President Bola Tinubu has expressed shock and sadness over the death of retired Major-General Rabe Abubakar, who died while being held captive by bandits in Katsina State.

DAILY POST reports that the retired senior military officer was abducted by armed men and later died in captivity.

In a statement issued by the State House on Saturday, Tinubu described the incident as a tragic reminder of the persistent security challenges confronting parts of the country.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed shock over the death of retired Major-General Rabe Abubakar while in the custody of terrorists in Katsina State.

“General Abubakar, after a distinguished career in the military, retired a few years ago. He was on his way to his hometown when the hoodlums captured him,” the statement said.

According to the presidency, the late officer, who served the Nigerian Armed Forces with distinction before his retirement, was travelling to his hometown when he was intercepted and abducted by the gunmen.

The statement further disclosed that Abubakar’s wife was kidnapped alongside him and remains in the custody of the abductors, heightening concerns over her safety and the worsening insecurity in the region.

How Abacha died-Abdulsalami recounts

0

Former Nigerian Head of State, Abdulsalami Abubakar, has revealed dramatic details surrounding the death of former military ruler Sani Abacha in June 1998, describing how he was unexpectedly summoned to the Presidential Villa and kept in the dark about the unfolding events.

In his autobiography, Call of Duty, Abdulsalami recounted that on the morning of June 8, 1998, he received an urgent message that Abacha wanted to see him. At the time, he feared the meeting was connected to an assignment to represent Nigeria at an ECOWAS summit in Togo.

He explained that with then Chief of General Staff, Lt.-Gen. Oladipo Diya, in detention over an alleged coup plot, he had effectively become the second-ranking official in government and was frequently tasked with representing Abacha at official functions.

According to Abdulsalami, he informed his wife of his concerns and instructed his orderly to prepare his travel belongings before heading to the Presidential Villa.

In the book, he wrote: “On Monday, 8 June, I received a call very early in the morning that he (Abacha) wanted to see me. I quietly prayed that he would not send me to Togo where there was going to be an ECOWAS summit. I was tired of going everywhere.”

He said another call followed while he was preparing to leave, stressing the urgency of the meeting. Believing he might be travelling, he quickly dressed in a tracksuit and slippers and headed to the Villa.

Upon arrival, however, he was directed to a waiting room instead of being ushered directly into Abacha’s office, an arrangement he found unusual given his close working relationship with the late ruler.

After waiting for about an hour alongside then Chief of Army Staff, Major-General Ishaya Bamaiyi, Abdulsalami became suspicious. He later discovered that the door to the waiting room had been locked from the outside.

“Something kept telling me that something was wrong but I could not place a finger on it,” he recalled.

The mystery was eventually cleared when the late Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Coomassie, entered the room and asked the two men to follow him.

As they walked toward the residence, Abdulsalami said he questioned why he had earlier been told that Abacha was in his office. It was then that Coomassie informed him that the Head of State had died.

“I was shocked. I asked him what happened and he insisted we proceed first. He did not tell me anything else,” Abdulsalami wrote.

Abacha died on June 8, 1998, after nearly five years in power. Abdulsalami subsequently emerged as Nigeria’s Head of State and supervised the transition that returned the country to democratic rule in 1999.

The Anambra State Government has confirmed the arrest of Pastor Harrison Charles, founder of Day Spring Assembly in Awada, Onitsha, over allegations that he took dozens of married women from their husbands and made them his wives.

The pastor has been at the centre of widespread allegations circulating on social media, with videos containing confessions and accusations from alleged victims and their relatives. Some of the claims allege that he encouraged wife-swapping among members of his church and personally took some married women as wives.

The development comes amid the state government’s ongoing crackdown on suspected fake pastors. Following the recent arraignment of eight clerics in court, more individuals have reportedly come forward with accounts of alleged exploitation by religious leaders.

There had been conflicting reports regarding Pastor Charles’ arrest, with some claiming he had not been detained. However, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media, Dr. Ejimofor Opara, confirmed in a Facebook post that the cleric had been arrested.

According to Opara, the suspect has been handed over to the police, while a joint investigation involving the Anambra State Government and the police is underway. He also urged members of the public with relevant information to contact the Special Adviser to the Governor on Community Security, Mr. Ken Emeakayi.

Opara stated: “Pastor Harrison Charles, owner of Day Spring Assembly in Awada, Onitsha, was arrested by operatives of Agunechemba following a viral video containing several allegations against him.

“He is currently being investigated by the police, in collaboration with the Anambra State Government.

“During his arrest, about eleven babies were found in his home. He claims to be the father of these eleven babies, stating they are from eleven of his wives.

“He also claims he does not know the number of wives he has married or the total number of children he has.

“While investigations continue, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Community Security, Mr. Ken Emeakayi, has urged anyone with additional information to report it to the State Government via 08034182108.”

Authorities say investigations are ongoing and have encouraged anyone with useful information to come forward.
