Kidnapped Ebonyi Monarch, father of former Deputy Governor, dies in captivity

0

The Ebonyi State Police Command has arrested nine suspects over the kidnapping and killing of a traditional ruler, Eze Francis Igwe.

Eze Igwe, the traditional ruler of Ndufu-Alike in Ikwo Local Government Area and father of former Ebonyi State Deputy Governor Barrister Kelechi Igwe, was reportedly abducted in the early hours of Sunday while on his way to church.

In a statement issued on Friday, March 6, 2026, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Joshua Ukandu, said the arrests followed intensive operations launched by security operatives after the monarch’s abduction on March 1.

Ukandu explained that police operatives immediately deployed intelligence and technical resources in a bid to rescue the monarch. The operation initially led to the arrest of two suspected members of the kidnapping syndicate.

According to him, during interrogation, the suspects allegedly confessed that the monarch had been killed on March 2 and agreed to lead security operatives to the gang’s hideout to recover the body.

However, as police approached the hideout, other members of the gang reportedly opened fire on the operatives. The police responded and overpowered the attackers during the exchange.

One suspect was neutralized during the gun battle, while others fled the scene.

The police later arrested seven additional suspects linked to the crime and recovered a locally made pistol from them.

Ukandu added that the remains of the late monarch were subsequently recovered and deposited in a morgue for autopsy.

He said the suspects are currently in police custody, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend other fleeing members of the gang.

The police spokesperson added that investigations are ongoing and the suspects will be charged in court upon completion.

Imported petrol undercuts Dangote price Again despite Naira-for-Crude deal

0

The landing cost of imported petrol has once again dropped below the price of fuel produced by the Dangote Refinery, despite the refinery benefiting from the Federal Government’s naira-for-crude arrangement.

Data released by the Major Energies Marketers Association of Nigeria (MEMAN) on March 2 showed that the landing cost of imported petrol stood at N809.83 per liter, even amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East.

In contrast, the gantry price of petrol at Dangote Refinery rose to N874 per liter after the 650,000-barrel-per-day facility increased its price by N100 earlier in the week, citing a rise in crude oil prices linked to the Middle East conflict.

The figures indicate that imported petrol is currently N64.2 per liter cheaper than fuel supplied by the refinery.

The latest increase by Dangote Refinery has also pushed up retail pump prices across parts of the country. Filling stations in Abuja and neighboring states such as Nasarawa State, Kogi State, and Niger State now sell petrol between N960 and N980 per liter, up from the previous range of N855 to N899.

More notably, filling stations operated by MRS Oil Nigeria Plc, which distribute Dangote-supplied fuel, are selling petrol at N975 per liter. This is N15 higher than prices at outlets run by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), AA Rano Nigeria Limited, and Ranoil Nigeria Limited, where petrol currently sells for around N960 per liter.

The situation highlights an ongoing price war in Nigeria’s downstream oil sector, with consumers bearing the impact of fluctuating fuel prices.

Commenting on the development, MEMAN said, “The market is currently on high uncertainty.”

In a statement on Thursday, Dangote Refinery attributed its latest ex-depot price increase to rising global crude oil prices.

“The refinery implemented a measured adjustment of N100 per liter in its ex-depot price of Premium Motor Spirit, representing an increase of about 12 percent. The refinery has absorbed 20 percent of the cost escalation, for now, to cushion the domestic market,” the company stated.

The refinery also confirmed that it participates in the government’s naira-for-crude policy but said the supply it receives under the arrangement is limited.

According to the company, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited supplies about five cargoes of crude oil monthly under the naira-denominated arrangement, while the refinery requires roughly 13 cargoes each month to meet its production needs.

“Furthermore, while we receive about five cargoes a month from NNPC, which we pay for in Naira, these cargoes are priced at international market prices plus a premium and fall short of the 13 cargoes that we require to support sales into Nigeria,” the refinery said.

Industry stakeholders have continued to raise concerns over the persistent impact of global crude oil volatility on domestic fuel prices despite the naira-for-crude policy introduced in 2024.

Recently, activist lawyer Deji Adeyanju also expressed concern over the development.

As of the time of filing this report, Brent crude was trading at $85.12 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate stood at $80.54 per barrel.

