The Gender and Election Watch Room of the Nigerian Women Trust Fund said that Saturday’s off-cycle governorship elections in Bayelsa, Kogi states, were relatively peaceful but marred with pockets of irregularities and malpractices.

The Chief Executive Officer of NWTF, Brenda Anugwom, disclosed this in its recent pre-election reports.

Anugwom said NWTF deployed 100 accredited observers to monitor the polls.

She noted that the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System, BVAS, worked optimally across polling units in the two states except in some cases where it malfunctioned.

According to her, voter turnout was relatively poor during the gubernatorial elections due to a lack of trust in the polls.

NWTF observed that the conduct of women at the polls was impressive as they turned out early but in low numbers.

Anugwom added that the cases of vote-buying, voters’ intimidation, and denial of access to polling units marred both Bayelsa and Kogi states elections.

“This was reported across all Local Government Areas observed; for instance, in Imiringi Town hall PU 016, Ogbia Local Government Area voters were seen entering the town hall upon casting their votes to receive a monetary sum, Bassambiri Mein Polo Tiri, and Ward 10 PU 002 Sagbama Local Government Area of Bayelsa State. In Ward 5 PU 002 Nembe Local Government Area, some culprits perpetrating vote buying were arrested”.

It stated the same observation in some areas in Kogi state: “For instance, in Imiringi Town hall PU 016, Ogbia Local Government Area voters were seen entering the town hall upon casting their votes to receive a monetary sum, Bassambiri Mein Polo Tiri, and Ward 10 PU 002 Sagbama Local Government Area of Bayelsa State. In Ward 5 PU 002 Nembe Local Government Area, some culprits perpetrating vote buying were arrested.

Meanwhile, the group recommended that “The level of preparedness and conduct of polls by INEC should be consistent to ensure that there is continuous and significant improvement with regards to logistics and opening of polls; That INEC should invoke the spirit of the new Electoral Law against vote buyers and sellers by arresting and prosecuting offenders to improve the electoral system; That INEC continues to improve on its planning around accessibility for pregnant women, nursing mothers, the elderly and Persons with Disabilities”.

Newshpere recalls that INEC declared Douye Diri of the Peoples Democratic Party and Ahmed Usman-Ododo of the All Progressives Party winners of the Bayelsa and Kogi state elections.

NLC, TUC give reason for suspending strike

0

Barely 48 hours after, the National Executive Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress on Wednesday night suspended the ongoing strike.

The unions said the suspension comes on the heels of the intervention of the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu.

The National Deputy Vice-President of the TUC, Tommy Etim disclosed this in an interview with our correspondent in Abuja after its meeting on Wednesday.

It was gathered that the meeting which commenced at a few minutes past 7 pm lasted for close to one hour during which various affiliates and state chapters reviewed the outcome of the meeting held between the leaders of the organised labour and Ribadu.

“The NEC of the NLC and the TUC have suspended the strike. We did this based on our trust for the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, who gave us his words,” he said.

Newssphere reports that the labour leaders met with Ribadu alongside the Minister of Labour, Simon Lalong, at the Office of the NSA on Wednesday afternoon.

Recall that on Tuesday, the union had shut down the country over assault on Joe Ajaero, NLC president in Imo state.

Earlier, Ribadu said the thug who attacked Ajaero in Imo state has been arrested being one of the primary reason for the strike action.

Court Stops NLC, TUC from embarking on Nov 14 strike

The National Industrial Court has restrained the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), and their affiliates from embarking on any form of strike or industrial action.

The two labour Unions were on Friday evening ordered to stop their planned nationwide strike action scheduled to commence on November 14.

President of the Court, Justice Benedict Bakwaph Kanyip, issued the restraining order following an ex-parte application to that effect brought before the Court by the Federal Government of Nigeria and the Attorney General of the Federation AGF and Minister of Justice.

Justice Kanyip invoked sections 17 and 19 of the National Industrial Court Act to issue the restraining order against Labour.

The Federal Government and the AGF, through their lawyer, Tijani Gazali, had, in the ex-parte application, prayed to the Court to stop the planned strike action to stop untold hardships that would be inflicted on innocent law-abiding citizens and their businesses.

Gazali, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and Director of Civil Appeals in the Federal Ministry of Justice, while arguing the ex-parte application drew the attention of Justice Kanyip to a series of hardships suffered by Nigerians on Thursday alone when the labour unions blocked entrances to the main Airports in the country.

He pleaded that unless the planned strike action is stopped, there may be a likelihood of a breach of peace in the country.

The Judge, who was persuaded by the government’s arguments, said that it is within the power of the Court to intervene by way of a restraining order to ensure peace and tranquillity.

He proceeded to grant all the requests of the federal government as contained in the motion paper.

Besides, Justice Kanyip directed that the restraining order be pasted on the wall of the building at the last known address of the two defendants to draw their attention to the Court’s position.

The Judge also directed that the order, originating, and other processes be served by publication in two major national dailies.

