Boycotts coastal fuel delivery for N75 per liter advantage—Dangote Refinery tells marketers

0

Dangote Refinery has urged petroleum marketers to stop using coastal fuel delivery services offered by oil marketing companies and instead adopt its direct gantry loading system, citing a cost advantage of about N75 per liter.

The 650,000-barrel-per-day refinery disclosed this in a statement on Thursday, warning that continued dependence on coastal delivery could drive petrol prices sharply higher.

According to the refinery, marketers who rely on coastal logistics risk pushing the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) close to N1,000 per liter due to additional transportation and handling costs. The company estimated that marketers incur about N1.75 trillion in logistics losses annually from coastal delivery, based on an average daily fuel consumption of approximately 50 million liters.

Dangote Refinery noted that coastal delivery, particularly within Lagos, creates avoidable expenses that have significant consequences for fuel pricing, consumer welfare, and overall economic stability.

“Reliance on coastal delivery, especially within Lagos, introduces avoidable costs with material implications for fuel pricing, consumer welfare, and overall economic well-being. Our assessment shows that coastal logistics can add around N75 per liter to the cost of petrol, which, if passed on to consumers, would push the pump price of PMS close to N1,000 per liter,” the statement said.

Meanwhile, check Nigerian Newssphere show that petrol prices in Abuja currently range between N839 and N905 per liter. While Dangote Refinery’s partner, MRS filling stations, sells petrol at N839 per liter, other major outlets—including the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), AA Rano, Shema, NIPCO, and Raniol—retail the product at prices between N875 and N905 per liter.

UCL: They’re unbeatable—Paul Merson on club to win trophy

0

Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson has tipped the Gunners to win the UEFA Champions League this season, insisting that no side left in the competition can beat them over two legs.

Merson made the bold prediction after the conclusion of the group stage, which saw Arsenal finish top of their group to secure automatic qualification for the Round of 16.

According to the ex-England international, Arsenal’s consistency and strength make them formidable opponents in knockout ties played over two matches.

“The Premier League may already be wrapped up, but Arsenal could win the Champions League because I don’t see a team that can beat them over two legs,” Merson told Sportskeeda. “The FA Cup is different. You’ve got 90 minutes and then straight to penalties, so anything can happen.”

Arsenal have enjoyed an impressive campaign under manager Mikel Arteta, delivering strong performances across all competitions and establishing themselves as serious contenders on the European

Naira slips against US dollar after two-day gain

0

The naira weakened against the United States dollar on Thursday at the official foreign exchange market, reversing part of the gains recorded over the previous two sessions.

Data from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) showed that the local currency closed at N1,366.06 per dollar on Thursday, compared with N1,358.28 on Wednesday.

This represents a day-on-day depreciation of N7.78 at the official window.

At the parallel market, however, the naira remained unchanged, exchanging at N1,460 per dollar on Thursday, the same rate recorded the previous day.

The latest movement comes amid relatively strong external buffers, as Nigeria’s foreign exchange reserves stood at $46.81 billion as of February 4, 2026, according to CBN figures.

The decline follows a notable rally earlier in the week, during which the naira appreciated by N32.08 against the dollar between Tuesday and Wednesday at the official market.

Transfer: Saudi Arabian Govt issues strong warning to Ronaldo over protest

0

The Saudi Pro League has issued a firm warning to Al Nassr captain Cristiano Ronaldo following reports of his frustration over the club’s lack of signings during the January transfer window.

Ronaldo, who joined Al Nassr in 2023, is reportedly unhappy that the club failed to strengthen the squad, a situation believed to have influenced his recent absence from one league match. Reports also suggest the Portuguese star is considering skipping Friday’s high-profile clash against Al-Ittihad.

Reacting to the situation, the Saudi Pro League on Thursday stressed that no player, regardless of status or reputation, can influence decisions beyond their own club.

In a statement, the league said all teams operate independently within the same financial and regulatory framework.

“The Saudi Pro League is built on a simple idea: every club works independently but follows the same rules,” the statement read.

It added that while Ronaldo’s desire to win is understandable, transfer and operational decisions remain the sole responsibility of individual clubs.

“Like any top player, he wants to win. But no one, not even a superstar, can decide what happens outside their own team,” the league said.

Why two Nigerians were arrested in India- Police

0

Indian police have arrested two Nigerian nationals for allegedly impersonating company directors on WhatsApp to defraud employees in Gurgaon.

Cybercrime operatives said the suspects posed as senior executives of Indian firms and pressured staff to make urgent fund transfers into bank accounts controlled by their syndicate.

According to The Times of India, the suspects were identified as Ojo Uyiosa and another Nigerian known as James. They were arrested last Saturday after investigators traced a suspicious phone number linked to the scam.

Police disclosed that Uyiosa entered India in 2014 on a student visa, while James arrived in 2023 on a tourist visa.

Investigations revealed that the duo, allegedly working with other Nigerian nationals, targeted employees by impersonating company directors and demanding immediate financial transfers. The proceeds were later shared among members of the group.

