Confusion as IPOB suspends Nnamdi Kanu as leader

There is confusion as the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has announced the suspension of the office of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, as well as the position of the director of Radio Biafra.

The decision followed a full-house meeting of the IPOB Directorate held on Wednesday, during which the leadership reviewed intelligence reports relating to communications allegedly originating from Kanu while in detention at Sokoto prison.

In a statement issued on Thursday and signed by Mazi Chikadibia Edoziem, Head of the Directorate of State (DOS), the group said the DOS would henceforth administer the affairs of the organization and oversee its activities.

The leadership stressed that IPOB was “formed and nurtured by a group of Biafrans in the diaspora (not by any single individual)” and maintained that no single person possesses the authority to dissolve the Directorate of State, which it described as the organization’s highest leadership structure.

According to the statement, the decision was taken after the leadership became “mindful that certain unguarded communications from Sokoto prison to those in Biafraland have caused unnecessary arrests and death of IPOB family members in Biafraland.”

The group also noted that Kanu’s visitors and activities were under close surveillance by the Department of State Services (DSS). It further expressed concern over an alleged plan by some individuals to establish a new militia, warning that such a move could spark another wave of violence in the region.

IPOB said the suspension was necessary to “prevent unchecked actions, reckless assumption of authority and unguarded utterances from resulting in the reckless arrests, torture and needless death of Biafran youths.”

The statement added that criminal acts carried out in the name of the suspended office would no longer be attributed to the organization, declaring that “IPOB shall henceforth not be held accountable for actions of individuals or groups of individuals not holding any active position within IPOB.”

The development comes a day after reports emerged that Kanu had dissolved the third administration of the Directorate of State.

Acting under his claimed authority, Kanu was reported to have inaugurated a fourth administration of the DOS and appointed United States-based Mazi Chris Nwaọgụ as the new Head of the Directorate of State.

A statement issued by IPOB spokesperson Emma Powerful said Nwaọgụ was mandated to immediately assume responsibility for the administration, coordination, and day-to-day management of the organization’s affairs under Kanu’s direct authority.

The Directorate of State was established by Kanu in 2012 as the administrative arm of IPOB. It has previously been headed by Dr. Justin Akujieze in the United States, Mazi Uchenna Asiegbu in Spain, and Chika Edoziem in Switzerland, who was appointed to lead the third administration in March 2017 during Kanu’s earlier detention at Kuje Prison.

Nnamdi Kanu’s comes barely months after he was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Nigerian government.

God’ll sustain Tinubu in power until 2031- Minister of Works Umahi

Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, has expressed confidence that President Bola Tinubu will continue to receive divine guidance to lead Nigeria until 2031, saying God will help the administration overcome the nation’s challenges and advance development.

Umahi made the remark on Thursday while inspecting ongoing bridge projects in Lagos State, including the Carter Bridge, which is scheduled for reconstruction from next week.

According to the minister, Tinubu’s government will continue to enjoy divine support in tackling critical national issues, particularly insecurity.

“The same God that brought him is going to be there to solve all the problems,” Umahi said, while urging Nigerians to support the administration’s efforts to address security challenges across the country.

He stressed that no leader wishes for instability during their tenure but noted that responsible leadership requires confronting challenges whenever they arise.

“There is no leader who will not want his reign to be peaceful, but when crises come, the leader must confront them. That is exactly what we are doing,” he said.

Umahi added that regardless of whether the country’s security problems are politically motivated, he believes Tinubu will be granted the wisdom and strength needed to resolve them and tackle other national concerns.

The minister also expressed optimism that all projects initiated by the current administration would be completed successfully.

“Your hands that have started this will complete it,” Umahi stated, maintaining that the government remains convinced that Tinubu’s leadership enjoys divine favour.

Speaking on the Carter Bridge reconstruction, Umahi disclosed that the project is expected to be completed within three years.

“It is within our five-year plan,” he added.

