0

Renowned human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), and his son, popular Nigerian musician Folarin Falana, widely known as Falz, joined protesters in Lagos on Friday as demonstrations against hardship, insecurity and poor governance continued across the country.

The protesters gathered at the Ikeja Underbridge area of Lagos, voicing concerns over the worsening economic situation and rising insecurity in Nigeria.

Carrying placards with various inscriptions, the demonstrators called on the government to take urgent steps to address the country’s security challenges and improve citizens’ living conditions. They lamented that many Nigerians continue to suffer the consequences of policies they described as unfavourable.

Some of the messages displayed on the placards included: “No Democracy Without Security,” “End Insecurity and Kidnapping,” “End Bad Governance,” and “Free All Abducted Children, Teachers, Farmers.”

The protest comes amid growing public concern over the increasing cases of kidnapping, banditry and violent attacks in different parts of the country.

President Bola Tinubu had earlier addressed the nation, assuring Nigerians that his administration remains committed to tackling the security challenges facing the country.

The President, who is expected to seek re-election in 2027, pledged that Nigeria would overcome its security problems and restore peace across affected communities.

Xenophobia: ‘South Africans Must Go’ protest storms MTN Headquaters in Ghana

A group identified as the “Must Go” campaign on Thursday staged a peaceful protest at the headquarters of MTN Ghana in Accra, amid growing outrage over the recent wave of xenophobic attacks in South Africa.

The demonstration has further heightened tensions as concerns mount across several African countries over the safety of their citizens residing in South Africa.

In a video circulating on social media, protesters were heard demanding that MTN and other South African-owned companies cease operations in Ghana.

The demonstrators carried placards bearing inscriptions such as “Ghanaian Lives Matter” while chanting slogans as they marched to the telecommunications firm’s premises.

The protest comes weeks after Ghana and other African nations, including Nigeria, began evacuating their citizens from South Africa following escalating tensions and attacks.

In Nigeria, the first batch of evacuees arrived on Thursday and were received by government officials, including the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Sola Enikanolaiye.

Nollywood actress Doris Ogala has announced that a Lagos State High Court has dismissed the case filed against her by the founder of Grace Nation Bible Ministry, Chris Okafor.

Recalls that Okafor had instituted legal action against the actress over allegations of cyberbullying and harassment, publication of personal materials, attempted extortion, and dissemination of false information.

In an update shared on her Instagram page on Thursday, Ogala revealed that the court had thrown out the case.

Reacting to the development, the actress mocked the cleric while celebrating the court’s decision with laughing emojis.

She wrote: “Yes ooo who says God no day. The court dismissed Chris Okafor’s case against me. Hahaha. Now it’s war. Hahaha. JESUS is the ultimate ooo. Tori dey ooo.”

The legal dispute stemmed from allegations made by Ogala in December 2025. The actress, who was reportedly in a relationship with the cleric, publicly accused him of abandoning her for a younger woman despite allegedly promising to marry her.

BREAKING: Nigeria’s House of Reps Approves State Police Bill

0

The House of Representatives has approved the State Police Bill, a significant step towards decentralising Nigeria’s policing structure.

The bill received overwhelming support during plenary on Thursday, with 289 lawmakers voting in favour of its passage. The session was presided over by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas.

The lower chamber dedicated its sitting to consideration of the proposed legislation amid growing security concerns across the country, including incidents of killings, kidnappings and banditry.

Proceedings were briefly disrupted when a lawmaker from Kaduna State, Bashir Zubairu, raised a point of order, arguing that members had not been given enough time to study the report submitted by the House Committee on Constitution Review.

Speaking after being recognised by the Speaker, Zubairu said: “Mr Speaker, this document was only made available to lawmakers in the chambers, and we are yet to go through it. We cannot do justice to it because we have not gone through it.”

However, Speaker Abbas ruled the objection out of order and directed that deliberations continue.

As the Speaker guided lawmakers through the provisions of the bill, some members repeatedly raised “Point of Order,” but their interventions were not entertained.

Before the voting process began, Abbas informed lawmakers that the electronic voting system was not functional and that voting would be determined using attendance records.

Out of the 290 lawmakers present, 289 voted in support of the establishment of state police, while only one member opposed the proposal. Speaker Abbas did not take part in the vote.

Ugochinyere: Nigeria’s House of Reps announces Agbedi as Minority Leader

The House of Representatives has announced Bayelsa lawmaker Fred Agbedi as the new Minority Leader.

Speaker Abbas Tajudeen made the announcement on Thursday shortly after the commencement of plenary.

The House also named Abdusamad Dasuki, a lawmaker from Sokoto State, as Deputy Minority Leader, while Mansur Manu Soro from Bauchi State was appointed Minority Chief Whip.

Agbedi is a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dasuki represents the African Democratic Congress (ADC), while Soro belongs to the Allied Peoples Movement (APM).

The appointments bring to an end weeks of consultations, negotiations and intense lobbying among opposition lawmakers over the composition of the minority leadership in the House.

The development followed a protest by some lawmakers shortly before the announcement. About nine members, alongside the representative of Ideato North/Ideato South Federal Constituency of Imo State, Ikenga Ugochinyere, stormed the chamber chanting “No announcement, No sitting” in protest over the delay in naming the Minority Leader.

