Ekiti 2026: One Injured as APC, ADC supporters clash

0

Tension flared on Saturday at Polling Unit 4, Ward 2, in Ilawe-Ekiti during the ongoing Ekiti State governorship election as supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) reportedly clashed over allegations of vote buying.

The confrontation briefly disrupted voting activities and left one ADC supporter injured. The victim, who reportedly sustained a head injury during the altercation, was taken to a hospital for treatment.

ADC governorship candidate, Dare Bejide, who cast his vote at the polling unit, alleged that attempts were being made to influence voters through cash distribution in the area.

According to him, the situation escalated after his supporters moved to challenge the alleged distribution of money to voters.

Bejide further claimed that an APC chieftain arrived at the polling unit in a Toyota jeep with cash allegedly intended for voters, triggering the confrontation.

He alleged that efforts to stop the distribution led to a heated exchange involving party supporters and security personnel.

“One of my aides was attacked by security men brought in by them, and he has been taken to the hospital,” Bejide said.

The ADC candidate added that security agencies were alerted to the alleged presence of cash at the polling unit, a development he said created panic and disorder in the area.

Despite the incident, Bejide praised officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for their conduct, noting that the election process had been peaceful and orderly before the clash.

“The electoral personnel have been very diligent, and everything was going on very well before the pandemonium started,” he said.

He noted that calm was eventually restored after additional security operatives were deployed to the area, allowing voting to continue under heightened security, although tension remained among party supporters.

Why EFCC sent me invitation- VeryDarkMan

Social media personality Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, has confirmed receiving an invitation from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) following a petition filed against him.

The petition, submitted by legal practitioner Blessing Agbomhere of Blessing Agbomhere & Partners, called for a comprehensive investigation into the financial activities, sponsorship arrangements, and funding sources of both VeryDarkMan and activist lawyer Deji Adeyanju.

Reacting via his social media platforms, VeryDarkMan described the planned investigation as an attempt to silence individuals who speak out against the government.

According to him, the petition was orchestrated by members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as a means of suppressing criticism of the administration.

“They want to stop us from speaking against this evil government that has failed to protect the lives of Nigerians. So, they used their people to write petitions,” he wrote on Instagram.

The EFCC has yet to publicly comment on the allegations or the claims made by the social media activist

Atiku, Obi don’t want to hear good news on Nigeria’s record $51bn foreign reserves growth- Presidency

0

Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to President Bola Tinubu, Bayo Onanuga, has said former presidential candidates Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi are unwilling to acknowledge what he described as positive economic developments under the current administration.

Onanuga stated that Nigeria’s foreign reserves climbed to $51.04 billion as of June 18, marking the highest level recorded in 17 years.

According to him, the last time the country’s reserves were close to that figure was in January 2009, when they stood at $50.5 billion.

In a post on his X handle, Onanuga said: “Nigeria’s foreign reserves rose to $51.04 billion on June 18, the highest level in 17 years. In January 2009, the reserves stood at $50.5 billion.

“This is the good news Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar and other presidential candidates don’t want to hear.

“As far as they are concerned, President Tinubu has done nothing since he came to office.

“Yet stubborn facts of the administration’s solid achievements keep hitting them in the face.”

The presidential aide maintained that the rise in the country’s foreign reserves reflects the achievements of the Tinubu administration despite criticisms from opposition figures.

2027: He’s oppressing 99%, what happened in Indonesia possible in Nigeria- Dino Melaye warns Tinubu, APC

0

Former federal lawmaker Senator Dino Melaye has expressed concern that Nigeria could face serious political unrest if the 2027 presidential election is manipulated in favour of President Bola Tinubu.

Speaking in a video posted on his Facebook page on Saturday, Melaye vowed that any attempt to rig the election would be strongly resisted by the opposition and the Nigerian people.

According to him, efforts to undermine the electoral process could trigger widespread resistance and lead to unforeseen political consequences.

“My fear is very simple: that Tinubu may lead this country to a warpath because he will try to rig, but there will be vehement resistance,” Melaye said.

“At the end of the day, we may have a president who will run away because we are not backing down. We are with the people and we will speak as a people. Those in power in this country are less than one per cent of the population.

“It is an absurdity that one per cent is oppressing 99 per cent. We will prove that what happened in Indonesia is possible in Nigeria.”

The former senator insisted that the opposition would not remain silent in the face of any attempt to manipulate the outcome of the 2027 elections, stressing that democratic principles must be upheld.

President Bola Tinubu has approved a fresh six-month tenure extension for the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Adewale Adeniyi.

The approval was disclosed in a statement issued on Friday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

During the extension period, Adeniyi is expected to work closely with the NCS Board to oversee the promotion of qualified officers to the rank of Comptroller of Customs. He will also supervise the compulsory retirement of officers who have reached the age of 60 or completed 35 years of service.

