This comes barely four months after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu appointed Ojulari to steer the affairs of NNPCL.

In a shocking revelation on Thursday, Ojulari confirmed that he and the state-owned oil firm are under attack.

“We are under attack. It is real,” he told the leadership of the Petroleum & Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN), who paid him a visit in Abuja recently.

“The enemies of this company and Nigerians will not win,” he said.

NNPCL’s Ojulari leadership had in May 2025 announced the shutdown of the Port Harcourt refinery.

Int’l passport fee now expensive more than Nigerian workers’ minimum wage—Peter Obi

0

The Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, has decried the 100 percent hike in the international passport fee to N100,000 and N200,000, respectively.

In a post on his official X handle late on Thursday, Obi said the obsession of this administration with putting a burden on the populace is becoming legendary.

Nigerian Newssphere reports that the Federal Government on Thursday announced the increase of international passport fees.

Accordingly, a 32-page 5-year validity passport will be N100,000, up from N50,000.

Also, a 64-page passport with 10-year validity is N200,000, up from N100,000 in September last year.

The government through Nigeria Immigration Service announced that it will become effective from September 1, 2024.

Reacting, the former Anambra State governor said in a country where the new minimum wage is only N70,000, the cost of a single passport now exceeds a worker’s monthly salary.

According to him, instead of making life easier, the government keeps shifting the burden onto ordinary Nigerians.

“It is alarming that the price of the international passport is higher than what workers earn in a month,” he wrote.

NCC advances Cybersecurity Framework to Safeguard Nigeria’s Telecom Infrastructure

0

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) is firming up a cybersecurity framework for securing digital infrastructure and enhancing online safety for consumers in the Nigerian communications industry.

This was disclosed in a statement on Thursday by the commission’s Head of Public Affairs, Nnnena Ukoha.

The framework, with likely implementation timeline by telecom licensees set for 2026, will address security challenges arising from the emerging technologies towards creating a more secure digital economy in Nigeria.

During the second phase of the cybersecurity framework development meeting with relevant stakeholders, hosted by the Commission in Abuja on Wednesday, following the initial meeting held earlier in the year, NCC’s Executive Commissioner, Technical Services (ECTS), Abraham Oshadami, stressed the need for a water-tight approach to addressing the sophistication of cyber threats in the industry.

Oshadami said given the increasing digitalization of services, the rapid growth of data exchange, and the sophisticated nature of modern cyber threats, the need for a robust, adaptive, and inclusive cybersecurity framework has never been more urgent.

According to him, as emerging technologies reshape the landscape, cybersecurity now extends beyond the traditional triad of confidentiality, integrity, and availability (CIA), adding that intensifying geopolitical tensions and increasingly sophisticated threats are heightening risks to critical infrastructure irrespective of whether they are built on interconnected devices or legacy systems.

“Both state and non-state actors are targeting essential sectors—including ours – through coordinated cyber and physical attacks. These attacks frequently target control systems and data integrity, underscoring the critical risks posed to operational technology (OT)—especially in our sector.

“As cyberthreats evolve, they endanger not only system performance but also human safety, amplifying the severity and consequences of disruptions to vital communications infrastructure. Cybersecurity now encompasses human safety and must address the real risk to people’s lives when a system is attacked or compromised,” he said.

While emphasizing the need to develop the framework, Oshadami said as telecommunications industry continues to serve as the backbone of Nigeria’s digital economy, its critical role in national development, economic transformation, and societal interaction makes it a strategic asset and unfortunately, a prime target for cyber threats.

Oshadami further explained that the second stakeholders meeting on the cybersecurity framework was to present the progress made since the initial meeting, including the refined framework based on stakeholder input; and to further validate key components, design principles, and implementation strategies of the proposed framework, among others.

The ECTS stated that as the national regulator, the NCC remains committed to an inclusive and consultative process, recognizing that sustainable cybersecurity outcomes can only be achieved through shared responsibility and strong public-private partnerships. “With your continued expertise, insight, and collaboration, we are confident that we can co-create a framework that not only secures our digital infrastructure but also fosters innovation, competitiveness, and long-term industry growth,” he said.

The presentation of the proposed framework by the Chief Executive Officer of CyberNover, the consultants to the Commission on the project, Dr. Kazeem Durodoye, further provided details of the framework to stakeholders at the invents, cutting across representatives of telecom licensees and government agencies in the digital economy ecosystem.

Meanwhile, the NCC’s Head of Cybersecurity and Internet Governance, Babagana Digima, while stating that the project is supported by the World Bank, commended all stakeholders for their input, saying while it was expected that the proposed framework will be finalized by end of third quarter of 2025, its implementation is expected to take off in early 2026.

The forum provided a platform to consolidate a shared understanding of the strategic relevance of the proposed cybersecurity framework in enhancing national cybersecurity preparedness and sector resilience; and review and refine the preliminary inputs gathered during the first engagement, incorporating technical perspectives and sector-specific concerns, among others.

Nigeria’s CSO demands justice for survivors of sexual violence, exploitation

A Civil Society Organisation (CSO), Talk Initiative

A Civil Society Organisation (CSO), Talk Initiative, has advocated justice, accountability, and protection for all survivors of sexual abuse and exploitation in Nigeria.