Among those backing Ugochinyere for the position were Jesse Okey-Joe from Lagos State, Aliyu Mustapha from Kaduna State, Afam Ogene from Anambra State and Aliyu Misau from Bauchi State.

The announcement has now settled the leadership contest and formally constituted the minority leadership team in the House of Representatives.

BREAKING: Ugochinyere: G-60 caucus protests House leadership over Minority Leader position

Members of the G-60 Minority Caucus in the House of Representatives on Thursday staged a protest during plenary over what they described as the leadership’s failure to address the controversy surrounding the position of Minority Leader.

The protest followed moves that could prevent the member representing Ideato North/South Federal Constituency, Hon. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, from emerging as Minority Leader.

The development comes a day after the House adopted a resolution barring first-term lawmakers from occupying principal officer positions.

The decision sparked opposition from members of the G-60 caucus, who stormed the Green Chamber during plenary and demanded that the House leadership address the issue.

The lawmakers warned that parliamentary proceedings could be disrupted if the leadership fails to resolve the crisis surrounding the minority leadership positions.

Reports indicate that the group, led by Ugochinyere, has endorsed the member representing Sagbama/Ekeremor Federal Constituency of Bayelsa State, Fred Agbedi, for the position of Minority Leader, while backing Abdussamad Dasuki as Deputy Minority Leader.

Insecurity: VeryDarkMan Leads ‘Tinubu must go’ Protest in Abuja

0

Popular social media critic, Martins Vincent Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), on Wednesday night led a mass protest in Abuja over the worsening security situation across Nigeria.

VDM, who returned to Nigeria from China at about 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, joined members of the Ratel Movement in a protest march to the Nigerian Air Force Base in Abuja, where they demonstrated against the growing insecurity in the country.

In a video circulating on social media, protesters were heard chanting, “Tinubu must go, APC must go, bandits must go, terrorists must go,” as they marched towards the Air Force Base.

VDM, a vocal critic of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, has repeatedly expressed concerns over the recent increase in kidnappings and killings in several parts of the country.

While in China, the activist described the Tinubu administration as incompetent and urged Nigerians to vote out the President and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections.

Prior to his return, VDM had alleged that authorities were plotting to arrest him upon his arrival in Nigeria, a claim that generated concern among his supporters.

Several members of the Ratel Movement gathered at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, ahead of his arrival to welcome him.

Obi, Kwankwaso may dump NDC— Former Buhari’s aide

0

Former presidential aide Bashir Ahmad has said that the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, and his running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, could leave the party if their expectations are not met.

Ahmad made the assertion in a post on his verified X account, arguing that both politicians view the NDC mainly as a platform for the 2027 general elections.

According to him, the differing political timelines and ambitions of Obi, Kwankwaso and the party’s national leader, Seriake Dickson, may make long-term alignment difficult.

“If Obi and Kwankwaso’s expectations are not realised within the party, they will definitely move on to another platform ahead of 2031 for the same reason,” Ahmad wrote.

He maintained that Dickson is focused on a long-term political project rather than a short-term electoral arrangement.

“It is obvious that Dickson is only pursuing a long-term political project, not a short-term electoral arrangement.

“From what I understood, his focus is to build a formidable political platform this time that could position him strongly for presidency in 2031 or so,” he added.

2026 World Cup: Why Nigerians should back Mexico against South Africa- Reuben Abati

0

Veteran journalist and former presidential aide, Reuben Abati, has called on Nigerians to support Mexico in its opening World Cup match against South Africa, citing concerns over xenophobic attacks against Nigerians in the Southern African nation.

Speaking on Arise Television’s Morning Show on Thursday, Abati referred to ongoing efforts by the Federal Government to evacuate Nigerians affected by xenophobic violence in South Africa.

He noted that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had concluded arrangements to repatriate Nigerians who registered for evacuation, with the first batch of 278 returnees expected back in the country.

“The spokesman for the ministry of foreign affairs has said that all the arrangements have been made for those Nigerians who have signed up to be brought back to their country from South Africa because of the xenophobic attack. First batch, 278 of them will be assisted, will taken care of, rehabilitated by the Nigerian government,” Abati said.

He added that the government had promised to facilitate the return of five batches of Nigerians.

“We have been promised five batches. We hope that all the five batches over 1000 Nigerians saying that they will come back to their country. There should be a moral story there that if our country is properly organised, then nobody will need to go and seek electricity supply and water supply and good health care in other countries of the world,” he stated.

Abati said the situation highlighted the need for better living conditions and public services in Nigeria to discourage citizens from seeking opportunities abroad.

Turning to football, he urged Nigerians to support Mexico in the World Cup opener against South Africa at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City.

“However, today South Africa and Mexico will be playing the first match at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City. I urge all Nigerians to support Mexico so that we don’t even have a situation whereby South Africans will say ‘these Nigerians have come again. They are doing their job for them,’ and there will be another wave of xenophobic attacks,” he said.

“I think we will be safer to support Mexico in this opening match of the World Cup. The match is at 1pm Mexico local time, which is at 7pm this evening, and I expect Nigerians to support Mexico.

“They say we don’t like them. They say we are doing their job. Let us not do their job for them. We will support Mexico.”
