he would relinquish his position if any test proves the road construction failed to meet quality standards.
