UCL: Ancelotti names title winner

0

Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti has backed Paris Saint-Germain to win this season’s UEFA Champions League.

PSG reached the semi-finals after eliminating Liverpool FC with a dominant 4-0 aggregate victory in the quarter-finals, marking the second consecutive year they have knocked out the Premier League side.

The French champions will now face Bayern Munich in the last four, while Arsenal FC are set to battle Atlético Madrid in the other semi-final clash.

Speaking in an interview with Il Giornale, Ancelotti said PSG have what it takes to go all the way and successfully defend their title according to Metro.

“I’ve seen some amazing high-scoring games, like Atlético Madrid vs Barcelona and Bayern Munich vs Real Madrid, which were exciting for the fans,” he said.

“The Champions League is a tournament that doesn’t always favor top teams like Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Manchester City, but it remains a competition where teams can improve and grow.”

Insecurity: Bandits will soon infiltrate Nigeria’s National Assembly — Baba Yusuf

0

Political strategist and Group Chief Executive Officer of Global Investment and Trade Company, Baba Yusuf, has raised alarm over the worsening security situation in Nigeria, warning that bandits could soon find their way into the National Assembly if urgent action were not taken.

Speaking during an interview on Arise News, Yusuf said the growing influence of bandits, particularly in northern Nigeria, has reached a troubling level where some communities now pay them taxes and seek their intervention in resolving disputes.

According to him, while citizens continue to lose their lives in attacks, political actors are more focused on exploiting the crisis for political gains rather than addressing it decisively.

Yusuf noted that the activities of the armed groups have become increasingly audacious, with reports of them killing soldiers, impersonating military personnel, and engaging in negotiations with authorities without facing consequences.

He said the attackers now operate openly, sometimes issuing advance notices of planned attacks and carrying them out without resistance.

“We are already at a dangerous point,” Yusuf stated. “If you assess insecurity not by isolated incidents but by its overall impact, you will see a steady expansion into areas previously considered safe, including parts of Niger and Kwara states.”

He also cited repeated attacks in Benue and Plateau states, noting that assurances by government officials have failed to deter further violence.

“They are daring the state and taunting the nation. After killing soldiers, they wear military uniforms and even participate in mediation processes, only to return to their bases without consequences,” he said.

Yusuf expressed concern over what he described as a growing level of public reliance on these groups, warning that such dynamics could further erode state authority.

“People are beginning to trust them for protection and conflict resolution. If this trend continues unchecked, it could escalate to the point where bandits gain political influence,” he added.

He called for a unified national response, urging both the ruling party and the opposition to treat insecurity as a non-partisan, existential threat rather than a political tool.

“This is a crisis that demands collective action across party lines. If we fail to act decisively, the consequences will be far-reaching,” Yusuf warned.

Stop deceiving Nigerians with ‘renewed shame, nonsense’—Kogbara slams Tinubu

0

Niger Delta activist and former BBC correspondent Donu Kogbara has criticized the administration of President Bola Tinubu, describing its “Renewed Hope Agenda” as “renewed shame.”

Kogbara argued that insecurity has worsened under the current government, claiming that virtually every form of security challenge has manifested during its tenure.

Speaking during an appearance on Arise News, she urged government officials, particularly those benefiting from the administration, to stop what she described as misleading narratives about the Renewed Hope Agenda.

According to her, the slogan does not reflect the realities faced by Nigerians, insisting it should be rebranded as “renewed shame and nonsense.”

She said, “First of all, I did mention Goodluck Jonathan, and I want to make it very clear that I think there’s been a steady downward trajectory since then. I’m not putting him on the same level. Things are getting worse, much, much worse.

“And this Renewed Hope, you people had better stop trying to deceive everyone. It is renewed shame, nonsense.”

DSS arrests suspected terrorist who threatened student in Abuja

The Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday heard how operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) tracked and arrested a suspected terror operative, John Jude Agbo, accused of sending threatening messages to schools in the Federal Capital Territory.

Testifying as the first prosecution witness, DSS operative Michael Jego told the court that the agency received petitions from three Abuja-based schools in 2024 over text messages threatening to kill students and teachers, as well as destroy school property.

