Under Cable Cuts: Voice, Data services 90% restored in Nigeria- NCC

The Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC says 90 per cent of voice, Data services have been restored in Nigeria after disruptions caused by the undersea cable cuts.

Reuben Muoka, Director, Public Affairs at NCC gave this update in a statement on Monday.

The commission stated that Mobile Network Operators had assured that voice, Data services would be restored pending full repairs.

“Following the disruption on March 14, 2024, which affected data and voice services due to cuts in undersea fibre optics along the coasts of Cote d’Ivoire and Senegal, we are pleased to announce that services have now been restored to approximately 90 per cent of their peak utilization capacities.

“All operators who were impacted by the cuts have taken recovery capacity from submarine cables which were not impacted by the cuts, and have thus recovered approximately 90 per cent of their peak utilisation capacities.

“Mobile Network Operators have assured the Commission that data and voice services would operate optimally pending full repairs of the undersea cables as they have managed to activate alternative connectivities to bring back the situation to normalcy.

“We extend our appreciation to telecom consumers for their patience and understanding during the downtime caused by the undersea fibre cuts”, the statement reads.

Recalls that on March 14 telecoms service outage hit Nigeria over undersea cable cuts.

 

 

NIN-SIM Linkage: NIMC, NCC unveil collaborative efforts

The National Identity Management Commission, NIMC and the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC announced a strategic collaboration aimed at enhancing processes related to the National Identification Number, NIN-SIM linkage.

The agencies disclosed this in a joint statement on Sunday signed by Ayodele Babalola Technical Adviser, Media, and Communications to the DG/CEO of NIMC and Reuben Muoka, Director of Public Affairs, NCC.

Accordingly, the move is aimed to address lingering challenges associated with NIN-SIM linkage.

“In recent times, the NIN-SIM linkage exercise has become subject of national discourse, reflecting the critical importance of aligning SIM registrations with individuals’ unique national identification numbers. Recognising the significance of this initiative in enhancing security and improving service delivery, both NIMC and NCC are committed to improving processes and enhancing efficiency.

“Under this collaboration, NIMC and NCC will work closely to explore synergies and leverage each other’s expertise and resources in the following key areas:

“Streamlining the NIN-SIM Linkage Process: NIMC and NCC will collaborate to ensure a seamless experience for Nigerian telecommunication subscribers. This includes exploring innovative approaches to facilitate the swift verification and authentication of NINs during SIM registration and activation processes.

“Capacity Building and Public Awareness: Both agencies will collaborate on initiatives aimed at enhancing public awareness and understanding of the NIN-SIM linkage requirements. This includes educational campaigns, training sessions for stakeholders, and the dissemination of accurate information to the public to encourage compliance with the linkage directives.

“Data Verification and Validation: NIMC will continue to extend its support to NCC by providing assistance in verifying National Identification Numbers (NINs) associated with SIM registrations. Leveraging NIMC’s robust database and authentication infrastructure, telecommunication operators will validate submitted NINs while ensuring the accuracy and integrity of subscriber data.

“Policy Harmonisation and Regulatory Framework: NIMC and NCC will collaborate on aligning policies and regulatory frameworks to facilitate the seamless integration of NIN-SIM linkage processes within the telecommunications ecosystem. This includes harmonising data protection and privacy regulations to safeguard the confidentiality and security of subscriber information.

“Both NIMC and NCC are committed to fostering a collaborative and transparent partnership that prioritises the interests of Nigerian citizens and promotes national development. By pooling our resources and expertise, we aim to overcome the challenges associated with the NIN-SIM linkage exercise and ensure its continued successful implementation”, statement reads.

NIN: NDPC Investigates Alleged Privacy Breach at NIMC

The National Commissioner, Nigeria Data Protection Commission, NDPC, Vincent Olatunji, has ordered a full-scale investigation in respect of allegations of unauthorized access to the personal data of enrollees in the database of National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).

According to a statement on Sunday signed by  Babatunde Bamigboye, Head of Legal, Enforcement and Regulations, this investigation is a further regulatory measure to be taken by NDPC in the wake of public concerns over reports of illegal access to personal data of enrollees by a shadowy entity called XpressVerify.com.

It will be recalled that prior to now, NDPC has been engaging with NIMC on fostering adequacy of data protection. To this end, NDPC held a training with relevant officers of NIMC early February, 2024. This is one in a continuum of measures being put in place by the Federal Government to ensure data privacy and protection.

“We note that NIMC has initiated internal investigation and it has immediately given full assurances of cooperation with NDPC to get to the root of the allegation and to review existing mediums through which any entity may lawfully verify the identity of enrollees on its platform. Furthermore, NDPC will work with relevant agencies to audit the trails of the alleged unauthorized data processing and monetization of same, and those who are found culpable for violating the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023 will be brought to justice.

“The National Commissioner further directed that preliminary findings of the investigation should be made public within seven days”, the statement reads.

NIN: NIMC assures Nigerians of Data security

The National Identity Management Commission, NIMC has assured Nigerians of their Data security amid speculation of data breach.

The Commission gave this assurance in a statement on Sunday by its head Corporate Communications, Kayode Adegoke.

