Why we got involved in Nigeria’s insecurity fight- US military

0

The United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) has stated that its military presence in Nigeria is based on an invitation from the Nigerian government and operates within a mutually agreed framework between both countries.

Speaking during an X Space discussion on Tuesday, AFRICOM’s Director of Public Affairs, Col. Rebecca Heyse, said the partnership between the United States and Nigeria is founded on respect for Nigeria’s sovereignty and shared security interests.

According to Heyse, US military operations and cooperation in Nigeria are carried out only with the consent of the Nigerian government.

“Our operations and cooperation with Nigeria are based on respect for Nigerian sovereignty. We only operate with their invitation and under the US-Nigeria Joint Working Group framework,” she said.

She stressed that the relationship is voluntary and not imposed, noting that both countries collaborate based on mutual agreement.

Heyse further stated that the United States would continue to support the partnership for as long as it remains beneficial to both nations and addresses common security challenges.

“As long as there are common security concerns and the framework still helps both nations, the US will stay committed to the partnership,” she explained.

Portugal defeated Nigeria 2-1 in a pre-world cup international friendly match played on Wednesday night.

The Super Eagles went into the encounter hoping to secure a notable result against a Portuguese side led by Cristiano Ronaldo, having drawn 2-2 with Poland a week earlier.

Portugal opened the scoring through Pedro Neto, who found space inside the penalty area before firing home to give the hosts the advantage.

Nigeria responded before halftime, with Akor Adams producing a powerful run and finish to restore parity.

With the contest seemingly headed for a draw, Francisco Conceicao emerged as the match-winner, cutting inside and curling a superb effort into the net late in the game.

Portugal will now turn their attention to their opening fixture of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where they are scheduled to face the Democratic Republic of Congo next Wednesday.

Why Ex-NNPCL Boss, Mele Kyari should be arrested dead or alive now – Oshiomole

Oshiomhole

Senator Adams Oshiomhole on Wednesday called for the immediate arrest of the former Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, or NNPC, Chief Executive Officer Mele Kyari, over allegations of corruption and financial misconduct.

Oshiomhole accused the former NNPCL boss of failing to account for alleged mismanagement of trillions of naira during his tenure, insisting that the committee should not delay in exercising its constitutional powers.

According to him, the Senate committee must “have the courage” to issue a warrant of arrest immediately, stating that Kyari should be made to answer for his actions in office.

He said, “Mr. Chairman, this committee must have the courage and the will to deploy his powers as initiated in the Nigerian constitution and issue a warrant not tomorrow but today and bring Mel Kyari, even dead or alive.” ” Even if he is dead, we want to see the body, and he will account for it, and you should say, “Here lies a man who died without accounting for his alleged crime that runs into trillions of naira.”

“At a time when the country is borrowing money, we have few sources of money that have not been accounted for. There are serious issues not raised by lame men but by competent auditors, and the man is joking? Where did he have the money to pay for his medical bill in Germany? Having failed repeatedly, we cannot condone this.”

“Mele Kyari cannot be represented by a person; he’s no longer a managing director, and his responsibility is to account for his actions as MD. He cannot be represented in that capacity.”

“I hold the view that your leadership end to exceptions. Yes. End to excuses. I will evoke our powers to order the arrest of Mel Kyari and the managing director of NNPC, both the past and the present, they are guilty of the same offense, total disregard to the Nigerian constitution and unable to account for the gross abuse of our major source of revenue running into trillions of naira.

The clash occurred during the Senate committee hearing on Wednesday.

According to Oshiomhole has accused the NNPC claiming it lacks reputation and operates with a culture of fraud.

He said “NPC has no reputation. Your reputation is for fraud. People want their children to be employed in NPC. Yes. Because it’s a house of thieves and they want their children to benefit from it”, he said.

BREAKING: Terrorist bandits killed in Abuja

0

The Commissioner of Police for the Federal Capital Territory, Ahmed Mohammed Sanusi, on Wednesday announced that two members of a notorious gang responsible for terrorising residents of Abuja were killed during a security operation.

Addressing journalists at the FCT Police Command headquarters, Sanusi said he personally led the operation that resulted in the deaths of the suspects.

The operation followed the abduction of five residents of Paze community in the Byazhin Ward of Bwari Area Council last week.

The bandits had kidnapped five people, including a pastor, during an attack on the community on Thursday. A local vigilante member, identified as Shuaibu Yerima, was also shot dead during the invasion.

According to the police commissioner, all five victims were rescued during a joint operation involving operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, the Nigeria Police Force Intelligence Response Team (IRT), the Kubwa Area Command, local hunters, and vigilante groups.

The operation also led to the arrest of two suspects identified as Icheh Mohammadu and Abubakar Usman, while other members of the gang reportedly escaped into nearby hills.

“And during the operation, the police team also recovered two AK-47 rifles with magazines, while two of the gang members were arrested during the crossfire,” he said.