At a news conference in Abuja on Wednesday, Sefinatu Ahmed, the executive assistant of the organisation, called for urgent action to break the cycle of violence and secure justice for survivors.

The group said it was unfortunate that while women and girls were most affected, they remain victims, and the issue remains underreported and under-addressed due to stigma.

Citing the widely publicised case of Hadiza Baffa in the hands of former Minister of Special Duties, Kabiru Turaki (SAN), who she has repeatedly accused of sexual assault, exploitation, and assault.

Talk Initiative declared its solidarity with Baffa and other survivors and called on the government, security institutions, traditional authorities, and civil society groups to take immediate and meaningful action to end impunity.

The group stressed the need to demand justice for survivors and provide them with psychosocial, economic, and livelihood support to aid their recovery and reintegration.

The organisation said it is working with local actors to raise awareness about the root causes and impact of sexual and gender-based violence, and support survivors with counselling and rehabilitation.

“We are calling for independent oversight of the court proceedings, protection for the survivor, and accountability for the alleged abuse of power,’’ she said.

They emphasise that Hadiza’s case highlights the systemic silencing and emotional manipulation allegedly perpetrated by a former government official.

“We are urging women’s rights organizations, bar associations, and human rights defenders to support Hadiza, and view her case as a national emergency.

“The voices of survivors should echo loudly and must go hand-in-hand with dismantling the political and legal barriers that prevent justice from being served,’’ she said.

The CSO added that not enough attention was paid to pressing issues faced by women and girls by responsible authorities to unravel what often prevents them from speaking out,

“There are not enough protective, referral and support services for survivors, and the fact that perpetrators rarely face prosecution or conviction leaves survivors in a cycle of trauma, stigma and pain.’’

“Additionally, Hadiza’s case aims to set a precedent for similar cases, demonstrating that powerful individuals in Nigeria can abuse their power without facing consequences.’’

“Let’s act together to heal the scars and address the longstanding effects of SGBV by demanding justice for survivors wherever they may be in Nigeria, Africa, and the rest of the world,” she said.

Meanwhile, Baffa has continued to publicly accuse Turaki, a former minister, of alleged rape and intimidation, claiming the assault occurred in 2014 when she was a student at Baze University, Abuja.

She alleges that Turaki used his influence to silence her for over a decade and that he is the father of her child.

“He has been using his power and his status to threaten my life and frustrate my life with my child and denying the child,’’ she alleged.

She recounted that in September 2014, while she was a student of Baze University, Abuja, the minister sent his driver, identified simply as Shehu, to pick her up around 4 p.m.

She was then taken to a residence on Yadema Street, Asokoro, which she later described as “Han’s place.”

Hadiza said the following day, in the dead of night, the former minister gained access to the room where she was kept.

“He came around 1 a.m. in 2014. I don’t want to go into details because it’s not a fun thing to say. He raped me that night and asked me not to say anything. He left, and I was really scared to talk,” she alleged.

But the former minister has denied the allegation, insisting that the allegations were unfounded due to his innocence.

In a statement issued in Abuja on his behalf by his media aide, Lawal Umar, said Baffa’s narrative was being orchestrated by his political adversaries.

“He has refused to succumb to such tactics and remains committed to upholding his integrity, the rule of law, and the principles of justice,” Umar said in the statement.

He recalled that a competent court had earlier struck out Baffa’s suit against him following family interventions and an apology from Baffa’s end.

Narrating his side of the story, Turaki said Baffa was entrusted to his care by her mother when she relocated to Abuja because she was new to the city.

He said in the spirit of longstanding friendship with her family, he accepted the responsibility and treated her in a manner befitting that of a guardian.

He alleged that following her repeated involvement in financial scams and subsequent detentions where he was frequently called upon to intervene and settle matters.

Consequently, he reported her conduct to her mother and withdrew his guardianship.

“Aggrieved by this decision, Hadiza Baffa petitioned the police, making spurious allegations against me, including claims of rape, unlawful termination of pregnancy, and threats to life,” he claimed.

EPL: Ruud Gullit reveals who’s Man United’s problem

0

Netherlands legend Ruud Gullit has said that the problem with Manchester United resides in the club and not about the players.

According to Gullit, the problem with Manchester United is Manchester United and not the players.

He said the way the club is run since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson, a man who had so much authority on almost everything, is the problem.

The Red Devils again suffered an embarrassing defeat in the EFL Cup on Wednesday, crashing out of the league cup to Grimsby Town.

Gullit pointed out that players who left the club to some other clubs within this period ended up doing greatly at their new sides.

He used Scott McTominay [Napoli] Marcus Rashford [Aston Villa, Barcelona] and Antony [Real Betis] as examples.

The Red Devils ended last season on 15th place in the Premier League table a record low for the club.

Cristiano Ronaldo was the first player to express his disappointment at the level of decay at the club since after the reigns of Ferguson.

Players impress at other clubs but once they step into Old Trafford they struggle to make a positive impact.

Managers have come and gone yet no improvement as players walk away and turn their careers around at other clubs.

Speaking in Rondo, a talk show on Ziggo Sport, the Dutchman quoted by Transfer News Live, said, “Everyone who leaves Manchester United suddenly plays great at their new club.

“Scott McTominay at Napoli, Marcus Rashford at Aston Villa, and Antony at Real Betis. Manchester United is the problem, 100%.”
