Wike: No need to go to Supreme Court—Bukola Saraki tells Turaki, Seyi Makinde, others in PDP

0

Former Senate President Bukola Saraki has called on leaders and stakeholders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to accept the recent judgment of the Court of Appeal of Nigeria on the party’s national convention and avoid prolonging the legal dispute.

Saraki made the appeal in a statement issued in Abuja by his media aide, Yusuph Olaniyonu.

The Court of Appeal of Nigeria on Monday affirmed an earlier decision of the Federal High Court of Nigeria restraining the PDP from conducting its national convention.

The appellate court also dismissed the appeal filed by a faction led by Taminu Turaki, which claims leadership of the party following last year’s Ibadan convention, where members of its National Working Committee were elected.

Despite the ruling, the Turaki-led faction has instructed its legal team to approach the Supreme Court of Nigeria to challenge the decision.

Reacting to the development, Saraki warned that further litigation could endanger the party’s ability to field candidates for the 2027 general elections due to the timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

He noted that waiting for a Supreme Court verdict could cause the party to miss critical deadlines for the nomination of candidates.

According to him, the primary role of a political party is to provide a platform for members who wish to contest elections and serve the people, stressing that internal disputes and personal interests should not undermine that responsibility.

Saraki therefore urged party leaders to adopt a spirit of compromise and cooperation in order to accommodate all interests during the election of officers at the national convention.

He added that the most practical way forward is for stakeholders to engage in dialogue and build consensus that would allow the PDP to organize an inclusive convention in line with INEC’s timetable, rather than continuing legal battles that could derail preparations for the 2027 polls.

Saraki concluded that party leaders must rise above personal interests, insisting that allowing “sleeping dogs to lie” would help stabilize the PDP and strengthen its chances ahead of the next general elections.

BREAKING: Terrorism financing: Court adjourns Malami, son’s trial

0

The Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday adjourned the alleged terrorism financing and illegal possession of firearms case against former Attorney-General of the Federation Abubakar Malami and his son, Abdulaziz Malami, until April 15 and 16.

The defendants were present in court when the case came up before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik.

During the proceedings, prosecution counsel, Akinlolu Kehinde, SAN, informed the court that although the matter was scheduled for hearing, he had only received instructions to take over the prosecution of the case on Monday and needed time to consult with witnesses.

“I got the instruction to take over the prosecution of the case on Monday, and so I need time to interface with the witnesses.

“I most humbly ask for another date,” Kehinde said.

Counsel to the defendants, Shuaibu Arua, SAN, did not oppose the request for adjournment.

In her ruling, Justice Abdulmalik granted the application and adjourned the matter to April 15 and 16 for trial.

The Department of State Services (DSS) had earlier arraigned Malami and his son on a five-count charge bordering on terrorism and unlawful possession of firearms.

In the charge marked FHC/ABJ/CR/63/2026 and filed before the court in Abuja, Malami was accused of refusing to prosecute suspected terrorism financiers whose case files were allegedly forwarded to him while he served as Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice.

The defendants were also accused of storing firearms at their residence in the Gesse Phase II Area of the Birnin Kebbi Local Government Area in Kebbi State without lawful authority.

According to the DSS, Malami allegedly abetted terrorism financing by failing to prosecute suspected financiers, an offense said to be contrary to Section 26(2) of the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.

In counts two to five, Malami and his son were charged with unlawful possession of a Sturm Magnum 17-0101 firearm, 16 Redstar AAA 5’20 live cartridges, and 27 expended Redstar AAA 5’20 cartridges.

The offenses are said to be punishable under the provisions of the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022, and the Firearms Act, 2004.

The DSS handed over the prosecution of the case to the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation on March 4, when the matter was initially slated for the commencement of a full hearing.

Peter Obi: Okpebholo has village mentality, Oshiomhole’s stooge in Edo-Afenifere chieftain

0

Dr. Akin Fapohunda, Director of Research at the pan-Yoruba socio-political group Afenifere has criticized Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo, accusing him of operating under the influence of former governor Adams Oshiomhole.

