2027: Nigerian singer Brymo rejects Tinubu’s re-election bid, backs Peter Obi for president

Nigerian singer Olawale Olofooro, popularly known as Brymo, has said the country should begin considering an Igbo president, stressing the need for national unity and reconciliation.

Brymo, who faced criticism during the 2023 presidential election campaign over remarks perceived as opposing an Igbo presidency, said Nigerians should move beyond past divisions and work towards a more united nation.

Speaking during an interview with Yanga FM Lagos, the singer argued that the time had come for the South-East to produce Nigeria’s president. However, he expressed concern that worsening insecurity in the region could undermine such aspirations.

According to him, insecurity has often been used by different groups across the country as a bargaining tool in the struggle for political power.

“I think it is high time for an Igbo presidency. It is time for Nigeria to start considering an Igbo presidency. Let’s let go of the past, reconcile our differences and unite as a nation,” he said.

Brymo further claimed that political ambitions in Nigeria have frequently been accompanied by rising insecurity and militancy.

“Anytime any group in Nigeria wants the presidency, they start militancy. That is what is going on. If you want the presidency, start kidnapping and insecurity,” he stated.

The singer also praised President Bola Tinubu, saying he admired the president’s approach to regional security groups. Brymo claimed Tinubu did not allow the South-West security outfit, Amotekun, to evolve into a separatist movement.

“One of the reasons I like President Bola Tinubu is because he stopped Amotekun from taking off. Imagine if Yorubas had Amotekun active, South-East insecurity active, Boko Haram active, and South-South militants active. Do we still have a country?” he queried.

His comment was a direct endorsement for Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress, at the detriment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who is seeking re-election in 2027.