2026 World Cup: Ghana finally equals Nigeria’s Record

0

Ghana have equalled Nigeria’s record of six victories at the FIFA World Cup after edging Panama 1-0 in their opening Group L match.

The Black Stars became only the second African nation to reach the milestone, securing the achievement through a dramatic stoppage-time winner from Caleb Yirenkyi at Toronto Stadium, Canada.

Yirenkyi struck in the 95th minute, tapping home to seal all three points and deny Panama what would have been their first-ever point at a World Cup.

The victory leaves Ghana level on points with England at the top of Group L ahead of their next fixture on Tuesday.

Ghana have now recorded six wins from 16 World Cup matches, matching Nigeria’s tally of six victories from 21 games at the tournament.

Cameroon remain third among African nations on the list, having registered five wins in 26 World Cup matches.

2026 World Cup: Mexico become first nation to reach Round of 32

Mexico have become the first team to secure a place in the Round of 32 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after edging South Korea 1-0 in their second Group A match on Friday.

The co-hosts claimed all three points courtesy of a costly mistake by South Korean goalkeeper Seung-Gyu Kim.

Kim failed to deal with a header from Raul Jimenez, spilling the ball into the path of Luis Romo, who calmly lifted his effort over the stranded goalkeeper to score the game’s only goal.

While Kim’s error proved decisive, Mexico goalkeeper Raul Rangel delivered a match-winning performance at the other end, producing a brilliant double save to deny South Korean substitute Gue-Sung Cho.

The victory leaves Mexico as the only team with a perfect record after two matches at the tournament and puts them in a strong position to finish top of Group A.

Finishing as group winners would see Javier Aguirre’s side play their Round of 32 fixture in Mexico City.

2026 World Cup: Ivory Coast Striker Wahi Barred from entering Canada for Germany clash

0

Ivory Coast have suffered a major setback ahead of their second Group E match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after striker Elye Wahi was denied entry into Canada.

According to The Athletic, Canadian authorities refused Wahi a visa due to an ongoing investigation into alleged match-fixing, a matter that reportedly contravenes the country’s immigration regulations.

The Elephants are scheduled to face Germany in a crucial Group E encounter at the Toronto Stadium.

Ivory Coast began their World Cup campaign on a positive note, securing a 1-0 victory over Ecuador in their opening match.

Wahi’s visa rejection comes shortly after Canadian authorities also denied entry to Ghana midfielder Thomas Partey over sexual assault allegations involving the former Arsenal player.

As a result, Partey missed Ghana’s 1-0 victory against Panama earlier this week at the World Cup.

Outrage as petrol price remains high in Nigeria

0

Most filling stations across Nigeria have yet to lower their premium motor spirit (PMS) pump prices despite the recent decline in global crude oil prices and the reduction in Dangote Refinery’s ex-depot petrol price.

A market survey conducted in Abuja on Thursday showed that petrol was still selling between N1,317 and N1,336 per litre at several filling stations across the Federal Capital Territory and surrounding areas.

The survey found that outlets operated by AA Rano, MRS, NNPCL, Ranoil, Empire Energy and others had maintained their existing pump prices despite recent developments in the oil market.

DAILY POST reports that international crude oil benchmarks, including Brent and West Texas Intermediate (WTI), have fallen significantly to about $77 and $74 per barrel respectively, down from nearly $100 per barrel before the United States and Iran reached a peace agreement.

Following the drop in crude oil prices, Dangote Refinery announced a N75 reduction in its gantry petrol price, bringing the rate down to N1,175 per litre.

However, petroleum marketers are yet to reflect the reduction in their retail pump prices, leaving motorists paying higher rates at filling stations.

When contacted by DAILY POST, the President of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, IPMAN, Abubakar Maigandi, declined to comment on the issue, saying only: “We are in a meeting.”

Meanwhile, a manager at an MRS filling station in Abuja, who spoke on condition of anonymity, disclosed that the outlet was preparing to reduce its petrol price.

“We will likely reduce our petrol price by N75 either today (Thursday) or Friday. The new price will be N1,242 per litre, down from N1,317,” the manager told DAILY POST.