2026 World Cup: Why you can’t blame Ronaldo for Portugal’s draw against DR Congo- Piers Morgan

0

British broadcaster Piers Morgan has defended Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo following his side’s 1-1 draw against DR Congo in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Morgan argued that midfielder Bruno Fernandes delivered a poorer performance than Ronaldo during the encounter, insisting the Manchester United star struggled to influence the game.

Speaking to Sports Uncensored, Morgan said: “Have you watched the Portugal game? I thought the one who had the really bad game was Bruno Fernandes.

“I think Declan Rice was [the Premier League Player of the Season]. I thought he [Fernandes] barely had a good kick in the game against DR Congo.

“Ronaldo, playing as a no. 9 rather than a flying winger. He needs the service from the team, but he did not get the service.”

Morgan maintained that Ronaldo was not adequately supplied by his teammates throughout the match, making it difficult for the veteran forward to have a significant impact as Portugal were held to a draw by DR Congo.

Confusion as IPOB suspends Nnamdi Kanu as leader

Nnamdi Kanu

There is confusion as the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has announced the suspension of the office of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, as well as the position of the director of Radio Biafra.

The decision followed a full-house meeting of the IPOB Directorate held on Wednesday, during which the leadership reviewed intelligence reports relating to communications allegedly originating from Kanu while in detention at Sokoto prison.

In a statement issued on Thursday and signed by Mazi Chikadibia Edoziem, Head of the Directorate of State (DOS), the group said the DOS would henceforth administer the affairs of the organization and oversee its activities.

The leadership stressed that IPOB was “formed and nurtured by a group of Biafrans in the diaspora (not by any single individual)” and maintained that no single person possesses the authority to dissolve the Directorate of State, which it described as the organization’s highest leadership structure.

According to the statement, the decision was taken after the leadership became “mindful that certain unguarded communications from Sokoto prison to those in Biafraland have caused unnecessary arrests and death of IPOB family members in Biafraland.”

The group also noted that Kanu’s visitors and activities were under close surveillance by the Department of State Services (DSS). It further expressed concern over an alleged plan by some individuals to establish a new militia, warning that such a move could spark another wave of violence in the region.

IPOB said the suspension was necessary to “prevent unchecked actions, reckless assumption of authority and unguarded utterances from resulting in the reckless arrests, torture and needless death of Biafran youths.”

The statement added that criminal acts carried out in the name of the suspended office would no longer be attributed to the organization, declaring that “IPOB shall henceforth not be held accountable for actions of individuals or groups of individuals not holding any active position within IPOB.”

The development comes a day after reports emerged that Kanu had dissolved the third administration of the Directorate of State.

Acting under his claimed authority, Kanu was reported to have inaugurated a fourth administration of the DOS and appointed United States-based Mazi Chris Nwaọgụ as the new Head of the Directorate of State.

A statement issued by IPOB spokesperson Emma Powerful said Nwaọgụ was mandated to immediately assume responsibility for the administration, coordination, and day-to-day management of the organization’s affairs under Kanu’s direct authority.

The Directorate of State was established by Kanu in 2012 as the administrative arm of IPOB. It has previously been headed by Dr. Justin Akujieze in the United States, Mazi Uchenna Asiegbu in Spain, and Chika Edoziem in Switzerland, who was appointed to lead the third administration in March 2017 during Kanu’s earlier detention at Kuje Prison.

Nnamdi Kanu’s comes barely months after he was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Nigerian government.

God’ll sustain Tinubu in power until 2031- Minister of Works Umahi

President Tinbu

Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, has expressed confidence that President Bola Tinubu will continue to receive divine guidance to lead Nigeria until 2031, saying God will help the administration overcome the nation’s challenges and advance development.

Umahi made the remark on Thursday while inspecting ongoing bridge projects in Lagos State, including the Carter Bridge, which is scheduled for reconstruction from next week.

According to the minister, Tinubu’s government will continue to enjoy divine support in tackling critical national issues, particularly insecurity.

“The same God that brought him is going to be there to solve all the problems,” Umahi said, while urging Nigerians to support the administration’s efforts to address security challenges across the country.

He stressed that no leader wishes for instability during their tenure but noted that responsible leadership requires confronting challenges whenever they arise.

“There is no leader who will not want his reign to be peaceful, but when crises come, the leader must confront them. That is exactly what we are doing,” he said.

Umahi added that regardless of whether the country’s security problems are politically motivated, he believes Tinubu will be granted the wisdom and strength needed to resolve them and tackle other national concerns.

The minister also expressed optimism that all projects initiated by the current administration would be completed successfully.

“Your hands that have started this will complete it,” Umahi stated, maintaining that the government remains convinced that Tinubu’s leadership enjoys divine favour.

Speaking on the Carter Bridge reconstruction, Umahi disclosed that the project is expected to be completed within three years.

“It is within our five-year plan,” he added.
