The crescent marking the beginning of Ramadan 1447 AH has been sighted in Saudi Arabia, confirming the commencement of the holy month.

Consequently, Wednesday, February 18, 2026, will be observed as the first day of Ramadan.

In a statement, the Royal Court said, “The Lunar Crescents Department (Da’irat al-Ahillah) at the Supreme Court held a session on the evening of Tuesday, the 29th of Sha‘ban, 1447 AH—according to the Umm al-Qura calendar—corresponding to 17/2/2026, to review what had been received regarding the sighting of the crescent of the blessed month of Ramadan for this year, 1447 AH.”

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs is yet to declare Ramadan in Nigeria as of filing this report.

‘APC ole’—Moment Rep members walked out of plenary over e-transmission of election results [Video]

Members of the House of Representatives on Tuesday staged a walkout during plenary, chanting “APC ole,” after the chamber adopted Clause 60(3) of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill.

The adopted clause provides for both real-time electronic transmission and manual transmission of election results.

The controversy began when Rep. Bamidele Salam moved a motion seeking to delete the provision that allows manual transmission of results. He argued that retaining manual transmission could undermine the credibility of the electoral process and slow Nigeria’s technological advancement in conducting elections.

The motion was seconded by Rep. Kingsley Chinda but was defeated after the “nays” prevailed in a voice vote.

The outcome sparked tension in the chamber, resulting in heated exchanges among lawmakers.

Earlier, Nigerian Newssphere reported that the Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas, called for an executive session in a bid to address the disagreement. However, the closed-door meeting failed to resolve the concerns raised by aggrieved members.

When the plenary resumed, the situation worsened as some lawmakers stood up and obstructed the Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kalu, from continuing proceedings.

The protesting members eventually walked out of the chamber, reiterating their opposition to Clause 60(3), which deals with the electronic transmission of election results.

A video of the incident has since surfaced online.

Outrage over Naira-spraying video at Tinubu’s Adamawa Visit[Video]

President Tinbu

A video showing a woman spraying naira notes during President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s visit to Adamawa State has sparked outrage on social media, with many Nigerians accusing authorities of selectively enforcing laws against naira mutilation.

The incident occurred while popular Hausa musician Dauda Kahutu Rarara was performing his song, “Omo Ologo” (Child of Glory), in honor of the president.

In the widely circulated clip, an unidentified woman dressed in All Progressives Congress (APC) attire is seen approaching the stage and spraying a few naira notes as the performance continued. She was shortly cautioned by another woman standing nearby. However, the brief act quickly drew attention online after the video spread across social media platforms.

Several users on X criticized what they described as unequal application of the law.

One user, @Clement C Mbanugo, wrote, “I blame Nigerians for the arrogance of EFCC bandits. If those idiots come to arrest anybody in your area, make sure they don’t go back with their complete teeth.”

Another user, @Nigeria is my only country, posted, “The law is meant for only the people that are not supporting APC. Mtcheeeew.”

@King Dave 3 commented, “It’s only in Nigeria spraying money is a crime, but you’re free to spray in front of President Tinubu. Everything is fine if you’re an APC member.”

Similarly, @CRT ekeh wrote, “Dem no go see this one o,” while @CHUKWUEBUKA added, “The law no be for everybody.”

Some commenters compared the incident to previous cases where individuals were reportedly arrested or prosecuted for naira abuse. One user, @PETER OBI’s TRUMPETER, claimed that while the woman in the video was merely cautioned, others had faced harsher consequences for similar acts.

@Emmanuel Benjamin argued that the reaction might have been different if supporters of opposition figures were involved, while @BIGI simply stated, “Make them go arrest him.”

The incident has revived discussions about enforcement of the Central Bank of Nigeria’s regulations on naira mutilation. In 2024, transgender socialite Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, was sentenced to six months in prison for naira mutilation

BREAKING: Uproar in Reps as Nigerian Lawmakers clash over Electoral Act Amendment

House of reps

Proceedings in the House of Representatives were thrown into disarray on Tuesday following sharp disagreements among lawmakers over a motion to rescind the passage of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill.

The tension began during plenary when Francis Waive, Chairman of the House Committee on Rules and Business, moved a motion seeking to reverse the chamber’s earlier decision on the bill, which was passed on December 23, 2025.

Then the Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas, put the motion to a voice vote. Although the “nays” appeared louder than the “ayes,” the Speaker ruled in favor of the nays.

The announcement sparked immediate protests, with several lawmakers shouting in objection to the ruling. In a bid to restore order, Abbas called for an executive session, but the proposal was rejected by members.

Despite the resistance, the Speaker proceeded to move the House into an executive session.

It would be recalled that when the green chamber passed the amendment to the Electoral Act in December, it adopted a provision mandating the real-time transmission of election results to the Independent National Electoral Commission Result Viewing Portal (IReV).

