World Cup 2026: Mbappe scores brace, sets two records as France thrash Senegal 3-1

Kylian Mbappe scored twice as France defeated Senegal 3-1 in the FIFA World Cup opener on Tuesday in New York, United States.

Mbappe etched his name into French football history after scoring twice in France’s victory over Senegal.

The Real Madrid forward was kept quiet in the opening half but came alive after the break. Moments after being denied a penalty, Mbappe latched onto a pass from Michael Olise to give France the lead.

The strike saw him draw level with former France striker Olivier Giroud on 57 international goals.

France extended their advantage when Bradley Barcola came off the bench to score Les Bleus’ second goal. Senegal responded through Mbaye, who reduced the deficit and briefly raised hopes of a comeback.

However, Mbappe had the final word. The French captain capitalized on a loose ball and fired past Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy to seal the win.

His second goal of the match made him France’s outright all-time leading scorer. The strike was also his 14th World Cup goal, a record for a French player.

Mbappe’s World Cup tally now surpasses that of Lionel Messi, further cementing his status as one of the game’s greatest goalscorers.
