Delta Govt bans Valentine’s Day celebrations

The Delta State Government has prohibited the celebration of Valentine’s Day in all public and private schools across the state.

The directive was contained in a circular issued by the Ministry of Secondary Education and signed by the Commissioner, Dr. Kingsley Nze Ashibogwu, JP.

Addressed to chief inspectors of education, basic and secondary education field officers, and heads of schools, the circular—dated February 11, 2026—is titled “Abolition of Valentine Parties in Schools.”

According to the ministry, the widespread practice of organizing Valentine parties by students and teachers has not contributed to academic excellence. The government noted that students should instead channel their time and energy toward positive teaching and learning activities.

The circular further stated that the state government is prioritizing efforts to strengthen educational standards and discourage activities capable of undermining students’ moral and academic development.

Consequently, school heads in both public and private institutions have been directed to desist from organizing or allowing Valentine celebrations within school premises.
