Ayade stops 2022 Calabar Carnival, orders investigation into killings

0
Following the reported mayhem that erupted in Calabar where as many as ten persons were feared killed and over 20 injured, Governor Ben Ayade has ordered discontinuation of a segment of the Calabar Carnival.
The governor in a swift press statement signed by his media adviser and chief press secretary, Barrister Christian ita, has also ordered immediate investigation into the incident.
Part of the statement said,
“While sympathising with the victims of the accident and their families, the governor has ordered an immediate investigation to unravel how the motorist was able to get through security barricades to have access to the routes which were closed to the public.”
Ita said the Governor directed the immediate discontinuation of the Bikers parade in honour of the victims of the accident.
Governor Ayade while promising to ensure the culprit is arrested and brought to book,  however, sued for calm.
An errant motorist allegedly ploughed into a crowd that thronged the Carnival route to watch the bikers parade.
Ita said Governor Ayade is sad and devasted by the incident and has directed security agencies to apprehend the motorist who is on the run.

Daniel Omoyibo: Ode to an Exceptional Gem

0

In a time of uncertainty, the culture of avaritia amongst citizens banishes philanthropic gestures to acts of a distant memory, leaving the downtrodden with very faint hopes of assistance. However, there appears to be a glimpse of hope out of a dismally bleak situation.

Across Isokoland, though richly endowed with massive mineral deposits, is paradoxically laced with poverty, and its inhabitants were in dire need of a pillar of support until the emergence of Engineer Daniel Omoyibo, who is fondly called Danmotech, a philanthropist per excellence who has taken it upon himself to stamp out the
a wave of despair in the land.

The 53 -year -old is a business magnate with a conglomerate whose companies continue to be a model for indigenous brands in the oil and gas field through its deployment of cutting-edge technology to change the narrative and generate employment opportunities for the teeming youths.

His Foundation, Danmotech Foundation for the Less Privileged is a paragon initiative to demonstrate the ideals of selfless service to humankind by enrolling over a thousand disadvantaged students who may have missed out on WAEC examinations. Furthermore, market women are not left out with the doling out of palliative sums to the tune of N100,000 Naira to cushion the effects of staggering inflation, frustrating small businesses to a close.

Even as the festive approaches, he has distributed bags of rice to hundreds of households to ensure that the joy of Christmas is not lost to a lack of common essential edibles necessary for the celebrations.

Similarly, cash tokens have constantly been handed to an endless stream of visitors who throng his mansion to felicitate with him during this auspicious celebration of the birth of Christ, our Redeemer.
Engineer Daniel Omoyibo continues to outdo himself and has left many naysayers perplexed as they fruitlessly await the end of these charitable gestures.

Although he is not the only illustrious son in the whole of Isokoland, he exemplifies one with a big heart and is the most cheerful person throughout the land. It buttresses this claim: “Those who are the happiest are those who do the most for others “.

Banditry: CDS Irabor has shown what a coordinated Armed force can achieve- Alkali

0

The Chief of Defence Staff, General Lucky Irabor, has been commended for coordinating the Armed Forces’ operations in the country’s defence. This was stated in an interview granted to the media on the efforts of the security agencies in addressing the challenges confronting the country.

Dr Nasir Alkali , a security expert and an associate professor at the Kwararafa University in Wukari, Taraba state, stated that the Chief of Defence Staff, General Lucky Irabor, has displayed a grasp of issues concerning tackling the security issues in the country.

“I have watched the Armed Forces’ renewed efforts in handling the country’s security issues closely. We have observed that the Armed Forces have recently engaged in joint operations, which has yielded tangible results.”

“This is unlike in times past when leadership was missing in the Armed Forces operations. This affected the operational effectiveness of the security agencies in tackling the security threats in the country.”

Dr Alkali cited the example of banditry and how the security agencies missed the opportunity in the past to nip the threat in the bud due to a lack of collaboration.

“The issue of banditry ought to have been dealt with long ago. But again, we are aware of the situation where the security agencies acted in insolation with no collaboration . Its operations were politicized, allowing the bandits to advance and gather momentum.”

“I recall that I made mention of the need for collaboration between the Armed Forces and that the Chief of Defence Staff as the head of the Armed Forces is expected to drive this initiative towards achieving results. That didn’t happen in the previous era. However, I am glad that General Irabor took the initiative by rejigging the Armed Forces operations with an emphasis on collaboration. This is indeed the game changer.”

He also stated that recent events regarding how the Armed Forces operations have been coordinated and the various security threats in the country would soon be a thing of the past.

