BREAKING: Court rejects Sowore’s Submission in DSS cyberbullying trial against Tinubu

Justice Mohammed Garba Umar of the Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed the no-case submission filed by activist Omoyele Sowore in the cyberbullying charges brought against him by the Department of State Services (DSS) over alleged comments about President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

In a ruling delivered on Friday, Justice Umar held that the DSS had established a prima facie case against Sowore and sufficiently linked him to the alleged offenses to warrant him entering a defense.

The court subsequently ordered Sowore to open his defense in the two-count charge filed against him.

The DSS had accused the activist of cyberbullying the president by allegedly referring to Tinubu as a “criminal” on his X (formerly Twitter) handle.

Sowore had earlier urged the court to discharge and acquit him, arguing in his no-case submission that the prosecution failed to establish evidence connecting him to the alleged offenses.

However, Justice Umar dismissed the application, ruling that the prosecution had presented enough evidence for the matter to proceed to the defense stage.

BREAKING: 2027: Goodluck Jonathan finally indicates interest to unseat Tinubu

0

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has hinted at a possible return to active politics ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Jonathan made the remark on Thursday in Abuja after a group of supporters visited his residence and urged him to contest the next presidential election.

Responding to the calls, the former president said the presidential race was a serious national issue and not something to be taken lightly.

“The presidential race is not a computer game, but I heard you, and I will consult widely. But the most important thing is that young people will have a Nigeria that will plan for our grandchildren,” he said.

The development has further fuelled speculation about Jonathan’s possible participation in the 2027.

Nigerian Newssphere reports that president Bola Ahmed Tinubu had indicated interest to seek re-election under ruling All Progressives Congress.

Nigerian music star Davido has revealed that he is taking an indefinite break from making music.

The award-winning singer made the announcement during a recent livestream with content creator Davrel, where he urged fans to stop asking about new releases.

According to the “OBO” crooner, he is currently on a musical sabbatical and does not feel pressured to release fresh songs to remain relevant in the industry.

Naira records significant appreciation against US dollar today, May 6

0

The Naira recorded a notable appreciation against the US dollar at the official foreign exchange market on Wednesday, reversing its previous day’s decline.

Data released by the Central Bank of Nigeria showed the local currency strengthened to N1,357.34 per dollar, compared to N1,366.56 on Tuesday. This reflects a day-on-day gain of N9.22.

At the parallel market, however, the Naira traded flat, maintaining the same rate of N1,395 per dollar recorded a day earlier.

The currency’s improvement at the official window comes despite continued pressure on Nigeria’s external reserves, which fell to $48.33 billion as of May 5, 2026.

The latest development follows a depreciation recorded on Tuesday after the Naira had opened the week on a positive trajectory at the official market.

Champions League: PSG eliminates Bayern, clash with Arsenal in final

0

Paris Saint-Germain have booked their place in this season’s UEFA Champions League final after edging Bayern Munich on aggregate.

The Ligue 1 champions secured qualification following a 1-1 draw in the second leg at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday night, progressing after last week’s high-scoring first encounter.

Contrary to expectations of another goal-fest after the 5-4 thriller in the first leg, the return fixture was a closely contested affair.

PSG struck early through Ousmane Dembele, who converted Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s low cross inside the opening five minutes, putting the visitors in control.

Bayern Munich responded late on, with Harry Kane finding the equalizer in the closing stages, but the goal proved insufficient to overturn the aggregate deficit.

The result sees PSG, the defending champions, advance to the final, where they will face Arsenal.

The Premier League side sealed their spot after a 2-1 aggregate victory over Atletico Madrid, reaching the Champions League final for the first time in two decades.

Both teams will now meet in Budapest on May 30 for the title decider.

Dangote increases petrol price for the second time in seven days

0

Dangote Refinery on Wednesday increased its gantry petrol price for the second time in seven days.

Checks by Nigerian Newssphere on Petroleumprice.ng on latest petrol price showed that the 650,000-barrel-per-day refinery raised its fuel price to N1,350 per liter, up from N1,275 per liter.

This means that the refinery adjusted its gantry fuel price by N75.

Recall that barely a week ago, Dangote Refinery had increased its petrol price to N1275 amid an upsurge in crude oil prices as a result of the Middle East crisis.

However, Dangote Refinery has denied that its gantry petrol price was hiked.

Nigerian Newssphere reports that since February 2026, when the war between Iran and the United States-Israel escalated, crude oil price volatility has impacted world economies, including Nigeria’s.

This comes as retail fuel prices have doubled to between N1,365 and N1,440 as of the time of filing this report.

Champions League: Arsenal break historic records after eliminating Atletico Madrid

0

Arsenal made history on Tuesday night after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Atletico Madrid secured their place in the UEFA Champions League final.

