EPL: Guardiola explains why Manchester City was held to 3-3 draw by Everton

0

Manager Pep Guardiola has admitted that Manchester City struggled to cope with the physical approach of Everton in their 3-3 Premier League draw on Monday night.

City appeared in control early on after Jeremy Doku handed the visitors the lead in the first half. However, Everton responded strongly after the break, turning the game around with a spirited display.

Substitute Thierno Barry equalized before Jake O’Brien put the hosts ahead with a header. Barry then grabbed his second of the night to extend Everton’s advantage.

The city fought back late on, with Erling Haaland and Doku finding the net to rescue a point at the Hill Dickinson.

Reflecting on the match, Guardiola praised his side’s first-half performance but admitted they struggled after the interval.

“We played an outstanding first half. It was so difficult with their physicality,” Guardiola said.

“In the second half, they made a step up. We didn’t have as much control, and we gave away the goal. After that, they came back and made it a proper English game, so aggressive in the duels.

“But in general, we made a really good performance. Everton away is always difficult, and I give credit to them for their composure and aggression.”

2027: Why Kwankwaso, I dumped ADC for NDC—Peter Obi

0

Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has opened up on the reasons behind his decision to leave the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and join the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) alongside former Kano State governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

In a detailed statement shared on X on Monday, Obi said the move was not driven by anger, personal ambition, or political convenience, but by a renewed commitment to building a better Nigeria.

“Yesterday, I formally joined the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), alongside my dear brother, Engr. Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, with one clear purpose: to continue the struggle for a new Nigeria built on justice, competence, accountability, and compassion for the ordinary Nigerian,” he said.According to him, the decision followed careful reflection on the country’s current challenges and the urgent need to redirect its trajectory.

“As I stated yesterday, this decision was not made out of anger, personal ambition, or convenience. It came after deep reflection on the present condition of our nation and the urgent need to rescue Nigeria from the dangerous path it is currently heading,” Obi added.

Obi stressed that his political journey has always been about service to the people rather than personal gain.

“Politics should never be about individuals, positions, or personal gain. It must be about the people, especially the millions of Nigerians who today can no longer afford necessities, whose businesses are collapsing, whose children are losing hope, and whose future is becoming increasingly uncertain,” he stated.

Explaining his exit from the ADC, Obi alleged that persistent internal crises and legal battles were deliberately orchestrated to frustrate his participation, similar to his experience in the Labour Party.

“I left the ADC for the same reason I left the Labour Party: the severe, orchestrated litigation and internal crises deliberately designed to ensure that I, alongside many other notable individuals, do not effectively participate in the electoral process,” he said.

Despite his departure, Obi expressed gratitude to the ADC leadership, particularly the party’s chairman, Senator David Mark, as well as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, for their support.

“I sincerely appreciate and remain deeply grateful to the leadership of ADC for the opportunity to work together in pursuit of a better Nigeria. I am particularly grateful to ADC Chairman Senator David Mark for his exceptional leadership. I also deeply appreciate my leader and elder brother, YE Atiku Abubakar, as well as other respected leaders within the party,” he noted.

Obi also cautioned against what he described as the growing trend of weakening opposition parties through unresolved litigations and political interference.

“Democracy must never become a weapon against the people. A healthy democracy thrives on strong institutions, credible alternatives, and the freedom of citizens to make choices without intimidation, manipulation, or fear,” he warned.

Highlighting the current state of the nation, Obi said Nigeria is facing one of its most difficult periods.

“Nigeria today is passing through one of the most difficult periods in its history. Poverty is rising. Hunger is widespread. Insecurity continues to threaten lives and livelihoods. Businesses are shutting down daily,” he said.

Obi maintained that joining the NDC represents a continuation of his long-standing mission to promote responsible governance and national development.

“Our decision to join the NDC is therefore not an abandonment of values, but a continuation of the same mission we have always stood for: building a Nigeria where leadership is about service,” he added.

He urged Nigerians, especially youths and women, to remain hopeful despite the challenges.