Earlier in February, imported petrol was about N77 per liter cheaper than Dangote-supplied fuel at a time when global crude prices were relatively stable.

Shun entitlement mentality—First Lady Remi Tinubu tells Nigerians marital experience

0

Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has drawn from her nearly four decades of marriage to President Bola Tinubu to urge Nigerians to abandon what she described as an “entitlement mentality” and instead embrace responsibility, integrity, and service.

Oluremi Tinubu made the remark while hosting an interfaith Breaking of Fast (Iftar/Lent) for women from different sectors across the country.

This was disclosed in a statement on Thursday signed by her Senior Special Assistant on Media, Busola Kukoyi.

Speaking during the gathering, the First Lady highlighted how mutual respect and maturity have sustained her marriage of almost 40 years with President Tinubu, saying the same values should guide relationships and leadership in the country.

“And I can tell you, I cannot remember when both of us raised our voices at each other. Maybe not more than twice in the 40 years, I can tell you that.

“So we’ve been quite mature and respectful about that. And I believe that’s the best way to live together,” she said.

She noted that the coincidence of the Muslim Ramadan fast and the Christian Lenten season carries a significant message for Nigeria about unity and peaceful coexistence.

“Today, like I said, is indeed a great day. It is a day that God only made for us to gather together, and for women, first, from different backgrounds. Since the Ramadan fast was announced and the Lenten season began together, it was like God was speaking to us as a nation,” she said.

According to her, despite attempts by some people to create division along religious lines, Nigerians have historically lived together peacefully regardless of their faiths.

“Recently, we know a lot of things have been going on, and people are trying to target our religious beliefs… And we Nigerians, we know that most of the time that is not the case. Some of us are married to men of different faiths, and we lived together among us for many years. Me, almost 40 years,” she noted.

Drawing lessons from her marital experience, the First Lady urged Nigerians to abandon what she described as an “entitlement mentality,” stressing that citizens must focus on contributing positively to society.

She also encouraged women whose husbands hold public offices, as well as those occupying leadership positions, to recognize their roles in promoting responsible leadership and national development.

“Most women in this room, either you have your own office, or your husband is in the public office… you as the wife have a role to play,” she added.

She further stressed the need for Nigerians to mentor younger generations, noting that the country’s future depends on the guidance and values passed on to them.

In a lecture delivered at the event, a director at the National Open University of Nigeria, Prof. Ganiyat Adejoke Adesina-Uthman, raised concerns about what she described as a crisis of trust in public office.

Speaking on the topic, “Serving with Excellence, Compassion, and Integrity in Public Life,” she emphasized that integrity remains a non-negotiable value for anyone in public service.

Why Tinubu snubs Fubara, calls Wike Rivers’ political leader—Ex-Speaker Ochei

President Tinbu

A former Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Hon. Victor Ochei, has explained the reason President Bola Tinubu described the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, as the political leader in Rivers State.

Ochei said the president’s remark does not diminish the authority of the Rivers State governor, Sim Fubara.

According to him, the statement should be understood within its proper context, noting that Tinubu views Wike as a prominent political figure in Rivers State rather than through the lens of party affiliation.

He urged Nigerians to carefully consider the circumstances under which the president made the comment.

DAILY POST had reported that during a peace meeting involving the FCT Minister and his political ally, President Tinubu reportedly told Governor Fubara that Wike, despite not belonging to the All Progressives Congress (APC), is the political leader of all parties in Rivers State.

The president also advised Wike to halt the impeachment process against Fubara in the interest of peace, while urging the governor to focus on governance and avoid early discussions about a second-term bid.

Speaking on Arise News, Ochei said, “Let me say what the problem is. People need to learn to contextualize statements. It’s a statement made by the President. Now his rating of the Minister of FCT, Nyesom Wike, is that he is a leader in Rivers State. As River State is today, Nyesom Wike is a leader and works in his [Tinubu’s] cabinet. And besides being a cabinet minister for him, he is a leader of note in Rivers State.

“So he speaks to his own governor, who is an APC. Hey, relax, whatever it is. Wike is the number one. It’s not a statement to say that has changed the position of how governors are seen. However, the president made his own statement. Take the context, not as saying, “Oh, your constitution says this,” and then it’s 100% like that. That’s not the meaning. People try to impute other meanings into it.