A decisive strike from Bukayo Saka in the semi-final second leg proved enough to send the Gunners through, sealing a memorable aggregate triumph.

According to OptaJoe, the result marks Arsenal’s first appearance in a Champions League final since 2006. The achievement also represents one of the longest gaps between finals in the competition’s history, comparable only to Atletico Madrid’s 40-year wait before their 2014 final and the longest such span for an English club since Liverpool FC returned to the final in 2005 after a 20-year absence.

Arsenal’s run this season has been particularly impressive, as the North London side remains unbeaten in their first 14 matches of the current Champions League campaign—a record unmatched in the competition’s history.

The victory also saw Mikel Arteta’s team equal a long-standing club record of 41 wins in a single season across all competitions, matching the feat achieved during the 1970–71 campaign.

Arsenal will now turn their attention to the final, where they are set to face either Paris Saint-Germain or Bayern Munich

Xenophobic attacks: Nigeria rejects Economic Retaliation Against South Africa — Akpabio

0

Nigeria’s Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has stated that the country will not pursue economic retaliation against South Africa despite ongoing xenophobic attacks targeting Nigerians.

Akpabio emphasized that diplomatic engagement remains the most appropriate approach to resolving the crisis in the interest of both nations, noting that punitive measures against businesses would not be Nigeria’s preferred option.

He made this position clear while responding to a proposal by Senator Adams Oshiomhole, who suggested revoking the operational licenses of South African companies such as MTN and DStv in Nigeria as retaliation. The proposal was, however, declined on procedural grounds.

The Senate president assured that the upper chamber takes the reported attacks seriously and would address the issue with urgency.

As part of its response, the Senate resolved to set up a joint ad hoc committee comprising members of both chambers of the National Assembly. The committee will embark on a fact-finding and diplomatic mission to South Africa aimed at finding lasting solutions.

The delegation is expected to engage with the South African Parliament to formally convey Nigeria’s displeasure over the attacks. Additionally, the Senate plans to write to the Speaker of the South African Parliament and invite Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs to brief lawmakers on ongoing diplomatic efforts.

Lawmakers also adopted a motion by Senator Simon Lalong calling for a review of resolutions reached during a 2019 bilateral meeting between Nigeria and South Africa to ensure their implementation.

The resolutions followed a motion of urgent national importance sponsored by Senator Bassey, titled “Intensifying Xenophobic Persecution of Nigerians in South Africa and Ghana: A Call for Urgent National, Diplomatic, and Humanitarian Action.”

During deliberations, senators were divided over whether to move discussions behind closed doors after Senator Adamu Aliero proposed a private session. The suggestion was opposed by Senator Abdul Ningi and others, who insisted on open debate.

Lawmakers expressed concern over the rising cases of physical attacks, psychological trauma, and growing fear among Nigerians abroad, noting that many are being profiled and targeted because of their nationality.

The Senate concluded proceedings with a minute of silence in honor of Nigerians who have lost their lives in the attacks.

Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has conceded that his side’s inability to convert chances proved decisive in their UEFA Champions League semi-final exit to Arsenal.

The LaLiga outfit were knocked out on Tuesday night following a 1-0 defeat at the Emirates Stadium, with Bukayo Saka scoring the only goal of the match.

Having held the Gunners to a 1-1 draw in the first leg, Atletico failed to capitalize on their opportunities in the return fixture.

Reacting after the game, Simeone acknowledged Arsenal deserved to progress, pointing to his team’s lack of clinical edge in front of goal.

“Well, if we got knocked out, it’s because our opponents deserved to get through,” he said.

“They took their big chance in the first half and deserved it. I feel calm and at peace.

“We weren’t clinical enough with the situations we created. We improved after the break, but certain moments didn’t go our way.

“We gave everything, and now we have to accept where we are. We set out to compete, and we did that, even if we didn’t win anything. We reached stages that are difficult to get to.”

BREAKING: Champions League: Arsenal eliminate Atletico Madrid to reach final

Arsenal have booked their place in the UEFA Champions League final after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Atletico Madrid on Tuesday night.

The Gunners progressed on aggregate following a 1-1 draw in the first leg at the Wanda Metropolitano last week.

At the Emirates Stadium, Mikel Arteta’s side controlled much of the first half but found it difficult to break down Atletico’s resolute defense.

Their breakthrough eventually came before the interval, as Bukayo Saka reacted quickest to a rebound from Leandro Trossard’s effort to slot home the decisive goal.

Atlético pushed for an equalizer after the break, but Arsenal held firm to secure a narrow win and a place in the final.

The Premier League side will now face either Paris Saint-Germain or Bayern Munich in the final scheduled for May 30. Champions League: Arsenal edge Atletico Madrid to reach final