“I urge you not to lose faith in Nigeria. Nations do not change because people surrender to hopelessness; they change because people continue to believe, continue to sacrifice, and continue to stand for what is right,” Obi said.

Chaos in NDC Congress in Enugu as thugs disrupt gathering after Obi, Kwankwaso’s defection

0

Suspected political thugs allegedly loyal to former Anambra State governor Peter Obi disrupted the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) state congress in Enugu on Monday, throwing the event into chaos.

The incident occurred at Aborigene Hall in Enugu, where party members had assembled for the scheduled congress before the venue was attacked.

The disruption comes less than 24 hours after Obi and former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso formally defected to the NDC. Both politicians were received into the party on Sunday in Abuja by its national leader, Seriake Dickson, alongside other party leaders and supporters.

Sources in Nigerian Newsphere say that tension began when a motion was raised to dissolve the party’s pro tempore State Working Committee. Shortly after, suspected thugs reportedly stormed the venue, pulled down banners, and ordered attendees to vacate the premises.

“They started by tearing down banners and forced everyone out. They only joined the party on Sunday after Obi defected, and now they want to take over the structure,” a visibly upset party member alleged.

Despite the disruption, the congress later resumed, with party officials announcing Dr. John Paul Anih as the new NDC State Chairman. Anih, a former Special Assistant on Youth Affairs to ex-Enugu State governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, emerged victorious at the rescheduled congress.

Negotiations for Biafra without BRGIE, US govt mediation void—Nkere declares

0

The Prime Minister of the Biafran Republic in Exile and separatist leader Ogechukwu Nkere has declared that negotiations for Biafran resettlement are void without the BRGIE and US government mediation.

He disclosed this in a statement to Nigerians issued on Monday.

Nkere stated that BRGIE will not accept any ‘negotiations’ or ‘settlement’ on the Biafra agitation if the US government and BRGIE are not involved.

According to him, BRGIE is the only Biafran political entity with high-level relations with the US government.

He further noted while BRGIE advocates for the release of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, he cannot negotiate for Biafra while in prison.

“The Biafra Republic Government in Exile (BRGIE) declares any Biafra settlement or negotiations null and void without BRGIE and US government mediation.

“The Biafra Republic Government in Exile (BRGIE), led by Prime Minister Ogechukwu Nkere, issues the following statement:

“BRGIE will not accept any ‘negotiations’ or ‘settlement’ on the Biafra issue if the US government and BRGIE are not involved.

“The Biafra Republic Government in Exile (BRGIE) is the only Biafran political entity with high-level relations with the US government. ” BRGIE has already openly offered the U.S. military bases in Biafra, as well as a variety of other items, which are being considered. “The Biafra independence movement is in a completely different stage, compared to when Mazi Nnamdi Kanu was illegally renditioned in 2021. “The Biafra matters have gone far beyond Biafra because of our international diplomacy.

“There is external interest, from the US as well as from certain unnamed third-party countries. Biafra is no longer simply an internal Nigerian matter but a matter of US national security and international interest. As such, given that the U.S. is “invested” in the Biafra matter in coordination with BRGIE, the U.S. must and will have decision-making on the future of Biafra and Nigeria. Any solution to the Biafra question, including our quest for independence, must involve US mediation and consultation. BRGIE will not speak directly with the government of Nigeria—there can only be communication through third parties, primarily the United States government.

“Furthermore, any attempt by the government of Nigeria to directly negotiate with other Biafran representatives without involving BRGIE and the US government will be blocked in a high-level and coordinated manner. BRGIE has assured the US government that it will protect US interests in Biafra.

“For example, should the Nigerian government attempt to ‘negotiate’ with Mazi Nnamdi Kanu in prison on Biafran matters, we will automatically reject any agreement reached.

“Free Biafrans cannot take orders from someone in prison, especially when they are imprisoned. It poses grave security risks.