“That does not take away the party. Chairman, what did he say? The governor is 001. The president is speaking; he’s a leader of our party, and he says Wike is the leader, whether in APC or PDP. He sees Wike as River State. He doesn’t see Wike from the prism of APC.

“So all this lies in contextualization, and I think that’s where the major issue is; people are seeing it from that point and not really dealing with the context upon which the statements were made. And if you need to say or make a statement, you need to know and understand it this way. The President needs to make a case where you’re bringing peace, and you don’t want to sound like you’re putting down one in favor of another, or the outcome will be disastrous.

“Now, as a leader, you balance situations, and this is the president balancing situations. But people will always pick on the other side. Oh, this is what it is. It is not cast in stone. Contextualization is much, even much more important, because leaders are always misunderstood, misconstrued, and misrepresented, but that’s what makes them great leaders.”

Terrorists telling Christians to convert to Muslim or die—US lawmaker Moore raises alarm on genocide in Nigeria

0

United States Congressman Riley M. Moore has reacted to a recent deadly attack carried out by fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) in Adamawa State.

The terrorists reportedly admitted to killing 27 Christians and burning at least 10 houses during the attack, which occurred in February.

According to an X post by security expert Brant Philip, the terrorists, while claiming responsibility for the attack, also renewed threats against Christians in Nigeria. The group reportedly told Christians to “either pay the jizyah tax, convert to Islam, or be killed,” describing it as a “fair deal.”

Reacting in a post on X, Moore lamented that the assailants were forcing Christians to convert to Islam or face death.

The lawmaker called on the Nigerian government to urgently take stronger action to address the situation.

He wrote, “Christians continue to be explicitly targeted for their faith in Nigeria.

“ISIS-West Africa is slaughtering Christians and telling other Christians they must convert or die.

“In our report to the White House, we made it clear that increased American support is contingent on the Nigerian government doing more to defend Christians. Now is the time for Abuja to step up.”

Regulate AI deployment in Nigeria—NRCAI tells FG

0

The Nigerian government has been urged to urgently regulate the deployment and usage of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the country.

The call was made on Thursday by the Nigeria Religious Coalition on AI (NRCAI), comprising the Christian Council of Nigeria and Jama’atu Nasril Islam, during a training program for journalists on the ethical use of AI in Abuja.

Speaking with journalists, the General Secretary of the Christian Council of Nigeria, Bishop Evans Onyemara, said the government must regulate AI to ensure that Nigerians maximize the benefits of the technology while avoiding potential harm.

He said, “The essence of our meeting here today is to talk about the religious understanding and use of artificial intelligence. And we as a church have the understanding that human beings are made in the image of God and that apart from human beings there is no other thing that God has given prominence in creation. And that is why the Bible said, “Man, if you like humanity, human beings, you should control every other thing and ensure orderliness in the universe.”

Onyemara added that humans must ensure that AI is deployed in ways that promote the common good.

“So we believe that human beings should deploy things like artificial intelligence in the best aspect that will enhance the common good, that will enhance our existence, and that will not put us into harm or harm’s way. So it is important that the country adopt strategies and regulations that will ensure that the use of AI in the country is regulated. From our training today, it is obvious, and we have been educated, and our eyes are open that Nigerians can ask for laws that regulate the use of AI and not just allow the artificial general intelligence and whatever that is English-made, you know, to be pulled down into our country and everybody begins to scamper for it.”

He further noted that Nigeria can also develop its own AI systems.

“We can regulate what we use in Nigeria, and we can also help to co-create the kind of AI that we require and need for use as a nation in Nigeria”, he stated.

How Christians should use AI—Bishop Onyemara

“Well, I wouldn’t want you to push me to that philosophy of saying AI should be used scripturally because what we’re asking is for ethical use, and when we talk about ethics, we are looking at the rightness and wrongness of every action.

“So that is where, because if you push it further to a scriptural use, it will now begin to offend some people. But when we talk about it generally as an issue of ethics, you discover that every religion, even those who don’t believe in anything, is covered because it would make for peace and harmony and concord in our society”.

How Muslims should use AI—Mallam Bida

Also speaking, the Administrative Secretary of Jama’atu Nasril Islam, Mallam Yusuf Ahmed Bida, explained that there are four major principles guiding the use of AI from the Islamic perspective.

