Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has condemned the reported massacres in parts of Kwara, Katsina, and Benue states, describing the situation as a grim sign that Nigeria has turned into a “killing field” under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
In a statement posted on X, Atiku said the scale and frequency of the attacks expose a catastrophic failure of the state to safeguard the lives of citizens, particularly the most vulnerable.
He faulted what he described as routine condemnations issued after mass burials, insisting that such responses are no longer sufficient. According to him, Nigeria’s security approach must shift from being reactive to proactive, deliberate, and preventive.
The former vice president warned that communities that suffer repeated attacks should not be abandoned as open hunting grounds for criminals.
Expressing deep pain over the killings, Atiku urged the federal government, state governments, and local communities to work together decisively to halt the violence.
He stressed that the killing of even one Nigerian represents an unforgivable failure of governance.
“The reported massacres in parts of Kwara, Katsina, and Benue are a damning confirmation that Nigeria has descended into a killing field,” Atiku wrote. “Empty condemnations after mass burials are no longer acceptable. Security must be proactive, deliberate, and preventive, not reactive.”
