0

Iran has announced its withdrawal from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, becoming the first country to pull out of the tournament.

The country’s Sports Minister, Ahmad Donyamali, confirmed that Iran will not participate in the competition scheduled for this summer.

Donyamali said the decision followed recent attacks by the United States and Israel, which reportedly led to the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

According to him, the escalating conflict has drawn in several countries across the Middle East, with Iran responding by launching attacks on US military bases in the region.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico between June and July.

Iran had been scheduled to face New Zealand and Belgium in Los Angeles on June 15 and 21, respectively, before taking on Egypt in Seattle on June 26.

However, Donyamali insisted that Iran will not travel to the United States for the tournament, stressing that there is “no possibility” the national team will participate.

“Since this corrupt government assassinated our leader, we have no conditions under which we can participate in the World Cup,” he said during a television interview.

Iran claims ‘Trump, Netanyahu trapped in Slaughterhouse’, releases video of captured US soldiers[Video]

The Commander-in-Chief of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), Ahmad Vahidi, has claimed that US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are “trapped in a slaughterhouse in the Persian Gulf” amid escalating tensions in the region.

Vahidi made the remark during an interview with Mehr News Agency while speaking on the ongoing hostilities involving Iran, the United States, and Israel.

According to him, recent strikes carried out by Iran targeted key infrastructure in Israel.

“Now is our downhill phase. You saw what happened just last night in Tel Aviv,” he said.

“This means that we hit the radars and the infrastructure. Today, truly, Mr Trump and Netanyahu are trapped in a slaughterhouse in the Persian Gulf.

“And in the coming days and weeks, much more joyful news will be delivered to the dear nation of Iran.”

In a related development, Iran released a video allegedly showing captured US soldiers during the ongoing conflict between the United States and Israel on one side and Iran on the other.

In the footage circulating online, the soldiers appear kneeling with their hands cuffed behind their backs.

Reports indicate that tensions escalated on February 28 after the United States and Israel launched airstrikes on Iran, an attack said to have killed Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei.

Since then, hostilities have intensified, with Iran reportedly targeting US interests in neighbouring countries and launching drone and missile strikes toward Israel.

The United States is said to have recorded at least seven soldiers killed during the conflict, while no fewer than 104 others have sustained injuries.

Nigerian Naira records first gain against US dollar after weeks of decline

0

The Nigerian naira recorded its first appreciation against the United States dollar at the official foreign exchange market on Tuesday after weeks of persistent decline.

Data released by the Central Bank of Nigeria showed that the naira closed at N1,401.40 per dollar on Tuesday, an improvement from the N1,405.62 recorded on Monday.

The latest figure indicates that the local currency strengthened by N4.22 against the dollar on a day-to-day basis.

The last time the naira appreciated at the official market was on February 17, when it exchanged at N1,335.96 per dollar. Since then, the currency has been on a sustained depreciation streak.

Meanwhile, at the parallel market, popularly known as the black market, the naira remained unchanged at N1,420 per dollar on Tuesday, the same rate recorded a day earlier.

The development comes as global oil prices declined, with Brent and West Texas Intermediate crude falling below $90 per barrel on Tuesday for the first time since the Iran-United States-Israel conflict began on February 28, 2026.

Amid the drop in global crude prices, Dangote Refinery recently reduced its gantry price for petrol to N1,075 per liter after several previous increases.

According to data from the Central Bank of Nigeria, Nigeria’s external reserves stood at $49.94 billion as of March 6.

BREAKING: Nigerian filling stations lower fuel prices after Dangote petrol cut

0

Some filling stations in Nigeria have begun reducing their petrol pump prices following the N100 per liter gantry price cut announced by Dangote Refinery.

Checks by Nigerian Newssphere on Tuesday showed that Ranoil and Sharon filling stations in Abuja reduced their petrol prices by N20, bringing the pump price down to N1,330 per liter from N1,350.

