0

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has nominated Mr. Taiwo Oyedele as the new Minister of State for Finance, replacing Dr. Doris Anite-Uzoka.

The development was disclosed on Tuesday in a statement by Bayo Onanuga, the president’s special adviser on information and strategy.

In a related move, Tinubu redeployed Anite-Uzoka to the Ministry of Budget and National Planning as Minister of State, marking her third ministerial assignment under the current administration.

In a letter addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, the president formally transmitted Oyedele’s nomination for confirmation by the Senate.

Before his nomination, Oyedele served as Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, where he led efforts to overhaul Nigeria’s tax framework.

A native of Ikaram in Akoko, Ondo State, the 50-year-old economist and accountant has more than two decades of professional experience in public policy and finance.

He holds a Higher National Diploma in Accountancy and Finance from Yaba College of Technology and a Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Accounting from Oxford Brookes University.

Oyedele has also completed executive education programs at the London School of Economics, Yale University, the Gordon Institute of Business Science, and the Harvard Kennedy School.

He spent 22 years at PwC, joining the firm in 2001 and rising to the positions of Fiscal Policy Partner and Africa Tax Leader.

Oyedele is currently a professor at Babcock University and also serves as a visiting scholar at Lagos Business School.

If confirmed by the Senate, he will assume office as Minister of State for Finance as the administration intensifies efforts to advance fiscal reforms and strengthen economic management.

Nigeria has a vibrant Pentecostal and charismatic Christian scene, where many prominent pastors are celebrated not only for their ministries but also for their long-lasting marriages, often presented as models of godly unions, mutual respect, and endurance.

These unions are often held up as positive examples in Nigerian Christian circles, especially when contrasted with rising divorce trends or calls for mutual devotion in relationships.

BREAKING: El-Rufai: DSS arrests Police, Immigration officers

0

Five security operatives have been arrested and are to be prosecuted over the February 12, 2026, security breach at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA), Abuja, in an incident authorities said involved former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai.

The arrests followed a joint investigation by the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), and the Federal Ministry of Aviation.

Those detained are ASP Ayuba Yakubu of the Nigeria Police Force, Murtala Inuwa of the DSS, Najeeb Murtala of the Immigration Service, and Aviation Security personnel Musa Adamu and Salihu Victor.

Investigators said the suspects allegedly confessed to receiving bribes in exchange for granting unauthorized access to restricted areas of the airport and for tampering with established security procedures. Authorities described the incident as a serious insider breach of critical national infrastructure.

The suspects have been handed over to the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) for prosecution.

Meanwhile, other Immigration and Customs officers who were found to have improperly used their official uniforms to aid unauthorized access but were not considered criminally culpable will face internal disciplinary action.

Authorities said the move underscores a zero-tolerance stance against internal compromise within Nigeria’s aviation security architecture.

ECOWAS, ICRC holds workshop on protection of civilians in peace support operations

By Olaniyi Ariyo, Abuja, Nigeria

As part of an effort to enhance civilian safety amid escalating regional conflicts, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) have stressed the need to develop a comprehensive Protection of Civilians (PoC) policy for peace support operations.

At the event titled “ICRC-ECOWAS Protection of Civilians Policy Workshop” in Abuja, Mr. James Matthews, ICRC Deputy Head of Delegation, emphasized the organization’s neutral, impartial role in safeguarding lives and dignity during armed conflicts and violence.

ECOWAS, ICRC holds workshop on protection of civilians in peace support operations

“Civilians bear the brunt of armed conflict and acts of violence, including terrorism, and the direct and indirect effects impact millions worldwide and last long after hostilities end,” Matthews stated.

Highlighting the ICRC’s long-standing support for translating International Humanitarian Law (IHL) obligations into actionable doctrines, policies, and training, he referenced successful collaborations, such as the African Union Guidelines on the Protection of Civilians, and praised ECOWAS’s commitment to IHL through its longstanding Plan of Action and partnership with the ICRC.

“The ICRC is pleased to facilitate this process, bringing our experience and expertise to support constructive discussions and operationally grounded solutions,” he added.