“Essentially, there are four components to the deployment or usage of AI from the Islamic perspective.

“One, it should serve as a method or as a way of getting closer to God.

“Two, there should be some level of sincerity in usage without abusing it. It should be that that will not be harmful to the community you are using it on, and it should not harm you yourself.

“Three, you should be just in its usage. Anything that will cause mistrust or cause problems, you should not go into it, and you should have a feeling of mercy and accountability. You should know that it is a sort of being merciful by God Almighty to us so that these things will ease our work, and we should know that we will be accountable on the day of judgment for every act of engagement we do with AI, just as with our lives. ”

Bida also stressed the need for strict government oversight of AI in Nigeria.

“Well, first and foremost, the government has to understand the enormity associated with the AI.

“They should not open up Nigerian space. When I say Nigerian space, Nigerian technological space, or all sorts of things, there should be a serious check on the part of the government.

“Number two, it’s not everything that should be deployed into the Nigerian technology space or science and technology. There should be serious scrutiny. Number three, the government must be firm in its decisions on matters of AI.

“If not, it will be disruptive in the near future. Just as we have seen in some countries, even the use of AI for research has been seriously regulated. Here, it is just free somehow.

“But government, especially through education, science, and technology, needs to seriously regulate this AI, and a policy document should clearly bring on board all these policies so that Nigerians should know what it entails”?, hr .

Similarly, Very Rev. Kolade Fadahunsi, Director of the Institute of Church and Society, Ibadan, also emphasized the importance of ensuring ethical use of AI within Nigeria’s digital economy ecosystem.

Nigerian Newsphere recalls the National Information Technology Development Agency reiterated the Nigerian government’s commitment to responsible use of AI.

“I was forced by friends”—Pastor Chris Okafor withdraws apology to actress Doris Ogala

0

The Senior Pastor of Mountain of Liberty and Miracle Ministry, Chris Okafor, has withdrawn the public apology he previously offered to Nollywood actress Doris Ogala over allegations surrounding their alleged past relationship.

Nigerian Newssphere reports that Ogala had accused the cleric last year of abandoning her despite allegedly promising to marry her after what she described as an eight-year sexual relationship.

The controversy intensified after a video clip surfaced on social media showing the pastor with a young woman. Following the incident, Ogala publicly demanded compensation and further accused Okafor of being involved in scandalous and criminal activities.

Amid the backlash, Okafor reportedly gave the actress $10,000, which she rejected, insisting the amount was insignificant compared to the evidence she claimed to possess against him.

In response to the growing controversy at the time, the pastor publicly apologized during a Sunday service, asking Ogala and other women he said he might have hurt to forgive him.

Despite the apology, the actress continued to criticize him on social media.

However, in a new twist, Okafor has now retracted the apology, saying he was pressured by people he once considered friends.

In a video currently trending on social media, the cleric addressed his congregation, referring to Ogala as “Jezebel” and declaring that he would pursue a legal resolution to the dispute.

“There’s no apology for what I didn’t do or for someone I haven’t met face to face. I was pressured by people I called friends but who are not,” he said.

“Firstly, the reason why I apologized was that the fathers of faith were being dragged. And I did not want them to be dragged. Pastor Bishop Abioye and Matthew,” he added.

Explaining why he went on his knees during the earlier apology, Okafor said, “I knelt down because of those fathers. Not because of any Jezebel anywhere.”

The development comes amid ongoing controversies surrounding the pastor, including allegations by his second daughter, Amara, who has reportedly threatened to press charges against him over claims of assault and abuse.

Nigerian Govt loses as court clears Abba Kyari four years after NDLEA’s arrest

0

A Federal High Court in Abuja has discharged and acquitted former Deputy Commissioner of Police Abba Kyari of a 23-count charge bordering on alleged non-declaration of assets.

Delivering judgment on Thursday, Justice James Omotosho ruled that the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) failed to provide sufficient evidence to prove the allegations against Kyari.

Kyari had been arraigned alongside his two brothers, who were accused of swearing false affidavits in an alleged attempt to conceal the origin of certain properties.

