House of reps

Senator Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe, PDP, Cross River North, has revealed that each senior Senator got N500,000 from the 2024 National Budget.

The Senator’s remark caused Tuesday’s rowdy session at the Red Chambers.

He says no Senator can accuse Senator Abdul Ningi of raising his voice over missing N3 trillion in the 2024 Budget.

“All of us are culpable. Some so-called senior senators here got 500M Naira each from the 2024 budget; I am a ranking senator, but I didn’t get anything. No Senator has a right to accuse Senator Ningi”, he said.

Earlier, a Point of Order was raised by the Senate Committee on Appropriations Chairman, Senator Olamilekan Adeola, against the allegation of Senator Ningi.

Consequently, Senator Ningi was suspended on Tuesday.

DAILY POST recalls Senator Ningi, in an interview with BBC, had the N28.7 trillion 2024 Appropriation Act and that the budget passed by the National Assembly for the 2024 fiscal year is N25 trillion while the one being implemented by the Presidency is N28.7 trillion.

The accusation had divided the lawmakers, being a subject of debate in the past few days.

Simon Ekpa: From Track Athlete To Prime Minister Of The Biafra Republic Government In Exile

0

Service to one’s country knows no bounds, and anyone willing to serve their people is welcome. This is the journey of Mazi Simon Ekpa, a former athlete and political activist who is now leading a movement to have his people exercise their human right to self-determination.

Born on March 21, 1985, Simon Njoku Ekpa hails from Ohaukwu, Ebonyi State, Nigeria. He is from the Igbo people, who reside mostly in Southern and Southeastern Nigeria. This region is part of what was formerly the Republic of Biafra, a state that was briefly independent and partially recognized from 1967-1970, a period known as the Nigerian Civil War. This conflict resulted in the deaths of millions of Biafrans due to famine caused by a military blockade of the region.

Nigeria is an amalgamation of British colonial territories in West Africa which became independent in 1960. It is a collection of vastly different cultures, with the Northern regions being mostly Muslim, while the Southern regions being a mix of Christians and adherents of traditional religions. As with many other instances in Africa, the former colonial powers’ lumping of different peoples and cultures under arbitrary country borders has resulted in long-running ethnic, religious, and cultural conflict, which has often erupted into violence.

Since the end of the Civil War, the Biafran people have been working to regain their independence, which is enshrined in the United Nations’ principles under the right to self-determination. A large number of the Biafran people reside overseas, fleeing violence and the lack of economic opportunities plaguing the region since the end of the war.

In his youth, Simon was an outstanding athlete, gaining recognition in his community for his athletic prowess, especially in the disciplines of sprinting, long jump, and triple jump. His performance caught the eye of sports authorities, and he was called on to represent Nigeria internationally multiple times. In the 2003 African Junior Athletics Championships, held in Cameroon, Simon won the silver medal in the Triple Jump.

Everything seemed to be going well, but Simon suffered a major knee injury, sidelining him from competition. According to Simon, many Nigerian athletes are left to their own devices when injured, which is why many athletes change nationalities. As for himself, he moved to Finland in 2007 to seek treatment and surgery for his knee. There, Simon found a new life and career, entering the law profession and starting his own family.

Settling down in the city of Lahti, Simon learned the Finnish language, gained Finnish citizenship, and completed his military service duties. He studied Law at Aberystwyth University, before joining the National Coalition Party of Finland and running for office in the 2022 Finnish county elections. He is currently a member and the committee chair of the transportation board at Lahden Kaupunki in Lahti. Simon has also served as the Chairman of the Playground Board, in the City Lahti, a position he held between 2017-2021. Overall, he has been active in Finnish politics since 2012.

Simon is also the founder and CEO of Ekpa & Co Oy, a law firm specializing in immigration law.

Despite moving to a new country, Simon never forgot about the land he came from and the struggles of his people. He remained active in Biafran circles, both in Finland and elsewhere, and continued supporting the independence movement. In 2021, Simon began rising in prominence, becoming a major figure in the independence movement. In April 2023, Simon was eventually elected Prime Minister of the Biafra Republic Government In-Exile, BRGIE. The BRGIE has more than 200 Cabinet ministers located across the world and liaison offices in countries across multiple continents.

The BRGIE is also in contact with de facto self-governing territories in Biafra, and is working to ensure the safety of Biafran people and protect them from violence. As Prime Minister, Simon is at the forefront of the movement, addressing the UN and other world leaders, building relationships, and opening diplomatic channels, to secure independence for his people.

“My people have been experiencing a lot of hardship, first under the colonial government and now under a government we did not consent to,” Simon says. “Our struggle has been ongoing for many decades, and I am honored with the trust and huge responsibility placed on me by the Biafran people to serve them and give them a voice in the international community.”

Starting in 2021, the Biafran people are engaged in civil disobedience activities, including large-scale sit-ins, which remain ongoing. A self-referendum, addressing the question of Biafran independence from Nigeria, was also started on February 1, 2024, and seeks to gain the consent of the people to move the process forward.

The MoU establishes a framework for collaboration, including the formation of a working group to focus on capacity building in data protection. This initiative aims to educate SMEs on adopting appropriate technical and organizational measures towards safeguarding data privacy.

Olatunji who expressed optimism about the implementation of the memoranda with the two strategic agencies assured stakeholders that the trusted use of data will guarantee short, medium and long term growth.

“You have almost 40 million players within this sector alone, imagine the exponential growth we can bring in if people can carry out transactions on the basis of trust and confidence. It is good that we are here today, to put pen into paper, we have to work together to ensure that there is privacy in what you are doing in the sector.”