NIMC stressed that its NIN verification and other services portal are intact and save.

The Commission dismissed claim of citizens’ data breach by a private organization, XpressVerify.

Accordingly he said, the Director General and Chief Executive Officer of NIMC, Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote had ordered investigation into the alleged data breach claim.

“The Commission wishes to state that it offers NIN verification and other services through licensed partners. However,  XpressVerify is not one of the Commission’s licensed partners.

“We express our gratitude to our media partners and the whistleblowers for bringing this to our attention and wish to assure Nigerians and legal residents that there is no data breach of any sort and the Citizens’ data is safe and secure in the Nigeria’s National identity database.

“The Director General and Chief Executive Officer of NIMC, Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote has promptly ordered a comprehensive investigation into the matter to find out if any of the Commission’s Tokenisation verification agents has in any way breach the licensing agreement either directly or through any of their sub-licensees.

“Engr Coker-Odusote affirms the commitment of NIMC to data protection and privacy, and assures that no stone will be left unturned in ensuring the safety and security of the data of all enrollees. ‘Top-level security is in place to protect the NIN and other personal data of every citizen and legal resident, she said.

“NIMC reaffirms its unwavering dedication to safeguarding, securing, and responsibly managing the data entrusted to us. The Commission understands the critical importance of maintaining public trust and confidence in our operations, and we will continue to uphold the highest standards of integrity and accountability”, the statement reads.

 

 

 

 

Biafracoin: Beware of fraudsters-Ekpa warns

The Prime Minister of the Biafra Republic Government in Exile, Simon Ekpa, has warned prospective users of Biafracoin against emerging fraudsters.

Ekpa disclosed this in a statement on Saturday through his official X account.

Recall that BRGIE, two weeks ago, announced plans to kickstart its Biafracoin, a cryptocurrency platform, in March, 2024.

However, in an update, Mazi Ekpa, the Finnish-based lawyer, urged prospective users of the Biafracoin not to send personal information to anyone outside the official site of the Bank of Biafra.

“Attention to every Biafran on Twitter now X following the development on Biafracoin.

“Please, do not send any email to anyone requesting you to reach out to customer support for your wallet; they are the scammers and disbanded anonymous IPOB Nigeria criminals who have now activated their pages because of Biafracoin, like this Amanda here. Don’t ever send your information to anyone outside the Bank of Biafra official site, which is not public yet”, he wrote.

BRGIE hinted at plans to unveil the website of Biafracoin by March 19, 2024.

NITDA, e-Village collaborate to boost Nigeria’s tech ecosystem

The National Information Technology Development Agency, NITDA is set to partner with the Entrepreneurship Village (eVillage) in fostering technology innovations and inclusivity in the country.

This was made known when the Director General of NITDA, Kashifu Inuwa, recently received the Chief Executive Officer of the eVillage, Sunil Santanam and his team at the corporate headquarters of the agency in Abuja.

The visit was to seek NITDA’s intervention on digital infrastructure for the eVillage Innovation and Transformation Centre.

Inuwa also expressed his excitement at the collaboration because according to him, it aligns with the Agency’s newly crafted Strategic Roadmap and Action Plan (SRAP 2024-2027) pillars of Building a Robust Technology Research Ecosystem, Promoting Inclusive Access to Digital Infrastructure and Services as well as Nurturing an Innovative and Entrepreneurial Ecosystem.

“I see this as a potential technology development zone because when you talk about the technology development zone, it’s not about bringing big hardware or manufacturing equipment and so on, but bringing people together, creating the ecosystem that can ignite and spark conversation about technology on solving real-life problems”, he added.

While giving assurances of the Agency’s support, Inuwa believes that the proposed technology development zone is a technological advancement initiative that promises to catalyze immense transformative change in the country.

Central to the partnership proposal is the acceleration of the technology development zone across the six geopolitical zones in the nation and Inuwa disclosed that all the arrangements between the two organisations would be formalized through a memorandum of understanding.

Earlier in his remark, Santanam expressed his gratitude to the NITDA DG and his team for the privilege given to him by agreeing to partner with the Village.

He asserted that the opportunities being offered by the Village, if leveraged, would bring immense development to the large youthful population and the entrepreneurship ecosystem as a whole.

“It is a step forward for Nigeria, a step forward for the youth of Nigeria, a step forward for the entrepreneurs of Nigeria and as far as infrastructure and the facilities that eVillage will be offering, we will be second to none in Africa”, he averred.

In her remark, the village’s Director of Initiatives and Partnerships, Joy Francis, shared insights on the Global Entrepreneurship Festival that would come up later in the year in November.

She stated that “the event will bring the global community to your doorsteps and also build a lasting entrepreneurial platform for the benefit of this generation and the coming ones”.

 

 

ICPC, African Bar Association to Collaborate on Recovery of Proceeds of Crime

The Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, SAN has expressed the need to engage the African Bar Association (ABA) on recovery of proceeds of crime.

The ICPC Chairman stated this when a delegation from the Association led by the President, Mr Hannibal Uwaifo Esq. visited the Commission on a courtesy visit on Thursday.