“We have advocated for Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s release to the US government. However, even once Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is released, it will not be accepted by the parties involved if Mazi Nnamdi Kanu attempts to unilaterally ‘negotiate’ Biafra matters with the federal government of Nigeria. Rather, once released, BRGIE will invite Mazi Nnamdi Kanu to the United States, and we will privately brief Mazi Nnamdi Kanu in person and arrange for him to be briefed by US officials as well, who will explain to Mazi Nnamdi Kanu the realities of the situation and the role in which we envision for him.

“We advise Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, and those who are a part of his team, about the importance and benefit of him working in concert with BRGIE. For example, some of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s advisers conspicuously ignore BRGIE on their Twitter and social media, even posting about completely random and marginal Igbo and Biafran initiatives yet ignoring BRGIE’s prominence in Washington, DC.

“This type of behavior should be corrected. BRGIE welcomes direct dialogue with Mazi Nnamdi Kanu at any time to discuss the path forward,” he stated.

Exclusive: 2027: Heavy crisis hits NDC after Peter Obi, Kwankwaso’s defection

0

Barely hours after Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), signs of a looming leadership crisis have emerged within the opposition party ahead of 2027 general elections.

Nigerians Newssphere report that before Obi’s defection on Sunday, the NDC had scheduled its state congresses for May 4, 2026. However, party insiders now warn of possible parallel congresses, alleging that supporters of the new entrants are already attempting to take control of the party’s leadership structure.

A source within the party exclusively told Nigerian Newssphere that tensions are rising as the congresses commence. According to the source, the sudden influx of Obi and Kwankwaso loyalists is threatening internal stability. The source also accused the new members of creating avoidable conflicts that could later be blamed on external forces, including the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“The states’ congresses will begin today, but Peter Obi and Kwankwaso supporters want to hijack the process barely hours after joining the party. It is terrible. At the end of the day, they would blame President Tinubu for the internal crisis that they caused,” the source said.

Compounding the situation are earlier reports involving the party’s National Legal Adviser, Barrister Reuben Egwuaba, who is alleged to hold dual membership in both the NDC and the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), a violation under Nigeria’s revised electoral laws.

Obi had officially resigned from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Sunday, citing undue external influence, while Kwankwaso over the weekend directed his supporters to align with the NDC.

The defections have drawn mixed reactions across the political landscape. Former Bayelsa State governor Seriake Dickson welcomed the move, describing it as a boost for the party. In contrast, former Kaduna senator Shehu Sani argued that the development could ultimately favor President Tinubu’s chances of re-election in 2027.

Political observers note that the exit of Obi and Kwankwaso from the ADC has disrupted earlier efforts by opposition figures to form a united front against the ruling government. Key figures such as Atiku Abubakar, Nasir El-Rufai, and Rotimi Amaechi had, in March 2025, rallied around a coalition aimed at unseating Tinubu.

With the latest political realignments, that coalition appears fractured, leaving the opposition further divided as the 2027 elections draw closer. Since 2023, Obi and several other opposition leaders have switched political platforms multiple times, raising concerns about stability within Nigeria’s opposition bloc.

Peter Obi dumps ADC months after joining

0

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has resigned from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing emerging internal tensions and alleged infiltration by agents of the Nigerian state.

Obi announced his decision in a statement shared on his verified X handle on Sunday, expressing concern that the same forces he accused of destabilizing the Labour Party are now making inroads into the ADC.

The former Anambra State governor claimed these elements have introduced “endless court cases, internal battles, suspicion, and division,” diverting attention from critical national issues and undermining the party’s focus on service and nation-building.

He lamented what he described as a troubling societal reality in Nigeria, where humility is often seen as weakness, respect mistaken for lack of courage, and compassion regarded as foolishness.

Obi maintained that his political journey has been guided by service and sacrifice, stressing that he has never used his position or influence to oppress others or intimidate the vulnerable.

Clarifying his exit, he stated that his decision was not due to any personal اختلاف with key figures in the party, including ADC National Chairman David Mark or former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

He said, “Let me state clearly: my decision to leave the ADC is not because our highly respected chairman, Senator David Mark, treated me badly, nor because my leader and elder brother, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, or any other respected leaders did anything personally wrong to me. I will continue to respect them.”

