Tribunal judgement: Heavy security in Abuja as Nigerians await verdict

Security has been beefed up in and around the Appeal Court’s premises in Abuja as the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal. PEPT is set to deliver its judgement on the petition filed by angry party candidates in the last election.

According to NAN, Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force and other security personnel were sighted strategically around the premises on Wednesday morning.

Although the five-member panel of the Presidential Election Petition Court, led by Justice Haruna Tsammani, promised to televise the much-awaited event, several Nigerians are thronging into the court to witness the proceeding.

Nigerian Newssphere recalls that the Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi and his counterpart in the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Atiku Abubakar, had approached the court seeking to nullify the election of President Bola Tinubu, who contested and won under the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC.

After deliberating on the petitions for months, the court will, in less than hours, deliver its judgement on the matter.

Although the tribunal’s verdict is unlikely to be the final stage of legal wrangling over the election, as lawyers say parties can appeal to the Supreme Court for a final verdict, some activists had expressed readiness to stage protest if the verdict fails to meet their expectations.

Tinubu is currently in India for the G20 Summit.

Wike Minister of FCT

The Minister of the Federal Capital (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has been named by the All Progressives Congress, APC, as a party’s campaign council member for the November Bayelsa governorship election.

Wike, a former Rivers State governor, was recently sworn in as a minister by President Bola Tinubu and has resigned as a member of the Peoples Democratic PDP.

He fell out with the PDP in the lead-up to the February 25 presidential election.

However, APC named Wike a council member when it set up campaign councils for the Bayelsa, Kogi, and Imo governorship polls billed for later in the year.

A circular from the ruling APC listed Governor Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State as the chairman of the party’s governorship campaign council in Bayelsa with Defence Minister Abubakar Badaru; Senate President Godsdwill Akpabio and Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) George Akume as co-chairmen.

Apologize for your disorderliness- Analyst tells Edo Deputy Governor

0

The Deputy Governor of Edo state, Comrade Phillip Shuaibu has been called upon to apologize to the people of Edo and Delta states for trying to disrupt the occasion of the celebration of the 60 years of the referendum that created the Midwest Region which was held in Benin City recently.

The statement released on Tuesday in Abuja by a public affairs analyst, Mr. Odeh Ekpoma.

He said the Deputy Governor exercised poor judgment by his wanton display of brashness and disorderliness in trying to get his media team into the venue of the event without accreditation.

“It is embarrassing that the Deputy Governor does not realise the significance of the day and thought his media team was more important than the marking of the event that started the journey of the creation of the state that made it possible for him to be Deputy Governor” Mr. Ekpoma stated.

He added that it is important for Comrade Shuaibu to make a public apology to the two states and all the present and former governors who were at the event who understood the significance of the day by their presence while the Deputy Governor orchestrated a raucous scene and stormed out of the most important event to the people of Edo and Delta states.

“The Deputy Governor unfortunately displayed his ignorance of history and would otherwise have known the uniqueness of the referendum in the history of Nigeria and also displayed a lack of respect for elders as the hall was full of the who is who in the modern traditional and political class of the two states and Bayelsa state.

He concluded that this is an indication that the political parties and the public must continue to properly vet the people they pick or elect into public office.

ECN, stakeholders call for collaboration on energy efficiency policy

0
ECN and stakeholders on Energy efficiency

Efforts to enhance national energy efficiency and conservation have gained momentum as the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) emphasises the need for collaboration among stakeholders and government officials in policy-making bodies.

This collaborative approach aims to strengthen National Industrial Energy Efficiency (IEE) Policies and Regulatory Frameworks, fostering the adoption of Energy Management Systems Standards (EnMS/ESO/ISO 50001) across Nigeria.

The acting director-general of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, Mr. Joseph Sunday Olayande, highlighted the importance of this collaborative effort during a workshop focused on industrial energy efficiency policy and regulatory formation.

The workshop provided capacity building and training to government energy policymakers and regulators in Nigeria.

Olayande explained that the scope of the project encompasses various sectors of the economy, necessitating a comprehensive approach involving stakeholders such as the ministries of mines and steel, agriculture, petroleum, energy/power, transport, finance, works, ICT, science & technology, as well as the private sector.

The ECN, selected by the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) to host one of the project’s working groups, seeks to strengthen National Industrial Energy Efficiency Policies and Regulatory Frameworks in alignment with UNIDO’s standards.

Founded in 1979 and operational since 1989, the ECN plays a crucial role in strategic energy planning and coordination, disseminating information on energy development policies, and making recommendations to the government. Under this project, the ECN is tasked with duties that include conducting capacity building for policymakers, formulating energy efficiency policies for various sectors, encouraging the implementation energy efficiency best practices and aligning policies to promote energy efficiency and conservation.

Olayande highlighted the disparities in energy infrastructure, with only one in five Africans having access to electricity and a limited percentage having access to clean water and irrigation facilities. These shortcomings impact sectors like agriculture, transportation and manufacturing, emphasising the need for comprehensive energy efficiency policies.

UNIDO representatives acknowledged the workshop’s significance in addressing factors that disrupt energy efficiency in Nigeria. The workshop is expected to develop a long-term training strategy for policymakers, empowering them to integrate energy efficiency best practices into the day-to-day operations of Nigerian manufacturing industries.

A representative from UNIDO, Oluyomi Banjo, recognised energy efficiency’s potential to optimise energy security and highlighted UNIDO’s commitment to collaborating with Nigeria to achieve efficiency benefits.

In his remarks, the director of linkages, research and consultancy at the ECN, Engr. Okon Ekpenyong presented samples of energy-efficiency policy initiatives. He emphasised that policies should be adapted to local contexts, as what works well in one setting may not be as effective in another.

He stressed the need to create an environment conducive to a national energy efficiency programme; policies should be enacted at the appropriate levels (federal, state, local) to remove barriers and encourage the development and implementation of energy efficiency practices.

Participants discussed cascading the overarching national energy efficiency policy framework during the workshop into concrete sector-specific or industry-specific policies. This process is intended to demonstrate the commitment and support of individual organisations, companies and entities towards energy management systems for continuous energy savings and cost reductions.

Ekpenyong concluded that “The effectiveness of best practice policies hinges on their application in local contexts. By thoughtfully considering development needs, local conditions, and priorities, Nigerian energy policymakers can tailor energy efficiency policies to their country’s unique circumstances”.

In essence, the ECN’s call for synergy in energy efficiency policy underscores the importance of collective efforts in driving sustainable energy practices and economic growth within Nigeria.

Also, a representative from the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), Clara Nmabaraye highlighted the energy efficiency sector’s potential for women’s empowerment, youth development and national growth. She stressed that energy management policy is key to harnessing these opportunities.

In conclusion, the workshop’s discussions and initiatives underscore the significance of collaborative efforts in establishing comprehensive energy efficiency policies to drive sustainable growth and development across Nigeria’s various sectors.