“We can see progress with the efforts of the Armed Forces in addressing the security challenges in the country. It is indeed common sense to state that two heads are better than one. This is exactly what is happening in the operations of the Armed Forces. There is synergy, there is cooperation, and there is a result. We must commend the Chief of Defence Staff for this.”

“I am not surprised with what General Irabor has done. He is a known strategist who commands tremendous respect from the Armed Forces even before he was appointed Chief of Defence Staff. I have had some interactions with him at seminars and conferences, and I was never at a time surprised that he would do exploits given the opportunity.”

“His style has always been about joint efforts. He canvassed this much while he was the commander of Operation Lafiya Dole, which saw the decimation of the Boko Haram group. As surprising as this might sound, he constantly sought ideas from academia. On one occasion, at one of the conferences organized by the Defence Headquarters, it was robust and intellectually engaging. The Chief of Defense Staff mesmerized all present with his position paper emphasizing the need for collaborations within the Armed Forces.”

When asked about the effectiveness of the Armed Forces in internal security operations across the county, he stated that the operations of the Armed Forces are notable and responsible for the gains in addressing issues such as kidnapping, separatist agitations and other security challenges.

“In some quarters, it has been advocated that the Armed Forces have no business in internal security operations. Of course, that is from a position of ignorance. The Armed Forces’ involvement in internal security operations has been commendable.”

“Those of us in the academia understand that without the military’s involvement, it would have been a horrible case in the country. We should encourage rather than criticize the military’s involvement in internal security operations.”

“We must understand that the military’s involvement in internal security operations has saved the country from disaster. I have always mentioned at various forums that the present security architecture implemented by the Chief of Defense Staff is robust. He has also provided purposeful leadership in ways too numerous to mention.”

Dr Alkali opined that with the recent coordination and efforts of the Armed Forces, the security challenges in the country would be reduced to the barest minimum.

“The indices are there for all to see, and I couldn’t agree less that there is a new vigour in the operations of the Armed Forces. The Chief of Defence Staff should not rest on his oars until victory is achieved.”

It would be recalled that there has been an improvement in the management of the security situation in the country with the renewed collaboration among the security agencies in the country.

NIMC said that information on all approved fees for other services is listed on its website.
The commission said it is aware of the antics of some unscrupulous individuals using its forged document to seek collaboration with state and local governments.

According to NIMC, these individuals do this to collect money to enrol and issue the NIN, especially for students in primary and secondary schools across the country.

The commission said it has not sent “anyone nor any organization to do so,” adding that the public should report such individuals or organizations doing so”.

Danbatta named NDLEA Ambassador

0

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), has named the Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, Professor Umar Danbatta as its Special Ambassador in its renewed war against narcotics and use of other dangerous substances leading to addiction in the country.

Commander for Narcotics at the NDLEA Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Muhammed Ajiya, who announced the Ambassadorial recognition by the agency during a courtesy visit to the Commission in Abuja last weekend, said the objective of the NDLEA’s visit was to partner with the Commission in order to reduce the number of drug addicts in the country through sensitization programmes.

He said one of the aims for this collaboration is to explore the use of telecom platforms to disseminate information about its activities to sensitize the citizens. He said this has become strategic as nearly all Nigerian youths are telecom subscribers who interface with telecom platforms from time to time. Ajiya said NCC comes readily to mind as a good partner to the NDLEA to achieve the latter’s mandate of reducing cases of drug addicts among the Nigerian youths.

“The NDLEA has rehabilitation centres across the country. This shows that we do not only apprehend the drug addicts, but we have rehabilitation centres where we monitor and guide them until they are fully rehabilitated” he said as he expressed appreciation that the NCC boss considered and accepted this role in the fight against drug addiction in Nigeria.

NCC’s Director, Human Capital and Administration, Usman Malah, who received the NDLEA’s delegation on behalf of the EVC of NCC, assured the visiting team of the Commission’s commitment to supporting the drug agency in eradicating drug abuse and sensitizing the citizens especially the young generation, majority of whom are telecoms consumers, on the effect of drug.

“Strategic collaboration and partnership is one of the key pillars of the two regulatory roadmaps of the Commission – the Strategic Management Plan (SMP) 2020-2024; and the Strategic Vision Implementation Plan (SVP) 2021-2025 – and we would convey the NDLEA’s message to the Commission’s management to see how we can explore the areas of collaboration being requested by your agency,” Malah said.

How insecurity in Abuja is driving up rents in Lugbe, Kubwa, other satellite towns

0

In 2022, the Federal Capital Territory experienced a spike in attacks from ‘bandits’ who have been targeting the suburbs. This year, terrorists launched a daring attack on the Kuje Correctional Facility and also attacked the Presidential Guards Brigade in Bwari.

