Idris disclosed this on Thursday when he received a team from Google West Africa on a courtesy call.

The Minister believed that it is important to have a platform where people can express themselves freely, but added that freedom comes with enormous responsibility, which should not translate to an avenue for creating anarchy in the country.

He commended the effort to collaborate and find common ground for the regulation of online platforms such that they will not be used against the people they are meant to serve.

Idris disclosed that the federal government will continue to promote freedom of expression, allowing the environment to be accessible for everybody to express themselves and have the right of access to information.

He noted that it is critical that those responsible for bringing out this information or creating the platforms are also very conscious that it can easily be used against the people it is meant to serve.

“We will partner with Google in promoting the free flow of information because democracy cannot survive without freedom of expression,” he said.

He commended Google for its good work and stated that the Ministry would continue to engage with them and others in its category to see that the issue of fake news becomes a thing of the past.

In his remark, the delegation leader from Google West Africa, Mr Olumide Balogun, stated that in the last three years, Google has trained over 3,500 journalists to use different tools for news verification, including digital tools to manage misinformation.

One of the innovations that we funded, called ‘full fact’ is an AI technology that helps in fact-checking”.

The Google team pledged to support the Ministry by training staff on online skills.

The Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC), Prof. Umar Danbatta, has assured that the commercial launch of Nigeria’s Fifth Generation (5G) network in selected cities will benefit telecommunications consumers.

Danbatta disclosed this Thursday at the ‘NCC Day’ held during the 18th Abuja International Trade Fair organised by the Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI).

Speaking on behalf of EVC, Director of Consumer Affairs Mr Umar Alkasim stated that as of August 2023, there were 220,715,961 million active mobile subscriptions in Nigeria, while Teledensity was 115.63 per cent at the same time.

He reiterated that the number of active Internet subscribers was 159,034,717 Million, with broadband penetration at 45.57 per cent as of August 2023.

“In this new environment, the competitiveness of Nigerian businesses depends on their ability to leverage new technologies by acquiring the necessary digital skills to do business on an international scale. This, in turn, benefits the economy financially.

“5G spectrum licenses have already been issued to companies for rollout. It is essential to state that the 5G network will bring substantial network improvements, including higher connection speed, mobility and capacity, and low-latency capabilities to communications services in Nigeria. I am happy to inform you that licensees have kicked off the commercial launch of the 5G network in some cities across the nation.

“More importantly, it is also our commitment, at NCC, to continue to provide a level-playing ground for operators to thrive, promote investment and delivery of innovative services to individual consumers and business owners by ensuring enhanced consumer quality of experience. “Danbatta stated.

He further assured that the Commission was working assiduously with various stakeholders, including the consumers, to see how more businesses can embrace digital platforms for delivering their services to the consumer.

“As a regulator, we also ensure we constantly inform you, the consumers, on how to be protected to prevent cases of online fraud or avoid consumers falling victims of cybercrime antics while in their legitimate use of the Internet.” The EVC stated.

Earlier, the Director of the Consumer Affairs Bureau, NCC, Alkasim Umar, represented by the Head of Consumer Policy Development and Monitoring at NCC, Mr Ayanbanji Ojo, outlined the various programmes put in place by the Commission to protect, inform and educate telecom consumers including Consumer Education Outreach, Consumer Complaints Management, Development of Do-Not Disturb-2442 short Code and others.

The Trade Fair kicked off on 28th September and is expected to end on 9th October.

NITRA applauds Danbatta’s Transformative Achievements in Nigeria’s Telecom Sector

In a resounding chorus of praise, a stakeholder group in the Nigerian Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has commended the Executive Vice Chairman (EVC) of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta, for his remarkable leadership and the unprecedented achievements in the nation’s telecom sector.

The stakeholders came under the auspices of the Nigeria Information Technology Reporters’ Association (NITRA).

According to the body, under Danbatta’s visionary leadership, Nigeria’s telecom sector has witnessed an astounding transformation, transcending previous limitations and emerging as a beacon of progress. His eight-year tenure as the EVC of the NCC has seen the sector attract a staggering $77 billion in investments, catapulting it to the forefront of the nation’s economic landscape.

The ICT group lauded Danbatta for overseeing a sector that now contributes a substantial 16 percent to Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), a notable increase from its 8 percent contribution in 2015. The financial impact of the sector is undeniable, with a recent report from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) revealing a significant N2.508 trillion contribution to the nation’s GDP in the first quarter of 2023, representing 14.13 per cent.

National Chairman of NITRA, Chike Onwuegbuchi, in a statement, said one of the key achievements highlighted by the ICT community was Danbatta’s bold move to embrace 5G technology, positioning Nigeria as an early adopter in the global digital economy. He said this strategic decision resulted in the generation of $820.8 million for the federal government from 5G spectrum license fees paid by leading operators.

“Furthermore, the issuance of a license to Elon Musk-owned SpaceX for Starlinks broadband services, a satellite-based wireless broadband offering with nationwide coverage potential, has been a game-changer for the industry and a testament to Danbatta’s forward-thinking approach,” he said.

The ICT group also emphasized the remarkable growth in telephone users, internet subscribers, and broadband users under Danbatta’s stewardship, which has soared to 218.9 million, 159.5 million, and 88.7 million, respectively, noting that these figures, along with the creation of numerous jobs, have underscored the sector’s pivotal role in Nigeria’s economic development.

The ICT group said Danbatta’s unwavering commitment to innovation, regulatory excellence, and active stakeholder engagement has set a powerful precedent for success and acknowledged the sector’s resilience in the face of challenges such as infrastructure vandalism, regulatory complexities, and power supply issues.

The ICT community has urged the federal government to replicate the telecom sector’s success in other industries to propel Nigeria into the ranks of the world’s top 20 economies. They view Danbatta’s leadership as a testament to what can be achieved with dedication, innovation, and visionary leadership.

Meanwhile, as the accolades pour in, Danbatta’s transformative leadership in Nigeria’s telecom sector serves as an inspiring example of how visionary leadership can drive growth, innovation, and prosperity in the nation’s economy.

“His legacy will undoubtedly be remembered as a cornerstone of Nigeria’s digital transformation journey,” said Chike in the statement.

According to a source in the state, the incident happened around 6.30 pm when the victim was returning from the burial ceremony of one of his colleagues at nearby Otukpa village on Wednesday.

According to the source, ” We learnt that the armed men stopped him after barricading the road at Agada Hill just a stone throw from Adum Oko village in the Orokam axis of the LGA.

“They took him away and abandoned his vehicle at the roadside. People only discovered that he had been kidnapped when they saw his abandoned car and the manner in which it was abandoned without any trace of him.

“Though an alarm was immediately raised, and the youths of the area embarked on a search for him, as we speak, no one knows who took him and where they took him.

“Even as we speak, his abductors have not established contact with his family; no one knows the motive of those who kidnapped him, and they have also not demanded ransom from his family members.

“Though the matter has been reported to the police, we gathered that some youths of the area are still combing the bushes to locate and possibly rescue him.”

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent SP Catherine Anene, said she was yet to receive details of the incident.
