I’ll only speak in Court—El-Rufai on ICPC probe

0

Former governor Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai has explained his decision to remain silent during questioning by the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC), stating that his action was based on his constitutional right and not an act of defiance.

El-Rufai, who is under investigation by the anti-graft agency, submitted two handwritten statements to ICPC officials on February 19 and 20, 2026. The statements were made under caution and in the presence of his lawyer, Ubong E. Akpan.

In the documents, the former governor described the investigation as politically motivated and maintained that he would only respond to any allegations before a court of law.

He argued that after nearly two years of investigation, the commission should present its findings before a judicial tribunal rather than continue to question him.

In his first statement dated February 19, he wrote in full:

“I have read the above cautionary statement, and I understand its meaning and implication. I wish to voluntarily state, in the presence of my lawyer, Ubong Akpan, Esq., from the chambers of Ubong Akpan. My name is Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai. I was born in Dandawa, Katsina State, in 1960, and grew up mostly in Kaduna State.

“I attended school in Kaduna and went to Ahmadu Bello University for my first degree in quantity surveying. I also attended Harvard University and the University of London, among others. I studied business administration, public administration and law, and public administration and law.

“My working career spans quantity surveying consulting, mobile telecommunications, and public service. I was Director General of the Bureau of Public Enterprises (1999–2003), Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (2003–2007), and twice-elected Governor of Kaduna State (2015–2023). I am retired and live mostly in Egypt with half of my family and my 96-year-old mother.

“I am a leading member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), the only surviving opposition party in Nigeria, which is the real reason you are investigating me.

“In response to your question (and indeed all your questions), I have, on the advice of counsel, decided to exercise my right to silence. I will make no further statement or respond to any question. I believe that after nearly two years of intensive investigation, the ICPC should present its findings to a judicial tribunal and not to me. I will respond to any allegations in a court of law only.

“This is because I do not believe these investigations amount to lawful entitlement, as in political persecution, which only a judge can decide upon. Thank you.”

In a follow-up statement dated February 20, 2026, El-Rufai reiterated his stance after investigators presented additional documents.

He wrote:

“In furtherance to my statement dated 19 February, 2026, and in the presence of my lawyer, Ubong E. Akpan, I wish to state further that upon presentation of further documents and questions, I reserve my constitutional right to silence to all the documents and further questions. As clearly stated in my statement dated 19 February 2026, I will respond to these documents and questions only when presented in a court of law.”

The former governor further alleged that his position as a leading member of the African Democratic Congress made him a target of political pressure, describing the party as the only surviving opposition force in the country.

Meanwhile, the ICPC had earlier obtained a 14-day remand order from a Chief Magistrate Court in Bwari, which is due to expire on March 5, 2026.

El-Rufai is expected to regain his freedom on Thursday if no formal charges are filed before the remand order lapses.

Iran announces postponement of Khamenei’s funeral, gives reason

0

Iran has postponed the state funeral of former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, citing expectations of an unprecedented turnout, state television reported on Wednesday.

The farewell ceremony, which had been scheduled for Wednesday evening in Tehran, was cancelled just hours before it was due to begin. Authorities said a new date for the event would be announced later.

Khamenei, 86, was reportedly killed over the weekend during joint US-Israeli strikes targeting key military and government installations in Tehran, marking a significant escalation in regional tensions.

Earlier on Wednesday, Iranian officials had indicated that a tribute ceremony would be held in the capital before his body would be transported to the holy city of Mashhad, his birthplace, for burial.

However, organisers later confirmed the postponement, pointing to the anticipated participation of millions of mourners and the need to put in place adequate infrastructure to manage the crowd.

Mohsen Mahmoudi, head of Tehran’s Islamic Development Coordination Council, which is coordinating the funeral arrangements, said the delay was necessary to ensure proper planning for the expected large-scale attendance.

Tehran has been under sustained missile strikes since Saturday, February 28, 2026, with reported attacks on strategic military and government facilities.

Although officials did not directly link the postponement to the ongoing security situation, the capital remains on high alert amid continued tensions and strikes.

Iran: Israel eliminates IRGC head who attempted to assassinate Trump

Israel has announced the killing of Rahman Mokadam, the head of the special operations division of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

According to Israeli authorities, Mokadam was eliminated on Wednesday amid heightened tensions between the United States and Iran.

Reports indicate that Mokadam was allegedly linked to a foiled assassination attempt targeting US President Donald Trump on the eve of the 2024 presidential election.

The development comes as geopolitical strains between Washington and Tehran continue to escalate.

Biafra will be safe haven for persecuted Christians in Northern, Middlebelt Nigeria—BRGIE

0

The Biafra Republic Government in Exile said Biafra upon independence would be a safe haven for persecuted Christians in Northern and Middle Belt Nigeria.