Noting that investigations may lead to working under multiple jurisdictions, the ICPC boss explained that the Commission will benefit from the ABA’s presence across different African countries. He said “Repatriation of proceeds of crime is always a challenge. We need resources to develop our infrastructure in the African continent.”

The Chairman stressed that corruption is a unique problem to Africans and in our collaborative effort with other agencies, it is paramount to be ahead by employing technological tools in the fight against corruption. “We need to start thinking about using technology like A.I. to deter tech-advanced lawbreakers from causing havoc.”

The ICPC boss concluded by pledging that the Commission will continue taking measures to ensure that the integrity of its staff is maintained, as it is vital to implementing ICPC’s mandate.

Earlier in his address, Mr Hannibal Uwaifo Esq. expressed the Association’s commitment to supporting the anti-corruption fight and urged the Commission to uphold its staff, as investigators, to the highest standards.

 

Olubadan of Ibadanland, Lekan Balogun dies

The 42nd Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Lekan Balogun is died.

Newssphere gathered that the Olubadan joined his ancestors at the University College Hospital (UCH) Ibadan, the Oyo state capital.

Balogun came from Ali-Iwo compound in the present Ibadan North East local government area.

The monarch breath the last breath shortly after he was moved to the health facility, Newssphere gathered.

He was an academic, a politician before he ascended the throne in 2022.

The monarch was a lecturer at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria and was later elected to represent Oyo Central Senatorial District between 1999 and 2003.

Balogun who has a doctor of philosophy became the Olubadan on 11 March 2022.

He succeeded Oba Saliu Akanmu Adetunji who joined his ancestors on 2nd January, 2022.

 

 

Undersea cable cuts disrupt data, voice services in Nigeria- NCC reveals

The Nigerian Communications Commission says a combination of cable cuts, resulting in equipment faults on the major undersea cables along the West African Coast, have negatively impacted data and fixed telecom services in several countries of West Africa, including Nigeria, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Senegal, Cote de Ivoire, among others.

Director of Public Affairs at NCC, Reuben Muoka disclosed this in a statement on Thursday night.

NCC said that the incident occurred somewhere in Cote de’Ivoire and Senegal, with an attendant disruption in Portugal.

The Commission said that the Cable companies – West African Cable System (WACS) and African Coast to Europe (ACE) in the West Coast route from Europe have experienced faults while SAT3 and MainOne have downtime.

“Similar undersea cables providing traffic from Europe to the East Coast of Africa, like Seacom, Europe India Gateway (EIG), Asia-Africa-Europe 1 (AAE1), are said to have been cut at some point around the Red Sea, resulting in degradation of services across on these routes,” a statement signed by Reuben Muoka, the NCC Director of Press, said.

“In Nigeria and other West African countries, Internet access and speed have experienced disruptions in the networks of service providers in the affected countries.

“Operators of these cables have commenced repairs already, and services are gradually being restored.

“They have promised to work round the clock to ensure that services are restored to the affected countries within the shortest possible time.

“It is important to bring this information to the knowledge of corporate and individual consumers on these services.”

ICPC Calls for Preventive Measures against Corruption

The Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) Musa Aliyu, SAN, has called on all Nigerians from different sectors to adopt preventive measures in order to win the fight against corruption.

Aliyu made this call when the American Business Council (ABC), paid a courtesy visit to him at the ICPC headquarters on Tuesday.

The ICPC Chairman who was represented by the Secretary to the Commission Mr. Clifford Okwudiri Oparaodu stressed the importance of adopting preventive methods in fighting corruption while highlighting the prevention aspect of the Commission’s mandate.

He went further to state that the Commission through the Public Enlightenment and Education Department has set up Schools Anti-Corruption Clubs (SACs) to enlighten the younger generation on the dangers of corruption and to enlist their support against corruption.

Since greed, poverty, abuse of office and other vices have stalled the fight against corruption in Nigeria, the ICPC boss said that it was important that Nigerians take the fight against corruption personal to boost economic development.

“The fight against corruption cannot be done by the anti-graft agencies alone”. He said.
Earlier in her remarks, the CEO/Executive Secretary of ABC, Mrs. Margaret Olele who led the delegation said the visit was aimed to propose potential partnership in a project called the Private Sector Development for Democracy Forum (PSDDF).

Speaking further on the objectives of the forum, Joe Abah, Country Director Development Activities International (DAI), and Steering Committee member (PSDDF), said the forum had its focus on questions revolving around the level of corruption, lack of accountability and decline of trust in governance.

He went further to say that as Nigeria celebrates 25 years of un-broken democracy, the forum’s objectives also include addressing issues of corruption, strengthening democracy, reinforcing democratic institutions, promoting capacity building and civic education; land tenure reforms and data-driven dialogue.

Abah stressed the need for institutions to collaborate to rid the nation of corruption as the government cannot win the fight alone.

Also speaking during the visit, Lola Adekanye, Country Director, Centre for International Private Enterprise (CIPE), expressed the belief that ICPC’s partnership would help change the structure and the norms that enable corruption.

In his response Secretary to the Commission said ICPC is ready and willing to partner with ABC to reduce corruption to the barest minimum and boost economic development.
