Ameh was said to have been a guest of an oil company toyshop and his family when she suddenly collapsed.

She was rushed to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation’s hospital but passed on before they arrived at the facility.

ASUU strike: Workers to embark on 2-day protest against FG

0

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) will on Tuesday, July 26, 2022 embark on a two-day nationwide protest in solidarity with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and other affiliate unions over the lingering five-months industrial action in public universities in Nigeria.

In a circular sent to state councils of NLC by the national secretariat and Chairman released to Nigerian Newssphere on Sunday, national president, Comrade Ayuba Wabba told fellow workers that the national days of protest was in support of unions in Nigeria’s public universities who are fighting for quality education.

He said the solidarity protest was part of moves to get students back to school and will last till Wednesday, July 27, 2022.
“In line with the decisions of the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the Nigeria Labour Congress held on the 30th of June 2022, we have scheduled as follows the national days of protest to get our children back to school and support our unions in Nigeria’s public universities fighting for quality education.

“You are requested to immediately convene the meetings of your SAC to disseminate this information and to fully mobilize workers in the states for this very important protest for good governance,” Comrade Wabba said in the circular jointly signed by the NLC general secretary, Comrade Emmanuel Ugboaja.

In another development, the NLC has accused the federal government of not negotiating in good faith to resolve the crisis in Nigeria’s public universities.

Comrade Wabba in a separate statement on Sunday, expressed concern about reports in the media that the federal government may have rejected its own Prof. Nimi-Briggs Committee on the premise of alleged disparity between the pay rise allocated to university teaching staff and the non-teaching staff.

The statement reads in part, “It is a shocker for us to read from the media snippets of a report of what is strictly the product of a negotiation between the federal government committee and the concerned trade unions.

“Our first response is to aver that this development gravely betrays and undermines the principle of negotiation in good faith as it manifests crass disrespect by government for trade unions in Nigeria’s universities. Second, the circumstances surrounding the work of the Nimi-Briggs Committee also portrays the disposition of government as mortally unserious unfortunately in such a grievous matter as the locking up of public universities for nearly five months.

Recall that for Months now Federal Government and ASUU have continue to exchange accusations and counter accusations on previous agreements without making any headway.

Osinbajo hospitalised after surgical procedure over leg injury

The Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo has been hospitalised after a successful surgical procedure, his spokesman Laolu Akande has revealed.

Akande disclosed this in a statement on Saturday, saying Professor Osinbajo was scheduled to undergo a surgical procedure.

This, according to him, is a result of recurrent pain in the Vice President’s leg probably from an injury he sustained while playing squash.

The Vice President’s spokesman, however, stated that Professor Osinbajo’s doctors would give an update on the treatment at a later time.

“VP Osinbajo is in the hospital today for a surgical procedure on account of a recurrent pain in the leg possibly sustained from an injury while playing squash,” Akande said.
“His (Osinbajo’s) doctors would give an update of the treatment later today.”

Professor Osinbajo has also confirmed his health status via his verified Twitter account

The operation was carried out by team of Doctors in Dunchess Hopsital Lagos

Osun election: How Votes-buying, violence would decide winner

0

As voters in Osun governorship election decide who would be piloting the affairs of the state in the next political dispensation; vote-buying, electoral violence would likely determine the winner.

In a state with lowest unemployment rate of 11.7 per cent according to National Bureau of Statistics(NBS) 2020 Data, the possibility of vote-buying would likely seal-through the minds of voters.

Similarly, with the National poverty level drastically increasing, vote-buying would likely outperform candidate’s competence and track-records. For instance by 2020 national poverty level had increased to 72.32 per cent, according to the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In 2021, the World Bank said the number of persons living in poverty in Nigeria would increase to 79 per cent.

Vote-buying or voters inducement has been a major political instrument in Nigeria’s political landscape since first Republic, 1963.

From inducing voters with food items to Money, the idea has been corruptable instrument to get electoral victory in Nigeria.

However, anyone that could swing these cities: Osogbo, Ede, Ife, Ilesa, Ila, Iree, Ijebu-Jesa, Ikire, Ikirun, Ejigbo, Ilobu, Iwo, Okuku, Igbajo, and Esa-Oke to his favour would mostly emerge victorious in today’s Osun Election.