Authorities said about 10 lakh rupees—estimated at over ₦15 million—was transferred into a Bandhan Bank account linked to the operation. The account had reportedly been flagged in two previous cybercrime complaints.

Further findings suggested that the suspects were involved in multiple similar fraud cases using the same method.

A formal charge was filed, and both suspects were arraigned in court on Sunday, where they were remanded in police custody for three days.

The cybercrime unit confirmed that WhatsApp was the primary communication tool used to contact victims, while accomplices supplied bank accounts for receiving the funds. Two mobile phones and three SIM cards were recovered during the operation, as police continue investigations to identify other suspects, trace assets, and determine the full scale of the fraud.

The Madrid side continued their relentless display in the second half, with Antoine Griezmann and Thiago Almada adding further goals to complete the rout.

Atlético Madrid and Real Betis are set to meet again on Sunday in a LaLiga clash.

Nigerian govt announces six-week closure of Lagos–Ibadan Expressway

0

The Federal Government has announced a six-week partial closure of sections of the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway to allow for urgent repair works on critical bridge expansion joints.

The closure, announced by the Federal Ministry of Works, will affect the Kara Bridge, Magboro Bridge, and Arepo–Punch Bridge. According to the ministry, the move is necessary to resume rehabilitation works earlier suspended on the Lagos-bound section of Kara Bridge following complaints by motorists over persistent traffic congestion.

Speaking to journalists at Kara Bridge, the Ogun State Federal Controller of Works, Michael Komolafe, apologized to road users for the inconvenience and assured them that improved traffic management measures would be put in place to minimize disruption and ensure the safety of motorists during the repairs.

Komolafe explained that the expansion joints on the three bridges had significantly deteriorated, posing serious safety risks and contributing to traffic accidents. He said the Minister of Works, David Umahi, had ordered immediate intervention to prevent further incidents.

Providing details on the project, the General Manager of CBC Construction Company, Andy Duan, said repair works on the Lagos-bound sections of Magboro and Arepo–Punch bridges had been completed, with attention now shifting to the Ibadan-bound lanes.

“At Kara Bridge, half of the Lagos-bound section has been completed, and work will now focus on the remaining portion,” Duan said. He added that the expansion joints at the bridge were in extremely poor condition and had been a major cause of accidents.

Duan noted that construction equipment would be mobilized over the weekend, with full-scale work set to commence on Monday. He explained that the repairs would be carried out in phases, with half of each expansion joint expected to be completed within one week.

He also assured motorists that safety would remain a priority throughout the construction period, with barriers, warning signs, and lights installed to protect both road users and workers.

Meanwhile, the Lagos State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Kehinde Hamzat, urged motorists to remain patient and obey traffic rules during the repair period. He warned against driving against traffic, stressing that offenders would be sanctioned.

Hamzat said the repairs were critical, noting that failed expansion joints had created dangerous ditches on the bridges, especially at Kara Bridge, leading to several accidents.

Kwara, Katsina, Benue massacres: Nigeria killing now under Tinubu- Atiku

0

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has condemned the reported massacres in parts of Kwara, Katsina, and Benue states, describing the situation as a grim sign that Nigeria has turned into a “killing field” under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

In a statement posted on X, Atiku said the scale and frequency of the attacks expose a catastrophic failure of the state to safeguard the lives of citizens, particularly the most vulnerable.

He faulted what he described as routine condemnations issued after mass burials, insisting that such responses are no longer sufficient. According to him, Nigeria’s security approach must shift from being reactive to proactive, deliberate, and preventive.

The former vice president warned that communities that suffer repeated attacks should not be abandoned as open hunting grounds for criminals.

Expressing deep pain over the killings, Atiku urged the federal government, state governments, and local communities to work together decisively to halt the violence.

He stressed that the killing of even one Nigerian represents an unforgivable failure of governance.

“The reported massacres in parts of Kwara, Katsina, and Benue are a damning confirmation that Nigeria has descended into a killing field,” Atiku wrote. “Empty condemnations after mass burials are no longer acceptable. Security must be proactive, deliberate, and preventive, not reactive.”

Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, on Thursday met with U.S. President Donald Trump at the 74th Annual National Prayer Breakfast held on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C.

During his remarks at the event, President Trump publicly acknowledged Mrs. Tinubu, describing her as “a very respected woman,” and invited her to stand, drawing applause from the audience.

Trump also highlighted her dual role as a national leader and a Christian pastor, noting that she serves at what he described as the largest church in Nigeria.

“We’re honored to be joined today by the First Lady of Nigeria, a very respected woman,” Trump said.

Mrs. Tinubu attended the prayer breakfast alongside political leaders, religious figures, and business executives from different parts of the world.

In recent times, the United States government has expressed concerns over security and religious freedom issues in Nigeria.

Speaking further at the event, President Trump condemned the violence faced by Christians in the country, warning against attacks on religious communities.

“When Christians come under attack, they know they’re going to be attacked violently and viciously by President Trump. I know it’s not a nice thing to say, but that’s the way it is,” he stated.
