You can’t stop Nigerian politicians from defecting—Peter Obi’s loyalist Sam Amadi blasts NDC

0

The director of the Abuja School of Social and Political Thoughts and loyalist of Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Sam Amadi, has said that the NDC’s anti-defection policy cannot legally prevent elected officials from leaving the party if their actions are protected by the Constitution.

Amadi made the assertion on Wednesday while speaking during a live interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time, where he reacted to the NDC’s newly introduced anti-defection policy.

The policy requires candidates seeking elective positions on the party’s platform to sign legal undertakings committing to relinquish their seats should they defect from the party after winning elections.

However, Amadi argued that the initiative attempts to address a political challenge through constitutional interpretation, a strategy he described as fundamentally flawed.

“The NDC cannot solve a political problem through constitutional interpretation. The NDC is trying to solve a political problem through a constitutional question, but that approach is flawed,” he said.

According to him, no political party can lawfully prevent members from defecting if they believe their actions are backed by constitutional provisions.

“It is not possible to lawfully exclude people from decamping if they believe their actions fall within the provisions of the constitution they signed,” Amadi stated.

He further explained that the Constitution already provides circumstances under which elected officials may legitimately switch political parties.

“If individuals choose to change political parties, they are allowed to do so, provided their reasons fall within the exceptions outlined in the constitution. In such cases, the law applies as provided,” he added.

The NDC recently unveiled the anti-defection policy as part of efforts to curb the growing trend of elected officials abandoning the parties on whose platforms they secured victory at the polls. However, Amadi maintained that constitutional safeguards ultimately take precedence over party agreements.

NDC: Kenneth Okonkwo replies Peter Obi over N5bn defamation

0

A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Kenneth Okonkwo, has formally responded to the pre-action demand letter issued by former presidential candidate Peter Obi over alleged defamatory remarks made during a television interview.

Obi had, on June 9, threatened legal action and demanded N5 billion in damages after Okonkwo allegedly accused him of fraud during the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) primary election process.

However, in a response dated June 16, 2026, and signed by his legal representatives, Supreme God Chambers, Okonkwo dismissed the allegations of defamation, insisting that his comments were based on information supplied by an aggrieved aspirant.

According to the letter, Okonkwo maintained that he did not defame Obi during his appearance on Channels Television, explaining that he was merely presenting the grievances of his client, Obunike Ohaegbu, also known as Nwa Miss.

The legal team stated that Ohaegbu alleged he paid N10 million in an attempt to secure a ticket under the NDC, describing the transaction as part of what he claimed was a scheme allegedly orchestrated by Obi and the party leadership.

The response further accused Obi of violating Okonkwo’s privacy by publishing his personal phone number on social media instead of serving him directly with the legal notice.

Okonkwo’s lawyers argued that the action amounted to a serious breach of data privacy and exposed their client to online harassment, threats and targeted attacks.

They warned that legal action could be taken over the alleged disclosure of personal information.

The chamber also described Obi’s N5 billion demand as an attempt to intimidate and silence Okonkwo, claiming it was designed to distract him from speaking out on what he described as alleged political misconduct.

The exchange marks the latest escalation in the public fallout between Obi and Okonkwo, who were once political allies.

UK court acquits Nigeria’s ex-petroleum minister Alison-Madueke of all bribery charges

0

A United Kingdom court on Wednesday acquitted Nigeria’s former minister of petroleum resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, of all bribery charges.

After at least 46 hours of deliberations, jurors at Southwark Crown Court found her not guilty on all six counts, Reuters reported.

The court’s decision on Wednesday brings to a close one of the most closely watched international corruption cases involving a former Nigerian public official.

Recall that British prosecutors had dragged Alison-Madueke to London over five counts of accepting bribes and one count of conspiracy to commit bribery.

Prosecutors alleged that Mrs. Alison-Madueke received lavish benefits and enjoyed what they described as “a life of luxury” in London, funded by oil and gas industry figures seeking favorable treatment and lucrative contracts in Nigeria’s petroleum sector.

They argued that the benefits were provided in exchange for influence over government decisions and contract awards.

Alison-Madueke has repeatedly denied all the allegations.

She maintained throughout the trial that she neither accepted bribes nor exercised direct control over the award of government contracts.

US rapper Mystikal sentenced to 20 years in prison

0

Grammy-nominated American rapper Michael Lawrence Tyler, popularly known as Mystikal, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty in a rape case.

The 55-year-old musician was sentenced on Tuesday for raping a woman at his home in Louisiana in 2022.

Mystikal had in March entered a guilty plea to a reduced charge after prosecutors dropped the original first-degree rape charge, which carries a mandatory life sentence upon conviction.

Days before sentencing, the rapper sought to withdraw his guilty plea, claiming he made the decision while under “significant emotional distress” and “substantial pressure.” However, the court rejected the application.