Osun Election in retrospect

In the First and Second republics, majority of the indigenes were followers of Chief Obafemi Awolowo. The state was carved out of the old Oyo State on August 27, 1999 by the military government under General Ibrahim Babangida. Following a tour of the old Oyo State, the military leader declared that some states were too large, a hint of his intent to split the state.

In the Third Republic, the short-lived civilian administration in the state was headed by the late Alhaji Isiaka Adeleke of Serubawon (Bully Them) fame.

The state had a full dose of progressive governance when Chief Bisi Akande, chieftain of the defunct Alliance for Democracy (AD), was in the saddle. The beat stopped in 2003, following the political earthquake that swept across the Southwest. Only Asiwaju Bola Tinubu survived among the six AD governors in the hitherto poll-confident region.

Akande was displaced by Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). After four years, Chief Rauf Aregbesola, the symbol of Oranmiyan Group, won the governorship poll on the platform of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN). But, the loser was declared winner by the electoral commission. The battle shifted from the ballot box to the court. The mandate was restored in 2010.

Although Aregbesola was re-elected in 2014, his party nearly lost the poll in 2018. His successor won by a slim margin. It was a narrow escape for the ruling party.

Today’s exercise is still about the two major parties: the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the PDP. Other mushroom parties cannot spring any surprise. The 13 smaller parties lack formidable structures to cause any upset

Yet, the election is a repeat match between Governor Gboyega Oyetola and his arch rival, dancing Senator Ademola Adeleke. Both men were once locked in a battle for the Government House in 2018.

There was tension. And controversy followed, as the election was declared inconclusive.

Oyetola eventually triumphed at the supplementary poll, to the chagrin of Adeleke, who was disowned at the last minute – a critical moment – by big chieftains of his from Ife-Ijesa axis who loathed his candidature, led by the grassroots politician, Senator Iyiola Omisore.

But, APC would have even won on first ballot, if it had put its house in order. Reconciliation had failed in the party in the aftermath of the governorship primary. The crisis was compounded by the defection of some chieftains, including a former Secretary to the State Government (SSG), ‘Sheu’ Moshood Adeoti, who ran on the platform of the African Democratic Party (ADP) and got over 3,000 votes, in vain. The involvement of Adeoti in the election resulted in the split of the APC.

2022:Osun Decides, Matters arising

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and security agencies have assured that the election will be violence-free and devoid of any form of inducement by political parties and politicians.

However, there are strong fears from observers of political events that today’s election could be exposed to massive rigging and unprecedented vote buying if urgent steps are not taken to curb the trend.

Nigerian Newssphere gathered that unlike the strategy deployed during the governorship election in Ekiti State, some politicians have devised new means to induce voters.

It was further gathered that for some days now, some parties have been wooing potential voters with cash and promises of appointment. Cash payments may not be done near the polling units in some cases as was done in Ekiti and past elections.

Also some All Progressives Congress, APC, and Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, governors are said to be on ground to provide support for their respective candidates as a way of swinging the votes in their parties’ favour.

The parties, Newssphere gathered, are said to have earmarked between N2,000 and N15,000 to induce voters and may increase the amount to N20,000 in strong holds of the opposition.

A source, who spoke to Saturday Vanguard, said: “I heard that vote buying started before the election. The politicians are devising another style to reach out to the electorate, they may not induce voters on the day of the election. They have cornered so many communities and leaders and have given them money. They strategically positioned their link men in these communities.”

It was further alleged that the leading parties have perfected plans to out manouvre each other at the poll.

Expressing worry over this development, a member of the Centre for Democracy and Development, CDD, Election Analysis Centre (EAC), Prof. Victor Isumonah, said at the organisation’s Pre-Election Observation Report on the Osun governorship election that Osun may be worse than Ekiti.

Isumonah said: “This was evident in the Ekiti governorship election and likely to be worse in the Osun State Governorship election. During the 2018 election, three men were arrested for vote-buying by police officers and the International Centre for Investigative Reporting, ICIR, recorded instances of PDP agents partaking in such activities.