In his remarks, Mr. Joseph Ahoba, Head of the Small Arms Division of ECOWAS, who represented Dr. Cyriaque Agnekethom, Director of Peacekeeping and Regional Security, underscored the strategic necessity of civilian protection.

“Preventing harm to civilians is not only a legal obligation under international humanitarian and human rights law but also a strategic imperative. We must note the legitimacy, credibility, and effectiveness of missions depend largely on the trust and confidence of the population we are mandated to protect,” Dr. Agnekethom declared.

Dr. Agnekethom outlined the workshop’s ambitious scope: to produce a policy providing concrete guidance on operational planning, rules of engagement, training, civil-military coordination, monitoring, reporting, accountability, and command responsibility.

“The policy we seek to develop must go beyond broad principles and provide practical guidance that strengthens every phase of mission planning and execution,” he said.

He therefore expressed optimism that the outcome will reinforce ECOWAS’s regional peace and security architecture while upholding human dignity in challenging environments.

The workshop session brings together representatives from ECOWAS member states, the ECOWAS Commission, security experts, and ICRC delegates to draft practical guidelines that integrate international humanitarian law (IHL) into regional missions.

Dangote: NNPCL, others increase petrol pump price

0

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and several other filling stations have increased the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol.

According to a DAILY POST correspondent who monitored NNPCL retail outlets across Abuja on Tuesday, the price of petrol has risen to N960 per liter, up from N875 per liter sold on Monday.

The adjustment represents an N85 increase per liter by the state-owned oil company.

The new pricing has already taken effect at NNPCL stations along Kubwa Expressway, in Gwarimpa, Wuse Zone 6, Zone 4, and other parts of the capital city.

Other marketers have also followed suit. Empire and Ranoil Sharon filling stations have adjusted their pump prices to between N960 and N980 per liter.

Meanwhile, an outlet belonging to MRS Oil Nigeria Plc along Kubwa Expressway had yet to begin fuel sales as of the time of filing this report. However, a manager at one of MRS’s stations in Abuja, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told DAILY POST that the company would review its pump price upward following a gantry price increase by Dangote Refinery on Monday.

Recall that Nigerian Newssphere reports that fuel prices were expected to rise nationwide after Dangote Refinery increased its gantry price, citing a surge in global crude oil prices triggered by escalating hostilities in the Middle East.

Both the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria and the Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria confirmed that a fuel price hike would take effect from Tuesday.

Recall that Dangote Refinery raised its gantry petrol price to N874 per liter on Monday.

2027: Atiku’s governor opposes former VP, Northern presidency, backs Tinubu for presidency

0

Ahead of the 2027 presidential election, Umaru Fintiri, Governor of Adamawa State, has rejected calls for a northern presidency, insisting that the South should complete its eight-year tenure.

Nigerian Newssphere reports that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who is from Adamawa State, alongside other opposition figures, has indicated interest in challenging President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 election.

However, Fintiri, who recently defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), maintained that it remains the South’s turn to produce the president for another four years.

He also explained that his decision to support President Tinubu’s re-election was influenced by what he described as the PDP’s failure to present a candidate, noting that no party member has so far declared interest.

He said, “Nobody has come out to say he is contesting for presidency in PDP. I have not seen. Whether you like to hear it or not, there is no business of anybody in the North to contest for the presidency at the moment.

“It is the turn of the South. They should complete their eight years. If we are really serious about this country, then the presidency should rotate.”

2027: Nnamdi Kanu’s imprisonment will affect general election in Southeast—Ejimakor

0

Aloy Ejimakor, legal consultant to detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu, has said that the separatist’s continued incarceration remains a defining issue for the Igbo people and could significantly shape voting patterns in the forthcoming general elections.

In a statement posted on his verified X account, Ejimakor stressed that for the Igbo, Kanu’s case is paramount and will remain so “until sound justice is done.”

“For Ndigbo, Nnamdi Kanu is the main issue & will remain so until sound justice is done,” he wrote.

Ejimakor further argued that regardless of differing political opinions, Kanu’s detention would have electoral consequences, particularly in the Southeast.