During the sentencing hearing, the victim, whose identity was withheld, recounted the assault, alleging that Mystikal punched and choked her, pulled out her braids and forcibly raped her at his residence in Prairieville, Louisiana.

She urged the court to impose the maximum sentence available.

Responding to the victim’s statement, Mystikal reportedly told the court, “If I did that to you, I deserve the max sentence.”

The rapper has remained behind bars since his arrest in 2022.

Nigerian Newssphere reports that Mystikal had previously been sentenced to six years in prison in 2023 after pleading guilty to a sexual battery charge.

NCC begins review of mobile termination rates

EVC NCC, Aminu Maida

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has commenced a consultancy study for the determination of Mobile Termination Rates (MTR) in Nigeria, describing the exercise as a critical intervention aimed at aligning telecommunications regulation with evolving market realities.

Speaking at the Stakeholders’ Consultative Forum on the Determination of Mobile Termination Rates in Nigeria, the head of the Competition and Tariff Unit, Policy, Competition, and Economic Analysis Department of the NCC, said the exercise marked “another important milestone in our collective efforts to foster an inclusive, transparent, and dynamic telecommunications sector in Nigeria.”

The official said the forum was convened to formally engage stakeholders on the consultancy study and present its methodology, approach and timelines as the commission begins the data-gathering phase.

According to the NCC, the review extends beyond routine regulatory obligations.

“This exercise extends well beyond routine regulatory compliance; it constitutes a significant economic intervention intended to align our frameworks with the rapid pace of change in the telecoms sector,” the official said.

The commission noted that Nigeria’s current interconnection rate regime was established through the Interconnection Rate Determination issued on June 1, 2018, with a subsequent amendment to the Mobile International Termination Rate in September 2022.

It explained that since then, the telecommunications industry has witnessed significant changes, including rapid market expansion, deployment of 5G technology, the entry of Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs), and major shifts in macroeconomic conditions.

“The Nigerian telecommunications market has undergone considerable transformation, reflected in swift expansion, shifting market dynamics, the commercial deployment of advanced technologies such as 5G, and the emergence of new ecosystem players, including mobile virtual network operators,” the official stated.

The NCC also cited changes in exchange rate regimes and inflation as factors that have significantly altered the cost of providing telecommunications services in the country.

“For regulation to remain effective in a fast-moving market, our frameworks must evolve in step with it,” the official said, adding that the commission was acting in line with Section 108 of the Nigerian Communications Act 2003 to ensure tariffs remain “reasonable, cost-reflective, and non-discriminatory.”

The commission said the consultancy study is built around three core objectives: developing an updated cost model for national and international termination rates, reviewing retail price controls and asymmetry arrangements to protect consumers, and creating a sustainable framework for integrating emerging operators such as MVNOs into national networks.

The NCC emphasized that the success of the exercise would depend on the quality of information supplied by operators and other stakeholders.

“The success of this study depends entirely on the accuracy and completeness of the data that underpins it. It is worth reiterating that no regulatory cost model can be effective without relevant and credible input from operators,” the official said.

The commission disclosed that consultants from KPMG would work closely with stakeholders over the coming weeks through a data collection exercise to ensure the study is based on accurate industry data.

Calling for cooperation from industry players, the NCC urged operators to participate actively in the process.

“Let us approach this exercise as a shared commitment to building a resilient, competitive, and investment-friendly ecosystem that supports the long-term growth of our entire industry,” the official said.

The commission added that contributions from stakeholders would be documented and used to refine the study as it progresses toward the development of a new mobile termination rate framework for Nigeria.

LaLiga: We have enough evidence Barcelona bribed referees – Real Madrid tells UEFA

0

Real Madrid has formally written to the governing body of European football, the UEFA, claiming it possesses evidence that strengthens allegations that Barcelona made improper payments to referees in the long-running Negreira case.

The case centers on payments totaling more than €7.3 million made by Barcelona between 2001 and 2018 to companies linked to José María Enríquez Negreira, the former vice-president of Spain’s Technical Committee of Referees (CTA).

Barcelona has consistently maintained that the payments were for legitimate technical and refereeing consultancy services. However, Spanish prosecutors continue to investigate whether the transactions amounted to corruption and administrative misconduct.

In a letter sent to UEFA on Wednesday, Real Madrid argued that newly available evidence reinforces existing suspicions regarding the payments and their purpose.

The club said it had informed UEFA of “the existence of relevant evidence that conclusively reinforces the indications already known from the beginning about the existence of long-term payments, opaque and lacking any verifiable justification.”

According to Real Madrid, the evidence points to a long-running system of payments allegedly made through various corporate structures without transparent or verifiable justification.

The Spanish giants further warned that the alleged conduct represents “a systemic risk of maximum gravity for the integrity of competitions,” adding that it “evidences the existence of a structure of undue influence on the arbitration system, incompatible with the essential principles of competitive equality, neutrality, impartiality and unpredictability of the sports result.”

