I’ll be at Galatasaray for many years – Osimhen

0

Galatasaray striker, Victor Osimhen has insisted that he will be at the club for years to come.

Recall that Osimhen signed a four-year deal with Galatasaray after joining the Turkish champions on a permanent transfer from Napoli earlier this summer.

The Nigeria international has socred two goals for the Turkish gaints so far this season.

Speaking after leading Galatasaray to beat Çaykur Rizespor 3-1 in the Turkish Super Lig on Saturday, Osimhen said at his post-match interview (via habersarikirmizi):

“I’m at home, and I’ll be here for years to come.

“Everyone wanted me to stay here, and I wanted to too. It’s great to continue scoring goals at Ali Sami Yen Rams Park, one of the most beautiful stages in world football.”

Osimhen will now hope to lead Galatasaray to victory again when they face Eyüpspor in their next game after the international break.

Good morning! Here are six top headlines from Nigerian Newspapers today;

1. The Vice President of Colombia, Francia Márquez arrived at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja on Saturday evening for a three-day official visit to Nigeria. Márquez’s visit, which marks a significant moment in Nigeria–Colombia relations, is expected to strengthen diplomatic and strategic ties between both nations.

2. Political tension is rising in Kaduna State after the African Democratic Congress, ADC disowned a controversial event linked to former governor Nasir El-Rufai, while the police launched an investigation into allegations of violence and gunfire at the gathering. The Kaduna State Police Command confirmed that it received reports of political thugs firing gunshots during the meeting.

3. Minister of Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, says Governor Siminalayi Fubara and members of the state House of Assembly will return on September 18, when the state of emergency in Rivers elapses. Wike stated this on Saturday shortly after casting his vote in the ongoing local government election in the state.

4. Nigeria’s daily gas production rose to 7.59 billion standard cubic feet per day, BSCFD in July 2025. In the month under review, the country recorded an energy milestone as gas flaring fell to 7.16%. The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, NUPRC broke the news in a press statement at the weekend.

5. Troops of Joint Task Force, North East ‘Operation Hadin Kai’, OPHK say they have neutralised 12 suspected members of Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists after operations at various locations of Mafa local government area of Borno state. Sources revealed on Saturday that, apart from killing the terrorists’ assorted arms and ammunition were recovered by troops.

Abuja public hospitals in total collapse as Wike looks away

0

The health sector in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja is in total collapse under its minister, Nyesom Wike.

The situation in the nation’s capital public hospitals is in dire need of attention; unfortunately, Wike looks away despite the critical nature of the sector.

Abuja hospital decay

Two years down the line, it is still hard to pinpoint a finished health project in the FCT, while roads and other infrastructural development litter the seat of power.

Obviously, Wike seems to be uninterested while Abuja’s public hospital turns into a carcas.

The cliché “health is wealth” resonates most profoundly when illness strikes. Yet, for many residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), this wealth feels increasingly out of reach. Indeed, public healthcare in the nation’s capital is on the brink of collapse, underscored by a staggering doctor-to-patient ratio and overstretched facilities struggling to meet the growing needs of the population.

A recent visit by Nigerian Newssphere to Wuse District Hospital in Zone 3, Abuja, paints a vivid picture of these challenges. The facility was filled to capacity, with crowded corridors and overflowing waiting areas. For many patients who cannot afford private care, the hospital represents a source of hope – yet that hope often feels elusive.

Despite arriving at the hospital before dawn, several patients expressed frustration at not being seen by a doctor. Omawunmi (not her real name) described her disappointment:

“I arrived here before 7:00 a.m. and met only a few people ahead of me,” she said. “But because of the ‘man-know-man’ culture, several others who came much later were able to see a doctor before I did. I find this deeply unfair.”

For others, the challenges go beyond long queues. Firdausi Bala, another patient, lamented the shortage of doctors and the delays between shifts:

“Sometimes it takes hours for those scheduled for the afternoon shift to take over from the morning team,” she explained. “Patients are left unattended, and it’s frustrating. The authorities need to investigate this.”

A System Under Strain

Public healthcare is meant to be a cornerstone of modern society — a safety net for those who cannot afford private alternatives. But in Abuja, that net is fraying.