Jego said investigations led his team to deploy technology that traced the suspect to Otukpo in Benue State, where he was arrested. According to him, a Tecno Android phone and SIM card allegedly used to send the messages were recovered from Agbo at the point of arrest.

Agbo, who was arraigned on March 17 on a two-count charge marked FHC/ABJ/CR/06/2026, is being prosecuted under the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022, and the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) (Amendment) Act, 2024.

In a case summary, the DSS alleged that the defendant used multiple GSM numbers to send threatening SMS messages to Premier International School, The Regent Secondary School, and Oakland International British School in Abuja.

The prosecution said the messages warned of imminent attacks, claiming it would take less than a minute to carry out the threats against both students and staff.

Led in evidence by prosecuting counsel, Dr. Calistus Eze, Jego further told the court that the defendant was brought to Abuja after his arrest and gave a statement in the presence of a lawyer from the Legal Aid Council of Nigeria.

The prosecution tendered several exhibits, including the recovered phone, petitions from the affected schools, a compact disc containing audio-visual recordings of the suspect’s interview, and his extra-judicial statement. The court admitted all the items without objection from the defense counsel, Hamza Dantani.

Although Agbo admitted being familiar with the Tecno phone, he denied ownership.

Under cross-examination, Jego acknowledged that the petitions did not mention the defendant by name and that the phone numbers used to send the messages were provided by the schools. However, he added that the defendant admitted involvement in composing the messages and was arrested with the device in question.

Following the testimony, the prosecution requested an adjournment to present additional witnesses and evidence, a request not opposed by the defense.

Justice Joyce Abdulmalik subsequently adjourned the case to May 12 for continuation of trial.

Trump reacts as Iran announces full opening of Strait of Hormuz

0

Iran has announced that the Strait of Hormuz is now fully open to all commercial vessels for the duration of an ongoing ceasefire.

The country’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Aragchi, disclosed the development, noting that the move aligns with the ceasefire arrangement involving Lebanon.

Reacting to the announcement, US President Donald Trump welcomed the decision. Posting on Truth Social, Trump wrote: “Iran has just announced that the Strait of Iran is fully open and ready for full passage. Thank you!”

Despite the reopening, Iran’s deputy foreign minister insisted that Tehran does not support a temporary ceasefire. According to him, the country is pushing for a comprehensive resolution to the conflict across the region.

Meanwhile, reports indicate that celebrations have erupted in parts of Lebanon following the announcement of a 10-day ceasefire aimed at facilitating negotiations between Israeli and Lebanese officials.

The ceasefire comes after intense military activity, with Israeli forces carrying out heavy bombardments in southern Lebanon just hours before the truce took effect on Thursday night.

Terrorists can’t repent—Nnamdi Kanu’s lawyer, Ejimakor slams Nigerian govt over release 700 repentant Boko Haram

0

Aloy Ejimakor, legal consultant to incarcerated leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has said terrorists are incapable of genuine repentance or rehabilitation.

Ejimakor made the assertion in a post on his verified X handle on Friday, urging the federal government to halt what he described as “self-deception.”

He was reacting to reports on the planned rehabilitation and reintegration of former Boko Haram members who have reportedly renounced violence.

Nigerian Newssphere recalls that over 700 “repentant” terrorists have been declared ready for reintegration into society after undergoing deradicalization and rehabilitation.

According to African Independent Television (AIT), the Coordinator of Operation Safe Corridor, Brigadier-General Yusuf Ali, disclosed this during a media tour of the Deradicalization, Rehabilitation, and Reintegration Centre in Gombe, Northeast Nigeria.

Reacting, Ejimakor insisted that the program is misguided, arguing that terrorists only feign repentance when captured.

“Stop the self-deception. Terrorists don’t repent and can’t be rehabilitated,” he wrote.

“Terrorism is a radical religious/political doctrine that admits of no repentance or rehabilitation. When caught, terrorists simply fold and pretend so that they can infiltrate and do more harm from inside.”