Obi further stressed that he is not driven by personal ambition for political office but by a desire to see a better Nigeria.

“I am not desperate to be president, vice president, or Senate president. I am desperate to see a society that can console a grieving mother, a country where citizens are safe, and where people do not go to bed hungry,” he said.

Reflecting on the current state of the nation, Obi described Nigeria’s environment as increasingly toxic, marked by insecurity, intimidation, and systemic challenges that hinder genuine service and progress.

Despite his resignation, he expressed optimism that Nigeria can still achieve competent leadership rooted in justice, compassion, and equal opportunity

2027: They don’t have numbers- Amaechi reveals why he’s better than Atiku, Peter Obi

0

Former Minister of Transportation and chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Rotimi Amaechi, has ordered his supporters to stay away from social media clashes ahead of the party’s presidential primary.

Amaechi gave the directive during the ADC “Progressive Movement” meeting in Lagos, where he also took subtle swipes at supporters of Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar.

According to him, while rival camps continue to trade insults online, his loyalists have been instructed to maintain discipline and avoid engaging in digital confrontations.

“My supporters don’t engage in fights on social media. Have you seen any Amaechi supporter fighting online? It’s between Atiku people and Obi people. Obi supporters abuse me, but we will never reply,” he said.

He stressed that the restraint is not out of inability to respond but a deliberate strategy to maintain unity ahead of the contest.

“It’s not because we don’t know what to say or can’t reply. We choose peace. The Obidients say ‘Obi or nothing’—do they have the numbers? The Atiku camp says “Atiku or nothing”—do they also have the numbers?” he queried.

Amaechi added that his camp is focused on winning the ADC presidential ticket without creating divisions that could weaken the party.

“When you win, it becomes difficult to unite everyone if you’ve been attacking them. Because we believe we will win, we are not abusing anybody. We want to bring everyone together,” he said.

He further emphasized that his team remains under strict instructions to avoid any form of verbal attacks within the party.

“My team is under permanent instruction—don’t abuse anybody in ADC. I am careful with what I say,” he added.

Dangote Refinery crashes JetA1 price

0

Dangote Refinery has announced a reduction in the price of aviation fuel, JetA1, fixing it at N1,820 per liter in a move aimed at curbing soaring costs and stabilizing the market.

The 650,000-barrel-per-day refinery said the new price is designed to promote transparency and counter widespread speculation that had pushed projected prices above N3,000 per liter.

Airline operators in Nigeria have, in recent months, raised concerns over the sharp rise in JetA1 costs, which reportedly surged by nearly 300 percent following escalating tensions in the Middle East. The situation has been further aggravated by price speculation and the activities of middlemen in the supply chain.

However, the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority clarified that aviation fuel prices currently range between N1,960 and N2,800 per liter, dismissing claims of prices exceeding N3,000.

The development comes amid mounting pressure on airline operators, who had warned of possible shutdowns or fare hikes due to the high cost of fuel.

In a related move, the federal government recently approved a 30 percent discount on airline operators’ debt as part of efforts to prevent disruptions in the aviation

INEC finally recognizes David Mark-led ADC hours after Supreme Court judgment

0

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Thursday officially recognized David Mark as the National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The development was confirmed via an update on INEC’s portal seen by Nigerian Newssphere on Thursday.

The recognition follows a ruling by the Supreme Court of Nigeria, which set aside an earlier judgment of the Court of Appeal that had restrained the acknowledgment of Mark’s leadership of the party.

Earlier, on April 1, 2026, INEC had removed the names of David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola from its official portal as National Chairman and National Secretary of the ADC, respectively. The commission had also announced the suspension of recognition of all factions within the party and stated it would not monitor any conventions or congresses organized by groups linked to the affected leaders.

The latest update signals a shift in INEC’s position following the apex court’s decision, effectively restoring recognition of the party’s leadership under Mark.