In April, Hassan Shamidozhi, the traditional ruler of Bukpe community, Kwali Area Council, was kidnapped alongside two others. They were released 18 days after the family reportedly paid ransom.

It would be recalled that some lecturers of the University of Abuja were kidnapped by bandits.

Also, several countries also issued security alerts, warning their citizens of possible attacks against the federal capital. Although the city did not experience any major attack, however, in most satellite towns, there have been concerns.

Last week, some persons in Kubwa, another suburb of the FCT, were kidnapped by armed men who storms the area from the hillside. This attack appears not to have been a one-off, as residents in that environment stated that the hillside, close to some of the major quarries in the area, has become notorious for attacks.

The hill, located very close to Kukwa extension two, has become notorious for attacks, as residents informed Newssphere that bandits can easily cross the hills into Niger State.

“Across that hill, you can easily cross into Niger State. What we heard is that those armed men came from that rock side and carted away some persons,” Saidu Aliyu, a resident of the area told this reporter while pointing at the hill.

In some places around PW in Kubwa, residents and house owners have to pool resources together to get vigilantes due to the incessant attacks by armed robbers. According to residents, the attacks started with the stealing of batteries inside cars, and in no time, houses are being targeted.

“Initially, our fear is those Baban Bola (refuse collector), those guys can steal anything. Then we started experiencing the bursting of batteries out of cars. Before you wake up at night, batteries have been removed from cars. Then, the scary one was when they started breaking people’s doors and taking away their valuables,’ Mudasiru Sola, a resident at PW said.

“We had to save ourselves by contributing money to get security. Every house in this axis pays N5,000 per month to ensure safety,” Sola said.

Daily Post gathered that the insecurity in the FCT, has triggered mass movement from Kwali, Bwari, Kuje and others to places that are closer to the metropolis. This resultant migration has led to increase in rents in like Lugbe Dawaki, Kubwa and other places that are closer to the city centre.

Two years ago, to get a room and parlour apartment in Lugbe, a suburb of Abuja, one will need N350,000 on an average. Such an amount is considered an easy bargain considering the current cost of the same apartment in this same place.

Currently, to get any decent one-bedroom apartment, one must be prepared to part away with N600,000 per annum in addition, agents will demand 15% of the rent as agency and agreements, and there are also caution fees that go as high as N100,000 for apartment and some even demand service charge.

Because of the high demand for houses, there are other factors that determine getting a house. in some instances, 10-15 persons may be struggling for the same apartment, this situation gives agents and landlords the power to subject prospective tenants to stringent conditions.

When this reporter approached an agent in Lugbe, around the Federal Housing, the first question asked, “What state are you from? Are you Igbo?” when this reporter pretended to be Igbo, the countenance of the agent changed, he said, “this woman has said she is not giving Igbo House.”

The prejudice Lugbe is not just on ethnicity, some even discriminate against prospective tenants that are not working with the government. If you work with private a private organization, you are at disadvantage.

In some instances, agents ask prospective tenants to provide details of their workplace and annual salary before they are considered worthy to be given an apartment.

Discrimination against women

For women, the level of discrimination is at another level. Out of three houses that this reporter showed interest in, landlords expressed reservations against giving their houses to single ladies.

“I don’t give my house to girls. The last corper girl (NYSC Corps member) that I gave my house could not pat rent again after the first one expired,” a landlord had told this reporter when he pretended to be trying to rent a house for his sister.

For females who are from the Southeast geopolitical zone and also working in the private sector, the struggle to get decent accommodation, even when they have money is a tough battle.

Lugbe, Kubwa struggle with infrastructure

It would be recalled that Newssphere had reported that the National Assembly last week passed the budget of the federal capital territory of about N607 billion for 2022.

It is worth noting that the FCT budget has over the year increased considerably from N278.4 billion in 2020, which was later revised downward to N199.2 billion due to COVID-19.

In 2021, the budget was N329 billion and 2022 is N607 billion. Despite the increase in the budget, most of the satellite towns have been neglected in terms of infrastructure with most of the attention focused on the city centre.

Due to the high cost of rent in the city, most workers live in this satellite towns like Karu, Nyanyan, Mararaba, Jikowyi, Bwari, Dutse, Suleja, Madala, Zuba, Lugbe, Gwagwalada and even as far as Keffi.

But these towns get little to no attention from the administration. Even within the city, slums are growing. Jabi Village, Asokoro Village, Garki Village and other slums offer workers cheap accommodation, however, these places rarely get the attention of the administration.