“CDD-EAC observers during the June 2022 Ekiti State governorship elections noted several instances of vote buying and called for stronger monitoring by INEC.”

Looming Violence, security assurance

Aside vote buying, residents are worried that the election may be marred by violence.
This worry was borne out of the remarks and desperation of some political actors in the two major parties.

It was gathered that there have been influx of people, who are suspected to be political thugs and cultists in Osogbo, the capital of the

Army personnel take over highways
As a way of preventing breakdown of law and order, Army personnel have mounted check points on major entry points across the state.

Soldiers were seen in strategic areas like Gbongon, Shekona, Ede, Abere and Osogbo, the state capital frisking commuters and commercial buses.

IGP deploys 21,000 police officers for poll
Also, the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba said 21,000 police officers would be deployed for the Osun July 16 governorship election.

The IGP, however, said the deployment was not to intimidate residents but to prevent miscreants from highjacking or disrupting the election process.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the Osun election, Johnson Kokumo, said three surveillance helicopters and 37 units with a unit having about 63 men would be on duty during the poll.

Speaking during a radio programme on Fresh FM in Osogbo, Kokumo, who urged residents not to panic when they observe the helicopters flying around, said maximum security would be provided during and after the poll.

He said about 2,231 riot policemen were also said to have been deployed for the election, in addition to the 21,000 policemen deployed for the exercise.

“The Inspector General of Police, Alkali Baba, has done really well for Osun State. He sent three helicopters for surveillance. They have been flying around the state for security purposes.

15 parties in the poll

Of the 18 registered political parties, 15 fielded candidates for the poll.
The candidates taking part in the exercise include Governor Gboyega Oyetola of the APC; Senator Ademola Adeleke of the PDP; a former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yusuf Lasun representing the Labour Party; Dr Oyegoke Omigbodun of the Social Democratic Party, SDP; and Dr Akin Ogunbiyi of the Accord Party.

INEC registers 1.9m voters, delivers 335,298 PVCs
Meanwhile the INEC has put the number of registration areas in Osun at 332 with 1,955,657 registered voters and 335,298 Permanent Voter Cards collected so far.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC, in Osun State, Professor Abdulganiyu Raji said his office received 5,305 BVAS from INEC Headquarters on June 24, 2022 adding that the configuration of the BVAS was done at Abuja Headquarters.

Osun Election: Why Davido Unfollowed Portable on social media platforms

0

As Osun state voters, prepare for Satuday’s governorship election, David Adeleke, music star better known as Davido, has unfollowed Habeeb Okikiola, known as Portable, on all social media platforms.

Davido and Portable are currently in Osun campaigning ahead of Saturday’s governorship election.

While Davido is campaigning for Senator Ademola Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who is his uncle, Portable is rooting for Governor Gboyega Oyetola of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Both Adeleke and Oyetola squared off in 2018.

The singers featured prominently in the final rallies of the APC and PDP for the 2022 election.

Davido caused a stir on social media after he was spotted leading prayers ahead of the campaign rally.
While there were reactions to the picture where Portable off his shorts and clothes while holding the symbol of APC, ‘the broom’ on a statute of the late Obafemi Awolowo, Premier of Western Region.
His link up with the governor obviously didn’t go unnoticed by Davido’s fans who promised to unfollow him and report his account.

Reacting to the backlash, Portable told critics to allow him enjoy the proceeds of his political endorsement in peace.
He said he is obliged to support any political party that pays him for endorsement stunts.

The singer recalled how the PDP neglected him even after he made a song titled: “Ademola Adeleke” to promote their governorship candidate four years ago.

As IoT beckons, Pantami assures of proactive regulation

0

Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Prof. Isa Ibrahim Pantami, today (14th July 2022) in Lagos, assured the nation that Nigeria’s telecom regulatory framework has been designed to address the challenges that may arrive with the advancement of the Internet of Things (IoT) in the country.

Pantami, who spoke at the twin event – Stakeholders Consultative Forum on Regulatory Roadmap for IoT Ecosystem in Nigeria, hosted by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC); and presentation of two books authored by the Minister, declared that Nigeria has already exhibited its preparedness to harness the potentials of this new service, as demonstrated in the reduction in incidences of cybercrimes in Nigeria over the past two years.

