Former United States President Barack Obama has issued his first public message since a controversial video shared on President Donald Trump’s social media platform depicted him and his wife, Michelle Obama, in a derogatory manner.

In a post on X on Saturday, Obama avoided addressing the video, which triggered widespread condemnation and accusations of racism. Instead, Obama turned attention to sports, praising American athletes as the 2026 Winter Olympics begin.

“To all the athletes representing @TeamUSA: I’m so proud of you. Your talent and perseverance have brought you to this moment, and Michelle and I will be joining Americans from across the country cheering you on,” Obama wrote.

The video in question was posted on Trump’s Truth Social account on Friday morning but was later deleted following intense public backlash.

Meanwhile, Pastor Mark Burns, a US-based cleric and Trump ally, said the president denied personally posting the clip. According to Burns, Trump attributed the post to a member of his staff.

The naira closed the trading week at N1,366.19 per dollar at the official foreign exchange market, supported by a further increase in Nigeria’s external reserves to $46.91 billion.

Data from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) showed that the local currency depreciated slightly on Friday, slipping to N1,366.19 per dollar from N1,366.06 recorded in the previous session. This represents a marginal day-on-day loss of N0.13 against the US dollar.

Despite the slight daily decline, the naira posted a strong week-on-week performance at the official market, gaining N20.36.

At the parallel market, the currency also strengthened, appreciating by N10 to close the week at N1,450 per dollar.

The improved performance of the naira came amid a sustained rise in Nigeria’s external reserves, which stood at $46.91 billion as of February 5, 2026, according to data from the apex bank.

Lawmaker cries out as gunmen raid Abia Community, kill two

0

A member of the Abia State House of Assembly representing the Isuikwuato constituency, Lucky Udoka Nweke Johnson, has raised the alarm over rising insecurity in his constituency following the killing of two residents by suspected gunmen.

Johnson, who presented a matter of urgent public importance during plenary, expressed deep sorrow over the death of a 35-year-old constituent, Uche Simon, who was allegedly killed by unknown gunmen on January 28, 2026.

He disclosed that Simon was attacked while returning home with his motorcycle, which the assailants reportedly stole after killing him.

The lawmaker further revealed that a second incident occurred the following day, January 29, when a 19-year-old motor boy identified as Awba Abdulsalam was shot dead by gunmen at Nnunya Junction, also within Isuikwuato Local Government Area.

Johnson said security agencies, including the police and local vigilante groups, are currently working tirelessly to track down those responsible for the attacks.

He called for stronger collaboration between security agencies in Abia and neighboring Imo State, particularly around the Okigwe axis, to effectively tackle insecurity through improved intelligence sharing.

The legislator also urged the dismantling of informal settlements around Abia State University (ABSU) and Uta Farm, recommending that the same strategy earlier adopted at the Lokpa cattle market be replicated in his constituency.

In addition, Johnson advocated the installation of solar-powered surveillance cameras in strategic locations to enhance security, assuring residents of Isuikwuato that he remains committed to ensuring their safety.

In a communiqué issued after the meeting, JOHESU said the strike was suspended to allow for the implementation of the Terms of Settlement reached with the Federal Government.

Current Govs failed Nigerians, pushed Country ‘Next to Hell—Buhari’s Ex-Minister Dalung

0

Former Minister of Sports and Youth Development, Solomon Dalung, has criticized the current crop of state governors, describing them as failures who have pushed Nigeria “next to hell.”

Dalung said governance at the state level deteriorated significantly under the administration of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, particularly from 2015 onward.

He made the remarks during an interview on Trust TV, where he contrasted development in parts of Southern Nigeria with what he described as persistent leadership failures in the North.

According to him, Southern Nigeria has largely sustained the visions and policies laid down by its founding leaders. He noted that free education introduced by Chief Obafemi Awolowo remains a feature in the South-West, while economic principles associated with Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe are still evident in the South-East.

“The South-East has failures like the North, but the difference is the economic base and the enterprise of the people,” Dalung said, adding that the South-South and South-West have fared better, with the South-West standing out for adhering to the ideals of its founding fathers.

Turning to the North, Dalung said the region had a strong ideological foundation laid by Sir Ahmadu Bello, the Sardauna of Sokoto, but lamented that only a few governors in the Fourth Republic had governed in line with that vision.

He acknowledged that many governors in the early years of the Fourth Republic performed creditably, citing former Kaduna State governor Ahmed Makarfi and the late former Katsina State governor Umaru Musa Yar’Adua as examples.