Sanusi explained that at about 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, he led the joint security team in an intensive search, clearance, and rescue mission across the Paze and Byazhin communities.

He added that the five rescued victims had been taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment, while efforts were underway to reunite them with their families.

NDC National Secretary demanded N10bn bribe, not Peter Obi—Anambra lawmaker, faults Kenneth Okonkwo

0

The House of Representatives aspirant of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) for Nnewi North, Nnewi South, and Ekwusigo Federal Constituency, Obunike Ohaegbu, popularly known as Nwa Miss, has denied claims that he accused NDC presidential candidate Peter Obi of defrauding supporters during the party’s primary elections.

He, however, said it was the national secretary of the party that demanded a N10 billion bribe from him.

This follows allegations made by Nollywood actor-turned-politician Kenneth Okonkwo during an interview on Channels Television. Okonkwo had accused Obi and other NDC leaders in the South-East of collecting bribes during the party’s recent primaries.

According to Okonkwo, Ohaegbu had sent him an “SOS message” exposing alleged irregularities surrounding the conduct of the primaries.

Okonkwo claimed that anyone voting for Peter Obi and the NDC in 2027 would be “voting for criminality,” adding that Ohaegbu “sent an SOS to me and said that Peter Obi is now the head of criminality. “That they were scammed in NDC.”

He further alleged:

“He said that Kwankwaso approached his supporters and ensured that each constituency produced one candidate to avoid being scammed, but Peter Obi instructed them that all aspirants should enter the field, and they were informed that primaries would take place.

“Recall that Dickson publicly stated that once you pay for your expression of interest form, you would not need to pay any additional fees until you are nominated, at which point you would pay nomination fees.

“All of them complied, but then Peter Obi and the leaders of the South East NDC caucus informed them that after paying for the expression of interest forms, they were required to pay a bribe of N10 million for the House of Representatives and N20 million for the Senate.

“After all of them paid, believing they were the candidates, they were instructed to proceed with the primaries. While the primaries were ongoing, Peter Obi was at the John Wood hotel compiling the names of candidates.

“The aspirant provided me with the receipt of the payment.”

However, appearing on the same platform, Channels Television, Ohaegbu rejected the claims and insisted that he never told Okonkwo that he met Peter Obi during the primary election process, nor did he have any monetary discussions with the former Anambra governor.

Addressing the issue, Ohaegbu said:

“First of all, was there any communication between me and Mr Kenneth Okonkwo? The answer is in the affirmative.

“I have over 2000 people that I send everything I write to, including Kenneth Okonkwo and also His Excellency Peter Obi. The message that triggered this was I sent a broadcast to NDC members, which Peter Obi also received. I said that they should disregard any rumor that suggests that any NDC members have been given an automatic ticket, because that is not what the party told us.

“And the member representing Peter Obi’s federal consistency was asked not to run, because it will not be fair if he runs; it will not be fair to other local governments, and that happened in so many other local governments, so it would be wrong to say that the person representing us, who has never been to my community and not even been to my home since the election, will have an automatic ticket.

“And when, especially, it makes it worse when it’s being rumored that the senatorial candidate will come from his local government.

“So it was after the broadcast I sent that he [Okonkwo] called me. Before I came here, I went for morning mass because I’m a Catholic. As I speak to you, the holy communion is still running in my veins. If I had ever said, either through text or if Kenneth can show anywhere in that message, I said I met with Peter Obi throughout this process. I will apologize.”

Ohaegbu explained that his discussions regarding payments were with the party’s national secretary and not Peter Obi.

He stated:

“As a matter of fact, the national secretary told me that all my discussions with him—he did that in his capacity as the national secretary—and he told me if I have problems, I should go back to the party, which I have actually done this morning. My lawyers will be filing papers against the party.

“But what I’m addressing now is what Okonkwo said that Peter Obi told us to go and pay 10 million naira, that he needed the money for his campaign. The N10 million I paid was paid to the account of the NDC in Fidelity Bank. I never said I paid a bribe.

“So he said I told him that the party, the National Caucus, told us to pay 10 million naira. I never said that, and it’s not in the message. And I will want this conversation to be limited to what he said, I said.

“I’m telling you, Peter Obi never told me to pay 10 million naira; I never told Kenneth Okonkwo that Peter Obi in any way told me to pay 10 million naira. The only person who asked me to pay 10 billion naira is the national secretary.”

Ohaegbu also denied ever telling Okonkwo that Peter Obi and other party leaders were compiling primary election results at John Wood Hotel in Abuja while the elections were still ongoing.

BREAKING: Fire outbreak causes panic at Nigeria’s National Assembly

0

A fire outbreak on Wednesday caused panic at the National Assembly complex after flames were reported in the Senate wing of the building.

The incident reportedly occurred at Hearing Room 107 in the Senate wing, sparking concern among lawmakers, staff, and visitors within the complex.

A video circulating online showed a brief commotion as individuals at the scene rushed to contain the fire using fire extinguishers. The incident reportedly disrupted activities momentarily before the situation was brought under control.

