BRGIE adopts charter on Biafra Declaration in Helsinki Finland

0

The Biafra Republic Government in Exile, BRGIE has adopted charter on Biafra Declaration in an extraordinary conference held in Helsinki Finland.

Mazi Simon Ekpa, the Prime Minister Biafra Republic Government in Exile and Finland-based lawyer disclosed this in in a statement on Friday at the two-day convention.

He said there is no going back on the actualization of the Biafra referendum as BRGIE voted and adopted the Biafra Charter called the Biafra Helsinki Declaration 2023.

Speaking at the convention now known as the ‘Biafra Helsinki Declaration October 20-21, 2023’, Ekpa stated that the Nigerian government is yet to tackle the root of Biafra agitation.

He explained that the Biafra agitation, which started due to the marginalization of Igbos in Nigeria, has degenerated into self-preservation.

He accused the Nigerian government of continued injustice and unfairness against the people of Biafra.

Ekpa insisted that without equity and fairness, the idea of ‘one Nigeria’ is not sustainable.

Consequently, Ekpa noted that Igbos have declared Biafra De Facto Government (BDFG) and BRGIE to serve the Nation and People of the southeast under the occupation of Nigeria.

He added that Biafra should be allowed to have its independence and liberation.

‘”It is as though there is an international conspiracy not to talk about the ongoing conflict in Nigeria. For over a decade now, Biafrans are again been agitating for freedom. What was initially motivated by agitation against marginalization has transformed into agitation for self-preservation.

“Agitation for Biafra that reemerged again more than a decade ago to protest exclusion from governance and marginalization regarding resource sharing and infrastructure development has since turned to agitation for self-preservation.

“They are yet to make any concessions regarding the fundamental causes of the agitation in the first place.

“Citizens of the world have a right to express their displeasure with their governments, and most reasonable countries respond with dialogue and engagement. But in Nigeria, the story is different.

“Yet people talk about “one Nigeria.” No country will be one without inclusion, equity, and justice.

“Terror against Biafra continued instead of engaging in dialogue and making a sustained effort to address grievances, which has the opposite effect. You cannot claim one Nigeria while at the same time excluding segments of the country from the benefits of belonging to the same country.

“When you choose marginalization as a tool, you have wittingly or unwittingly signed up to fail”, he stated.

Danazumi bows out of NOTAP, says 98% mandate achieved

NOTAP, DanAzumi

Dr DanAzumi Ibrahim, Director-General (D-G), National Office for Technology Acquisition and Promotion (NOTAP), has said 98 per cent of the NOTAP mandate has been achieved during his tenure.

He stated this during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Thursday in Abuja (NAN) as he bowed out after eight years of leading NOTAP.

NAN reports that Ibrahim was appointed as DG/CEO of NOTAP in Oct. 2015 by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Ibrahim is an Agricultural technology expert who hails from Bauchi State.

NOTAP is responsible for monitoring, regulating, facilitating and domesticating the inflow of foreign technology in Nigeria.

The DG said NOTAP was able to secure 320 patent certificates for inventors and researchers of tertiary and research institutes and individuals from 2010 to date.

He encouraged African researchers to strive for patentable research and development (R&D) results that can attract investments and subsequently license them for commercialization and economic benefits.

Ibrahim said for any nation to develop and maximize its potential, it must have a vibrant Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) ecosystem that encourages demand-driven research for economic sustenance.

“NOTAP, while discharging one of its responsibilities of encouraging the development of indigenous technologies, noted the weak Intellectual Property culture in the Nigerian knowledge system.

“This observation encouraged NOTAP to partner with the Patent and Design Registry and Commercial Law departments of the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment.

“The synergy with the departments helped create intellectual property awareness and patent support services for Nigerian researchers in the country.

“Through this, NOTAP assisted in processing and filing their claims at no cost, as the office paid the patenting fees,” he said.

Dr Ibrahim revealed that the agency’s policies aim to foster collaboration between industries and universities to enhance productivity and stimulate Nigeria’s economic growth.