In his ruling, Justice Omotosho held that the prosecution’s case largely revolved around claims that Kyari failed to declare several landed properties. However, he noted that the agency did not present any documentary evidence to establish that the properties were owned by the suspended police officer.

According to the judge, ownership of landed property can be proven through traditional history, title documents, acts of possession, or possession connected to the owner, none of which the prosecution presented.

The court specifically found that the NDLEA failed to prove that properties located in Fountain Estate, Kasana, said to belong to Ramatu Kyari, were actually owned by Abba Kyari.

Justice Omotosho also ruled that the prosecution could not link Kyari to other properties at Linda Choko Road in Asokoro, Abuja, and in Maiduguri, Borno State.

During his defense, Kyari told the court that the Borno properties belonged to his late father and were inherited by him and his siblings. The judge held that the prosecution failed to disprove the claim.

The court further faulted the charges against Kyari’s brothers, stating that the prosecution accused them of conspiracy in bad faith and failed to establish the allegation.

Justice Omotosho ultimately described the NDLEA’s case as weak and lacking substance, leading to the acquittal of all the defendants.

The Nigerian news sphere recalls in February 2022 that Abba Kyari was arrested by NDLEA for drug-related offenses.

Kwankwaso: Kano Assembly begins impeachment process against Gov Yusuf Abba’s deputy Gwarzo

0

The Kano State House of Assembly has begun impeachment proceedings against the Deputy Governor of Kano State, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, over allegations of gross misconduct, abuse of office, and breach of public trust.

The impeachment notice was presented during plenary by the Majority Leader, Lawan Hussaini Dala, who said the action was taken in line with Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).

Dala told lawmakers that the notice contains several allegations linked to Abdussalam’s tenure as Commissioner for Local Government between 2023 and 2024, as well as actions allegedly taken in his current role as deputy governor.

According to him, the accusations center on the diversion of local government funds, abuse of office, and other conduct regarded as impeachable under the constitution.

Dala alleged that while supervising the administration of the state’s 44 local government councils, Abdussalam was involved in diverting funds meant for council operations. He claimed that between June 2023 and January 2024, the deputy governor received N1.5 million monthly from each of the 44 local government areas.

The Majority Leader said the arrangement amounted to N66 million monthly over seven months, bringing the total to N462 million. He described the alleged payments as a serious breach of public trust that undermines confidence in governance.

He further alleged that from February to July 2024, Abdussalam received additional payments under the pretext of executing special assignments. According to him, each local government council allegedly paid N3.255 million monthly during the six-month period, bringing the total to about N726 million.

Dala maintained that the alleged transactions violated the principles of transparency and accountability expected of public office holders.

The impeachment notice also accused the deputy governor of abuse of office in connection with another transaction. Dala claimed Abdussalam facilitated payments of N10 million each from the 44 local government councils to NovoMed Pharmaceuticals Limited.

He said the payments, amounting to N440 million, were allegedly carried out in violation of the state’s procurement and fiscal management regulations.

“The misuse of official capacity to confer undue advantage constitutes abuse of power and is contrary to the obligations of public office,” the majority leader said while presenting the notice.

He added that the cumulative allegations amount to gross misconduct as defined under Section 188(2) of the constitution.

Dala explained that gross misconduct includes serious constitutional violations or grave wrongdoing by a public officer, arguing that the alleged diversion of funds and abuse of office represent a fundamental breach of constitutional and ethical standards.

The Majority Leader also informed the House that the impeachment notice was endorsed by 38 lawmakers, meeting the constitutional threshold required to initiate the process.

He urged the Speaker to ensure that the notice is transmitted to the deputy governor in accordance with the law.

“Based on the foregoing allegations, we hereby resolve that His Excellency, Aminu Abdussalam, the Deputy Governor of Kano State, be impeached and removed from office in accordance with the provisions of Section 188 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” Dala said.

Following the presentation, members of the Assembly signaled support for the notice. The Speaker acknowledged receipt of the document and is expected to formally notify the deputy governor as stipulated by law.

Under constitutional procedure, once the notice is served, the House may request the Chief Judge of the state to constitute an investigative panel if the motion secures the required majority.

This comes after Governor Abba Yusuf defected to the All Progressives Party. However, former Governor of the State Rabiu Kwankwaso condemned Abba’s defection.