However, Dalung said performance declined sharply with subsequent administrations. While he noted that a few governors elected in 2007, including Sule Lamido and Ibrahim Shema, still delivered meaningful governance, he described the set of governors that emerged from 2015 as a “disaster.”

“The third set was a disaster from 2015; they performed too poorly. I was an active participant in the creation of the tsunami that brought them,” he said. “This current set we have has sent us next to hell.”

BREAKING: Suspected Herdsmen attack Benue community, kidnap women, others

Suspected armed herdsmen on Friday afternoon attacked Anwase Market in Mbaikyor, Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State, abducting several market women and setting the market on fire.

Eyewitnesses said the assailants stormed the community from a nearby mountain, firing shots into the air to create panic before setting market stalls ablaze and forcefully taking away some women traders.

The Nigerian Newssphere learned that the attackers fled with their victims toward the mountainous area before security operatives arrived at the scene.

A resident told our correspondent that the market had already been engulfed by flames before locals could organize any resistance, noting that traders ran in different directions to escape the attack.

Efforts to reach the Benue State Police Public Relations Officer for comments were unsuccessful, as calls and messages were not returned at the time of filing this report.

Scam probe: Police explain reason for returning N32m to victim of romance fraud

0

The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the return of $23,000—about N32 million—recovered from a Nigerian suspect accused of running an international online romance scam to the victim in the Cayman Islands.

In a statement on Friday, police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin said the funds were recovered by the INTERPOL National Central Bureau (NCB), Abuja, after a formal request from the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service. The request sought Nigeria’s assistance in investigating the activities of Achufusi Obioma Ikenna.

Hundeyin said INTERPOL NCB Abuja operatives conducted covert, intelligence-led investigations that led to Ikenna’s arrest and the recovery of the stolen money.

Following the completion of all legal and administrative processes, the recovered funds were officially handed over to the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service through the British High Commission in Abuja. The handover was facilitated by the commission’s representative, Mr. Shaun McLeary, for onward transmission to the victim.

Police said Ikenna will be arraigned in court at the conclusion of ongoing investigations.

The Force Public Relations Officer described the recovery and repatriation of the funds as a clear demonstration of the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to intelligence-driven policing, effective international collaboration, and the fight against cross-border cybercrime.

“The Force remains resolute in ensuring that proceeds of crime are traced, recovered, and returned to victims, while perpetrators are identified and brought to justice in line with the law and international best practices,” the statement added.

2026 Convention: APC drops Gov Uzodinma as chairman, appoints Masari

0

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has reshuffled the leadership of its 2026 National Convention Central Coordination Committee, naming former Katsina State Governor Aminu Bello Masari as the new chairman.

Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, who was earlier announced as chairman of the committee, has been reassigned to the position of treasurer.

The ruling party also expanded the membership of the committee from 73 to 90 members, a move aimed at accommodating additional party stakeholders.

Among the newly appointed members are Senator Barry Mpigi and other notable APC chieftains.

The APC explained that the changes were part of a review of the 2026 National Convention Central Coordination Committee, undertaken to address zoning considerations and other strategic party needs.

Boycotts coastal fuel delivery for N75 per liter advantage—Dangote Refinery tells marketers

0

Dangote Refinery has urged petroleum marketers to stop using coastal fuel delivery services offered by oil marketing companies and instead adopt its direct gantry loading system, citing a cost advantage of about N75 per liter.

The 650,000-barrel-per-day refinery disclosed this in a statement on Thursday, warning that continued dependence on coastal delivery could drive petrol prices sharply higher.

According to the refinery, marketers who rely on coastal logistics risk pushing the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) close to N1,000 per liter due to additional transportation and handling costs. The company estimated that marketers incur about N1.75 trillion in logistics losses annually from coastal delivery, based on an average daily fuel consumption of approximately 50 million liters.

Dangote Refinery noted that coastal delivery, particularly within Lagos, creates avoidable expenses that have significant consequences for fuel pricing, consumer welfare, and overall economic stability.

“Reliance on coastal delivery, especially within Lagos, introduces avoidable costs with material implications for fuel pricing, consumer welfare, and overall economic well-being. Our assessment shows that coastal logistics can add around N75 per liter to the cost of petrol, which, if passed on to consumers, would push the pump price of PMS close to N1,000 per liter,” the statement said.

Meanwhile, check Nigerian Newssphere show that petrol prices in Abuja currently range between N839 and N905 per liter. While Dangote Refinery’s partner, MRS filling stations, sells petrol at N839 per liter, other major outlets—including the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), AA Rano, Shema, NIPCO, and Raniol—retail the product at prices between N875 and N905 per liter.