However, other marketers have moved in the opposite direction. Retail outlets operated by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), as well as MRS and AA Rano filling stations, increased their pump prices on Tuesday morning.

The stations raised their petrol prices to between N1,260 and an1,330 per liter as of Tuesday evening, up from about N1,090 per liter recorded on Monday. The marketers are yet to reflect the Dangote Refinery gantry price reduction or the recent drop in global crude oil prices.

Meanwhile, the price of Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), commonly known as diesel, remained unchanged N1,780 per liter at Ranoil, AA Rano, and several other filling stations in Abuja.

A manager at an MRS filling station in Abuja, who spoke to Nigerian Newssphere on condition of anonymity, confirmed that petrol was selling N1,260 per liter at the outlet but declined to say whether the price would be reduced in the coming days following the refinery’s price cut.

Reacting to the development, the National President of the Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria (PETROAN), Billy Gillis-Harry, said marketers may begin to adjust their prices downward before the end of the week.

“An adjustment may come from now to Friday since Dangote Refinery reduced its gantry price to ₦1,075 per liter today,” he told DAILY POST.

Meanwhile, reports indicate that Dangote Refinery has suspended petrol sales at its gantry since Sunday, a situation that could limit the immediate impact of Tuesday’s price reduction.

DAILY POST recalls that the refinery had earlier increased its gantry petrol price by ₦396 per liter over the past 10 days before announcing the ₦100 reduction to ₦1,075 per liter on Tuesday.

The price adjustment by the 650,000-barrel-per-day refinery followed a decline in global crude oil prices after United States President Donald Trump signaled a possible end to the Iran war.

Stop doing BBL- Kiddwaya to Nigerian ladies

Reality TV star Kiddwaya has advised Nigerian women to avoid undergoing Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) procedures following reports of a woman’s death linked to complications from the surgery.

Kiddwaya shared the message in a post on X, stressing that many men prefer natural body shapes and urging women not to risk their health for cosmetic enhancement.

Dangote Refinery has announced a reduction in the prices of petrol and diesel after incessant hike in the last ten days.

According to the refinery’s latest pricing template released on March 10, 2026, the gantry price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), also known as petrol, has been reduced by N100.

The new price now stands N1,075 per liter, down from the previous N1,175 per liter.

The refinery also stated that the price of PMS for coastal supply has been fixed at N1,050 per liter, reflecting a slight adjustment to account for maritime distribution costs.

Similarly, the price of Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), commonly known as diesel, has been reduced to N1,430 per liter at the gantry.

This represents a decrease of N190 from the earlier price of N1,620 per liter.

The company, however, clarified that the gantry prices do not include statutory charges imposed by the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority.

Fuel hike: Otti announces end to free transport services in Abia

0

The Abia State Government under Governor Alex Otti has ended the 100 percent free transportation services for Abians.

This comes as the government introduced a 50 percent subsidized fare for its Green Shuttle mass transit buses; the move ends the previously free services.

The state Commissioner for Information, Mr. Okey Kanu, disclosed this on Monday while briefing journalists after the State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti in Umuahia.

Kanu explained that the new fare system took effect from March 1, 2026, adding that the decision was made to ensure the sustainability and smooth running of the transport program.

Under the new arrangement, commuters will pay the subsidized fare through the Abia Connect Card, a cashless payment card linked to the Abia State Social Identification Number (ABSSIN).

According to the commissioner, registration agents have been deployed to major bus terminals and bus shelters across Umuahia and Aba to help residents register and obtain the card for easy access to the service.

He further revealed that more than 202,000 passengers used the Green Shuttle buses between December 24, 2025, and March 8, 2026, when the service was largely free.

Kanu noted that the introduction of subsidized fares is aimed at sustaining the transport initiative while ensuring residents continue to enjoy reliable and affordable public transportation across the state.

This comes amid the burgeoning rise in fuel price to above N1,200 per liter nationwide after Dangote Refinery hiked its petrol price to N1,175 per liter.