He also urged former presidential candidate Peter Obi to prioritize his personal safety amid what he described as growing political violence in Nigeria.

Fapohunda made the remarks during an interview with Symfoni TV released on Monday, where he described Okpebholo as having a “village mentality” and alleged that the Edo governor rose to power through the backing of Oshiomhole.

According to him, Okpebholo’s leadership reflects the strong political influence once exercised by the late Ibadan political figure, Lamidi Adedibu, in Oyo State politics.

He said, “The reign of whoever it was, the governor of Edo State, I can’t even pronounce his name (Monday Okpebholo). The man just has a village mentality. He’s sincere in what he’s doing; I can’t fault him.

“He was put there by and catapulted by Adams Oshiomhole. And he’s doing his bidding just like Adedibu in those days in Oyo. Adedibu could do anything in those days. Okpebholo can also do the same thing too.

“Peter Obi should protect himself and not just die in vain. If he dies, nothing will happen. There will be little riots here and there, and that will be the end.”

2027: ‘If Peter Obi is assassinated, nothing will happen, like in the case of Bola Ige’- Afenifere Chieftain

0

The Director of Research of the Yoruba socio-cultural organization, Afenifere, Akin Fapoumda, has advised former presidential candidate Peter Obi to prioritize his personal security, warning that political violence remains a serious threat in Nigeria.

Fapounda said that if Obi were assassinated, the reaction might be limited, drawing a comparison with the killing of former Attorney General of the Federation Bola Ige, whose death in 2001 he claimed did not lead to far-reaching consequences.

Speaking during an interview with Symfoni, the Afenifere chieftain argued that political assassinations have occurred in different parts of the world, citing the killing of Robert F. Kennedy during his presidential campaign in the United States.

“Robert Kennedy was shot at a campaign event. He was an attorney general then trying to run for the presidency and was shot, so assassination is not a big deal when you have contesting powers that are not civilized,” he said.

Fapounda also criticized the political climate in Edo State, describing it as troubling while commenting on the conduct of the state government.

He said, “The reign of the Edo State governor is something else; the man has a village mentality, and he is sincere in what he’s doing. I can’t fault him. He was catapulted there by Adams Oshiomhole, and he’s doing the bidding. It’s just like Lamidi Adedibu in Ibadan those days.”

Questioning security lapses in the state, Fapounda said he was surprised that a group of about 30 people could allegedly attack vehicles near the residence of former national chairman of the All Progressives Congress, John Odigie-Oyegun.

“Oyegun’s house was next to Government House from what I heard; that street ought to have been cordoned off routinely. How come 30 people were able to raid vehicles? Once you have the power of the state, you can do anything. It’s a very bad thing to be insulting our intelligence to say it’s inter-party and all that,” he said.

Fapoumda maintained that if a high-profile political figure such as Obi were attacked, the aftermath might only involve public condemnation.

“If any of them were shot, what would have happened? Nothing. Even if Peter Obi was shot, nothing would have happened. Bola Ige was shot, and nothing happened. They would condemn it as a dastardly act and promise to bring those responsible to book. Will anybody resign because of it?” he said.

He urged Obi to take necessary precautions, adding that political leaders must ensure their safety in the face of potential threats.

Crude prices drop for first time since Iran war after Trump signals end

0

Global crude oil prices fell on Tuesday for the first time since the escalation of the Iran-United States-Israel war on February 28, 2026.

Checks by Nigerian Newssphere showed that the Brent and West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude benchmarks declined to $91.11 and $86.93 per barrel, respectively, after previously trading close to $100 per barrel.

The drop followed remarks by the President of the United States, Donald Trump, who suggested that the ongoing conflict with Iran could soon come to an end.

Speaking in an interview with CBN News on Monday, Trump said, “I think the war is very complete, pretty much,” adding that the United States was “very far ahead of schedule.”