He took the opportunity to call on other industries to join in such partnerships, emphasizing their positive impact on universities and research institutions.

“NOTAP has fostered partnerships with industries via NOTAP- industry partnership, all aimed at improving Nigeria’s economic development.”

“These partnerships are initiatives for building capacity, including instances where the private sector sponsors research and development projects in universities and intervenes before intellectual property translates into commercial products and services,” he said.

He added that NOTAP saved the country about N140 billion through technology transfer agreements between 2012 and 2022.

According to him, “the accumulated sum of N74.3 billion was saved in the last nine years that would have left the country via capital flight from 2015 to 2022 under his leadership.”

NAN reports that last week, NOTAP commissioned an office complex of 60 smart offices, fully automating its technology transfer agreements processes.

NOTAP also recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding with PZ Cussons Nigeria Limited to equip an additional ten laboratories in selected institutions across Nigeria.

New NCC Boss, Maida Commits to Tinubu’s Vision on Digital Economy

EVC NCC, Aminu Maida

The new Executive Vice Chairman (EVC) of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Dr. Aminu Maida, has said he would align the Commission’s regulatory focus to achieve the promises of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda to advance the nation’s digital transformation agenda.

Maida, who spoke to the Senior Management team of the Commission at the Commission’s Head Office in Abuja Tuesday, said there is a need to ensure that the NCC strategically focuses on ensuring all Nigerians have access to affordable and reliable broadband services. Part of this is to ensure “effective broadband infrastructure diffusion across the length and breadth of Nigeria.

The new telecom regulator paid tributes to former chief executives of the Commission for their laudable role in building a resilient telecoms industry. Dr Maida said the pursuit of improved quality of service on the networks will be one of his priorities, as well as supporting the vision of the Federal Government and the Ministry of Communications, Innovations and Digital Economy.

“Considering the fact that many people are going more digital and virtual in everything they do, the telecom infrastructure is now under much stress. President Tinubu’s vision emphasises the need to build more robust broadband connectivity that will not only facilitate seamless digital transactions but also serve as the bedrock for e-governance and other socio-economic initiatives,” he said.

“As such, we would align with this aspiration to increase broadband penetration to 70 per cent and to cover 90 per cent of the population by 2025. Therefore, we need to build a reliable telecom industry with impressive quality of service (QoS) indicators with quality of experience (QoE) as our watchword and ultimate goal. This also requires us to address a number of issues such as the Right of Way (RoW) challenge, ensuring security of our telecom infrastructure, among others. Efforts must be made to significantly improve service delivery by ensuring the NCC is performance-driven,” he said.

“Mr President has a very clear agenda from which all of us are going to take our direction. The two major areas are job creation and enabling the digital economy. Where we are going in a nutshell is; everything that we do in this Commission has to align directly with the Strategic Plan of the Hon. Minister of Communications, Innovations and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani and ultimately to the Renewed Hope agenda of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. We would not deviate from that.

“We would not entertain anything that deviates from this direction because my key performance indicators (KPIs) are fed into the Minister’s KPIs and the President KPIs come from the electorate that put him into power. The Hon. Minister has said clearly that he is ready to build a robust digital infrastructure and empower three million Nigerians digitally and we have to do our best to support him in this regard,” Maida said.

He stated further that, in the Strategic Plan of the Minister, there was a plan to empower three million Nigerians in digital skills and entrepreneurship, adding that this will require the Commission to support Digital Bridge Institute (DBI) as a digital training institution, to be well positioned in driving the government’s agenda on youth empowerment.

The EVC also emphasised the importance of effective spectrum management and utilisation in supporting the envisioned digital connectivity agenda, which is critical to service deployment to the generality of Nigerians and businesses in the country.

Maida, while appreciating his predecessors and the entire staff of the Commission for the laudable role being played in digital transformation of all sectors by stimulating the deployment of baseline telecom infrastructure, however, called on the staff of the Commission to join his leadership with a sense of purpose as a team towards advancing the actualisation of the President’s Renewed Hope agenda, which, he said, recognises a thriving digital economy in achieving sustainable development and quality of life for all citizens.