The numbers are telling. The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends a doctor-to-patient ratio of 1:600. Yet, across Nigeria, the reality is far worse: in many areas, there is just one doctor for over 2,000 patients. While the FCT performs slightly better with about 4,453 doctors serving roughly 3.5 million residents—a ratio of 1:786—this is still far below the global benchmark.

This shortage compounds delays, frustrates patients, and burdens healthcare workers, leaving the system stretched to its limits.

Health Insurance: A Missing Safety Net

Another troubling dimension of the crisis is the low subscription rate to Nigeria’s health insurance scheme. Despite government efforts, only about 5% of Nigerians are currently enrolled in any form of health insurance.

At Wuse Hospital, several patients complained about being excluded from the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) because they are artisans, traders, or other informal-sector workers. One patient explained:

“The scheme is mostly for civil servants and people in formal jobs. We, the business people, are left on our own.”

This exclusion forces millions to pay for healthcare out-of-pocket, a burden that often leads to delayed treatment or financial hardship.

A Path Forward: Implementing the NHIA Act of 2022.

In May 2022, the government enacted the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) Act, replacing the old NHIS law and introducing a mandatory health insurance scheme for all Nigerians and legal residents. The goal is ambitious: universal health coverage that extends beyond civil servants to include those in the informal sector — artisans, traders, and small business owners.

The law also empowers the NHIA to regulate and integrate existing schemes, manage the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF), and ensure better access to affordable care for vulnerable groups.

However, laws on paper are not enough. Without aggressive implementation, public awareness campaigns, and proper funding, millions will remain excluded from its benefits.

The Time to Act Is Now

For the NHIA Act to deliver on its promise, policymakers must act decisively by:

Expanding access to affordable health insurance across both formal and informal sectors.

Launching nationwide awareness campaigns to encourage enrolment.

Investing in hospital infrastructure and increasing the number of trained healthcare professionals.

Enforcing transparency in managing the BHCPF and related funds to ensure resources reach those most in need.

Until these measures are prioritised, the average Nigerian, particularly those outside the formal workforce, will continue to face long queues, inadequate care, and crushing out-of-pocket expenses.

A healthier, more resilient nation begins with transforming the NHIA Act’s promise into reality. For Abuja’s residents and millions across the country, health must no longer be a luxury but a guaranteed right.

Fubara: Emergency rule in Rivers expires September 18 – Wike

0
Wike Minister of FCT
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and former rivers  governor, Nyesom Wike, on Saturday, expressed hope that the state of emergency in the state will expire on September 18.
Wike said that, with the expiration, the Rivers State Assembly is expected to resume its duties.
He spoke after casting his vote in the ongoing local government election in Rivers State.
This means that Simi Fubara and other elected official would return next month.
Recall that President Bola Tinubu had declared emergency rule in Rivers State to prevent the outbreak of a political crisis. Tinubu had suspended Governor Sim Fubara, his deputy, and the State House of Assembly for six months.
However, Wike said: “As far as we are concerned, this election is peaceful, people are trooping out and at the end of the day the election has been conducted successfully and peacefully.
“I do know that by September 18, the state of emergency will expire and the state assembly will come back to their job and we will have a government at the grassroots level.”
He said further:” The coast is clear for the state of emergency to be lifted, being that the state government has its representative and the local government has its representatives, so we are good to go.”

Rising energy costs: ECN, stakeholders provide solutions to reduce wastage, avert business shutdown in Nigeria

The Energy Commission of Nigeria and a cross section of energy sector stakeholders have provided a comprehensive solution to prevent the shutdown of businesses over the rising cost of energy in Nigeria.

This was the central theme at a one-day sensitisation workshop on industrial energy efficiency best practices in Nigeria organised by the Energy Commission of Nigeria in collaboration with the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation and the Global Environment Facility’s project.

A cross section of stakeholders during the meeting in Abuja
A cross section of stakeholders during the meeting in Abuja

This comes amid a surge in the price of energy in Nigeria.