Real Madrid urged UEFA to immediately revive disciplinary proceedings linked to the case, insisting that “it is unacceptable that this situation has been prolonged over time, since its persistence seriously compromises the credibility of football, its institutions and its leaders.”

The club also called for “a firm, exemplary and immediate response in the sports field, independent of the future of the ongoing judicial proceedings.”

In the letter, Madrid requested that UEFA use its independent authority to take disciplinary action where necessary.

“Therefore, our club asks UEFA, in the exercise of its own, autonomous and independent competence, to adopt the disciplinary and restorative measures that are appropriate in order to guarantee the integrity, transparency and proper functioning of the competitions,” the letter stated.

While stressing that it was not attempting to replace the role of state courts or prejudge any criminal ruling, Real Madrid confirmed it would continue participating in the ongoing legal process.

“Real Madrid, in person in the ongoing criminal proceedings as a private accusation, will exercise, as it has been doing since its inception, the actions that correspond at each procedural moment,” the club said.

The letter concluded with a pledge by the club to continue defending the integrity of football.

“Real Madrid reaffirms its commitment to the defense of the essential values of sport and will continue to promote as many actions as necessary to ensure that events of this nature do not go unpunished,” the statement added.

2027: Nigerian singer Brymo rejects Tinubu’s re-election bid, backs Peter Obi for president

0

Nigerian singer Olawale Olofooro, popularly known as Brymo, has said the country should begin considering an Igbo president, stressing the need for national unity and reconciliation.

Brymo, who faced criticism during the 2023 presidential election campaign over remarks perceived as opposing an Igbo presidency, said Nigerians should move beyond past divisions and work towards a more united nation.

Speaking during an interview with Yanga FM Lagos, the singer argued that the time had come for the South-East to produce Nigeria’s president. However, he expressed concern that worsening insecurity in the region could undermine such aspirations.

According to him, insecurity has often been used by different groups across the country as a bargaining tool in the struggle for political power.

“I think it is high time for an Igbo presidency. It is time for Nigeria to start considering an Igbo presidency. Let’s let go of the past, reconcile our differences and unite as a nation,” he said.

Brymo further claimed that political ambitions in Nigeria have frequently been accompanied by rising insecurity and militancy.

“Anytime any group in Nigeria wants the presidency, they start militancy. That is what is going on. If you want the presidency, start kidnapping and insecurity,” he stated.

The singer also praised President Bola Tinubu, saying he admired the president’s approach to regional security groups. Brymo claimed Tinubu did not allow the South-West security outfit, Amotekun, to evolve into a separatist movement.

“One of the reasons I like President Bola Tinubu is because he stopped Amotekun from taking off. Imagine if Yorubas had Amotekun active, South-East insecurity active, Boko Haram active, and South-South militants active. Do we still have a country?” he queried.

His comment was a direct endorsement for Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress, at the detriment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who is seeking re-election in 2027.

Lionel Messi made history on Wednesday after scoring a hat-trick in Argentina’s 3-0 victory over Algeria in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The three-goal performance marked Messi’s first-ever hat-trick in a World Cup match and saw him become the oldest player to achieve the feat in the tournament’s history.

In doing so, the Argentine captain surpassed the previous record held by Cristiano Ronaldo, who was 33 years and 122 days old when he scored a hat-trick against Spain at the 2018 World Cup.

Messi’s latest achievement came exactly 20 years after his World Cup debut against Serbia and Montenegro, a match in which he also found the back of the net.

The veteran forward’s three goals have also propelled him to the top of the race for the Golden Boot at the 2026 World Cup.

Messi’s outstanding display ensured Argentina began their campaign in impressive fashion with a comfortable victory over Algeria.

World Cup 2026: Mbappe scores brace, sets two records as France thrash Senegal 3-1

0

Kylian Mbappe scored twice as France defeated Senegal 3-1 in the FIFA World Cup opener on Tuesday in New York, United States.

Mbappe etched his name into French football history after scoring twice in France’s victory over Senegal.

The Real Madrid forward was kept quiet in the opening half but came alive after the break. Moments after being denied a penalty, Mbappe latched onto a pass from Michael Olise to give France the lead.

The strike saw him draw level with former France striker Olivier Giroud on 57 international goals.

France extended their advantage when Bradley Barcola came off the bench to score Les Bleus’ second goal. Senegal responded through Mbaye, who reduced the deficit and briefly raised hopes of a comeback.

However, Mbappe had the final word. The French captain capitalized on a loose ball and fired past Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy to seal the win.

His second goal of the match made him France’s outright all-time leading scorer. The strike was also his 14th World Cup goal, a record for a French player.

Mbappe’s World Cup tally now surpasses that of Lionel Messi, further cementing his status as one of the game’s greatest goalscorers.