0

Jesse Jackson, one of the most prominent leaders of the United States civil rights movement in the 1960s, has died at the age of 84.

He passed away peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday morning, surrounded by family and friends, according to a statement released by his family.

“It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of civil rights leader and founder of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, the Honorable Reverend Jesse Louis Jackson, Sr.,” the family said.

“He died peacefully on Tuesday morning, surrounded by his family.

“His unwavering commitment to justice, equality, and human rights helped shape a global movement for freedom and dignity.

“A tireless change agent, he elevated the voices of the voiceless from his presidential campaigns in the 1980s to mobilizing millions to register to vote—leaving an indelible mark on history.”

Born Jesse Louis Jackson (né Burns) on October 8, 1941, he remained an influential civil rights advocate for more than seven decades.

Jackson served as a shadow delegate and later as a shadow senator for the District of Columbia from 1991 to 1997. He was the father of U.S. Representative Jonathan Jackson and former U.S. Representative Jesse Jackson Jr.

A towering figure in American civil rights history, Jackson worked on the frontlines of the struggle for racial equality alongside Martin Luther King Jr. during the 1960s.

Beginning as a young protégé of King, he went on to build a decades-long career as an activist, politician, and ordained Baptist minister, emerging as one of the most recognizable voices for social justice in the United States.

He twice sought the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination, launching historic campaigns in 1984 and 1988 that broadened political participation and mobilized millions of new voters.

Jackson’s legacy endures through his lifelong advocacy, political achievements, and the institutions he established to advance equality and human rights.

Phone tapping: El-Rufai made his biggest political mistakes—Prof Ikechukwu

0

Prof. Okey Ikechukwu, Executive Director of Specs Development Academy, has described recent remarks by former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, as one of the gravest political missteps of his career in public service.

Speaking on The Morning Show on Arise Television on Tuesday, Ikechukwu said El-Rufai’s comments were not speculative but categorical, particularly his claim that the communication lines of the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) were tapped.

He noted that El-Rufai went further to imply that such capabilities were not exclusive to the government.

Ikechukwu stressed that breaching the privacy of a public officeholder, especially where confidential information is concerned, constitutes a serious violation and an intrusion into national security infrastructure.

He cautioned that the issue should not be taken lightly, adding that Nigeria and neighboring countries grappling with terrorism would view such statements with concern.

Ikechukwu said:

“Well, the statements of Nasir El-Rufai are not gestural, or if you like, he wasn’t guessing. He made very specific statements declaring that the communication lines of the NSA are, if you like, tapped.

“He declared even more convincingly, in case you’re doubting him, it’s not only the government that has the capacity to do that.

“You have no right to violate anybody’s privacy if somebody is holding a public office. And you violating the privacy of confidential information or information access to that office is also a violation of privacy. On top of that, it is an encroachment on the infrastructure of national security.

“I may be mistaken, but this seems to me to be one of El-Rufai’s biggest political mistakes in his career as a public officer.

“It’s a matter of national security. Remember there are four countries under pressure from Boko Haram and terrorists—Nigeria, Benin, Niger, and Chad. Those countries will be interested in his statement.

“So this is a frightening statement that has to be treated with every seriousness. It was intended to get political mileage. Well, he has gotten more mileage than they can handle. I don’t see anybody joking with this.”

Line tapping: ‘Nigerians will now talk about shooting President’—Ogala wants El-Rufai punished

0

A senior advocate of Nigeria, Babatunde Ogala, has warned that failure to hold former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai accountable for admitting to tapping the phone of the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, could send the wrong message to the public.

Ogala cautioned, “Anyone might wake up one day and appear on national TV to say they want to shoot the president if nothing is done about El-Rufai.”

Speaking during an interview on Arise News, the senior lawyer said El-Rufai’s admission goes beyond the Cybercrimes Act. He noted, “In my opinion, if someone is tapping into communications, invading privacy, or listening in through any method other than what’s allowed by law, it goes beyond the Cyber Crimes Act. It might also break parts of the Data Protection Act.”

He stressed that the seriousness of the matter is not just because the target was the National Security Adviser, adding, “Let’s not just imagine that it’s wrong because it’s the National Security Adviser’s phone, and someone tapping my line or yours breaks the law, and it’s even worse when it’s the National Security Adviser’s phone.”

On the legal process, Ogala explained, “In a criminal case, it’s up to the prosecution to show that the person is guilty with no doubt left. So far today, what we’ve just heard is that charges have been filed. Three charges related to cyber crimes and the Nigerian Communications Act. I haven’t seen any evidence to know what’s inside, but it’s safe to assume the prosecution team did their research before filing these charges.”