The MoU between the NLRC bolsters the collaboration between the two Commissions. The DG, NLRC, Mr Lanre Gbajabiamila, expressed gratitude for NDPC’s ongoing support and also underscored the importance of safeguarding personal data within the gaming ecosystem. The MoU formalises the commitment to uphold data protection laws and implement best practices in data storage and processing.

He reiterated the significance of this partnership, emphasising the need to protect the personal data of approximately 60 million data subjects within the gaming sector. He stressed the importance of training NLRC staff and stakeholders on data protection principles to foster a culture of compliance.

He said, “We are looking at an ecosystem with about 60 million people who regularly exchange and process data, this is one sector that cannot be overlooked. SMEDAN has 40 million Nigerians monitored under them, we have almost half of the population.”

“When we talk about the interests and freedom of all Nigerians, we have to ensure that the personal data of over 220 million people are adequately protected and processed in line with extant regulatory framework, ” he added.

The Director General, NLRC, Gbajabiamila expressed appreciation to the NDPC for their ongoing work.

“The change that the establishment of NDPC has brought to the gaming value chain is commendable, we are not taking this MoU for granted. International partners come here to see what we do and make comments that are welcoming to show that we are on the right part which is acceptable to the industry for operations to come in.

“We would also like to collaborate with you in conducting joint awareness campaigns and capacity building on data governance.

The DG, SMEDAN, Odii expressed appreciation for NDPC’s readiness to collaborate. He emphasised the significance of data protection and complying with the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023, in preparing for international business.

He said, “SMEDAN is out to prevent exposure of our data for selfish and malicious operations. We have to show that the data we are mining in Nigeria is protected according to our data protection law.”

“We cannot be a development agency if we are not teaching small businesses the right thing to do. In developing small businesses, we need to upskill and sensitise them. We willl go into the nooks and crannies of Nigeria to make them understand that if you process data then you must abide by the data protection laws in Nigeria,” he added.

These collaborations mark significant milestones in NDPC’s mission to promote data protection and privacy across diverse sectors in Nigeria. The commission remains committed to fostering partnerships that uphold the rights of individuals and ensure the responsible handling of personal data.

UAE suspends visa ban on Nigerians after two years

0
The United Arab Emirates, UAE, has announced the resumption of visa services for Nigerian citizens wishing to visit the country.
This comes two years after UAE imposed a visa ban on Nigerians and automatically rejected pending visa applications.
A joint announcement by the governments of Nigeria and the UAE entitled, ‘Resumption of Visa Services for Nigerians Travelling to the UAE’, said the visa ban was lifted on March 4, 2024.
The statement said the commencement of visa issuance was a “milestone, reflecting the successful outcome of in-depth talks between the two nations and underscoring, “Our shared commitment to strengthening ties, enhancing cultural exchanges and fostering opportunities for economic and social collaborations.”

To ensure a seamless and efficient visa application experience, the UAE has introduced an enhanced document verification process.

The UAE Ambassador to Nigeria, Saleem Saeed Al-Shamsi highlighted the importance of this updated procedure.

Starting from March 4, 2024, all Nigerian applicants for UAE visas are required to first obtain a document verification number. This essential step according to the UAE is to be completed by visiting the dedicated online Document Verification Hub platform https/documentverificationhub.com).

He said, “We are committed to facilitating straightforward and expedited visa applications for Nigerians. The introduction of the Document Verification Number is designed to enhance the integrity of our application process and ensure prompt processing for all applicants.”

After obtaining the Document Verification Number, applicants can proceed with their visa applications through designated travel agents, after which the process will be completed at the Embassy of the UAE in Abuja or Lagos.

The announcement, the UAE said signifies, “our ongoing efforts to enhance the strong ties between the UAE and Nigeria, contributing to the prosperity and well-being of our people.”

Recall that the UAE had in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and behavior of some nationals of other countries in 2022 banned nationals of some 20 African countries including Nigeria from entering its capital city, Dubai.

This was followed by a spat between Nigeria and UAE over the procedure for handling travellers entering Dubai during the pandemic which Nigeria frowned at.

The decision among others forced Emirates to exit Nigeria including claims of millions of dollars belonging to the country trapped in Nigeria.

The Nigerian Communications Commission says network service providers have barred all Subscriber Identification Modules and SIMs without National Identity Numbers.

The Commission’s Spokesman, Reuben Morka, disclosed this during a Channels Television interview monitored by Newssphere.

According to him, those subscribers disconnected have not been serious about their NIN- SIM linkage.

He noted that the primary objective of the policy is to boost security and national planning.

“It will be difficult to place a hand on the actual number of phone lines that have been barred. But take it that everybody who has not submitted NIN to service providers has been barred.

“The service providers started barring subscribers many days before the deadline.

“We are expecting to do an audit on that before the end of the week because the service providers ought to send in data of the subscribers barred.

“The process is to have an identity attached to a SIM. One of the benefits of SIM registration is to have a digital identity. The Nigerian government is very serious about having NIN as managed by NIMC. The idea is to ensure that we have those together. Some objectives, if you remember, are security and national planning. Also includes Know your customer’s details”, he said.

Recall that following the expiration of NIN-SIM linkage on February 28, network operators said it had disconnected 40 million subscribers with NIN.

The Mobile Network providers said the next phase is barr subscribers with multiple SIMs without NIN linkage.

The development comes after several deadline extensions since the policy was kickstarted by the then Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami, in 2020.