The fire broke out shortly after the Senate Committee on the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) concluded the screening of Dr. Zainab Marwa, the nominee representing the North-East on the commission’s board.

As of the time of filing this report, no injuries or casualties had been recorded. Normal activities at the National Assembly were said to have resumed immediately after the fire was extinguished.

According to TVC, the fire may have been triggered by a microwave left switched on in a kitchen area within the facility.

In the aftermath of the incident, journalists covering proceedings at the National Assembly were reportedly directed by committee officials to delete photographs and video recordings captured during the fire outbreak.

Imo Lawmaker, Ugochinyere losses House Minority Leader position

0

The lawmaker representing Ideato North/Ideato South Federal Constituency of Imo State, Ikeagwuonu Ugochinyere, has lost his bid to become the Minority Leader of the House of Representatives after the chamber resolved that only ranking lawmakers can occupy principal offices.

The decision was reached during plenary on Wednesday following the adoption of a motion sponsored by Babajimi Benson, who represents Ikorodu Federal Constituency in Lagos State.

The resolution provided further clarification on Order 7, Rule 15 of the House Standing Orders, which stipulates that only members with relevant legislative experience in the House of Representatives are eligible for appointment as principal officers.

The development effectively rules out first-term lawmakers from occupying key leadership positions within the Green Chamber.

Ugochinyere had been nominated last week by some opposition lawmakers to succeed Kingsley Chinda, the representative for Obio/Akpor Federal Constituency of Rivers State, as Minority Leader. Chinda vacated the position after emerging as the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, for Rivers State.

However, the nomination sparked controversy when Philip Agbese, Deputy Spokesperson of the House and a member of the Labour Party, denied endorsing Ugochinyere for the role during plenary last Thursday.

Agbese alleged that his signature was forged on the document submitted in support of Ugochinyere’s nomination, an allegation the Action Peoples Party, APP, lawmaker strongly rejected, describing it as false.

In response, Ugochinyere later released a video which he said showed Agbese signing the endorsement document, insisting that the nomination process was legitimate.

With the latest resolution by the House, the contest over the Minority Leader position appears settled, as only lawmakers with prior legislative experience in the House are now eligible for consideration.

BBNaija Reunion: ‘He was hard as rock’ – Joanna recounts ‘one-night stand’ with Jason

0

Former Big Brother Naija Season 10 housemate, Joanna, has dismissed claims by fellow ex-housemate Jason Jae that they had a “one-night stand” during their time in Biggie’s house.

It would be recalled that Joanna and Jason shared an intimate moment on the night before her eviction. However, viewers were left uncertain about what transpired after the cameras shifted away from the scene.

Following the show, Jason described the incident as a “one-night stand” during an interview.

Speaking during the second episode of the reunion, which aired on Tuesday night, Joanna refuted the claim, insisting that nothing intimate happened between them.

According to her, Jason came to her bed while she was emotional over Thelma’s eviction, and she merely noticed that he was physically aroused and attempted to cover him up.

“The very first interview Jason Jae had, he claimed that the incident was a ‘one-night thing’. I was shocked like, ‘Are you a baby?’

“I was sleeping when he came to my bed. I was very emotional because it was the night Thelma got evicted. I woke up to see him in my bed. He was hard as rock. I noticed it and I tried to cover him up. Only for him to go out and say we had a one-night stand,” Joanna said.

In response, Jason apologised for suggesting they had a one-night stand. However, he maintained that he was never romantically interested in Joanna.

He also rejected Joanna’s allegation that he pursued her as a rebound after being rejected by Dede, insisting that was not the case.

N5bn defamation: Arise TV’s Rufai Oseni disagrees with Peter Obi over suit against Kenneth Okonkwo

0

Arise News anchor, Rufai Oseni, has criticised the decision by Peter Obi’s legal team to institute a defamation suit against Kenneth Okonkwo.

Obi recently dragged the actor-turned-politician to court over comments he allegedly made on national television following the conduct of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) primary elections in the South-East.

Okonkwo had alleged during a recent interview that Obi and other NDC leaders in the region collected money from aspirants seeking House of Representatives and Senate tickets.

The allegations were strongly denied by Obi’s camp, which subsequently filed a defamation lawsuit and issued a seven-day ultimatum demanding that Okonkwo retract the claims.

Reacting during an Arise TV morning programme, Oseni described Okonkwo as a “political surrogate” and argued that Obi should not pursue the matter in court.

According to Oseni, the lawsuit only succeeded in drawing greater public attention to the allegations.

“If I’m to advise Mr Peter Obi, I would ask him to remove that case from the court,” he said.

“He doesn’t need. I can bet you that a lot of people did not even hear when Kenneth Okonkwo said it. It became news when Peter Obi sued him.

“You just gave a media traction to this guy, allow him to talk as he wants, the best you can do is to refute it. It is not everything you react to.”