He also drew comparisons with other countries to highlight the seriousness of public admissions of criminal acts: “I can’t picture for a moment in that country, where they claim freedom is almost complete, how anyone could say anything they want. I don’t think any American will wake up tomorrow and say we have connected with the official position of the Pentagon and expect the country to ignore it. He would definitely be invited to come and explain things, and even if it’s not clear whether any investigations have taken place, there’s an assumption that some kind of investigation might have happened. And this is an admission on national TV. It’s like me going into a market or Yaba Bus Stop and saying, ‘I just killed someone. ‘ Then you would think that, because you think that, since I have freedom of speech, the police should first check if I actually did the crime before arresting me? When I went to the bus stop to confess a terrible crime?”

He concluded with a warning about separating politics from criminal behavior: “If this is allowed to happen, someone else might say on national TV, ‘I’m going to shoot the President tomorrow. ‘ And if that kind of talk was really political, then I think it would look like taking freedom too far.”

‘Babajide Sanwo-Olu Steps Aside’ as Lagos Governor

0

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Monday symbolically transferred leadership of the state for a day to 14-year-old Esther Etiyemonu, winner of the 2025/2026 Lagos State Spelling Bee Competition.

Etiyemonu, an SSS II student of Lagos State Senior Model College, Igbookuta, Imota, in Ikorodu Division, emerged overall winner at the 21st edition of the annual competition, which featured students from public secondary schools across the state.

The symbolic handover ceremony was held at the State House in Marina, where the student was received by the governor and members of her ceremonial cabinet. Dorcas Awoyemi of Ikosi Senior High School served as One-Day Deputy Governor, while Salami Jumain Olaide of Angus Memorial Senior High School, Yaba, took on the role of One-Day Secretary to the State Government. The students attended the event alongside their parents and teachers.

During a brief State Executive Council session she presided over, Etiyemonu described the Spelling Bee as a significant educational initiative introduced by former Lagos First Lady and current First Lady of Nigeria, Oluremi Tinubu. She said the program has consistently promoted academic excellence, confidence, and leadership among public school students.

She also praised the Sanwo-Olu administration for strides recorded in the education sector, citing teacher recruitment, establishment of technical colleges, expansion of digital skills programs, upgrades of tertiary institutions, staff housing projects, and the rehabilitation of secondary school libraries.

The One-Day Governor further pointed to improvements in transportation, including ongoing road reconstruction projects and the Lagos Rail Mass Transit Red and Blue Lines, as well as strengthened security measures across the state.

In his remarks, Sanwo-Olu said Etiyemonu’s achievement highlights the benefits of sustained investment in public education, particularly in model colleges. He noted that improved performance in external examinations such as WASSCE and NECO reflects deliberate efforts to enhance infrastructure, teacher welfare, and the learning environment.

The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to education, promising continued investment in school facilities, healthcare access, road networks connecting schools, modern learning tools, and security around educational institutions. He also assured that the Lagos State Spelling Bee Competition would remain a priority, describing it as a long-standing initiative that continues to inspire academic excellence and leadership among young people in the state.

“Where does he ‘play’?”—NBA star Edwards throws jibe at Ronaldo

0

Anthony Edwards has taken a playful swipe at Portuguese forward Cristiano Ronaldo, claiming he does not know the football icon.

Edwards, widely known as Ant-Man, made the remark on Sunday at the Intuit Dome in Inglewood, California, while wearing Lionel Messi’s Argentina national team jersey.

The 24-year-old guard featured in the NBA All-Star Game, where he was named Most Valuable Player after leading the USA Stars to a 47–21 victory over the USA Stripes.

When asked if he was familiar with Ronaldo, Edwards jokingly responded that he did not know who he was and questioned where he plays.

Cristiano Ronaldo currently plays for Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr, while Messi represents Major League Soccer side Inter Miami in the United States.

Ronaldo and Messi have shared 13 Ballon d’Or titles between them and are widely regarded as two of the greatest players in football history.

LaLiga: Hansi Flick explains why Barcelona lost to Girona

0

FC Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has explained why his side suffered a 2-1 defeat to Girona FC in Monday’s La Liga clash.

Flick watched his team slump to defeat on the road, with a goal from Pau Cubarsí proving insufficient to secure a result for the Catalan side.

In his post-match remarks, the German coach admitted that Barcelona failed to deliver a solid performance, pointing particularly to defensive lapses. He noted that the team struggled in transition and were often out of position, making it difficult to cope with Girona’s attacking threat.

Flick stressed that his players needed greater control of the game and must cut out costly errors. Although he acknowledged that Barcelona created more chances in the first half, he insisted that the team must display stronger determination to win such encounters. He also made it clear that he would not offer excuses for the defeat, emphasizing the need for improvement.

“We defended very poorly, especially in transition. We weren’t well-positioned and struggled to withstand Girona’s attacks,” Flick said.

“We needed more control and fewer mistakes. In the first half, we had more chances, but we have to show the hunger to win these matches.”

“We did not play well, and I don’t want excuses, but we have to play better.”

The result leaves Barcelona two points behind leaders Real Madrid in the league standings. Flick’s men will look to bounce back when they take on Levante UD in their next fixture this weekend.