The Prime Minister of BRGIE, Ogechukwu Nkere, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday.

This comes as BRGIE passed legislation titled “BRGIE Policy of Support for Persecuted Christians in Northern and Middle Belt Nigeria.”

According to the separatist group, Biafrans strongly supported the move that would grant automatic citizenship to persecuted Christians in Northern and Middle Belt Nigeria who sought refuge in Biafra upon independence.

He stated that the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, had initially nursed the policy but it has been codified by BRGIE.

“Biafra Republic Government in Exile Passes Legislation Establishing Alliance with Protection for Middle Belt and Northern Nigerian Christians.”

“On February 27, 2026, the Biafra Republic Government in Exile (BRGIE) officially adopted BRGIE Legislation Bill No. 02262026, titled “Official BRGIE Policy of Support for Persecuted Christians in Northern and Middle Belt Nigeria.” BRGIE Prime Minister Ogechukwu Nkere strongly supported the legislation and presided over the vote.

“This legislation establishes a formal policy under which BRGIE, upon the attainment of Biafran independence, will provide safe haven to Christians from Northern Nigeria who seek refuge in Biafra. The policy includes the granting of automatic Biafran citizenship to such individuals upon independence. While Mazi Nnamdi Kanu previously referenced this concept informally, BRGIE has now codified the principle into official policy and law. In a manner analogous to how Israel serves as a homeland and refuge for Jewish people worldwide, an independent Biafra would serve as a safe haven for Christians in West Africa.

“The legislation further articulates a policy of support for Christian communities in Nigeria’s Middle Belt through political engagement, humanitarian assistance, and lawful defensive cooperation. This framework envisions the development of strategic partnerships aimed at strengthening community self-defense capacity and countering extremist threats, including Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), in full compliance with international law and human rights standards.

“Through these policies, an independent Biafra would not only safeguard the security and sovereignty of its own citizens but also act as a stabilizing force and source of protection for vulnerable Christian populations in Northern Nigeria and the Middle Belt. BRGIE reassures international partners—including stakeholders within the United States government—that Biafran independence would contribute to regional security, humanitarian protection, and broader stability.

“BRGIE adopted this policy in light of advice and encouragement from senior U.S. officials. It is incumbent upon BRGIE to demonstrate seriousness of purpose and institutional preparedness by addressing the practical and humanitarian implications of a potential path toward independence.

“One of the principal concerns raised by certain U.S. officials relates to the fate of Christians who would remain in Northern Nigeria and the Middle Belt in the event of Biafran independence. This concern is legitimate. Should Biafra secede, the remainder of Nigeria could potentially evolve in a more Islamist direction, thereby increasing the vulnerability of Christians to marginalization, persecution, or even mass atrocities. By enacting this legislation and formalizing its policy of support for Middle Belt and Northern Nigerian Christians, BRGIE directly addresses these concerns.

“Supporters of Biafran self-determination, including Dr. Walid Phares, a former senior foreign policy adviser to President Trump, have encouraged Biafrans to collaborate with and support Christian communities in the Middle Belt and Northern Nigeria.

“Accordingly, it is imperative that the Biafra Republic Government in Exile formalize and implement a comprehensive policy framework that addresses these concerns and advances constructive, lawful, and humanitarian solutions for the protection and advancement of Christian populations in the region,” he stated.

Recall that US lawmaker Riley Moore barely a week ago presented a report on the persecution of Christians in Nigeria to President Donald Trump at the White House.

The lawmaker, alongside other members of the US delegation, had visited Nigeria on a fact-finding mission.

President Trump, after designating Nigeria as a country of concern over an alleged persecution of Christians, had ordered airstrikes against terrorists in Sokoto, Northern Nigeria, on December 26, 2026.

Naira extends depreciation against US dollar as pressure mounts on CBN

0

The Nigerian naira on Tuesday recorded further depreciation against the United States dollar at both the official and parallel foreign exchange markets, amid concerns over the response of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

Figures released by the apex bank showed that the naira weakened to N1,384.29 per dollar on Tuesday, compared to N1,378.0246 traded on Monday, representing a day-on-day decline of N6.26.

At the parallel market, commonly referred to as the black market, the local currency also fell by N10 to close at N1,390 per dollar, down from N1,380 exchanged the previous day.

The gap between the official and parallel market rates stood at N5.71 per dollar as of Tuesday.

The sustained depreciation marks more than a week of consistent losses for the naira, following recent moves by the central bank to mop up dollar liquidity from the foreign exchange market.

The development comes despite Nigeria’s external reserves maintaining an upward trend, rising to $49.69 billion as of February 27, 2026.

Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday nominated Taiwo Oyedele, former chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee, as Minister of State for Finance. The ministry is currently overseen by the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun.