“Whether you admit it or not, his incarceration will significantly affect the general elections, especially in the Southeast, where mighty politicians will fall or rise on account of it,” he stated.

The comments by Ejimakor add to ongoing debates about the political implications of Kanu’s imprisonment as the country prepares for another election cycle.

Nnamdi Kanu, who was sentenced to life imprisonment in November last year, is currently serving his jail term in Sokoto prison.

‘Our leader’—US mosques ignore Trump, honour death of Iranian ruler Khamenei

0

Two United States-based mosques have organized memorial events for Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, following reports that he was killed in a joint U.S.-Israeli military operation over the weekend.

The events were held at a mosque in Manassas, Virginia, and at the Islamic House of Wisdom in Dearborn Heights, Michigan. Both institutions have previously drawn scrutiny over alleged ties to Iran.

In Manassas, organizers distributed a flyer promoting a “Potluck Iftar” in honor of Khamenei during Ramadan. The flyer referred to the late Iranian leader as “our leader,” inviting members of the community to attend the commemorative gathering.

At the Michigan-based center, Imam Mohammad Ali Elahi addressed worshippers during a service, strongly criticizing the reported U.S. military action.

Describing the offensive as “evil,” Elahi questioned its justification and suggested it was conducted under false pretenses.

“You promised that America First, and now we ended up having Netanyahu first,” Elahi said in remarks delivered after news of the reported strike. He also challenged assertions about Iran’s nuclear program and characterized the operation as an “illegal war.”

Speakers at the Dearborn Heights gathering further cited statements from Iranian officials alleging that civilians were among those killed in the recent strikes.

As of press time, U.S. authorities had not publicly commented on the memorial events held at the two mosques.

Nigerian gets 19 Years prison sentence in US

0

A 40-year-old Nigerian, Leslie Mba, has been sentenced to 19 years in a United States federal prison for his role in a large-scale romance scam and business email compromise scheme that defrauded victims of more than $4 million.

Mba, who is not a U.S. citizen, was handed a 228-month prison term by Judge David Hittner of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas. He is also expected to face deportation proceedings upon completion of his sentence.

The conviction followed his guilty plea to conspiracy to commit wire fraud and conspiracy to make false statements in immigration documents. The sentencing was announced on Monday by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Texas.

According to prosecutors, Mba operated between April 2018 and December 2023 as part of an international fraud ring that targeted individuals and businesses through online romance scams and compromised corporate email accounts.

Investigators revealed that members of the network unlawfully accessed company email systems, intercepted legitimate financial communications, and diverted payments intended for genuine vendors into bank accounts controlled by the conspirators in the United States.

Victims were led to believe they were paying legitimate business partners, only for their funds to be redirected to accounts linked to Mba and his associates. Authorities said Mba played a key role by opening and managing bank accounts used to receive and transfer the illicit proceeds, effectively serving as a money mule. Total losses from the scheme exceeded $4 million.

Commenting on the case, U.S. Attorney Nicholas Ganjei described romance scams as particularly disturbing crimes.

“Romance scams are among the most reprehensible forms of fraud because they prey on the lonely and vulnerable, particularly elderly victims,” Ganjei said, adding that Mba and his co-conspirators also attempted to remain in the U.S. by deceiving immigration authorities.

The scheme was also condemned by Jason Hudson, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Houston, who noted that such scams exploit trust and leave victims financially and emotionally devastated. He pledged that law enforcement agencies would continue to pursue those responsible.

Court documents further showed that after an immigration application was denied and he was ordered to leave the country, Mba allegedly sought to secure permanent residency through multiple sham marriages.

Four other Houston-based defendants — Grace Morisho, Rodgers Kadikilo, Kristin Smith, and Alexandra Golovko — had earlier pleaded guilty to their roles in the scheme. Morisho, Kadikilo and Smith received prison terms ranging from 15 to 25 months, while Golovko was sentenced to five years’ probation.

Mba remains in custody and will be transferred to a federal correctional facility designated by the Bureau of Prisons.