Recall that between 2024 and 2025, Nigeria experienced a 200 per cent to 300 per cent electricity tariff hike from N66–68/kWh to N225/kWh due to the electricity subsidy removal by the Nigerian government for Band A customers getting 20-24 hours of power supply.

The cost of off-grid energy has equally skyrocketed in the past year.

Consequently, stakeholders gathered in Abuja to provide a research-driven solution to prevent energy wastage, a plausible remedy to rising energy costs in Nigeria.

In his remarks, the Director General of ECN, Mustapha Abdullahi, said amid the high energy cost, energy wastage should be avoided as much as possible.

“High energy pricing and subsidy removal – energy wastage should be avoided as much as possible. Hence, the need for this workshop on energy efficiency and conservation best practices.

He explained that energy efficiency is a way of managing energy consumption through efficient end-use technologies and practices that minimise waste, resulting in using less energy to provide the same products or services.

He added that energy efficiency “will ultimately reduce the energy intensity of the nation’s economic sectors.”

On his part, a consultant to the ECN on the Industrial Energy Efficiency (IEE) database developed under the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) and Global Environment Facility (GEF)’s project, Engr. Okon Ekpenyong said businesses do not need to shut down due to high energy costs.

He urged business owners, manufacturers, and investors to minimise energy wastage as a means to reduce the impact of high energy costs.

“This sensitisation is to let people know that an increase in energy pricing should not necessarily lead to the closure of business because there are a lot of measures you can take to minimise wastage because you are only paying for what you are consuming or what you are wasting. You pay for not only what you are using efficiently but also what you are using, even what you are wasting; you are paying for it. Understanding that the prices of this electricity, the tariffs, are going on and are going higher, there is a need for you to reduce wastage.

“And then, of course, that means going efficient. So the sensitisation now is to bring out those measures that we could use to minimise waste. That is by going into energy-efficient operations.”

On how to reduce energy wastage, Ekpenyong said, “For those energy-efficient operations, of course, there are some low-cost measures. Like, if you are not using appliances, put them off, any appliances off. And when you want to do new procurements, think about more energy-efficient appliances or devices.

“These are some of the things. And also create awareness. It’s not enough to say we want to save energy because it is human.

“Human behaviour counts a lot when we are talking about low-cost energy savings. How we use the appliances. Creating awareness among all the end users.

“If it is only me that is aware and the other person is not aware, while I’m saving, the other is wasting. So awareness and sensitisation are also very good energy-saving measures. Letting people know.

“It is not something like that because what you will save depends on what you are using. For instance, if you were using a 60-watt bulb, now you use a 5-watt LED.

“You know that you have saved 55 watts. Of course, energy is not measured in power. It’s measured in energy, kilowatt hours, over time”.

He further urged Nigerians to adopt the UNIDO’s Energy Management Systems Standards, 50001.

“UNIDO’s EnMS/ESO/ISO 50001 is a systematic breakdown of how an industry can make these energy-saving measures their day-to-day life, part of their life. So ISO 5001 is a process standard, telling you that if you want to make industrial energy efficiency your way of life as an industry, how you make it is that you save energy.

Also, the National Project Coordinator of GEF-UNIDO IEE and the Resource Efficiency and Cleaner Production project, Oladipo Jacob, urged businesses to imbibe energy efficiency and resource efficiency to boost their production.

“My advice is that they should imbibe energy efficiency and resource efficiency in their production. It’s the only way to make an impact and secure their businesses. The outcome of this project will be made available to industries and all other sectors of the country so that they can benefit from this support,” he stated.

Newssphere reports that Standard Organisation of Nigeria, other stakeholders also harped on the adoption of energy efficiency measures in Nigeria.

Fabregas is enjoying life at Como and has turned down offers from Bayer Leverkusen, Inter Milan and Roma.

Champions League draw: ‘Just hoping we don’t get Grimsby’ – Ten Hag’s Leverkusen mocks Man Utd

Bayer Leverkusen, club of former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag, has mocked the Red Devils ahead of the Champions League draw.

Grimsby Town, a club in the English League Two, knocked out Manchester United in the second round of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday.

The unexpected result has since been generating reactions and is now a talking point for fans worldwide.