Sit-at-Home: Anambra cuts workers’ salary

The Anambra State Government has commenced salary deductions for civil servants who failed to report for duty on Mondays, in line with its earlier directive aimed at ending compliance with the sit-at-home order previously declared by separatist groups.

The state government had in January introduced a pro-rata salary payment system, warning that workers who stayed away from work on Mondays would have their wages adjusted accordingly. Governor Charles Soludo had also declared that the era of sit-at-home protests in the state was over, urging residents to resume normal activities.

However, discontent trailed the implementation of the policy on Monday as many civil servants expressed shock over substantial deductions from their February salaries after receiving bank alerts.

At the Jerome Udoji State Secretariat in Awka, several workers complained that the deductions did not correspond with the number of Mondays they were absent.

One civil servant, who requested anonymity, alleged that a colleague in his ministry received only N100 as February salary after deductions. Another staff member from the Ministry of Information reportedly earned just N3,500 out of his regular monthly salary of over N80,000.

According to him, some workers who missed work once or twice also experienced significant salary cuts, raising concerns about possible errors in the computation process.

When contacted, the Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, confirmed that the deductions were deliberate sanctions for failing to report to work on Mondays.

He explained that workers were required to clock in and clock out on Mondays as proof of attendance.

“If you came to work on Monday but failed to clock in and out, it would be assumed that you were absent because there is no evidence to show you were at work,” Mefor stated.

BREAKING: Iran: Nigerian Govt suspends pilgrimage

President Tinbu

The Federal Government, through the Nigerian Christian Pilgrim Commission (NCPC), has announced the immediate suspension of all pilgrimages to Israel following rising security tensions in the Middle East.

The Executive Secretary of the Commission, Stephen Adegbite, disclosed this on Tuesday in Lagos while addressing journalists shortly after 500 pilgrims returned to the Murtala Muhammed International Airport from the 2025 Main Pilgrimage.

The 2025 pilgrimage exercise commenced on December 29, 2025, with the inaugural flight departing from the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport. Over 4,000 Nigerian Christian pilgrims were successfully airlifted to the Holy Land without any recorded incident.

Adegbite noted that the Commission deployed a Boeing 777-300 aircraft with a seating capacity of 525 for the operation, describing it as the largest aircraft ever used for Christian pilgrimage airlift in Nigeria.

However, he explained that recent military developments in Israel and the broader Middle East have necessitated the suspension of further pilgrimage activities.

“You are aware of the latest security developments in Israel and the wider Middle East.

“In view of the state of emergency declared by Israeli authorities and restrictions on public gatherings, the Commission has decided to put on hold all pilgrimages both by the Commission and private operators until the security situation normalizes,” he said.

He stressed that the safety and welfare of Nigerian pilgrims remain the Commission’s top priority, adding that the situation is being closely monitored.

Adegbite also cautioned Nigerians against engaging in protests or actions that could heighten tensions linked to the crisis.

According to him, the suspension will remain in place until international travel to Israel is considered safe.

“The federal government places a premium on peace and security. We therefore advise Nigerians to exercise restraint and avoid actions that could undermine national security or diplomatic relations,” he added.

This comes as war between Iran and Israel-United States leaves the Middle East in flames in the past four days.

US: There’s grave danger in Aso Rock—Primate Ayodele warns Tinubu

0

The leader of the INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, Primate Elijah Ayodele, has cautioned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over what he described as looming danger within the Presidential Villa.

In a statement issued by his media aide, Osho Oluwatosin, Ayodele urged the President to exercise vigilance, claiming he foresees potential threats ahead.

The cleric warned that individuals working closely with the president could pose risks and advised him to tread carefully in his dealings.

“There is danger in the presidential villa. The president must be very careful of the people working closely with him.

“He needs to watch his steps carefully. I see danger ahead. I am warning as the spirit of God led me; this is not to scare anybody, but to caution the president.

“Nigeria must also be careful of external aggression; let the DSS and the security agencies be careful and be prepared.

“The military must also work tirelessly to prevent external interference. I don’t know where it is coming from, but they shouldn’t take it for granted,” he said.

Ayodele further called on the Chief of Defence Staff and other security agencies to remain on high alert to forestall any form of external aggression from forces allegedly opposed to Tinubu’s continued leadership.

Additionally, the cleric advised the president to exercise caution in his relationship with the United States government, warning that such ties may not yield positive outcomes for Nigeria.

“America isn’t your friend. Don’t be desperate about them; they are not ready to work with you. That is the truth. Some people are destroying your work, and you have not identified them. They are only deceiving you,” he added.

He urged the President to be mindful of agreements and commitments made to foreign partners to avoid consequences that could negatively impact both his administration and the country.