He emphasized the need for the type of consultations and brainstorming being hosted for IoT, as the International Data Cooperation (IDC) revealed that, “By 2025, there will be about 46.1 billion IoT devices that are going to be interconnected globally…and through this connection, the data to be generated will be up to 79.4 zeta bites.”

At a gathering that featured presentations by local and international experts, with the Secretary of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), Houlin Zhao, in virtual participation, Pantami said IoT is crucial to present day emergent technologies considering its connectedness to devices in facilitating productivity, minimize waste as well as ensure a faster decision making process where massive amount of data can be analysed and presented for decision making.

Earlier in an address of welcome, the Executive Vice Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the NCC, Prof. Umar Danbatta, explained that, in the process of undertaking its responsibility of regulation, the NCC has made it a consistent practice to interact with experts and key players in the industry on how best to facilitate the development of robust regulations for emergent technologies in the country.

Danbatta said this consultation presents a unique opportunity to appraise the emergence and future deployment of IoT products and services for the benefit of consumers in Nigeria.

In his goodwill message and review of one of the books authored by Pantami titled ‘Datafication of Society to Foster an Internet Economy,’ the ITU scribe, commended Nigeria’s cooperation within the international telecommunications community and how Pantami assisted in the facilitation of programmes of the ITU, including his recent chairmanship of the World Summit on Information Society at the ITU Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.

In the review of Pantami’s second book titled: ‘Cybersecurity: Initiatives for Securing a Country’, Prof. Mike Hinchey of the University of Limerik, Ireland, who doubled as keynote speaker at the event, commended the Minister, stating that the book is a bold statement that Africa is no longer waiting on the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) industry side-lines but now creating content for its institutions.

In a panel discussion, featuring experts from various sectors of the ICT industry, the challenges and prospects of IoT within the Nigerian telecom ecosystem were reviewed, with a view to preparing the country for the future application of IoT products and services.

Fresh trouble for Tinubu, Peter Obi as PDP asks Court to disqualify APC, LP over running mates replacement

0

The Peoples Democratic Party has instituted a lawsuit at the Federal High Court in Abuja, praying the court to compel the Independent National Electoral Commission to prevent the Presidential Candidates of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu and Labour Party, Peter Obi, from replacing their running mates with Senator Kashim Shettima and Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed.

The PDP is also asking the court to declare that Tinubu and Obi be disqualified unless they contest alongside their previous running mates – Kabiru Masari and Doyin Okupe.

In the originating summons, the PDP is seeking an order barring the Independent National Electoral Commission from replacing the running mates of Tinubu and Obi.

Those listed as first to seventh respondents in the case are INEC, APC, Tinubu, Masari, Labour Party, Obi and Okupe, respectively.

The PDP is asking the court to determine if by the combined interpretation of Section 142(1) of the constitution, Section 29(1), 31 and 33 of the Electoral Act 2022, and INEC’s timetable, Tinubu and Obi are bound by the submission of Masari and Okupe as their running mates.

The party also asked the court to determine if “by the combined interpretation of Section 142(1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Sections 29(1), 31, 33 of the Electoral Act 2022, the first defendant (INEC) can validly accept any change or substitution of the 4th (Masari) and 7th (Okupe) defendants as running mates of the 3rd (APC) and 6th (Labour Party) defendants.”

The PDP is also seeking five reliefs including a declaration that by the combined interpretation of Section 142(1) of the constitution, Section 29(1), 31 and 33 of the Electoral Act 2022 and INEC’s timetable, both Tinubu and Obi must be bound by their submission.

The party asked the court to rule that both Tinubu and Obi will be disqualified the moment they substitute the names of their running mates.

One of the reliefs reads, “A declaration that by the combined interpretation of Section 142(1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended), Sections 29(1), 31, 33 of the Electoral Act 2022, the 1st defendant’s (INEC’s) election timetable, the 3rd (Tinubu) and 6th (Obi) cannot validly contest the 2023 Presidential election without the 4th (Masari) and 7th (Obi) respondents as their respective running mates.”

The PDP also based its argument on the fact that the term ‘placeholder’ is unknown to Nigerian law.