Similarly, an attendant at an AA Rano filling station in Abuja said customers had continued to express dissatisfaction over the current pump price of N1,330 per litre.

“Customers are complaining about the high price. I informed my employer, and they promised that the price would be reduced soon because people are angry,” the attendant said.

The development comes as Nigerians continue to battle elevated fuel costs. Petrol, diesel and other petroleum product prices have remained under pressure over the past three months amid market disruptions linked to tensions involving Iran, the United States and Israel.

She said the Ndigbo is not just phenomenal but demonstrates a shared commitment to advancing the lives of Ndigbo in the FCT.

Argentina captain, Lionel Messi has hailed Brazil legend Ronaldo Nazário as one of the greatest players in football history after surpassing his FIFA World Cup goal tally.

Messi achieved the feat after scoring a hat-trick in Argentina’s 3-0 victory over Algeria in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The three goals saw the 38-year-old Inter Miami forward move past Ronaldo’s World Cup scoring record of 15 goals and draw level with Germany great Miroslav Klose on 16 goals.

Reacting to the milestone, Messi said it was a privilege to be mentioned alongside some of the greatest players to have graced the tournament.

“It is a great honour to be able to compete with all these greats, including Ronaldo Nazario, among the players I have watched,” Messi said, according to Albiceleste Talk.

Reflecting on Ronaldo’s legacy, the Argentine captain expressed surprise that the former Inter Milan and Real Madrid striker was not at the top of the World Cup scoring charts.

“He was one of the greatest players of all time, and yet he is not in first place. So in the end, it’s just a statistic.”

Messi will now look to continue his impressive form and help Argentina secure another victory when they take on Austria in their next World Cup fixture.

Brazil football legend, Ronaldo Nazário has declared Lionel Messi the greatest footballer of all time, saying there should no longer be any debate over the Argentine’s place in history.

Ronaldo made the remarks after Messi delivered a stunning hat-trick in Argentina’s 3-0 victory over Algeria in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The three goals saw the Inter Miami star surpass Ronaldo’s scoring tally at the World Cup, further cementing his remarkable legacy in the competition.

“It’s time for the world to stop hiding and accept the fact that he is the best player of all time,” Ronaldo said.

“He continues to deliver every season and in the World Cup and, yet, there are still doubts about him. It is an unforgettable and historic night that will remain forever.”

You can’t stop Nigerian politicians from defecting—Peter Obi’s loyalist Sam Amadi blasts NDC

0

The director of the Abuja School of Social and Political Thoughts and loyalist of Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Sam Amadi, has said that the NDC’s anti-defection policy cannot legally prevent elected officials from leaving the party if their actions are protected by the Constitution.

Amadi made the assertion on Wednesday while speaking during a live interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time, where he reacted to the NDC’s newly introduced anti-defection policy.

The policy requires candidates seeking elective positions on the party’s platform to sign legal undertakings committing to relinquish their seats should they defect from the party after winning elections.

However, Amadi argued that the initiative attempts to address a political challenge through constitutional interpretation, a strategy he described as fundamentally flawed.

“The NDC cannot solve a political problem through constitutional interpretation. The NDC is trying to solve a political problem through a constitutional question, but that approach is flawed,” he said.

According to him, no political party can lawfully prevent members from defecting if they believe their actions are backed by constitutional provisions.

“It is not possible to lawfully exclude people from decamping if they believe their actions fall within the provisions of the constitution they signed,” Amadi stated.

He further explained that the Constitution already provides circumstances under which elected officials may legitimately switch political parties.

“If individuals choose to change political parties, they are allowed to do so, provided their reasons fall within the exceptions outlined in the constitution. In such cases, the law applies as provided,” he added.

The NDC recently unveiled the anti-defection policy as part of efforts to curb the growing trend of elected officials abandoning the parties on whose platforms they secured victory at the polls. However, Amadi maintained that constitutional safeguards ultimately take precedence over party agreements.