Meanwhile, the case file has been transferred to Justice Olufunke Anuwe, who is said to be handling similar labour dispute-related matters.

EEDC blames NLC for power outage in Imo

0

The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, EEDC, has explained that the prolonged power outage, which has affected the whole of Imo State, occasioned by the industrial action by organized labour, is beyond its control while empathizing with its customers.

Emeka Ezeh, Head of Corporate Communications, EEDC, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday.

Ezeh described the situation, which has lasted for nine days, as unfortunate and explained that with EEDC’s source of power which is at Egbu Transmission Station, shut down by the Labour Union, there was no way the company could get power to distribute to its customers in Imo State.

“We can only distribute the power that we receive from TCN Stations, and in this case, the station catering for our customers in Imo State has been shut down by the Labour Union.”

He acknowledged the untold hardship and inconveniences this development has caused the company, its staff residing in the state and esteemed customers in Imo State and expressed hope that the parties involved will resolve the issue so that normalcy can return to the state.

The EEDC spokesman stressed that the company is handicapped, losing revenue, running into millions of Naira, and cannot do much in this circumstance.

“As a Distribution Company, our primary source of supply is from the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) Stations, and once there is disruption in the chain, we won’t be able to deliver service to our customers,” Ezeh explained.

Ezeh allayed the fears of customers concerned that they might be billed for the period they were out of supply, emphasizing that the company does not bill for service not rendered.

“The impact of the power outage currently experienced will reflect on the December bill, which will be for energy consumed in November.

“Whereas the November bill, which is for energy consumed in October, has to be paid for by the customers, as it has no relation with the current power situation being experienced.”

Ezeh urged customers to remain vigilant and ensure that the transformer and other electricity infrastructure are protected, as vandals might want to take advantage of the outage to attack the equipment.

Last week, an organized labour union in Imo State shut down Egbu Transmission Station, which is EEDC’s electricity supply source, leaving it with no energy to distribute to its customers, a development that has put the whole of Imo State in darkness.

DAILY POST recalls that NLC asked members to withdraw their services in Imo state following an attack on its President, Joe Ajaero, last week.

Bayelsa, Imo, Kogi guber: Prophet Chukwudi reveals winners in Saturday’s elections

0
Prophet Chukwudi

Ahead of the gubernatorial elections scheduled for Saturday, November 11 2023, an Ebonyi State-based cleric, Prophet Emmanuel Chukwudi, has ‘prophesied’ winners of the polls in Bayelsa, Imo and Kogi states.

He also said that the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, is on his way out of detention.

Prophet Chukwudi, the General Overseer of Kings Deliverance Church, Gbonum, Ulepa Ntezi, Ebonyi State, disclosed these ‘prophecies’ on Tuesday while briefing journalists.

Chukwudi, who made a similar ‘prophecy’ in 2017 before Kanu’s release, told journalists that the IPOB leader had already been released in the spiritual realm and would be physically free very soon.

Chukwudi had also delved into many prophecies, with some coming true and others not coming to fulfilment.

This time, he also listed possible winners of the forthcoming Bayelsa, Kogi and Imo governorship elections held this weekend.

His words, “I have prophecies about what’s happening in Nigeria, especially in politics. In 2019, I gave a prophecy that Douye Diri would be the Governor of Bayelsa State. APC manipulated the elections, and they said David Lyon had won.

“But God affirmed his word when Diri was declared the winner at the Supreme Court. He is ruling Bayelsa today. Again today, I have a prophecy regarding Bayelsa. God is reassuring me that nothing can stop Douye Diri from ruling Bayelsa State for eight years. Diri is good to go. The second term, ambition, is a successful one.

“Previously, I also made a prophecy about Abubakar Audu that he would win. The whole world knew quite well that he had won the election but later died. And I said that Yahaya Bello would succeed him, and that later happened.

“Now, God is telling me that the APC candidate in Kogi State is the winner. So, on November 11, 2023, APC will retain power in Kogi.

“In 2019, I prophesied that Hope Uzodinma was the chosen one, but eventually, they declared Emeka Ihedioha as the winner and swore him in. Later, to show that the word of God can never fail, Hope was declared Governor at the Supreme Court to fulfil the word of God.

“Today, Uzodinma is ruling Imo State. I foresaw again that he would face terrible attacks in Imo State, and I prophesied it. Since he became Governor, what I said in 2020 has continued in Imo State till date. He has never had any rest as a Governor.

“Now, regarding this coming election, God is telling me that Hope remains the Hope for Imo people. He is the chosen one that God wants to govern, and so he will retain power. In the spirit realm, the Labour Party and the PDP are nowhere to be found.”

Concerning Nnamdi Kanu’s incarceration, Prophet Chukwudi said, “God is revealing to me that Kanu will soon be released. As I see Nnamdi Kanu in the spiritual realm, he is no longer in detention.

“In the nearest time from now, Nnamdi Kanu will come out and exercise his freedom. God has spoken, and Kanu will soon be a free man.”
