El-Rufai abducted me over deleted tweet—Maikori

0

Founder and Chairman of Chocolate City Entertainment, Audu Maikori, has accused former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai of persecuting him over a tweet he admitted was wrong and later deleted.

Maikori made the allegation on Monday while fielding questions during an interview on Prime Time, a program on Arise Television.

He alleged that the former governor organized his abduction, stressing that such actions should not be carried out by a sitting governor.

“El-Rufai persecuted me for a wrong tweet I acknowledged and took down. He organized for me to be abducted,” Maikori said.

“A governor shouldn’t do the job of the police. My driver confessed he had lied about the information he gave me.

“I was let go by the police, and the next weekend, El-Rufai was trying to link my tweet with the possible death of 7 people,” he added.

Maikori distinguished between prosecution and persecution, insisting that what he and others experienced under El-Rufai amounted to persecution rather than lawful prosecution.

The Nigerian naira recorded a notable recovery against the United States dollar on Monday, appreciating across both the official and parallel foreign exchange markets.

Data from the Central Bank of Nigeria showed that the naira strengthened to N1,347.78 per dollar, improving from the N1,355.42 recorded on Friday. This represents a gain of N7.64 within a single trading session.

Meanwhile, the country’s external reserves climbed to $47.81 billion as of February 12, 2026, reflecting improved foreign exchange liquidity.

A wave of grief has swept through Umuahia, the Abia State capital, following a devastating road accident that claimed the lives of at least 14 people returning from a traditional marriage and wedding ceremony.

The victims were travelling back from a ceremony in Enugu on Saturday evening when the coaster bus conveying them collided head-on with a trailer along the Enugu–Port Harcourt Expressway near the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital in Ozalla.

Eyewitnesses said the crash occurred around 6:00 p.m., close to the popular 4-Corner Junction. Fourteen passengers were reportedly killed on the spot, while others later died from injuries sustained in the collision. Several survivors remain hospitalized in Umuahia, battling for their lives.

Most of the deceased were traders in foodstuffs at Bonny Street, located by Owerri Road near Isi Gate in Umuahia. Among them was the groom, Mr. MacDonald Okechukwu, an indigene of Orlu in Imo State. His bride is from Amagunze in Nkanu, Enugu State, where the wedding ceremonies had just been concluded before the tragic journey.

On Monday, Bonny Street, usually a busy commercial hub, was subdued as shops remained closed and sympathizers gathered to console bereaved families.

Chairman of the Bonny Street Traders Association, Mr. James Edeh, described the incident as horrific. He said initial accounts from the trailer driver alleged that the bus was driving against traffic while the trailer was attempting to overtake a tricycle, resulting in the fatal collision.

According to him, 12 bodies were evacuated from the scene, including eight traders, two relatives of the groom, and two other guests.

Reacting to the incident, the Abia State Governor, through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ferdinand Ekeoma, expressed deep sorrow and directed relevant authorities to identify the victims. The governor also instructed the Commissioner for Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection to coordinate support for the injured and provide assistance to families of the deceased.

The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has commenced an investigation into the Chinese data processing operations of e-commerce platform Temu over suspected violations of the Nigeria Data Protection (NDP) Act.

The directive was issued by the NDPC’s National Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer, Vincent Olatunji, who ordered an immediate review of the company’s activities.

The statement was signed by Babatunde Bamigboye, Head of Legal, Enforcement, and Regulations at the NDPC.

According to the Commission, the probe was prompted by concerns relating to alleged online surveillance practices involving personal data processing, as well as issues surrounding accountability, data minimization, transparency, duty of care, and cross-border data transfers.

Preliminary findings suggest that Temu processes the personal information of approximately 12.7 million data subjects in Nigeria and records about 70 million daily active users globally.

The National Commissioner also cautioned data processors handling information on behalf of data controllers to ensure strict compliance with the NDP Act. He warned that processors who fail to verify their clients’ adherence to the law could face liability under the Act.

0

The United States government has imposed sanctions on eight Nigerians over alleged ties to Boko Haram and the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), resulting in the freezing of their assets and properties under US jurisdiction.

The sanctions were detailed in a 3,000-page document released on February 10 by the Office of Foreign Assets Control, an agency of the United States Department of the Treasury.

The publication, titled the “Specially Designated Nationals and Blocked Persons List” (SDN List), identifies individuals and entities subject to US sanctions. In addition to terrorism-related designations, the document also includes names of persons sanctioned for cybercrime and other security-related offenses.

The development follows recommendations by the United States Congress calling for visa restrictions and asset freezes against individuals and groups accused of religious freedom violations and persecution of Christians in Nigeria. Last year, US President Donald Trump designated Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern.

Those listed are subject to asset freezes under Executive Order 13224, which targets individuals linked to terrorism.

Among the Nigerians named is Salih Yusuf Adamu, also known as Salihu Yusuf, born August 23, 1990. He was identified as having links to Boko Haram. Yusuf was among six Nigerians convicted in 2022 in the United Arab Emirates for setting up a Boko Haram cell to generate funds for insurgents in Nigeria. The group was found guilty of attempting to transfer $782,000 from Dubai to Nigeria.

Babestan Oluwole Ademulero, born March 4, 1953, was also designated under terrorism-related sanctions. He was listed under several aliases, including Wole A. Babestan and Olatunde Irewole Shofeso.

Another individual, Abu Abdullah ibn Umar Al-Barnawi, also known as Ba Idrisa and reportedly born between 1989 and 1994 in Maiduguri, Borno State, was flagged under terrorism-related sanctions.

Abu Musab Al-Barnawi, also referred to as Habib Yusuf and identified as a Boko Haram leader, was likewise included, with varying birth years recorded between 1990 and 1995.

Nnamdi Orson Benson, born March 21, 1987, was designated under CYBER2 sanctions. He was reported to be a Nigerian passport holder and was listed in connection with cyber-related offenses.

NSA: Nigerian Govt to arraign El-Rufai over alleged Ribadu’s phone tapping

0

There plans to arraign former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, before the Federal High Court of Nigeria in Abuja over allegations that he unlawfully intercepted the phone communications of the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu.

Court documents dated February 16, 2026, indicate that El-Rufai is facing a three-count charge.

In the first count, the former governor was accused of admitting during a February 13 appearance on Arise TV’s Prime Time program that he and his associates intercepted the NSA’s communications, an act said to contravene Section 12(1) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Amendment Act, 2024.

The second count alleges that El-Rufai knowingly associated with individuals involved in the unlawful interception without reporting them to relevant security agencies, contrary to Section 27(b) of the same Act.

The third charge accuses him of deploying technical devices or systems in a manner that allegedly undermined public safety and national security by intercepting the NSA’s communications, an offense under Section 131(2) of the Nigerian Communications Act 2003.

The charges were instituted by legal representatives of the Department of State Services, including M.E. Ernest, O.M. Owan, U.M. Bulla, C.S. Eze, and E.G. Orubor.

The court is expected to commence proceedings in the matter in the coming days as the government advances its prosecution of the former governor.