His comments triggered a swift reaction in the oil market, with WTI crude slipping below $90 per barrel on Monday.

The decline follows nearly ten days of rising crude prices, which had surged from around $67 per barrel amid the conflict involving Iran, the United States, and Israel.

The escalation had disrupted activities around the strategic Strait of Hormuz shipping route and led to the shutdown of some refineries in Saudi Arabia and Qatar, contributing to the earlier spike in global oil prices.

As a ripple effect of the global crude oil price surge, Dangote Refinery hiked its petrol price at least three times, leading to a massive retail price rise for Nigerians.

Nigerian Govt orders immediate shutdown of ARAP factory in Ogun

The federal government has directed the immediate closure of African Refractory and Allied Products Company (ARAP) in Ogun State over alleged unsafe working conditions that may endanger employees.

The order was issued by the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, following an inspection carried out by the Occupational Safety and Health Department of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment.

The inspection was conducted at the company’s facility located along the Ikorodu–Sagamu Expressway in Ogijo, Ogun State.

In a statement issued by the ministry’s Head of Press and Public Relations, Annah Daniel, the government said a Prohibition Notice had been served on the company, leading to the immediate shutdown of the factory pending the outcome of a comprehensive investigation.

According to the ministry, the decision followed several complaints alleging unsafe conditions at the facility, particularly the exposure of workers to silica dust, a hazardous substance associated with severe occupational health risks.

Preliminary findings from the inspection also raised concerns about regulatory compliance, including issues surrounding the renewal of the company’s operational license and inconsistencies between its officially declared activities and its current production operations.

The ministry added that the issues identified may constitute violations of Nigeria’s Factories Act, particularly Section 30, which stipulates safety measures for workers exposed to harmful substances in industrial environments.

Reacting to the development, Onyejeocha said halting operations at the facility was necessary to protect workers and prevent further exposure to potential health hazards while investigations continue.

“The action has been taken in the interest of protecting workers and preventing further risks,” she said.

The minister also disclosed that the ministry had set up a joint inspection and investigative team to evaluate the company’s compliance with occupational safety and health standards.

She noted that further directives would be issued after the investigation is concluded.

Reiterating the government’s stance, Onyejeocha warned that violations of workplace safety regulations would not be tolerated, stressing that safeguarding the health, safety, and welfare of Nigerian workers remains a key priority.

The development comes amid increasing concerns among labor stakeholders about workplace safety in Nigeria’s industrial sector and renewed calls for stricter enforcement of occupational health and safety regulations.

Mbappe will hope to strengthen his Ballon d’Or chances by guiding Madrid to both the La Liga and UEFA Champions League titles, as well as leading France at the 2026 World Cup.

Topping the list is Harry Kane, who is currently the leading favorite to win the 2026 Ballon d’Or. The England national football team captain has been in sensational form for Bayern Munich, scoring 45 goals and providing five assists in 37 appearances in all competitions this season. Kane has already helped the German club secure the DFL-Supercup and is on course to win the Bundesliga title.

Trump announces date to end Iran war

0

The President of the United States, Donald Trump, has said he believes the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran could end soon.

Speaking during a news briefing on Monday, Trump warned that any renewed aggression from Iran would be met with even stronger military action.

Responding to a reporter who asked what he meant by the war ending “soon,” and whether he expected it to conclude this week, Trump replied, “No, but soon.”

Commenting on the timeline of the military operation, the US president described the current phase as the beginning of efforts to build a “new country,” while claiming that Iran no longer possesses significant naval or air power.

“We could call it a tremendous success right now, as we leave here, I could call it, or we could go further, and we’re going to go further,” he said.

DAILY POST reports that the crisis began on February 28 when the United States and its ally, Israel, launched air strikes on Iran that reportedly resulted in the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader.

The conflict has since led to multiple casualties Iranian civilians and caused extensive damage to infrastructure across the country. The United States has also confirmed the deaths of some of its military personnel involved in the fighting.