Manchester United fired Ten Hag last season and appointed Ruben Amorim, who has not been able to turn things around at Old Trafford.

Ten Hag was hired by Bayer Leverkusen, who have now joined in mocking the former Premier League kings on social media.

Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo missed for the Red Devils.

“Just hoping we don’t get Grimsby…” Leverkusen wrote on social media.

Ten Hag was without a job before Leverkusen appointed him as their new manager.

EPL: Arteta speaks on Eze playing Odegaard’s role in Arsenal squad

Arsenal boss, Mikel Arteta, has spoken about Eberechi Eze playing in Martin Odegaard’s role against Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday.

Eze was unveiled before the Gunners’ fans before the 5-0 win over Leeds United at the Emirates Stadium.

During the game, Odegaard picked up a shoulder problem and is a major doubt for this weekend’s trip to Liverpool.

When asked whether Eze can play in Odegaard’s position against Liverpool, Arteta told reporters: “We have options in that position and that’s the good thing we have this year.

“Let’s see [on Odegaard]. Another day. I’m not going to give you any more clues!”

On Eze’s versatility, he added: “We have a lot of players who can play in different positions and fill gaps.

“That is going to be very necessary, so very happy to have the ability to do that.”

CSO Demands Justice for Hadiza Musa Baffa

A Civil Society Organisation (CSO) under the auspices of the Talk Initiative Foundation has thrown its weight behind Ms. Hadiza Musa Baffa, with a call for justice over her ordeal with former Minister of Special Duties, Mr. Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN.

Assistant Executive Assistant of the group, Sefinatu Ahmed, made the appeal during a media briefing in Abuja.

She described the development as heartbreaking and urged Nigerians, civil society groups, and advocates of justice to rally behind Hadiza, stressing that she must not face the battle alone.

Ms. Ahmed emphasized that the campaign has no political undertone but is strictly about the safety of a mother and the welfare of her child.

She therefore demanded that security agencies and the judiciary conduct a thorough, transparent, and impartial investigation into the matter.

According to her, justice must not only be done but must also be seen to be done.

The Talk Initiative Foundation reaffirmed its commitment to protecting human dignity, promoting equality, and amplifying the voices of the vulnerable, while pledging to stand by Hadiza until justice prevails.

“We are calling for independent oversight of the court proceedings, protection for the survivor, and accountability for the alleged abuse of power,’’ she said.

They emphasise that Hadiza’s case highlights the systemic silencing and emotional manipulation allegedly perpetrated by a former government official.

“We are urging women’s rights organizations, bar associations, and human rights defenders to support Hadiza, and view her case as a national emergency.

“The voices of survivors should echo loudly and must go hand-in-hand with dismantling the political and legal barriers that prevent justice from being served,’’ she said.

The CSO added that not enough attention was paid to pressing issues faced by women and girls by responsible authorities to unravel what often prevents them from speaking out as in the case of Hadiza.

“There are not enough protective, referral and support services for survivors, and the fact that perpetrators rarely face prosecution or conviction leaves survivors in a cycle of trauma, stigma and pain.’’

“Additionally, Hadiza’s case aims to set a precedent for similar cases, demonstrating that powerful individuals in Nigeria can abuse their power without facing consequences,” she said.

Also speaking the Victim Hadiza Baffa narrated her ordeal.

She alleges that Turaki used his influence to silence her for over a decade and that he is the father of her child.

“He has been using his power and his status to threaten my life and frustrate my life with my child and denying the child,’’ she alleged.

She recounted that in September 2014, while she was a student of Baze University, Abuja, the minister sent his driver, identified simply as Shehu, to pick her up around 4 p.m.

She was then taken to a residence on Yadema Street, Asokoro, which she later described as “Han’s place.”

Hadiza said the following day, in the dead of night, the former minister gained access to the room where she was kept.

“He came around 1 a.m. in 2014. I don’t want to go into details because it’s not a fun thing to say. He raped me that night and asked me not to say anything. He left and I was really scared to talk,” she alleged.

According to the group the campaign tagged #JusticeForHadiza is not just a slogan but a call to conscience.

Our Correspondent reports that all efforts to reach to former Minister of Special Duties, Mr. Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, proved abortive.
