The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has pledged to resign from office if the ongoing Abuja–Kaduna–Kano Road project is found to be substandard after quality testing.
Umahi made the declaration on Wednesday while defending the ministry’s budget before a joint session of the National Assembly, stating that he is open to independent assessment of the project.
During the session, lawmakers raised concerns over the award of a section of the road project to a firm they described as relatively unknown and previously linked to generator sales.
Senator Adams Oshiomhole, representing Edo North, questioned why the contract was reassigned from a well-established construction company to another firm whose track record in road construction, he said, was unclear.
In response, Umahi played down the concerns, stressing that attention should be on the standard of work being delivered rather than the background of the contractor. He maintained that the quality of the Abuja–Kaduna section meets required specifications and invited lawmakers to conduct an on-site inspection with independent concrete testing equipment.
The minister insisted that he would relinquish his position if any test proves the road construction failed to meet quality standards.
